A lot of classic Disney princess movies are based off of true stories and most of them are dark, but I’d love to see Bailey cover them because I haven’t looked into them enough my self to have a clue about a single one however I’ve remained very curious 😭
Oh yes the original stories are grim. No pun intended. But the original mostly Grimm brothers stories are DARK. And they already lighted them up. The little mermaid original has haunted me. My grandma has a book full of the originals and I am traumatised
Pocahontas, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast... all rather dark origins. Sleeping Beauty and Mulan were always fiction, but the stories have been bastardized over time.

Bailey seems rejuvenated thanks to her break. I love how she makes you feel like she is your one cool friend that is going to educate AND entertain you. Bailey is MAGIC! 💜💐💐🌈
I still feel her disappointment. But... 😔🌹☘ I eloped! That, and a couple of other choices I've made, and although a young women of 22, I didn't have a clue about marriage! I still don't and we've been married for decades. 👍 ☮ 😱
yeah im gonna be having a regular wedding (ceremony & reception with everyone) but also v excited to not be doing all those traditional things haha tbh i havent known anyone in so long to actually do them though, i thin it's very.... boomer-esque?
One historical account that Bailey should look into which is pretty dark is regarding the Pied Piper of Hamlin. At least 100-200 children disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Giving a diamond as an engagement ring is also rooted back to medieval times when they believed different stones held different powers of protection (described in their medical textbooks called "lapidaries"). Emeralds, for example, protected against poison, and pearls could prevent heart failure, etc etc. The diamond was believed to be the catch-all, be-all of stones, believing that it was the best overall stone to protect against most myriad of things, so to gift your new bride a diamond was to say that you were trying to protect her from most harm that could come her way.
Watching this after already being opposed to rushing into marriage and having a wedding , solidifies my choices and I feel so blessed to be woken on this money making traditions that so many fall into. Thank you Bailey for educating us on this topic, it was very much needed when being pressured at a young age. 🙏🏽❤️
We just lightly put icing on each other's noses and handed each other a napkin. The photographer got a picture of us making funny faces as we went to wipe our noses. It is one of my favorite pictures of us.😊
I got married in a backyard and handmade everything, from decor to my wedding dress. My mom's husband made all the food, me and my mom made benchs and tables (and sold them after the wedding) and my sister in law did the photography. Cost like $1500 after selling the table sets 🥰 And my ring wasn't a 'wedding ring' it was a black stone (my fav) and like $400 lol.
I seen bench dyi very creative way to make things U thought smart how to save $ So many go out and spend thousands on 1 day of a event. Sure it’s important but I can’t see spending over $10.000 on one day! Those benches must of been upper nice
I’m 36, never been married, I’d be fine if it never happens. Especially having been in not one but TWO abusive relationships, freedom is glorious! I never fantasized about any dream weddings as a child like they do in the movies lol. But even if I had money to spend I still would never want a big expensive wedding. Literally go to the courthouse and have a fun party afterwards with loved ones.
Totally agree about not spending tons and going totally over the top! Both my siblings had big grand weddings, and although they were beautiful my fiancé and I are going a totally different route. Exactly what you said, we’re going to go to the courthouse and then have a party after with just family and close friends (not every person we’ve ever met lol). We want it to be about our love for each other and not about putting on a spectacle for everyone else.
Agree!! They finally gave Bailey the freedom to be Bailey and haven’t overly produced her. This is the Bailey we all have known and loved and I’m glad they realized there’s more than just her name for why we watch her! 💕

@@britnysnyder4991 yea I really felt like she was kinda just doing it because that's her job now. Tried to be funny and all but it wasn't really her, some mikro expressions gave that away. And now she really is in the tea having fun looking really destressed and happy
I literally had a courthouse wedding we got our marriage license and then scheduled an appointment to have a judge sign it off. The judge was actually happy he really loved doing weddings, He said it was a nice break from the divorce proceedings.
@@InsaneLaughter01Liturally this!!! I know people who get engaged to every partner and it lasts a year and there ends up being no wedding. I’ve never had that nor would I want anyone to propose so early on it’s just strange and pointless and a desp attempt of commitment. lol 😂” take this ring now u have promised not to cheat” like a ring has stopped someone cheating.
My third marriage, yes my third marriage, was at a county clerk's office and my mother who had severe dementia was my witness 🤣. We are still actually married and four times longer than either of my first two marriages. My advice is wait till you're older to do that stuff. Life is crazy🤗
My parents got married on a whole another continent fron their home with two Chinese dudes as their witnesses. Went to mcdonalds for lunch afterwards. They had their silver anniversary few years ago
My second marriage was in 1999 and we're still hanging on. Lol....We drove to Memphis and got married at Justice of the Peace then went to McDonald's to eat. Lol. I did the whole fancy wedding thing with the first wedding and it lasted 5 years.
Usually when a groom smashes the cake into the bride's face, when she specifically asks him not to, and she gets upset as well afterward, it's a sure sign that it won't last. There's animosity disguised as something fun and cute mixed with disrespect. A million wedding photographers and planners can't be wrong. And as for the burning bush...there's a cream for that.
I tell you what. I know my husband wouldn’t smash it in my face, cause your right, it wouldn’t last. It’s disrespectful if you ask me. To each their own though lol
To me it’s always been a power play from the groom. Expressing dominance immediately after getting married. Like I don’t have to respect my wife. So it makes sense that it’s a predictor of the marriages viability.
Me over here: “Babylon sounds like OG Handmaid’s Tale.” Bailey: “you know, like Handmaid’s Tale. And if the wife was caught cheating, she and her lover were bound together and thrown in a river.” Me: “ALSO LIKE HANDMAID’S TALE!”
Without the addition of the bride wearing men's attire, it's actually tradition for some Orthodox Jewish women to have their head shaved upon being wedded. Of course, they would proceed to wear a wig, but shaving the head was viewed to be the removal of an element that existed before becoming someone's wife.
Thank you for saying weddings are Cringe at every corner! That totally explains how I feel about them! I have felt so..... blech, uncomfortable, whatever, about weddings for years now. It's not because I'm single and bitter LOL it's really just.... a huge pointless and expensive performance for WHO?! I have seen a few of these performances and those folks are already divorced so i'm just like..... why...?..... but thanks for the food and drinks!
Yes!! And most funeral homes will prey on the emotions of the family to spend more, "show how much you cared for them" cause you know, the dead will know and care.
All of these facts aside, its so much more important to be on the same page as the person you're with. If one of you wants a big wedding but the other couldn't care less and would be happy to elope in a McDonald's you're going to clash badly.
I’ve always rejected the idea of being married since I was a girl. Always thought it was so misogynistic and patriarchal and I would have an extremely non-traditional wedding if anything. But the idea itself I don’t like the history of and what it has always meant. This just further confirmed everything I believed and felt. Thank you for doing a video on this! You had me cracking up the whole time.
I'm proud to say my wedding costed less than 2k for 2 venues, food, flowers, photographer, dress, husband's tux etc. Everyone thought it was a 20k wedding, but my dress was a closeout for $75, decor came from goodwill, we made the food and cake ourselves, flower arrangements were done by some volunteers from bulk bought flowers etc. Weddings can be done cheaply and still look amazing with creativity and hard work/planning. And a dash of luck 😆
She killed me with ladies who like an "Arby's Sandwich" she has the most hilarious descriptions for both female and male genitalia. I love her to pieces. 💞
i always looked up to my great grandma 'cause she got married at 28 in times where girls still usually got married at a very young age (15-18) and she agreed to give birth to only one kid and that's it, lived like a lady
She sounds like a smart lady! My grandmother married at 28, thinking she'd be a spinster forever, because her beau was forced to take over the family business when his brother eloped and left him in the lurch. But they eventually were able to marry. Had 5 kids (because they didn't know a thing about birth control) and were very happy together. Raised their kids in a Bristol, UK, during WWII.
You could do a series when it comes to weddings. So many different cultures do different and strange things for weddings. Not mention the ones where they marry the entire family. I did enjoy this episode.
I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to use Dark History as social studies supplementary learning. I swear I’d remember so much more in school with Bailey as teacher 🤩
Hey, have you done a Dark History on hygiene? I've always wondered when ppl became conscious of their smell. I knew an old lady once who used to brush her teeth with a type of bush here in Jamaica.
Thank you Kay for the amazing positive comment. And YES, I totally agree with you and I too am rooting for all out there. I love a major positive attitude. It’s hard to find one lately, and it’s super sad.
I got married two years ago during COVID and we kept it small. We did the dress, my sisters were bridesmaids, and we had a friend make us cheesecakes rather than a big wedding cake. It was more intimate and personal and we were with our nearest and dearest family members and friends. We even wanted that before COVID. We didn’t want to do the bouquet toss or the garter. We didn’t have a big dance party (just a friend with a speaker set up playing violin versions of popular music). And it was the best day ever. I’m hoping to see more of a trend that direction because for me, a lot of wanting a smaller wedding was because of cost and the icky consumerism of it all. And it ended up being absolutely perfect for us. Also-with what you said about Vegas weddings-I’d say it’s the same case with courthouse weddings too, which is so sad because those weddings can be incredibly sweet and intimate too.
I had my wedding in my husband’s grandparents backyard…super small, cute, intimate, classy! Not stressful at all!! I think we spent $600 and that was just on the catering. It was absolutely perfect🥺❤️
Hey Bailey just thought I'd let you know the true origin of the word "history", even though His Story fits like a glove, it comes from historía (Ancient Greek: ἱστορία, romanized: historíā) meaning to inquire or to judge 😊 Have a great day and keep teaching us more!
“Cringe around every corner..”😂😂😂 lol I’ve never really thought about it but you’re right! me & my husband eloped and didn’t even tell our fam🫣 total cost was $50 to sign our license 🙃
I love that Dark History is going strong and that the MMM Monday episodes are back too! They are getting me through a very hard time and I love that Bailey is continuing this and just going hard for us all out here 💖
My daughters were 9&10 when they started their menstrual, my oldest baby only cried cuz she wanted to go bac to the park and play! I couldn't imagine marrying them off at that age!!!🤦🏽♀️
I was only 11. It's scary to think that, if that occured in this era, instead of 1989, and I had become impregnated at that age because of SA, I would now be required to carry and give birth to my attackers baby. Furthermore, if I couldn't prove the assault on court, he could ask for shared custody.
Definitely not trying to justify the tradition (it's horrifying!) but ancient women often started their cycles much later than modern women due to poor nutrition and other health issues. So there probably weren't any 9 & 10 year old brides outside of possibly nobility. Lots of early to late teens, of course, but not often before that.
My husband and I got married in our preachers living room. The only people there were the preacher, his wife and son. I wore jeans and a flannel shirt. Had my hair in a messy bun. I wouldn’t change a thing. Best decision ever.
Yep I feel you. Got married in jeans and t-shirt, after Sunday service I ran up to the front of the church and asked the preacher who's my cousin if he could marry my husband and I real quick before church dismissed. Loved it, simple, not costly, and meant as much as a million dollars to us!!!
Okay, this episode was so interesting to me. I loved to learn about the history of marriage, I am getting married in May 2023 to my boyfriend, on our 10th anniversary. I am from the Netherlands so my dream was to have my wedding the "American way", because the traditions in the Netherlands are quite different. You see, my fiance is going to get me from my parents place, Where I will be sleeping the evening and night before the wedding, and that is where he Will see me for the first time in my dress and all. I never really liked that idea, because I always thought that me and my dad walking down the aisle was more of a "blessing" to my dad, since I am a real big daddy's girl. Now I'm thinking, this, the Dutch way, is really sweet too. Because it's a blessing for my parents to see my husband to be, taking me to our wedding location from their house, the house I grew up in, it has something special now i think about it. Idk, I normally don't comment because I feel like I have nothing interesting to say, but now I wanted to make an exception. I litteraly cannot wait to be wedded to him, because I always thought it was an honor to be able to carry his last name, although I'm not sure if that is also done the same way I'm America? 🤔 anyways thank you Bailey for helping me see the beauty in my own county's traditions. Now I see and understand not anything, including wedding traditions, have to be the American way,! I love you so much Bailey, thanks for everything and all your hard work!!!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Well, in less than three months, you shall be marrying your love of ten years! I don't even know you, but I am so very happy for you and your future husband. I actually love the tradition of your country and I definitely think you should have him retrieve you from your parent's home, in your wedding dress. I think it is sweet and more private and meaningful. I wish you every happiness life can offer! PS your English is excellent.
You should do a Dark History on the Dust Bowl. Just watched a documentary on it and the ecological and economic devastation that happened is so shocking. And the fact that it could potentially happen again is terrifying
I've Been married twice. The first marriage I was totally brainwashed into the American standard of weddings, though It was a smallish affair on a small budget with family and a few friends but it was extremely stressful with planning a venue, a reception and spending WAY too much on a dress that I only wore once! And of course it was a marriage doomed to fail. The Second time around we made an appointment to get married at the county clerk's building, the location was still really nice because it was outdoors on the harbor and with a simple ceremony. I ordered my dress from Amazon and only paid $40 for it and arranged my own bridal bouquet. We also ordered our rings off Amazon. Two friends attended and one took photos. My husband was happy because he could still wear jeans with a dress shirt and a snappy blazer. I loved how the photos came out! It was perfect and stress free!
Mine was similar, we basically had no wedding traditions, especially the garter thing 🤢 if my husband put his head up my dress in front of my family, I’d knee him in the face
Can I just say: You should open a school for the neurodiverse. You're THE ONLY person that I can listen to for hours without needing to speed up the video and can keep my ADHD brain focused and pay attention and actually learn stuff about history. You are a goddess.
I could not agree more!! I would go to that school all year round! I listen to her literally all the time. Vacuuming, shower, driving, just sitting there watching her videos. She keeps my mind distracted and personally, I LOVE that way she tells us about these people and/or events.
Another fun fact: The whole concept of holding flowers walking down the aisle originated from when people had the yearly baths and apparently weddings were most common around April due to the nicer weather but it was still two months away from the yearly bath as they were usually in June for some reason so the holding of flowers when walking down the aisle and past the guests was to disguise the smell of sweat 👀
It’s also not true. While people in the 18th century had clothes for seasons, people even farmers bathed more than once a year. If they didn’t have a well people bathed in natural waters such as creeks. Yes, people did use flowers as perfume, but not because they bathed yearly….did people have terrible hygiene compared to now? Yes. But that statement was a HUGE exaggeration.
I don't think that's entirely accurate ngl. I do 15th century medieval england reenactment and we have historically accurate showers and hand washing systems. Which there are texts corroborating this. Now I don't know about the earlier centuries, but cleanliness was close to godliness so they would have been clean, especially on a wedding. To today's standards they wouldn't have been the same, but they had the means to shower and be clean, as well as having soap and natural deodorant, like the natural flowers and herbs as well as using rose water. So 🤷🏻♀️
Bailey neglected to mention the rice or nuts being thrown represents fertility (seeds) and the guests throwing it is symbolically wishing the couple a long, fruitful life. Recently it was discovered that birds who ate the rice sometimes died because it expanded in their stomach so the custom changed to throwing confetti. Also, the “honey-wine” the newlyweds drank in antiquity is called “Mead” and it still exists (mainly in Europe.)
@@kacy9892 I find it interesting how people think people ate really bland foods back then too. As a side note. Things like hogweed seed, Alexander seed, Avens root and many more. They're flavours we're actually way stronger and often better than ours today. Most of which are just normalised because they were fancy expensive imports. I'm looking at you black pepper and cinnamon especially
Love your videos. I got married at a courthouse and I didn’t regret anything. My uncle spent over $75,000 and got divorced in one year. Marriage has nothing to do with the wedding ring or the party ( it’s nice to have) ❤
Being interested in modern history has been so hard, but having Bailey tie it in with ancient history so much and how she talks about topics in general makes it so much fun ❤️
My parents got married in the mid 50's. Both the engagement and the wedding rings had beautiful white pearls, my mother's birthstone, as the jewels. The pearls from each ring fit together to form a rounded rhombus shape. They were beautiful.
We planned our wedding in Vegas strictly because of my hatred of the crippling debt tradition I’ve watched friends incur. Was the best time and wouldn’t change it for a thing! I highly recommend!
I’ve never been to wedding where ppl did that, but I remember seeing so many clips of those things happening on Americas Funniest Home Videos & I’d always be uncomfortable watching those segments as a kid 🤣
My oldest daughter did a paper on the legal rights of Norwegian women... it seem quite forward thinking that they could own and inherit property ... the property they owned they controlled ... shield Maids could keep conqured property , including male slaves... and they could divorce and maintain anything they inherited or conquered.

Save the money for a comfy home. You don't want to start out a marriage in huge debt. Congrats on your upcoming nuptials 💒
yeah im gonna be having a regular wedding (ceremony & reception with everyone) but also v excited to not be doing all those traditional things haha tbh i havent known anyone in so long to actually do them though, i thin it's very.... boomer-esque?
…..you are literally getting married. That is THE tradition.
5 months later congratulations on the marriage ❤
One historical account that Bailey should look into which is pretty dark is regarding the Pied Piper of Hamlin. At least 100-200 children disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Giving a diamond as an engagement ring is also rooted back to medieval times when they believed different stones held different powers of protection (described in their medical textbooks called "lapidaries"). Emeralds, for example, protected against poison, and pearls could prevent heart failure, etc etc. The diamond was believed to be the catch-all, be-all of stones, believing that it was the best overall stone to protect against most myriad of things, so to gift your new bride a diamond was to say that you were trying to protect her from most harm that could come her way.
this is so interesting!! literally only thought that came about because of the debeers
i seriously got an awesome one! it may make a pretty necklace one day!!!! jk
Watching this after already being opposed to rushing into marriage and having a wedding , solidifies my choices and I feel so blessed to be woken on this money making traditions that so many fall into. Thank you Bailey for educating us on this topic, it was very much needed when being pressured at a young age. 🙏🏽❤️
I told my husband that if he shoved cake in my face, I would turn around, walk out, and go straight to a courthouse to get the marriage annulled.

I got married in a backyard and handmade everything, from decor to my wedding dress. My mom's husband made all the food, me and my mom made benchs and tables (and sold them after the wedding) and my sister in law did the photography. Cost like $1500 after selling the table sets 🥰
And my ring wasn't a 'wedding ring' it was a black stone (my fav) and like $400 lol.
That's so cute 🥰
The best wedding!

Watched this while getting ready for our Valentine's Day elopement at the courthouse! Completely agree, it's about you and that person.❤
I could have wrote this only difference I'm 38 haha
Totally agree about not spending tons and going totally over the top! Both my siblings had big grand weddings, and although they were beautiful my fiancé and I are going a totally different route. Exactly what you said, we’re going to go to the courthouse and then have a party after with just family and close friends (not every person we’ve ever met lol). We want it to be about our love for each other and not about putting on a spectacle for everyone else.
Absolutely loving dark history, Bailey really genuinely seems to be enjoying herself now
Agree!! They finally gave Bailey the freedom to be Bailey and haven’t overly produced her. This is the Bailey we all have known and loved and I’m glad they realized there’s more than just her name for why we watch her! 💕
Really enjoyed this week too. I haven't watched many lately but definitely back on it.
Feeling the same there was really a time where she did the job was funny but over the top funny and it seemed masked. Now she kinda got over that. I love her!

As long as folks treat marriage like a trend, there will always be divorces. 🤷🏻♀️
@@InsaneLaughter01Liturally this!!! I know people who get engaged to every partner and it lasts a year and there ends up being no wedding.
I got married at 16 at a court house. Still together almost 20 years later. 😊

My second marriage was in 1999 and we're still hanging on. Lol....We drove to Memphis and got married at Justice of the Peace then went to McDonald's to eat. Lol. I did the whole fancy wedding thing with the first wedding and it lasted 5 years.
Agreed
Usually when a groom smashes the cake into the bride's face, when she specifically asks him not to, and she gets upset as well afterward, it's a sure sign that it won't last. There's animosity disguised as something fun and cute mixed with disrespect. A million wedding photographers and planners can't be wrong. And as for the burning bush...there's a cream for that.
I tell you what. I know my husband wouldn’t smash it in my face, cause your right, it wouldn’t last. It’s disrespectful if you ask me. To each their own though lol
I read a comment from a wedding photographer saying it’s a somewhat reliable litmus test to predict which couples break up too!
To me it’s always been a power play from the groom. Expressing dominance immediately after getting married. Like I don’t have to respect my wife. So it makes sense that it’s a predictor of the marriages viability.
I've always heard it's bad luck to smash cake in the face. Definitely makes sense that there is some underlying psychology type of stuff to it too.
@@The_Cherokee_Gypsy same here. I specifically told him that if he did, there would be a fight and he wouldn't win
Me over here: “Babylon sounds like OG Handmaid’s Tale.”
Bailey: “you know, like Handmaid’s Tale. And if the wife was caught cheating, she and her lover were bound together and thrown in a river.”
Me: “ALSO LIKE HANDMAID’S TALE!”
As Monroe from Grimm said: ‘A wedding is SUPPOSED to be overwhelming so you don’t want to do it again!’
That must be why people only ever get married once
Love that show!!!
Yesssssss how I always have felt: “it’s like a series of unfortunate events…a cringe around every corner”

What about the dark history of funerals? I feel like they are so unnecessarily expensive!
Agreed!!!
Yes!! And most funeral homes will prey on the emotions of the family to spend more, "show how much you cared for them" cause you know, the dead will know and care.
Great idea. I want to be cremated and then everyone can eat food. The end.
@@susannaj1758 honestly! It is so crazy and sad how much they prey on innocent people and families!
@@DarkFire1536 same lol

She sounds smart
My grandma was the same! Lived her best life and got married at 29 🤩
She sounds like a smart lady!

@@BaileySarian Thank Bailey for doing this, you are doing an incredible job!

Actually helping my sister through a horrendous divorce and this comes on….PERFECT! Love you Bailey 🥰
Hugs to your sister. Divorce can be so soul crushing. I hope she is being gentle with herself. I would not wish that feeling on anyone.
My husband and I had 10 people at our wedding and spent less than 1k. We also did NOT do the garter thing cause EWWW! We just got a room instead.. .
love that!!
My husband and I had a hike-in wedding with no traditions or religion. It was a great day!
Mine was similar, we basically had no wedding traditions, especially the garter thing 🤢 if my husband put his head up my dress in front of my family, I’d knee him in the face
Since I was a kid I’ve thought the garter “search” is so inappropriate for a wedding
Watching this AS I do my makeup for my wedding today 😅💍

I could not agree more!! I would go to that school all year round! I listen to her literally all the time. Vacuuming, shower, driving, just sitting there watching her videos. She keeps my mind distracted and personally, I LOVE that way she tells us about these people and/or events.
Can assure you it’s not an ADHD thing.

That's disgusting
