The 05 pistons defense was so successful becisse they were the first team to defensively take advantage of the removal of the illegal defense rules.
Which by today's standards is just normal defensive rotation and positioning.
The 04 pistons do not have the required firepower to keep up today. Do not list Billups and Hamilton as guys that would be elite servers today from three. That's pure speculation. These old teams people like to hype up.

I'm trying to figure out how Detroit's offense would be archaic today? Their offense would actually be better with all the spacing and lack of physicality. Besides Ben Wallace, they could all score the ball. With that said, I got the Spurs, and here's why. Who was the one team in the west that played the brand of basketball we see most teams play today? The Phoenix Sun. Uptempo, spread the floor, team full of scorers, and versatile players. Who was the one team they could not beat in the playoffs at their peak? San Antonio.

The issue I always have when people talk about the 2000’s Pistons offensively ( I realize this is about the 04 Pistons specifically) is they don’t realize the Pistons became a top offensive team for many years during their run but their defense suffered for it along with losing key pieces like Ben/Larry Brown they also switched to zone under Flip Saunders.
The point is they absolutely could of offensively adjusted to this era with no issue. 1-4 could all shoot and post up as well as Rip coming off screens. They were versatile as hell offensively.

In this era with that Pistons Defense still add in that Sheed, RIP, and Billups would have to score more and have more shooting attempts which they styles do better in this era. Picture Sheed in the Blend Post & Shooting 3s which he was already doing, Rip midrange game is still like DeRozan, and Chauncey Billups will store get to the rim plus bust 3s and Floor General. All they will need is Big Ben Super Defense on these new era soft centers to lock them down and Tayshaun lockdown these Forwards with his long armed wingspan. Both Pistons and Spurs will flourish perfectly because they both played full team ball! And don't forget before injuries Antonio McDyess use to cook people when he was a Denver Nugget and he was still a solid off the bench on the Pistons. 05 Pacers and 09 Magic would flourish also and especially the 2005 to 2009 Phoenix Suns but definitely 2005 squad. 06-07 and 07-08 We Believe Warriors would be a force in this era with the fight that had.

The 05 Pistons almost beat the 05 Spurs if not for the Horry shot and that was after they lost most of their depth from 04. 04 Pistons beat the 07 Spurs

People who really think the Pistons couldn’t adjust to the modern NBA especially offensively is hilarious. They became one of the best well rounded offensive teams of their era after 04 including being a great jump shooting team with a whole starting lineup besides Ben who could post up.

Spurs in 5. When your 2nd best shooter is Rasheed Wallace, you're not gonna be winning a ton of games. Plus in the 04 season, hand checking was still allowed so Detroit was allowed to be a bit rougher defensively, but San Antonio won 3 chips in the no hand check era, they proved that they could win in this era. San Antonio combined an elite offense with an elite defense, Detroit's identity was built almost entirely around defense and that won't win you chips in today's league

Rip Hamilton, sheed, Chauncey and prince were all solid shooters, hard for me not to believe with todays standards of just letting it fly that these boys aren’t going to knock some down.

    • @Loganbub

The Pistons went on to become one of the best offensive teams for years after 04. The issues then became flip Saunders switching them to a zone defense and his coaching not being built to win in the playoffs. Plus losing Ben/LB hurt the defense even if it helped the offense.

@@tonytheg6612 solid shooters but todays shooters are elite and they’re not holding teams to 83 points

@@Johenz some of elite shooters today would be considered “solid” for the standards they had then. Shooters were only getting 4/5 threes a game, if that. Todays game of just letting it fly wasn’t around then. We will never know but imo if you gave the shooters then the ability to shoot a 3 whenever you want there would be much more “elite” shooters from that time. Holding teams to 83 doesn’t seam sustainable but teams would have a much harder time scoring on those guys I’ll tell you that, these were a group of guys that took pride into playing defense. Every single possession. You just don’t see that today.
