Me over here: “Babylon sounds like OG Handmaid’s Tale.” Bailey: “you know, like Handmaid’s Tale. And if the wife was caught cheating, she and her lover were bound together and thrown in a river.” Me: “ALSO LIKE HANDMAID’S TALE!”
i always looked up to my great grandma 'cause she got married at 28 in times where girls still usually got married at a very young age (15-18) and she agreed to give birth to only one kid and that's it, lived like a lady
She sounds like a smart lady! My grandmother married at 28, thinking she'd be a spinster forever, because her beau was forced to take over the family business when his brother eloped and left him in the lurch. But they eventually were able to marry. Had 5 kids (because they didn't know a thing about birth control) and were very happy together. Raised their kids in a Bristol, UK, during WWII.
Without the addition of the bride wearing men's attire, it's actually tradition for some Orthodox Jewish women to have their head shaved upon being wedded. Of course, they would proceed to wear a wig, but shaving the head was viewed to be the removal of an element that existed before becoming someone's wife.
We just lightly put icing on each other's noses and handed each other a napkin. The photographer got a picture of us making funny faces as we went to wipe our noses. It is one of my favorite pictures of us.😊
I literally had a courthouse wedding we got our marriage license and then scheduled an appointment to have a judge sign it off. The judge was actually happy he really loved doing weddings, He said it was a nice break from the divorce proceedings.
@@InsaneLaughter01Liturally this!!! I know people who get engaged to every partner and it lasts a year and there ends up being no wedding. I’ve never had that nor would I want anyone to propose so early on it’s just strange and pointless and a desp attempt of commitment. lol 😂” take this ring now u have promised not to cheat” like a ring has stopped someone cheating.
Usually when a groom smashes the cake into the bride's face, when she specifically asks him not to, and she gets upset as well afterward, it's a sure sign that it won't last. There's animosity disguised as something fun and cute mixed with disrespect. A million wedding photographers and planners can't be wrong. And as for the burning bush...there's a cream for that.
I tell you what. I know my husband wouldn’t smash it in my face, cause your right, it wouldn’t last. It’s disrespectful if you ask me. To each their own though lol
To me it’s always been a power play from the groom. Expressing dominance immediately after getting married. Like I don’t have to respect my wife. So it makes sense that it’s a predictor of the marriages viability.
I got married two years ago during COVID and we kept it small. We did the dress, my sisters were bridesmaids, and we had a friend make us cheesecakes rather than a big wedding cake. It was more intimate and personal and we were with our nearest and dearest family members and friends. We even wanted that before COVID. We didn’t want to do the bouquet toss or the garter. We didn’t have a big dance party (just a friend with a speaker set up playing violin versions of popular music). And it was the best day ever. I’m hoping to see more of a trend that direction because for me, a lot of wanting a smaller wedding was because of cost and the icky consumerism of it all. And it ended up being absolutely perfect for us. Also-with what you said about Vegas weddings-I’d say it’s the same case with courthouse weddings too, which is so sad because those weddings can be incredibly sweet and intimate too.
I had my wedding in my husband’s grandparents backyard…super small, cute, intimate, classy! Not stressful at all!! I think we spent $600 and that was just on the catering. It was absolutely perfect🥺❤️
She killed me with ladies who like an "Arby's Sandwich" she has the most hilarious descriptions for both female and male genitalia. I love her to pieces. 💞
Thank you Kay for the amazing positive comment. And YES, I totally agree with you and I too am rooting for all out there. I love a major positive attitude. It’s hard to find one lately, and it’s super sad.
I love that Dark History is going strong and that the MMM Monday episodes are back too! They are getting me through a very hard time and I love that Bailey is continuing this and just going hard for us all out here 💖
Can I just say: You should open a school for the neurodiverse. You're THE ONLY person that I can listen to for hours without needing to speed up the video and can keep my ADHD brain focused and pay attention and actually learn stuff about history. You are a goddess.
I could not agree more!! I would go to that school all year round! I listen to her literally all the time. Vacuuming, shower, driving, just sitting there watching her videos. She keeps my mind distracted and personally, I LOVE that way she tells us about these people and/or events.
Okay, this episode was so interesting to me. I loved to learn about the history of marriage, I am getting married in May 2023 to my boyfriend, on our 10th anniversary. I am from the Netherlands so my dream was to have my wedding the "American way", because the traditions in the Netherlands are quite different. You see, my fiance is going to get me from my parents place, Where I will be sleeping the evening and night before the wedding, and that is where he Will see me for the first time in my dress and all. I never really liked that idea, because I always thought that me and my dad walking down the aisle was more of a "blessing" to my dad, since I am a real big daddy's girl. Now I'm thinking, this, the Dutch way, is really sweet too. Because it's a blessing for my parents to see my husband to be, taking me to our wedding location from their house, the house I grew up in, it has something special now i think about it. Idk, I normally don't comment because I feel like I have nothing interesting to say, but now I wanted to make an exception. I litteraly cannot wait to be wedded to him, because I always thought it was an honor to be able to carry his last name, although I'm not sure if that is also done the same way I'm America? 🤔 anyways thank you Bailey for helping me see the beauty in my own county's traditions. Now I see and understand not anything, including wedding traditions, have to be the American way,! I love you so much Bailey, thanks for everything and all your hard work!!!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
@@MistaMaine. thankyou so so much for your sweet comment!! Brought me Joy! 😊⚘️🥰 same goes to you tho, nothing but happiness, bliss, and joy to you too!!
Well, in less than three months, you shall be marrying your love of ten years! I don't even know you, but I am so very happy for you and your future husband. I actually love the tradition of your country and I definitely think you should have him retrieve you from your parent's home, in your wedding dress. I think it is sweet and more private and meaningful. I wish you every happiness life can offer! PS your English is excellent.
Mine was similar, we basically had no wedding traditions, especially the garter thing 🤢 if my husband put his head up my dress in front of my family, I’d knee him in the face
His-Story... This feels like the time I realised Rapidash was a play on rapid-dash. I sat there doing nothing but thinking about how silly I felt for not seeing it sooner, about what other Pokémon puns I could be missing out on. The world is our oyster, and these puns are the beauties that are pearls.
My daughters were 9&10 when they started their menstrual, my oldest baby only cried cuz she wanted to go bac to the park and play! I couldn't imagine marrying them off at that age!!!🤦🏽♀️
I was only 11. It's scary to think that, if that occured in this era, instead of 1989, and I had become impregnated at that age because of SA, I would now be required to carry and give birth to my attackers baby. Furthermore, if I couldn't prove the assault on court, he could ask for shared custody.
Definitely not trying to justify the tradition (it's horrifying!) but ancient women often started their cycles much later than modern women due to poor nutrition and other health issues. So there probably weren't any 9 & 10 year old brides outside of possibly nobility. Lots of early to late teens, of course, but not often before that.
You should do a Dark History on the Dust Bowl. Just watched a documentary on it and the ecological and economic devastation that happened is so shocking. And the fact that it could potentially happen again is terrifying
Being interested in modern history has been so hard, but having Bailey tie it in with ancient history so much and how she talks about topics in general makes it so much fun ❤️
Love your videos. I got married at a courthouse and I didn’t regret anything. My uncle spent over $75,000 and got divorced in one year. Marriage has nothing to do with the wedding ring or the party ( it’s nice to have) ❤
Was already planning to have a very non-traditional wedding (if that ever even happens) because of the roots of these traditions… (taking last names, father down the aisle, garter toss, etc). But I definitely learned more than I knew before! Always love your take on dark history💜 thank you!
In some places including central asia and sub-saharan Africa they have a practice called bride kidnapping, Bride kidnapping ( abit different to what Bailey spoke about ) also known as marriage by abduction or marriage by capture, is a practice in which a man abducts the woman he wishes to marry. In rural Kyrgyzstan, where over 60% of the country's population lives, surveys suggests 1 in 3 marriages begins with a kidnapping, I watched a documentary on this, and its genuinely terrifying. Those poor girls are jumped by a group of men and usually shoved into a car and taken to the man's family home where she is convinced ( coerced) into agreeing to marry him, very often against her will. These woman will fight and kick and scream but usually eventually give in. I recommend watching some of the vice documentarys on this subject.
I've Been married twice. The first marriage I was totally brainwashed into the American standard of weddings, though It was a smallish affair on a small budget with family and a few friends but it was extremely stressful with planning a venue, a reception and spending WAY too much on a dress that I only wore once! And of course it was a marriage doomed to fail. The Second time around we made an appointment to get married at the county clerk's building, the location was still really nice because it was outdoors on the harbor and with a simple ceremony. I ordered my dress from Amazon and only paid $40 for it and arranged my own bridal bouquet. We also ordered our rings off Amazon. Two friends attended and one took photos. My husband was happy because he could still wear jeans with a dress shirt and a snappy blazer. I loved how the photos came out! It was perfect and stress free!
As someone who has been in the jewelry business for 8 years and being DCA certified and having to learn about De Beers. I can confirm you are correct about the diamond engagement ring. The reason they made up the wedding band was essentially to make more money. Thats why I have a tanzanite wedding ring. Its not as common as an engagement ring and I love the deep violet color. They also used to use just plain gold bands as their wedding rings or precious gemstones (rubies, sapphires, or emeralds).
My parents got married in July 1957 my dad wasn't earning much money at the time so when they got engaged he bought her a ring with white sapphires. These are much more rare than diamonds. Now they have both passed on and I have Mom's beautiful ring I love wearing it.
It's like those mother-in-law's of the bride that we hear about. They show up in a white floor length dress, that's also lace, and has a small train. Joan isn't that bad, but you're correct, she's got a lot of nerve. ✌from 🇨🇦
My parents got married in the mid 50's. Both the engagement and the wedding rings had beautiful white pearls, my mother's birthstone, as the jewels. The pearls from each ring fit together to form a rounded rhombus shape. They were beautiful.
My husband and I got married in our preachers living room. The only people there were the preacher, his wife and son. I wore jeans and a flannel shirt. Had my hair in a messy bun. I wouldn’t change a thing. Best decision ever.
Yep I feel you. Got married in jeans and t-shirt, after Sunday service I ran up to the front of the church and asked the preacher who's my cousin if he could marry my husband and I real quick before church dismissed. Loved it, simple, not costly, and meant as much as a million dollars to us!!!
My wedding day was very chill and simple. My stepson was with us and also my husbands sister and one of my best friends as witnesses 🥰 afterwards we went to a restaurant and had a nice meal. than we took some photos at a park. it was end of february and just perfect.
The word history comes from the Greek word "historia", which meant "inquiry, the act of seeking knowledge, as well as the knowledge that results from inquiry".
I'm Hmong and in my culture (back in the day) if you wanted to marry a girl, all you had to do was kidnap her and she would have to marry you. My father is very traditional, but this was one of the traditions he said he was happy ended. He said because he wouldn't want to have to k!ll someone for taking me XD made my day when he said that.
My oldest daughter did a paper on the legal rights of Norwegian women... it seem quite forward thinking that they could own and inherit property ... the property they owned they controlled ... shield Maids could keep conqured property , including male slaves... and they could divorce and maintain anything they inherited or conquered.
The whole money making industry isn’t just weddings. Every holiday, especially Christmas is a huge money maker for the industry and we all go along with it lol
I just went to a wedding this past weekend and it was fun and the bride looked absolutely gorgeous, but it all just felt like a pageant. I told my boyfriend that I don’t want a wedding. All that being said, I can’t wait to watch this! I started it on the drive home but I’m going to pause, get home, get cozy, and dive in. You’re the best Bailey 💕
When you added dark history to the things you do I was instantly in love. And every episode you just prove why! I love knowing there’s someone out there willing to do the work so we all don’t have to 😭
I’m married, didn’t want a traditional wedding… got a traditional wedding. It was definitely a celebration for everyone else. It’s been 17 years and I still get a touch upset about it all. 😢
We planned our wedding in Vegas strictly because of my hatred of the crippling debt tradition I’ve watched friends incur. Was the best time and wouldn’t change it for a thing! I highly recommend!
I've never really liked the thought of "marriage" but the thought of having a "wedding" where you get to wear a dress & just feel beautiful for a day sounds nice 😂😌
Marriage is better than the wedding if you are in the right headspace for it. It is a big chance, but it is nice growing old with someone... especially if you respect each other and grow with each other.
My husband and I decided to get married after 13 years because of health insurance. We had a hike-in wedding with only the people we really wanted to spend the day with in the woods. Best. Wedding. Ever. The marriage thing is going pretty well, too.
That’s the problem, people want wedding even if they are not prepared to get married. Many people spend thousands on wedding just to divorce even when they haven’t completely paid off the money they spent. Marriage is better.
I get it. Many women have dreamed about that "queen for a day" experience since they were very little girls. (Thanks Disney! LOL) Nowadays, every wedding is unique and personal. I hope you get the one of your dreams when you are ready. Until then, try a spa day. Get pampered and then throw on a dress and go out with your BFF. You are worth investing in.
I would love to see a Dark History on female circumcision. It's a super disturbing topic that doesn't get talked about nearly enough! Male circumcision too!
@@collbac5139Not necessarily. She covers other controversial topics, including religions and cultures. Why would genital mutilation be off the table? She literally just covered child marriages through the eras 😂
This is definitely sad because there are a lot of girls and women TO THIS DAY who run and escape their culture because they are suppose to be circumcised by the next full moon or something
Thing about the code of Hammurabi is that the "laws" written there were not codified laws like today. They weren't prescriptive. For example, they werent used by judges to look up what to do in different situation. They were not enforced across the board like we expect of laws today. They were more of a description of what usually happened in a given situation in general. Still a cool document.
For our wedding we cringed at the thought of doing the guarder thing or getting cake smashed. I spent way too much money on my hair and makeup to be ruined. It was more of a drunken party and our ceremony was less than 15 minutes, no choreographed dances either 😂
heard the podcast version on my vacation in San diego one morning while getting ready for the day 💛💛💛 will always remember that. so happy to see the visual version. I love you bailey, stay in our lives 💛
Hi just interested to know the history of marriage in Asia and Africa as well, granted i understand there are different tribes and groups within these 2 but it'd be interesting to see what they were about before it all became westernized.
I'd love to see Bailey tackle children's stories - Disney, Grimm, Christian Anderson, etc.

Bailey: “you know, like Handmaid’s Tale. And if the wife was caught cheating, she and her lover were bound together and thrown in a river.”
Me: “ALSO LIKE HANDMAID’S TALE!”
i always looked up to my great grandma 'cause she got married at 28 in times where girls still usually got married at a very young age (15-18) and she agreed to give birth to only one kid and that's it, lived like a lady
👏👏👏👏👏
She sounds smart
My grandma was the same! Lived her best life and got married at 29 🤩
She sounds like a smart lady!
Yesssssss how I always have felt: “it’s like a series of unfortunate events…a cringe around every corner”
Without the addition of the bride wearing men's attire, it's actually tradition for some Orthodox Jewish women to have their head shaved upon being wedded. Of course, they would proceed to wear a wig, but shaving the head was viewed to be the removal of an element that existed before becoming someone's wife.
Watched this while getting ready for our Valentine's Day elopement at the courthouse! Completely agree, it's about you and that person.❤
I told my husband that if he shoved cake in my face, I would turn around, walk out, and go straight to a courthouse to get the marriage annulled.

I literally had a courthouse wedding we got our marriage license and then scheduled an appointment to have a judge sign it off. The judge was actually happy he really loved doing weddings, He said it was a nice break from the divorce proceedings.
As long as folks treat marriage like a trend, there will always be divorces. 🤷🏻♀️
I read a comment from a wedding photographer saying it’s a somewhat reliable litmus test to predict which couples break up too!
To me it’s always been a power play from the groom. Expressing dominance immediately after getting married. Like I don’t have to respect my wife. So it makes sense that it’s a predictor of the marriages viability.
I've always heard it's bad luck to smash cake in the face. Definitely makes sense that there is some underlying psychology type of stuff to it too.
@@The_Cherokee_Gypsy same here. I specifically told him that if he did, there would be a fight and he wouldn't win
The way dark history has evolved in less than a year is everything, go team!!! Love you and your content soo much Bailey 🖤
Props to you for doing it so lowkey with such a small budget. Hopefully more people choose this type of parties

I love you so much Bailey, thanks for everything and all your hard work!!!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
I wish you and ur boyfriend all the best. Nothing but happiness and joy🌼 This was beautiful to read.
Inge, the Dutch way sounds lovely. I’d go for that. Wishing you the very best! 💜

My husband and I had 10 people at our wedding and spent less than 1k. We also did NOT do the garter thing cause EWWW! We just got a room instead.. .
love that!!
My husband and I had a hike-in wedding with no traditions or religion. It was a great day!
Mine was similar, we basically had no wedding traditions, especially the garter thing 🤢 if my husband put his head up my dress in front of my family, I’d knee him in the face
Since I was a kid I’ve thought the garter “search” is so inappropriate for a wedding
I have no regrets getting married in Las Vegas back in 2015. Hubby and I had zero intention on having a big wedding. The ceremony was only $400.

My daughters were 9&10 when they started their menstrual, my oldest baby only cried cuz she wanted to go bac to the park and play! I couldn't imagine marrying them off at that age!!!🤦🏽♀️
so wild, right?
They put growth hormone in vegetables now: kids enter puberty years sooner now, and they grow to be 6+ feet tall....
@@BaileySarian Thank Bailey for doing this, you are doing an incredible job!

I have seen these documentaries so scary.
The nerve of Joan to show up to Baileys wedding in a veil smdh
I love joan 🤣
It's like those mother-in-law's of the bride that we hear about. They show up in a white floor length dress, that's also lace, and has a small train. Joan isn't that bad, but you're correct, she's got a lot of nerve. ✌from 🇨🇦
Bailey you should do a Dark History on Saint Valentine!!
My parents got married in the mid 50's. Both the engagement and the wedding rings had beautiful white pearls, my mother's birthstone, as the jewels. The pearls from each ring fit together to form a rounded rhombus shape. They were beautiful.

Yep I feel you. Got married in jeans and t-shirt, after Sunday service I ran up to the front of the church and asked the preacher who's my cousin if he could marry my husband and I real quick before church dismissed. Loved it, simple, not costly, and meant as much as a million dollars to us!!!

I see you-🤍 also… this a totally valid take and not a statement about which is better, but at least Crissy and I know how others feel, lol
