      Beautiful car! Love Jag V8's... Id love one myself or maybe the XJ8 But they are all too rotten for it to be worth buying one. Once the auto box is service it should feel smoother and probably a tad quicker as the gear changes will be effortless and quicker

    Nice to see it still about. As for the gearbox, i would strongly recommend you service it, its only a couple hundred quid at most, and makes a night and day difference, and also massively prolongs the life of the gearbox.

      Correct… don’t flush it, just drain the fluid that wants to come out, new filter and new oil…. Sound investment….

    The delay and clunk on the box means it most likely needs a service, you can get a service kit for like £90 and do it yourself or about £360 at a jaguar specialist assuming it has the ZF box like mine.

    • @ford890a
      @ford890a 5 місяців тому

      Had a 3.0 with the same box, from what I remember the 5 speed was a GM or Ford. The six speed used from 2003/2004 was probably ZF. It was still easy job if you can get the car in the air and level.

    The Porsche Cayenne V8 urbo has even more much power, but with every kickdown you blew a 5 £ note through the exhaust. A lot of horses also eat a lot of hay.

    Joel, recommended trans service is approx. every 60-90 thousand miles. However, the hesitation in to drive may be a common issue with the shifter and not the trans and will eventually start shifting into neutral while driving. Try shifting in the "J gate" from drive to left and back and if it immediately goes into drive, it's the shifter and a fairly inexpensive repair of just swapping out for a good used one.

    I have the same 4L V8 engine in my X308 LWB. They rev out better than the X308 XJR (previously had one) and dont sound like a washing machine on "fast-spin"! On my second gearbox (ZF 5 speed) which I suspect is same as that in your S-type. Agree with others here that have fluid change. If still reluctant to change and clunky then likely you will need a reconditioned box or take your chance with secondhand autobox.

    I had two 4.0 S Types from new, in fact I was one of the earliest customers taking delivery in April 1999. Unfortunately it was plagued with issues and in November 2000 it was changed by Jaguar for another 4.0 litre. The second one was built after some 'body in white' updates which resolved some of the earlier build problems.
    Compared to my previous 1995 XJ6, the influence of Ford was clear to see ( the S-Type shared much development with a US Lincoln), but by then the same was the case with the re ised XJ8, where the switchgear and some trim parts were of cheaper quality and clearly Ford derived, both visibly and in the case of the S-Type underneath- Ford Motorpart oil filter as just one example.
    However the one thing about the S-Type was the way it drove, it still had all the refinement, if a bit bumpier than an XJ, that always made a Jaguar special.
    In all I had, all from new somexsix Jaguar's over a twenty year period, including an X350 XJ6, and then two XF,s - both S model Diesel Portfolios.
    I would have stayed with the brand, but in 2015 with the launch of the XE and new XF, Jaguar had decided to chase the likes of Audi and with it came distinctly low rent cabins, so I switched to Maserati and ordered a Ghibli Diesel, and being that I always like my luxuries and gadgets ordered a fully specced car, with the full upgraded leather upholstery. This gave the car the same true luxury feel of my first Jaguar, and in many ways was more of a spiritual successor to my first XJ.
    finally, and ifvyou have read this far😮 (sorry for what has become a boring tale of my car ownership!), I switched in June '22 to an EV, and what in many ways still does the true British luxury car 'thing', in the shape of the Genesis Electrified G80. This car was styled by the ex Bentley head of design, and is often confused for a Bentley, however whereas a new Bentley is getting on for £200k the Genesis is more than half the price!

    I've been driving my XF recently and been neglecting the S Type. But I was in Monaco recently, and when I was there (in a rented Tesla!), I saw several S Types and no XFs. The XF is obviously too modern and sterile for the good people of Monaco, and they prefer the character and posh interior of the S Type.
