    Very good points and I agree with everything. ... Except the books. You will never take my book hoard away.

    Totally agree with the book, I do own lots of book but I've read 85% of them and will definitely finish the rest.

    The first one is actually pretty normal for the target audience of booktok but not in the space of a year at the recommended retail price. I don't even watch their videos, the algorithm just thinks it's a good recommendation because of my other interests

      Booktok's goal is consumption. You can read a book at a library

    • @perregrine
      @perregrine 11 годин тому

      @@pandakatiefominz I went to the library twice a week as a kid and I still use their digital services when they have what I'm interested in. I do go read books at a library when I'm in the city and I have a weird time gap to fill but a lot of adults can't just read a book at their local library if it's not open outside of traditional working hours. My local library only recently started opening every morning and afternoon Mon-Fri because it took them over 2 years to fill the vacancy that would allow them to have safe staffing numbers.
      Personally, I have ADHD so I've racked up late fines worth more than the books actually cost upfront. I also now have a chronic illness that means I can't just go out of the house whenever I want. I already have to pay towards any books I request and this is pretty much every book I would buy for myself anyway because my local library is only interested in buying thriller and romance pulp fiction.
      Books aren't like makeup or fast fashion or furniture where what you buy is somewhat customised to your needs and potentially unsanitary to get second hand. I have never struggled to find a home for a book I no longer want to keep because they are easy to circulate including donating them to a library. I'm happy to pay to support living authors and I found all of my classics (and books by authors I don't want to support financially) in charity shops. I have books I found in a box at the side of the road or on a garden wall with a sign saying to take what you're interested in.
      Overconsumption is bad but accumulating 100 books on your to be read pile is not a new level of consumption in response to influencers. If you only buy books because someone read the promo statement in a perky voice, then you've got a problem.

    Absolutely. But my ADHD, C-PTSD, EDS and autism will form a wolftron and destroy anyone who approaches my book collection. I never know if I'm about to crash for 6 months straight - I need my books.

    I grew up with wealthy kids (scholarship since elementary school). I was used to my classmates extravagant lifestyles, but it still shook me one day when my other "poor" friend (think being excited by our friends' leftovers because they could buy whatever they want for lunch) casually talked about buying 10 books at once, which I obviously could not afford. I realized that in the context of our upper-class classmates, I had mistakenly thought of us as in the same socioeconomic class. Her dad was a doctor. I qualified for free lunch.

    People have a right to collect, which includes books. Book collecting is a very normal thing, and should honestly be encouraged. The books will last. Be here tomorrow. Be passed to the future. Books should be bought. If not to be read, but to keep their importance alive to future generations.

    The world would be a happier place if we didn't compare ourselves to others and try to compete with them. They don't matter, you do you and you abd those you love will be way more happier. The less things I have, the happier I am. Don't collect junk and only buy quality that will last. Stop caring what those that don't care about you think.

    Theres an entire industry around renting out mansions and fancy cars and everything else you can think of to "influencers" to make them look more successful than they actually are

    Traveling every other month might not be normal, but it should be... or at least, having the financial freedom to should be. And some version of it *could* be if we got rid of billionaires and paid people fairly

  • @marisasanchez40

    Sorry girls, but as a reader myself, you don't need to buy five books in one sitting just because they are popular. Buy something that you would really enjoy and read more than once or go to a library. We have to keep them alive!!

  • @kdav521
    @kdav521 11 годин тому

    I wouldnt say "not normal", i would probably say like "not necessary". Because some of those ARE NORMAL. Like traveling every month? My mother in law travels more than 2-3 a month for business trips, and personal travel. Thats what she likes to do with her money. This month alone, we all went to south carolina. Then she went to texas, and yesterday she left for new york. My mom gets a new car every single year. She leases them and trades them in. She likes having new cars, clean fresh start, and she takes such good care of them she gets discounts on bigger nicer cars. Thats what she likes to do with her money.
    My point being they dont NEED to do these things, but they do make them happy. So it is NORMAL but not necessary.

    • @angelalovell5669
      @angelalovell5669 10 годин тому

      Uh.... your mum needs to sit and think about her carbon emissions, how she's contributing to a car market that is already wildly out of control and how she doesn't NEED these things to be happy, she's choosing them. She's choosing consumerism.
      You also need to realise that just because you have the money to spend on something doesn't mean it's a valid, decent or required expense. Donald Trump has a golden toilet.
