It’s true. A representative from Quaker Oats saw Anna Cooking and making pancakes at a country fair, and drew her picture and used her likeness to to make a “caricature “ of her and named the caricature “Aunt Jamima” And I’m sure if all of the “do gooders” of the world were to ask any POC … they wouldn’t want the pictures or images of Aunt Jamima, Uncle Ben, Famous Amos … etc… taken away. There is very little in the way that POC are represented… ok, modernize them, but leave them there.
We still have my moms Betty Crocker cookbooks from the 50s 60s 70s and 80s. It’s interesting to see how the recipes have changed over the years. Like Jello deserts we all the rage in the 60s lol. When I look at those books with their vanilla extract stains still there it brings back great memories of her.
I always gave them as wedding gifts. In the old days...lol the had a binder form that adored and it always had a spot of this or that I was making. I really did adore that cookbook...from how long to boil eggs to fancy dinners.
I understand completely. The flower in the pages, crusty sugar and vanilla stains...and all the written recipes or magazine recipes put in the pages. Lol...I lived baking with my mom. We were poor so...alot if bread products and all sweets were homemade.

Great story! I had home ec in high school, and really grateful I did. My 18 y/o daughter just told me the other day she wish they would offer not only home ec, but classes on taxes, voting, budgeting, basic car care and home repairs (basically early adult classes) in high school, make it mandatory. I agree, would be so helpful! My daughter and I love listening to you Bailey!!

Being a Minnesota native, I've known who the "real" Betty is since I was a kid. Even so, growing up with Betty was great. In the 60s and 70s, the Betty Crocker Cookbook was still the holy book of cooking. That, and just about anything in the grocery store with the Betty Crocker name on it automatically meant quality to a lot of people.
Another cool thing is that I'm pretty sure this is the same company that printed patterns on their flour sacks bc some families were making dresses out of them
My grandmother had two daughters and would remove stitches and remake their dresses for school from the flour sacks. She said that during the struggle of the dust bowl people assumed they were still wealthy ranchers because the girls had so many nice dresses. They had two, one for Sunday one for school, both made from sewing and redesigning the same flour sacks. I can’t imagine, my sewing skills are hysterically comical.
I was double catfished because the no-bake cookie recipe that I thought was my moms original recipe my entire childhood was just from a betty crocker cookbook
The chocolate oatmeal ones? We called them raggedy Robins. I only found out they're called no bake cookies when my best friend brought me some of "her moms special no bake cookies"... lol
In Sweden we have hemkunskap (home knowledge) and everyone has it during a few years where you learn about everything from laundry to cooking food and how to be climate smart. It was most people's favorite class from what I remember haha, ly bailey:)
🌹🌹🌹Did males take the class, as well as, females? I think that would be great. I think everyone ought to take a home economics class! I think it's great it included laundry too. I don't think I've known any people who could do laundry very well. All I did was use LOGIC, and it worked. Many of the people I've known could completely ruin clothes and linens FAST! Haha!🌹🌹🌹
@@roseannes6761 hahah yeah i get that, but yes there was both guys and girls and everything in between. And it was obligatory and you got grade for it. Btw there was also more in the class, like how to do the dishes and how to structure your economy :))
Bailey! You probably won't see this but thank you for posting! You make going through the day to day more tolerable and being able to listen to you while I'm busy makes things go by so much smoother. Thank you for all you do!
At the risk of dating myself, I had home economics in high school. There was actually an exra caricular organization called FHA (future homemakers of America). They gave out an award each year for Future Homemaker of the year. How do I know? Because I actually won this award my senior year.
I had home economics but never did we have an award thing. If we passed...that was an award lol 😆. It was literally my favorite class and I made all A's
Funny thing about the cake mixes: it's true that when they first came out, they only required you to add water. But housewives at the time complained that they were actually too easy to make and felt guilty that it was so low effort, so they changed it so that now it requires an egg as well. Lol
You know whats funny? In middle school during summer school our “computer” teacher actually taught us how to fill out a w2, i9 and how to start a business entity. Mind you that was early 90’s. Thank you Bailey for all you do for us on the channel! 💋
My senior year history teacher taught the entire how to fill out a w2. Including assigned a budget project where I'm the scenario, the student is "married" with two "kids". Including they have been working 10 years in a chosen career so we made a budget based on all that
@@rosa3299 thats amazing. We really do need this taught in schools. Many youths who go out into the world dont have any idea taxes/medicare/ss is taken from their checks. Or how to fill out any types of federal paperwork
@@Cloudy_SkieZ1 I was lucky. We did one in 8th grade for a career prep class that was mandatory for all 8th graders. Then in my senior my history teacher assigned all seniors the budget project that I explained. I also had a personal finance class that taught the basics of finance. I was lucky to have teacher that willing taught budgeting and that my school had a class all about finance. If I hadn't has the opportunities in senior I don't think I would even remember how to fill out a w2 form. Because that mandatory class was so long ago
These skills are so underrated! When I was a resident assistant I had so many freshman knocking on my door to ask how to do laundry, how to cash a check and even a couple asking how to fill out a check.
My mom's main cookbook was the Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook from the early 60's (she got when she was married in '63). It was a great recipe book and she still has it!
I have my Grandma's Betty Crocker Cookbook. It's my go to cookbook to this day. Grandma was married in the early 1920's. Not sure when she got the cookbook.
Bailey you look amazing! You prob won’t see this but I named my daughter bailey after you! In the Uk bailey is more of a boy name but when I watched the first video of you I was like ‘ when I have a girl, she’s soooo being called bailey monroe!’ Two of the most iconic queens 😍

The Depression Cake is also known as a Wacky Cake. When making the Wacky Cake if you remove 2 Tblsps of flour and add an additional 2 Tblsps of Cocoa (I use Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa) your cake will come out super moist and very dark chocolatey. My family has been making this cake recipe since the Great Depression. There was also a white cake recipe known as a lightening cake that has no flavoring in it yet comes out tasting fabulous. Both of these cakes can be made into layers , or Bundt cake.
I'm not sure if this is correct but it's what I found when searching: Ingredients: 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup water Directions: 1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2) Sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt into an 8x8-inch ungreased cake pan. Make 3 depressions in the flour mixture. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour water over all, then stir with a fork until well blended. 3) Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes.
Yes that's the recipe. When you sift your flour remove 2 Tablespoons. Then for your Cocoa I use Hershey Special Dark add 1 additional Tbls if making an 8x8 or 2 if you double to make a 13x9. I have made this cake even in the Backcountry wilderness in cast iron pans on a campfire but you need to adjust the recipe for altitude. It's a great recipe and my family has been making it for generations.
Thanks to Betty crocker and other brands that have easily available cake mixes, I was able to grow up with having a handmade birthday cake every year by my mother, she would make the frosting by scratch and then use the cake mix box for the cake. And this inspired me to learn how to bake from scratch and continue cake decorating like my mom did and now I've made a career out of it. So this was a very interesting video to listen to because I wouldn't be who I am today had I not have cakes handmade for my birthday. I'm very interested to know about Marjorie and what she did after she left Betty crocker, I'm on a car trip so I may have misunderstood but I believe you said she made her own business after leaving Betty crocker. What business was this how well did it go. I would love any kind of feedback you can give me about this!💜
I was a adverting/marketing major in college & that’s where I learned the truth about Betty Crocker. My whole world was turned upside down 😂 the tactics used to market to ppl are incredible.
The depression cakes aren't bad. You don't really taste the vinegar it's like a Red Velvet cake, which also has vinegar in it. The vinegar gives it a slight tangy flavor that you wouldn't expect to work but it does.
Had this playing in the car (maybe a little too loud) at that part and busted out laughing. The super cute southern granny next to me didn't think it was very hilarious 😂😂😂
I love baking and really appreciate my Home-Ec classes. I also feel like this story could be a Netflix series that could also help with practical things like the Depression Cake ( my Mom and I still uses a similar recipe for when we run out of eggs and milk) . It gives me Mad Men vibes and I am here for it😊

I remember when I found out that “making a cake from scratch” didn’t mean making it at home using Betty Crocker…it wasn’t that long ago either. Like when people asked me if I made my Betty Crocker cake from scratch I’d say “yeah, can’t buy this” bc I thought they were talking about the cake being already made when I bought it! Listen, I added egg, milk and butter or whatever, dirtied pans and mixed things together so that ish felt like real “baking from scratch” to me 😭
honey, it was your cake! you made from scratch: you added the ingredients & did the mixing and place it in the oven to bake+ it's your cake from scratch!

It’s true. A representative from Quaker Oats saw Anna Cooking and making pancakes at a country fair, and drew her picture and used her likeness to to make a “caricature “ of her and named the caricature “Aunt Jamima”
And I’m sure if all of the “do gooders” of the world were to ask any POC … they wouldn’t want the pictures or images of Aunt Jamima, Uncle Ben, Famous Amos … etc… taken away.
So true. I still have my mom’s from when she married in 1948. I prefer those recipes to the revised edition I received as a teenager. Big difference.

I've been saying this for years!
Hey Bailey, the first kitchen bible was really the Fannie Farmer cookbook - first published in 1896, I have had a copy my entire adult life. Cheers!
I have one of those. Real person?
But did it sell 75 million copies? If not, I don’t think you can call it the Kitchen Bible lol
I was so against Dark history because I loved your true crime and makeup series so much. Plus, Change is hard. After a while I caved and started listing to Dark history and now I'm in love with it. I get to have all the hilarious Bailey content with out the anxiety inducing hangover I get from watching too much true crime. Plus it's super interesting. Win win!

Yeah crime is pretty heavy on the noggin!
I've been watching Bailey for years and I have to say it's wildly impressive how she's able to present information. I was watching this one like huh you can never tell if these are fully scripted or not. What a skill.

I only found out they're called no bake cookies when my best friend brought me some of "her moms special no bake cookies"... lol
Okay but I have to say this, Bailey looks especially beautiful in this video, I can’t stop looking 😩💜

Haha!! I also had home ec. I failed. I hated that class
I had home economics but never did we have an award thing. If we passed...that was an award lol 😆. It was literally my favorite class and I made all A's

Yes!!! I loved home ec and the FHA! Such fun times with fun people back then. Thank you for reminding me of all that.
Funny thing about the cake mixes: it's true that when they first came out, they only required you to add water. But housewives at the time complained that they were actually too easy to make and felt guilty that it was so low effort, so they changed it so that now it requires an egg as well. Lol
Valid complaints if you ask me!!

I, too, would love these recipes.
Recipe please, You know we ❤ to try new to us things n it sounds so 😋 yummy😍❗
Following for update
I'm not sure if this is correct but it's what I found when searching:
Ingredients:
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup water
Directions:
1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
"It was the 20s an everything was frowned upon" 🙁 🤣🤣

The depression cakes aren't bad. You don't really taste the vinegar it's like a Red Velvet cake, which also has vinegar in it. The vinegar gives it a slight tangy flavor that you wouldn't expect to work but it does.
yes I have a friend that serves red velvet cake ( his great g mothers recipe) in his sandwich shop. People love it!

The vinegar works really well and is used in vegan cakes and such. Vinegar and baking soda are used for raising the cake like eggs do in baked goods.
I made a yummy vegan chocolate cake.
I love baking and really appreciate my Home-Ec classes. I also feel like this story could be a Netflix series that could also help with practical things like the Depression Cake ( my Mom and I still uses a similar recipe for when we run out of eggs and milk) .
