I worked at Jag when this car was engineered. I designed the original bonnet, hinges etc. At the time Jag was owned by Ford and urgently needed a new model to bring in revenue. We based it on the Dew98/Lincoln platform that was supposedly almost finished by the Ford team in the US but our small team of body design engineers turned this car around in record time and had it finished well before the Ford model. Needless to say Ford US management had searching questions to ask how their much bigger design team with much bigger salaries could not deliver their car on time as we had. Incidentally their car flopped and was withdrawn quite quickly. Check the body structural frame behind the wheel arch liners and you’ll find the Ford Oval logo stamped in key panels.
Some people watch funny animal videos to relax. I watch this guy. There is something about his driving, narration and leisurely pace that gives me enough to focus on but not enough to stay stressed. It helps that I'm interested in cars, particularly in ones that are unavailable or uncommon in the USA. So just saying (Matt?) that you might make a good therapist!

Love these S types. Great cars. I have an XK with the same 4.2 V8 and it makes me smile every time I start it up. Been very reliable too over the 3 years I've had it. We have to enjoy these V8's while we still can!
After owning a 3L V6 S-Type for a few years, I craved for this V8, finally bought it and loved it to bits. Drove it all over Europe and enjoyed the emotions of 155+ miles/hour in Germany. But, after 5 happy years, an idiot hit me from behind so hard that it was an instant write off. And it happened just after clocking 100k miles and passing the MOT with no advisories. Sad moment in life. Even if owning a faster car right now, which I also love, I still miss my gracious S-Type…
I had the same thing happen to me, too, after almost 9 happy years of owning a 2012 Ford Mustang, driver's side t-boned when the idiot who hit me me failed to stop or even slow down for a red light, instant total loss.
You cant believe the motoring magazines. They dont do long term high mileage reviews. I think jag have had some undeserved bad piublicity but bmw and audi for example are the true moneypits but you need to find out the later sorted years of each model and avoid certain ones like the plague. The xf seems really good and very under rated and are a great secondhand buy as they are far cheaper and some are with the better engines and transmissions.
The first time I ever remember being stunned by a car was seeing one of these for the first time. I was 7 years old when they launched, and I spent my pocket money on a big Diecast model of one. Fast forward to 2021, and a lady round the corner from me just bought an immaculate '03 V6 in the same colour as the model I used to have. It still turns my head every time I see it. I think I need one of my own.
You won't regret it. I used to read about them in car mags when i was in my teens and forgot about them for about 15 years until one in British racing green popped up on an auction site. It's on my driveway now and is the best car purchase i ever made.
I bought my S Type new in 2003 for 25K. Spent 3K on extended warranty, 3K on repairs and 500 on fixing rust on a wheel arch. Traded it in 14 years later with 90K miles covered for 500. 31K plus service costs and petrol for 14 years driving an upmarket car. Only traded it in as rust on wheel arch camd back and the auti gearbox played up when cold in winter ( loss of power for 1sec when pulling away, followed by thump similar to letting clutch fly up on manual) which Jag could not fix. Loved it. Got a XE 300ps new to replace it, new 48K and hope to get another 14 years out of it. By then we won't be allowed to buy petrol cars and I will be 75 so will get a mobility scooter and piss off Tesla drivers by driving up the main road at 3mph wearing a trilby and a grumpy old bar steward face. Heck if me and the wife travel side by side we can even hold up cyclists on country roads......REVENGE!!
Love my 2002 V8 SE. Didn't want a 'R' because I need the comfort. At 80mph cruising it gives 30mpg and averages 21. Any petrol head needs a V8 in their life at some point.
Matt owned loads of these old s_types , quick tip budd, with respect to the remote fob not operating the central locking, if after swapping the battery its still not functional, simply open the fob, on the motherboard you will see a raised brass like holder that presses against the battery, this sometimes flattens out over time and thus the connection formed by the finger press on the fob fails!! Simply raise this holder with a flat head screwdriver and save yourself a potential expensive visit to the auto electrician 👍👍 Regards Paul
I suspect they used Fords remote locking module, which were prone to losing their memory. I had a number of Mk2 Mondeo's and the remote locking stopped working at some point on all of them. You had to turn the ignition from p1 to p2 and back three times, or until the alarm light went solid red. Remove the key, press lock then unlock and hey presto, it would work again.
My first car back in 1966 was a '59' Mark II. I loved it but had to sell it when I went into the service. Fast forward fifty years on my 70th birthday, I brought a 2007 S-Type 3.0 with a BRG exterior and biscuit interior. Now five years later, I still love it. The car is bulletproof, the most reliable, most fun car I've ever owned. She still turns heads and gets lots of compliments.
I wasn’t a big fan of these when I was younger, but in the last 6 years or so my tastes have changed, and now that I’m at the grand old age of 19, I love cars like this, the W203 C-Class/W211 E-Class, and the older Lexuses. I’m often told that I’m old before my time, but I genuinely would rather have an ‘old mans’ luxury car like this with cream leather and wood trim than an AMG-Line A Class. Glad to see I’m not the only one.
In October 2020, I dragged my son up to Santa Cruz to look at a 2003 S-Type Base (V6) it was $2,000. Well, my son was originally thinking about a small truck, but he really liked the look and sound of the Jag. We've put in another $2k for repairs (brakes, tires and ZF servicing) he really likes it and gets "thumbs up" from Jag F Type owners. He's 17, and last weekend a lady in San Luis Obispo, CA claimed he was stealing the car....lol
“Well done mate”. I live in Nigeria (& I’m from Nigeria) & I absolutely love all Ur car videos). Beautiful presentation, nice humor as it really reflects “you” and lovely cars U pick and present. I need not say 2 much. I just want you to know that if I ever come 2 d Uk, I hope 2 meet U in person and express my gratitude for your effort on making car videos on UA-cam educational / informative , relaxed & fun 2 watch. By d way I LOVE d JAGUAR S-TYPE V8. In Nigeria, you wud b considered as bng “VERY” old fashioned 4 buying dis car, buh only d brave car enthusiasts will really know wot U wud’ve done. So thanks once again and as you often say yourself “I’ll c U around”. 😁
I paid £150 for a 2001 s type with the 2.5 v6 with 1 months MOT left. I enjoyed it for the time I had it. Very comfortable cruiser and I like the way it looks. It had a leaking sump and corrosion underneath. So I traded it in for a Saab 93 after a month and got £150 for it. So nothing gained but nothing lost.
That could be one of the S Types I worked on in Trim and Final Assy, before I moved to BIW CMM. I used to fit the CD auto changer assy in the boot! I would love to own an S Type as that was the car that got me my job at Jag!
I have a 2002 S-Type (post interior facelift) its a fully loaded 3.0 V6 5speed manual with the touchscreen and everyting. My mom had it for 8 years until a year ago she bought a 2012 C Class to replace it. Its now in the garage waiting for me to get a license (im almost 17 so 1 more year) and apart from the dodgy headliner above the rear passenger seat its all sound, garaged its whole life and never driven in the winter. Cant wait to legally drive the thing :)
I have one of these Jags. There is only 1 problem with it: I do not know what to replace it with. I've considered the X350, but they're pricey and there can be lots more wrong with them. Also, mine has 125k km (that's 78k miles) on the clock, and is in great condition... maybe a XK... but I think in 10 years I'll still have it. Simply can't beat it for the price.
Yeah, those engines are pretty bullet proof. The 3.0 V6 is pretty well proven from what I've seen, as it's been used on many cars as well as the base S-Type. The 4.0/4.2 V8 was actually designed by Jaguar, but Ford owned the plant where it was designed at. I'm super impressed by the reliability from a high percentage of them. I have a 2004 XJ8. Love the car. But now I'm seriously considering selling it and getting an XJR of the same year. In the States, where I live, I'm thinking the Supercharged version, the R, may be more sought after on a collector market.
Many, many years ago, in northern England saw a gentleman changing his street shoes to some other, cleaner, when entering his S-Type. I was impressed by his atitude. 'Till the day, I never noticed somebody else doing the same, even the car was way more expensive.
2002 was a change over year for the S-Type. You have (like many STRs) a Mk1 body with a Mk2 interior. You got the 4.2 anyway as the 4ltrs came with a 5 speed box.. I had a green Mk1 V6 '02 just like that with the dodgy front suspension too. I chopped that in for a Black ex-Jag managers V8 Sport (with all boxes ticked) that I loved like a new, new wife and actually shed tears when I sold it. I still miss it now.
I get the same grin on my face when I go out in my 1966 Mark 2 2.4 automatic. Done 98,000 miles since new. I have the original log book, service record, original Jaguar tool kit complete. Made many improvements during rebuild. All use in Australia it is rust free-lady first owner, metallic silver grey, red leather. Greetings from Tasmania Australia-ex Leeds Pom.
I owned a 2004 model, same engine, in 2007….it had 27k miles…. it was amazing….and I crashed it… killed it. Since then I always had a soft spot for Jaguars…. XFR XJR S TYPE R….XKR… You sir have a great channel and the way you’re advertising your sponsors during the videos are smooth, not annoying at all( to me at least). I appreciate that you’re not loud, screaming, being a clown ( see other channels… most all the other channels… won’t even mention them) Cheers!
I love this video! The best car I’ve ever owned is my present Spanish-registered, totally rust free 2005 Executive 2.7D with Hi-Lux interior, sunroof etc. I’ve owned it for almost 11 years and won’t ever part with it! These cars are grossly undervalued and really a steal if you can find a well kept one. Thanks for finally presenting one of my favourite cars 😎!
Bought one myself 2 yrs ago £2000 40,000 miles, it was an itch i had to scratch, ended up keeping it, love the V8. changed all the fluids including gbox and sump pan, been fine, except the infamous bootleak from the o/s rear light, sealed that, and thats it no bother since.
My daughter has an 's' type 3 litre V6 . We are in Perth Western Australia where big old V6 or V8 engine are the normal and hold value better than hatchbacks. She paid $5000 which I understand is quite a bargain as they regularly go for twice that. I drive it and although it is not as powerful as a Holden or Falcon it still is very nice and handles very well
GGGREAT! car I have had mine for 8 yrs. bought from the original owner a famous opera singer from weybridge in surrey have been to spain & france several times never missed a beat & hardly spent on parts just services tyres etc & still drives like new 117000 mls. I paid £800 a bargain? I think so
Based on a Lincoln LS. I went to the NEC motor show when the S-Type was launched. There was a huge Jaguar 'leaper' that disappeared into the show stand & then a shiny new S-Type came on in it's place. Very impressive. These cars are very cheap but parts are still very Jag, £900 for a rear sub frame 🥺
Just returned from holiday in spain once more 26 nov, absolutely fab drive have just give the old girl oil service including autobox & pan filter cant wait for next
It looks immaculate for its age. You are dead right about the obsession with mpg - a condition I suffer from - but it's illogical unless you do a huge mileage. People will happily lash out £299 per month on a PCP but get all twitchy if a car doesn't do 40 mpg. Hope you keep the car original - it's a beauty.
Exactly! My son in law to be traded in his car to take out a £350 per month - his reason “to save on fuel”. What a load of b/s! As you say, “illogical”
I bought a year old 4.0 litre in 2000. I went through multiple suspension wishbones and ball-joints and strangest of all, 3 expansion tanks. The coolant seemed to decompose them after a few years. Sold it to a guy in Germany on ebay in 2009 with an illuminated battery warning light which neither the specialists or the main dealer ever managed to fix. I read there was Tech Bulletin later regarding a chafing wire loom which may have been the problem. Was far too young to own it, I admit my own reflection in shop windows in it, just looked wrong, but overall, I loved every minute of it. A real wafter!
If it's like the Land Rover remote locking system, when you can't or don't want to use the remote and have to use the key... Turning the key counter-clockwise in the driver's door and holding it fully turned for 5 or 6 seconds disables the alarm system so that it won't go off and wake up the neighborhood next time you unlock the car. Give it a try, if you don't find an easy fix like a fresh battery fixes it (also note a previous response below about fixing the key fob). This procedure to disable the alarm also can be handy if parking the car for an extended period of time and not wanting to return to a battery run flat by the alarm system. If you end up getting a replacement fob, hopefully it will have a simple "learning" process, like I used on a spare I purchased for my LR. It was some years ago, but I seem to recall was nothing more than pressing the button on the fob four or five times while sitting in the car with it unlocked.
My experience of S Type A/c is usually condenser failure. It rots out as it is ahead of the radiator. Rather like its half brother the Mondeo. Great review thank you
bro I've watched alot of car reviews from other channels and ur the best second to none ur views are so comprehensive and honest please upload new material. ..hailing from trinidad in the carribbean
Hi Matt another car we have both owned I had a blue 2001, 3 litre V6 petrol with the same wheels which for was a bit of a pain because it was missing the little adapter which you had to screw into the wheel and then attach the airline after 4 weeks of looking i managed to track one down mine had the voice control in it which at the time was quite rare and I loved using it and when I was showing my friends I would press the voice button and say “help” and the car would tell my friends what she could do great toy to have, try and find an original mesh grill for her would really help clean here up great video best wishes ian
I have A 2003 V8 S type 83k. all I had wrong with it was the failed shifter that locked it in park. and a radiator and leaking plastic overflow tank replaced.
Would love to see the Jag brought up to near mint condition (without spending a fortune). How about a "Wheeler Dealer" type video in the workshop showing how to do it?
While everyone I know bought Fiesta or Jazz for their first car with a learner driving license, I bought a facelift 2004 2.7D S type with 53K miles on it. I learned how to drive in this car and am in fact still driving it. Unfortunately, I have to sell it due to ULEZ and am in the process of buying an 2010 XF Petrol. If it wasn’t for ULEZ, I would drive that car until it dies. Such a nice car. 😎
I bought an SR (V8 Supercharged) way back in 2003 - I still have it, though I don't drive it much now that I work at home. It's only done 150,000 miles. I live in California so there's no rust and the condition is excellent both inside and out. The wife thinks I should get rid of it and get something electric instead. But trade-in value is only about $2500-$3000 US. I still love it so much - so it might come down to who I love more - the wife or the Jag!
My Boss the 1st series S type v8 in 2000, I thought it was great, but then 4 years later he bought the S type-R and that was amazing. Really threw you back into your seat when he stomped on the accelerator!
We had a 2000 S-Type 4.0L V8 for 7 years. Mods: that grill is like the S-Type R model. Maybe get an OEM grill but the original slated grill is rather dull. You can also get a lower grill for the "mouth". We removed the round badge on the bonnet and replaced it with a Leaper, looked great. Replaced the cheap looking exhaust tips with a subtle but quality design. We removed the side protector strips that aren't present on your model. Apart from that a decent quality of window tint without being too dark. It didn't need much else. Great car, but had a lack of torque. Smooth though. 5 speed Ford transmission was good but ultimately wore out after 13 years of use due the alloy valve body recesses. Found out after trading it that they are used in Lincolns which suffer the same problem. Brass inserts solve the problem. I always wanted the 4.2L with the ZF 6 speed which you have. The traction control system on the 4.0L was a death trap. Once trigger it killed all power for a 3-5 seconds. We had a couple of close calls. Would have been nice to sort that out.
Hi Matt, I think you’re a great UA-camr, with a personable and authoritative style. Most of all, you’re not one of these high voiced, phrenetic reviewers from our old colony who exudes fake emotions. You’re easy to listen to and, it looks like you’re a very, very rare breed: an honest car dealer! If I was in the market for a second hand car, which I may be in a few years when my son reaches 17, I will definitely look you up. I just saw this review and was curious as a neighbour of mine, approx. 20 years ago, had a BRG one of these as a company car. He was a 29 year old who was the National Sales Director for the now defunct (or absorbed) T-Mobile and used to rave about his car. We went to watch Newcastle beat Leeds in the PL. I nearly didn’t get a lift back, since I taunted him so much about Leeds losing. Great day, great car, great result….
Think you may have a bargain. If not too far gone underneath get it blasted and undersealed. V8 will become sought after, V8 R supercharged even more so. Check out the coolant hoses as the one thing that will wreck these otherwise unbreakable units is an overheat. Also good you have the 4.2 and not the older 4.0 which can have liner issues. Looking forwards to the next episode - older jags are getting scarce and good ones are holding values well - be interesting to see how this one pans out. Personally I’d be finding reasons to keep it for a while !
i own one with low miles and rust free , great car to cruise around in and more than enough power for the motorway trips , still gets looks from passers by ,
I had the 3.0 new in 2003, looked at v8 and stealer/indies said "stay away from v8" as they suffered engine issues? Sold the S type as it was too cramped for family use... also got fed up with peeps telling me it was just a Mondeo.... The split rims are fake, plastic allen nuts break off. I loved my S, had a few X type afterwards but no comparison for ride and the large Jag feel.
Dad had the S Type R. 400bhp super charged V8 and luxurious. The V8 was drowned out by the supercharger whine somewhat but for overtaking I haven't been in anything quicker, even an AMG 5 litre slk
I think remove any signs that it has a V8 like any badges, and get a cheap exhaust for it, wether it's straight pipe which might be droney or just a de muffler. If u wanna go all in, I'd suggest getting a vavled exhaust that can open or close from the push of a button or work with the RPM so when your flooring it, lets say 3.5k rpm and above, the valve opens. I think it'd be nice and subtle
I love Jaguar as a company and I am currently on my 2nd S-Type. For me, sitting behind the wheel is just so special. I love the looks and the smooth ride but most of all, I love the way it makes me feel British ( I am British by the way ) and the fact that they are not so common on the road anymore. Mine is the 3.0 sport 2003 in Seafrost Pearl with Tan interior. It is mint in every way and I feel proud to drive it around my neighborhood. I am going to purchase the XKR 4.2 Supercharged next year as I also love that car as well.
I love it when you do the Jags. Well, I'm biased, but still they're awesome cars. The XFR in particular is my fave and I have one. Best car I ever had 😉
I like Matt. It's his fault I bought an XK-R after he drove the white one a while back. I have the feeling he wouldn't rip off his customers. To say that's rare is an understatement! I bought my XK-R from a large Yorkshire dealership and three days later the owner's wife "invited" me to provide a 5 star review! I'd hardly had time to sit in it yet. I went on live chat a while back and she panicked when I asked why genuine reviews are not allowed. She has yet to justify the practice. The car's OK but I won't be back.
Aircon probably due to a leaky expansion tank, fluid drops on to the heater valve, shorts out the valve and that fries the CCU climate control unit which is above the glovebox. All parts available but not cheap, sort the expansion tank before doing anything. Get the bigger exhaust tips (genuine jag ones on eBay) slip straight over what's there and look so much better. swap the Tape deck for the single slot cd (£35) easier than loading the changer, if you haven't got the phone option fitted get one from a later XJ, straight forward plug and play and is simpler than the two box solution designed for the s-type. Get a less bling grille and get rid of the mirror caps too. My one is a 4.2 V8 SE in Black 2003 sub 100K and its a peach.
I love Jags my dad had a XJS in the 80s used to go to Jag shows on Sundays which was a pain in the arse when your 14 much better things too do ....I remember being in the XJS with my mum driving we stopped at a set of lights and a young guy came next too us in a XR3I which in 1985 was the dogs bollocks he thought he would have the XJS for breakfast.... the lights changed my mum put her foot down in the 5.2 Jag I swear the XR3I is still sat at the lights to this day wondering WTF
Good for your Mom. It's a great feeling of satisfaction when you o that in a sedate looking car and stick it to those young hoods in their so called hot cars.
What a cracking car, and a great deal. That really is a day to day supercar, 300bhp is enough for anyone in the UK. Great review. Thank you. I dare you to test a Nissan Leaf next...
Yes! God damn the V8 sounds great but having had my V6 for a year now I'm very glad I've got all the extra room in the engine bay. Hands-down these S-Types gotta be among the best project cars in the UK, especially with the Jag parts network.
Lucky me...in the USA ..North Carolina..and found a 2000 S-Type 3.0..wasn't even searching! It has 110,000mi..in great shape and $3000 us dollars. I am now worried. Should anything go wrong mechanically, I can't fix it..too expensive thanks to COVID..no money for much. The outside mirrors..don't work..must do manually, Windshield fluid...not working..filled, checked, cleaned little nozzle on hood..nothing! Electrical, wiring, motor...or fuse? Trying fuse tomorrow. Clunky sound in front..after stopping when I start to go...what is it? Bearings, ball joints, control arm, springs, needs oil...now I'm petrified..what have I done? No garage, and these babies need a garage..but no snow or super cold weather here. Down South .mostly rain..humidity(98%) and temps regularly 95...even thru fall. Should I return it to seller n beg for my money? Sell it myself immediately? Keep it, pray, and make alter sacrifices to the engine and car Gods? I think I'm in deep s---, no service records, but Vin is all ok..no issues, 3 owners..3 states. This Jags has been around...if only he could speak.
I've had a 3.0 V6 2005 model for the last five years and on the whole been a very solid car to be fair to it. Still has that ability to make you feel special just doing a mundane journey to a shop.
I just picked a mint one off these up on 2004 for 800 quid I've done the box put front bearings on and it's good car for little money I'm going to stick it up for 3695
Buy new mag wheels as opposed to the refurbish the current ones. It may not be as good at re-purposing what you have but at times can make a car look infinitely better than the supplied manufacturer wheels.
Mine was 570 quid , bought Syt Maidestone. Broke down by Dartxxxx Dartmouth tunnel is it. DartM bridge. Movex logistics brought it up . AA later and came to Stockport for 88 quid delivery. Mega car. Lumpy tho . A cat. One of 3/4 catalytic converters . Beaut bodywork. Is only a 2.5 or 3.0. Bet still have it in a year. It’s beautiful. Cannot believe I’m saying it. Born 77 now 44 I can appreciate a Jag. And had one 4.2 R and made 2k was over 10 years ago unlike !!! When the car job actually worked.
My father had the 3.0 and I loved driving it. I remember going along lane 3 on the M6 near Shap and the lane just disappeared under deep snow. I just held firm and slowly edged over to lane 2, it was that day I learned about good wide tyres...
I owned until recently a V6 2.7 SE 07 plate bought for £5k with 48k and 1 owner Jag service history ran it for 4 years added 60K and it was a dream . No rust issues beware front wings bubbling pattern front wings are circa £300 apart from correct servicing and usual consumables never let me down , I did see 47 Mpg and regular motorway driving upper 30s mpg . There were some extras that were missing which I expected as standard , folding door mirrors and front parking sensors (its a long car and rolls away on the corners ) . DPF clogs regularly after a week of town driving a motorway blast sorted this out. The V6 D is a cracking engine turbo lag is irritating but not as bad as the XC 90 I replaced it with , Sold due to a bad back and getting in and out became an issue . All in all a cracking car and a future classic try and keep the V8s away form banger racers .
Great review Matt, totally agree with you, I ran a 3.0 petrol one a number of years ago, it never let me down, and apart from an annual service, I never had to spend a penny on it, the only problem I had was the sat nav used to send me on mad detour’s every now and again!
I've always said these and the X type were great cheap daily runarounds. You can get them for next to nothing with under 100 thousand miles on them. One thing though, it's a good idea to underseal them every couple of years if you're planning to hang on to it for a while because they're quite prone to rust in the sills and wheel arches.
Glad my Airvidox recommendation in the LS video worked Matt! Nothing major to worry about on the MOT front by the looks of it, please get rid of the silly mesh grille asap! Cheers, Chris
Hello mate. I have the 2001 v6 auto and i love it. Spent a fair ole bit spent on it. Lots of new chrome extras. New radiator drop links rear struts 4 new tyres but she is mint
Still have the 2003 s-type jag. Kept going into limp mode. So sad. Just a beautiful car. Still beautiful. It took a serious crap. My husband is excellent with cars and this drove him crazy. The book value is way low now. He tried everything he knew. It was dangerous to drive on the highway. Went into limp mode for whatever reason. Afraid to drive it any distance. So, it sits at his work place. All these years have passed and still battling over what to do? I talked to soooo many people about this issue. Could be a hundred different things. I do not know. My grandmother used to say, ‘what is a good looking dish with nothing in it?’
I have a 2006, 3.0 V6. Add a private plate and a machine polish and you turn heads. Just did 250 miles today, didn’t miss a beat as we cruised in air-conditioned luxury. As for economy, 30mpg on a run, and you can buy a lot of petrol with the money you save by not buying a soulless EV.
No need for Avidox, you get the same result by putting a bowl of vinegar in the vehicle overnight/8hrs, totally neutralises the tobacco or any other malodours. Did it in an old V70tdi.
I have the V6 Sport that has the same issue with the alarm/door. Its the drivers door module, you have 10 seconds to put the key in the ignition or the alarm goes off. On rare occasions it can also lock you inside the car if you mess about with the windows too much before the central locking kicks in after going 5MPH. Replacing the drivers door module and getting it re-programmed to your key should be pretty easy, the modules 2nd hand are as cheap as £20 on eBay. The only hard part is programming them to the key.
Had the V6 as my company car in this colour. Did 120,000 miles in and it was a real head turner. People used to stand at the side of it to have their pictures taken. Very sad to see it go, I needed to get a diesel next as Gordon Brown had upped the company car tax. I swapped it for a Mazda 6
Was certainly a bargain bucket gem... I toyed with the idea of buying an S Class a few years ago but my wife stopped me saying " they are an old mans car " i still like em though and i am no spring chicken now either.😁
very nice Jag! The best and rare engine, would only change that pre-facelift grille to original one (for X202 with growler), hold tumbs with repairs, one of the best looking saloons reminding 60s Mk2s, S-Types
I've just bought a 2.7d MANUAL the exact same spec as the one clarkson drove around the nurburgring 20 years ago when this car came out, myself and a couple of friends said £700 (which turned out to be a bargain as it's a really nice car) and we're going to drive it to Germany and try to beat clarksons time, just for a laugh and if we crash it or it breaks down we can simply leave it there and fly home. Altho tbh I hope it makes it back as I'm really enjoying driving it and my family absolutely love it.
I love the S type, I always have, even before I had an X type, then an XJ, then an XF, I think they look great especially the facelift models, especially when they have the xenon‘s and especially the Type R’s. They get so much hate but they are very comfortable, they are reliable and the parts are cheap. That one right there you got a steal, that thing is so clean, looks like it has every option except a sunroof and adaptive cruise control, but I know that a lot of cars don’t come with sunroofs in the UK, when I’m pretty sure it was standard in the United States💯👌🙏
Brilliant video. I love the s type I've had 2 there a lot of car for next to no money. Both of mine was reliable and surprisingly wasn't bad on fuel at all. I found parts was reasonably as well I would have another in a heartbeat
The wood steering wheel and the ‘Randle handle’ automatic shift are a feature of that er, I rather miss these with the VJ351. Didn’t you once say that these cars were Jag badged Mondeos?
@@yopuivideo And puzzling. The prices people are asking, and getting, for used cars in Oz is almost laughable. The Lil' Aussie Bleeders are going to moan like bitches when the C19 induced market bubble bursts and their overpriced purchase halves back to it's real value. I've sold three of my cars for double the purchase price after only 18 months, not because I wanted too but opportunities to take wads of cash from willing fools doesnt come around very often.
Everytime I see a tidy S-Type (or XJ, XK or even X-Type) I always fancy one. They are very cheap, but almost have as much of a regal British look as a Bentley. Pretty solid running gear and the paint and leather usually looks in great condition. There's afew Ford parts and switches but that happens even in Astons and Lambos with VW. Instead I took the safe option and got an E90 320d but that's like a dentists waiting room, where as Jags of old are like hunting clubs on wheels. The first XF incidently uses much of the S-Type platform but in a more sterile package. The retro oldy worldy British Empire looks might not have been in vogue in the early 2000s but now I think most of us like the fact that it offers something different, cosy and interesting.
The S Type was the first Jag I drove. As a young apprentice I used to drive my boss around in a brand new manual 3.0 V6 in 1999. It was great to drive and really comfortable but I never liked the styling. Despite the styling I always an S Type R and before I got one, Jaguar launched the XFR so I got one of those instead. The S Type would have been a much bigger success if it had more contemporary styling to appeal to a younger and bigger market
I've always loved the S-Type, especially the 4.0L and the updated 4.2L V8 versions. Just of note, the front driver side wing panel looks slightly darker than the door...possibly a respray or new panel, or maybe just the change of light in the video.
Definately get the gearbox serviced or it will die. Fit a new top quality battery to keep the warning lights off the dashboard. Make sure the alternator is doing it's job properly too, as this can throw up Gearbox Error's and put you in limp mode.
A colleague had a small engined one. He mentioned how he was "always getting pulled over by the police. They just begrudge someone owning a Jag'". "You should explain to them that it's just a rebadged Mondeo", said the boss. The car was never mentioned again .... This machine looks like new ! I always thought they looked great, and that interior still looks cool.
Some recalcitrants might mock it today.. But nobody can deny the fact it was a dream car for many way back then.. The interiors are a place to be.. A countryside ride in a perfectly maintained example is the stuff our dreams r made of.
Thank you! That’s good feedback. All the best 😉

Love these S types. Great cars. I have an XK with the same 4.2 V8 and it makes me smile every time I start it up. Been very reliable too over the 3 years I've had it. We have to enjoy these V8's while we still can!
Totally agree 👍🏼 few weeks ago I bought a one owner from new 2009 XF with the same 4.2 V8 and I love it 💪🏼😎👍🏼
After owning a 3L V6 S-Type for a few years, I craved for this V8, finally bought it and loved it to bits.
Is 3.0 v6 petrol general reliable?
@@forresg500 Yes, it’s very good. I had no problems at all.
Me too back in 2012 when i was 11 yr old boy , and i was stunned by 01 S type 4.0 V8 Sound , look 😍😍😍
Go for it you will not be sorry I smile & say hello babe every time I open my garage door!!
@@jameshiggins8329 It's a shame that these crazy climate fascists try to forbid us everything.
Simply raise this holder with a flat head screwdriver and save yourself a potential expensive visit to the auto electrician 👍👍
Regards Paul
The Fobs are a mare,, they never work well
Thanks for the tip.
I second that. I love my metallic burgundy 3.0S
3rd that ,terrific cars.
You just have good taste, recognise good value and want to be an individual. Drive what YOU want.

Dude I just bought an 03' 3.0. I love that thing already. Such a smooth ride. The interior is spotless. and definitely an at home feeling. Love it.
I bought an exact similar one 3 months ago! Absolutely love it. Best value for money I’ve ever come across in the 30 cars I’ve owned.
Nice Jaaaag, and a bargain. Always go for the V8 version of anything if you can.
I owned a 2004 model, same engine, in 2007….it had 27k miles…. it was amazing….and I crashed it… killed it. Since then I always had a soft spot for Jaguars…. XFR XJR S TYPE R….XKR…
You sir have a great channel and the way you’re advertising your sponsors during the videos are smooth, not annoying at all( to me at least). I appreciate that you’re not loud, screaming, being a clown ( see other channels… most all the other channels… won’t even mention them)

I drive it and although it is not as powerful as a Holden or Falcon it still is very nice and handles very well
The X Type is another much maligned Jag which is an excellent car and in diesel form properly maintained can do intergalactic mileages
rust kills most of them
GGGREAT! car I have had mine for 8 yrs. bought from the original owner a famous opera singer from weybridge in surrey have been to spain & france several times never missed a beat & hardly spent on parts just services tyres etc & still drives like new 117000 mls.
Always liked the R version of this.
Can’t believe you only paid £750! Billy bargain for all that Jaaaaaag!
A handsome looking jag well. Classic looks. Perhaps Ford did something good for the S type, reliability perhaps?
What a load of
Great review thank you
I used to own a S type, absolutely 💯 gorgeous

That be awesome I have a 2001 and working on it.
Look up Swallows Jaguar on facebook. They've modernised and restyled an S Type R. Their work is quite well documented
Man I love this channel...watch video... finish video... open Autotrader and start window shopping. 🤣
hahahhaha same
My Boss the 1st series S type v8 in 2000, I thought it was great, but then 4 years later he bought the S type-R and that was amazing.
I would actually travel from Middlesbrough to buy a motor from him... yes he's great at doing videos isn't he
Think you may have a bargain.
Waited 7:09 for the Clarkson-ism! I had a rental V6 version many moons ago for a few months, sounded fantastic. Very jealous that you’ve got the V8.👍
i own one with low miles and rust free , great car to cruise around in and more than enough power for the motorway trips , still gets looks from passers by ,
That Jag looks brill, you've made me start wondering about good old V8's now mind...
Agree, brilliant.
I think they are really nice cars - if you can get one that's not rusty. Definitely bargain buys if you get a good one.
most of them RUSty... what's really terrible thing...
Big if though isn't it

@@sicilyny5375 check if it's not rusty...
I've had a 3.0 V6 2005 model for the last five years and on the whole been a very solid car to be fair to it. Still has that ability to make you feel special just doing a mundane journey to a shop.
Just bought one of your reassuringly expensive t-shirts. Worth it for all the videos I've enjoyed.
Congratulations! Incredibly good price. It was Ford ownership back then. Technically it's a Lincoln LS.
My father had the 3.0 and I loved driving it. I remember going along lane 3 on the M6 near Shap and the lane just disappeared under deep snow. I just held firm and slowly edged over to lane 2, it was that day I learned about good wide tyres...
I had the 2.5 petrol,, 2002,, loved it ,, glided along,, could do a lot of work on it myself .. big imposing car on the road
Even today Google maps on the latest smartphone takes you on mad detours. But you get there in the end.
Cheers,
Chris
"Woodier than termite's droppings". I'm going to save that quote in a box and set it free when my Rover P5B coupe is ready from restoration.
If you have to open the door with the key, turn the ignition on within 5 seconds to stop the alarm sounding.
Dad had one in the middle east. Every 5 star hotel parked it out the front....stunning
I like them.. What I don't like is the blonde wood. I prefer dark brown or deep reddish brown woodwork. Replace the woodwork with the darker colour
I am a Surf Shark subscriber and a multiple Jag owner/enthusiast.
I think he was referring to the X type...
S-Type in this condition starts at £10,000 GBP here in Oz.
20k for S-type R.. Very annoying!
Hi Matt, what was that air freshener you mentioned? I couldn't quite make it out on the video. Great video thanks for sharing 👍
