I agree with your review entirely, but there is one more problem: The checkpoints are horrendous. There are plenty of times where i get really far on a planet, die, and be sent back. Then, i beat the section i was stuck on, die a few seconds later, and have to do it all over again.
CliffTurbo I got a noise complaint cuz I got almost to the nanotech dispenser after dying to those crabs like 80 times, missed the screamer, and got boned AGAIN and yelled “MOTHERFUCKER!” At the top of my lungs
@@roseolivas08 you're uh, not supposed to jump right into them. theres a hole around the corner to snipe the guy that wakes them up, or use the visibomb, mine glove, devastator, or even the blaster to kill them. the original game is all about creative use of limited tools and low health is a reflection of that.
MultiTarded Honestly, I can feel that. I really can. But, please, don’t dismiss this series so easily. It’s an overall wonderful experience and you owe it to yourself to give them a try. I’m glad I’m not the only one who pointed out the bad checkpoints in the earlier games. God, that would piss me off. Thankfully, the bad is HEAVILY outweighed by the good with this series in my opinion.

10:00 The Collection isn't very bad, in case you're wondering. The new widescreen makes some originally off-screen stuff look funny in cutscene (like when Ratchet gets the courier ship, and he's just frozen as the Novalis guy shows you it landing), and audio loops badly in the first game, but that's it. The Vita version of the first game is so much worse.
Getting a platinum trophy in R&C 1 on the HD collection is one of my proudest moments in gaming, not just because its my first platinum but also because of the significance of this series to my childhood
I sunk so many hours into this series....Going Commano in particular. Managed to get every single weapon upgrade. Imo, it's the absolute most intoxicatingly addictive part of these games

Hay, I earned the RYNO the legit way when I was younger and loved every second leading up to it because I was so excited to see what my hard work would get me and I definitely felt the effort was worth it.
the thing about insomniac "throwing spyro away" is untrue. They never owned spyro, universal did. When Universal made a deal with sony as a middle man, Insomniac left because of feeling cheated on their work by receiving less money.
I didn't know about the glitchwhen farmed all the bolts about 15 years ago when I played it through and through. One of the reasons this is my least favorite of the main line games. Okay the controls suck even more than in Crash 1.
Huge fan of the series despite my introduction to it being Size Matters on PSP... Got the HD collection a few months ago and have been having a blast with it since! Sad to see your original lets plays of these games gone, but your reviews are even more enjoyable!
Actually, Sly had more graphical glitches, and the synthesis for Sly 1's music is really messed up, which not only caused the music to sound weird, but screwed up Miz Ruby's boss fight as well. The same thing happened with Jak 2. The problem with the Ratchet Collection is that Ratchet's helmet is so big, and it isn't even attatched to his head, which I'm not even sure why that couldn't be fixed. Deadlocked HD has an issue where objects will randomly jitter around during cutscenes.
Gotta say you did a great review I just got the collection for my birthday along with Jak and Daxter Collection. I actually did get the RYNO on my first playthrough but they patched the glitch you mentioned about the hoverboard races so I had to play giant Clank in Quarto many times till I hit 150k. was tedious but I still had fun lol. I just finished Going Commando but will replay it later since I rushed it can't wait for your review
I know this is super old, but on the Collection issue, one of the Ratchet Developers talked about it at one point (somewhere, can't find it at the moment), and what happened was that a lot of the graphical glitches in the Collection aren't exactly glitches, they were programming cheats built into the game's code. They weren't noticeable on the PS2 because, well PS2. But when the transition was made to PS3 all of those little cheats suddenly were in HD, and could be seen. And they were built into the game, so fixing them would have required a lot of changes to the code, which probably would have broken other stuff.
I gotta be honest, I actually liked that the first game didn't pause the game during the weapon select screen, it made me feel the tension of combat more, having to time out when I can switch weapons whether or not I already ran out of ammo. I was so happy a few months ago(around Fall of 2019) I discovered for the first time that in Going Commando you have the option to turn on or off the quick select pause. In fact, you can do that as well in Deadlocked, Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time. For some reason Up Your Arsenal doesn't have that choice, maybe they just forgot because they felt really rushed with that game.
When I was a kid, I got stuck on Blackwater City at the flooding water escape part. Because I was stuck, and I loved the game, I just repeatedly played through the level until I had enough bolts to buy the RYNO. Yup, I was that dedicated.
The collection isn't terrible but it is undeniably riddled with glitches. What kind of glitches? Well, it has the whole gamut honestly. Graphical glitches (there was a terrifying one in Gorda City where Qwark's, or Steve's, eye pupils disappeared).Sound glitches (the final boss music just doesn't play at all for me and now I can't hear the normal Umbris theme anymore- just the Snagglebeast boss music for some reason). Interface glitches (When exiting water after swimming, the O2 bar doesn't disappear completely- you can see a little segment jutting out from the side of the screen). So yeah, the HD Collection is not very well-polished at all; but if you're just in it to play the games then it's worth putting up with these glitches.

Vincent Kelly Strange. I've done the final boss a few times now and the music has never played for me. I think it might be because I never go right into fighting him- I always go back to the ship and tie up loose ends first.

This is probably the earliest gaming experience I've ever had outside of maybe watching my sister play Spyro. No game in the series can beat these first 4.
Can I just say real quick that I kind of hate how you put the Spyro 1 credits song at the end of the video? Yes, it does make sense and it's also a very nice throwback, but for me personally, that frigging song feels so melancholic. It always reminds me how I got through the end of an amazing game. And that makes me sad. I get that feeling with this video too.

This is gonna sound weird but, could you do a top "anything" Spyro list. I ask this because, A. You clearly have a love for the series, and I believe you could make a great countdown! & B. There are little to no Spyro countdowns on youtube. Levels, Music, Bosses, whatever.
I never played the full ratchet and clank game i only played bits and pieces on the jampack discs but i loved those bits and pieces and im definatly gonna get the new game as well as buying the original game so i can finally play the full game
Nice review. I agree with you on it not being as good as the sequels. It's still a lot of fun, and I recommend getting it as an entry into the series due to its relative simplicity, but the sequels are definitely better. I only replay the first one for nostalgia nowadays. Slight correction though: you CAN get some of the golden weapons before New Game+. While the golden weapons room in New Game+ is very obvious, there is a golden weapons room you can access whenever you want (well, as soon as you get access to its planet at any rate). However, it is hidden, and it doesn't contain ALL of the golden weapons, so New Game+ is still recommended, particularly to blind playthroughs.
I bought this game along with Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal with the Ratchet & Clank collection. I must say, I didn't grow up with a PS2, but if I did I would easily choose this series over the Jak & Daxter games.
I've seen a playthrough of the HD collection and there are issues with it. Some parts have lagg and things like the oxygen bar wont go away fully but im sure there is a video on youtube explaining the problems.

I actually never played this series growing up, I played mainly Crash (obviously). When I played these, I played them via the ps3 trilogy disc and I had no technical issues that I can remember. Maybe it's an NTSC issue since I'm in Europe. Great series though, I wish Jak and Daxter had the same treatment and longevity as this series.
besides, strafing made the game a lot easier. all you had to do is press two buttons and its a promis win... the first game was the 2nd most hard in the trilogy just because it had no strafe! the third one was the hardest because the enemies just did so much damage and seriously there were a lot more enemies in the third game, but i think strafing made the game a LOT more easy, to the point it was kinda boring... the thing i love the most about the first game was the automatic camera. you could just relax with your thumb on the shapes without having to control your camera all the time. GENIUS!
Indeed. I say Going Commando is the hardest, mainly because of there being more puzzles and you don't really get any allies in the game that help during battle.
the lack of strafing is justified because most enemies die in one hit, those that dont are not too difficult to kill and are spread out far enough to not be too hard or easy. if you played spyro on ps1, you will feel right at home with the controls of this game and be good at it. my favorite one is this one for its gameplay. the strafing took away the challenge in future rc games. best story in the series in my opinion

I never noticed the vendor beeing squashed, and i have played the original Version, but as i said it could be because of the fact that European Televisions are sligthly different than american ones.
If you just get one character from each of the 8 elements you're basically set and since the game comes with 3 characters you only have to buy 5 figures.
Well actually, the Suck Cannon is really useful, last time I replayed the game, it was one of the most used weapons for me, also, to get the RYNO, you only really need to play through Challenge Mode once.
This game series has probably my favorite soundtrack ever like it combines so many great genres of music you got traditional orchestral elements but that is just the top of the barrel there are so many great music genres like rock techno acid break beat jungle hip-hop ambient industrial trip hop drum and bass drum and bass and of course all sorts of quirky psychedelic samples and instruments straight out of idm love it
I must suck at this game or something because I had so much trouble with the last boss that I thought I had to get the Rhyno to beat him so I farmed bolts in an early level for a few hours. Even then I barely beat him . . .

when you hear how insomniac actually went about making ratchet and clank(the series) on ps2, it's very easy to see how it would be hard to make that into a collection running on the ps3. You should look into a channel called uselesspodcast. It's run my ex-insomniac employees who helped make ratchet and clank on the ps2, and they lets play ratchet 2 and 3. In one of their videos they talk about why it was probably a nightmare to make the games into a collection on the ps3.
Ratchet and clank only 7 hours? Yeah right. My first playthrough as a kid took like 24 hours. Nowadays if i go back to play, its 10 hours without skipping cutscenes. Maybe 9 if I skip cutscenes... you must be only doing the bare minimum. Also I made it through the game with just the bomb glove, and suck cannon, blaster, and devastator. Bomb and suck cannon are free and are borderline overpowered. Visibomb needed if you want all the gold bolts.
Ultimate Gamer I've played a few honestly. The first one (of course), all four one, a crack in time (my favorite), into the nexus and I'm currently trying to get the latest one. That angry Bird movie does look funny as fuck though.
Now I really want to play some of the games but I don't have any of the consoles compatible with them. The Angry Birds movie does look hilarious and I don't think those 2 movies will be bad because video games movies tend to be bad. If I'm not mistaken, I think those 2 are the first animated video game movies.

lol what are you talkiing about? it took me about idk,,,, 3 days of gameplay to get the ryno. i didnt even finish the game before getting it. it was relatively hard, and sure i had to go back and forth from blackwater city to w/e planet else that gave good amount of blots per run, but it was doable. heck, i think i ruined my last boss battle because of this weapon, i didnt know that 4 hits would kill it, and it wasn't fun at all... it was the first game i beat on the ps2 so it was fun, but it could have been more fun without the ryno i guess...
I don't know who told you they botched the collection but it is fantastic. I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find added glitches maybe but I have beaten each game on the collection several times and at no point did I find any memorable problems (meaning if I did find a glitch then it must have been so minor that I can't even remember it).
The only thing I can really think of that they messed up is some of the visuals in Going Commando, like the health bar. I honestly think the collection makes Going Commando look the worst visually, and it kinda makes me regret giving away my original copy.
jackbrokeheart Ratchet's helmet is always way too big for his head in my copy (in both GC and UYA), but they do at least play pretty well for the most part.

I don't notice anything weird in the first one, the second was had a glitch where clank would be walking in a cutscene but his legs won't move.

I replayed this recently, and it holds up SO much better than I remembered.
Ratchet and Clank is my favorite series of all time. I have just as much fun playing it in my mid 20s as I did when I was 9.

FYI, it takes just over one playthrough to get enough bolts for the RYNO if you don't buy all of the other optional items (like weapons).

Do you need a reason to use weapons with cool effects over wacking with a wrench? Straffing is a staple in any shooter game for sure. Nice review man.

I bought this game along with Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal with the Ratchet & Clank collection. I must say, I didn't grow up with a PS2, but if I did I would easily choose this series over the Jak & Daxter games.

I've seen a playthrough of the HD collection and there are issues with it. Some parts have lagg and things like the oxygen bar wont go away fully but im sure there is a video on youtube explaining the problems.

I actually never played this series growing up, I played mainly Crash (obviously). When I played these, I played them via the ps3 trilogy disc and I had no technical issues that I can remember. Maybe it's an NTSC issue since I'm in Europe. Great series though, I wish Jak and Daxter had the same treatment and longevity as this series.
The sad thing is, these issues are common with ports like these, since they're done with such low budgets.

besides, strafing made the game a lot easier. all you had to do is press two buttons and its a promis win... the first game was the 2nd most hard in the trilogy just because it had no strafe! the third one was the hardest because the enemies just did so much damage and seriously there were a lot more enemies in the third game, but i think strafing made the game a LOT more easy, to the point it was kinda boring...
the thing i love the most about the first game was the automatic camera. you could just relax with your thumb on the shapes without having to control your camera all the time. GENIUS!
Indeed. I say Going Commando is the hardest, mainly because of there being more puzzles and you don't really get any allies in the game that help during battle.

The third game is also linear which bugged the hell out of me when I was a kid
the lack of strafing is justified because most enemies die in one hit, those that dont are not too difficult to kill and are spread out far enough to not be too hard or easy. if you played spyro on ps1, you will feel right at home with the controls of this game and be good at it. my favorite one is this one for its gameplay. the strafing took away the challenge in future rc games. best story in the series in my opinion
IF Ratchet 1 was the hardest ratchet 2 is going to be a breeze.

I never noticed the vendor beeing squashed, and i have played the original Version, but as i said it could be because of the fact that European Televisions are sligthly different than american ones.
If you just get one character from each of the 8 elements you're basically set and since the game comes with 3 characters you only have to buy 5 figures.
cant believe you never use the suck cannon. one of the best weapons in my opinion.
Well actually, the Suck Cannon is really useful, last time I replayed the game, it was one of the most used weapons for me, also, to get the RYNO, you only really need to play through Challenge Mode once.

This game series has probably my favorite soundtrack ever like it combines so many great genres of music you got traditional orchestral elements but that is just the top of the barrel there are so many great music genres like rock techno acid break beat jungle hip-hop ambient industrial trip hop drum and bass drum and bass and of course all sorts of quirky psychedelic samples and instruments straight out of idm love it

I must suck at this game or something because I had so much trouble with the last boss that I thought I had to get the Rhyno to beat him so I farmed bolts in an early level for a few hours. Even then I barely beat him . . .

when you hear how insomniac actually went about making ratchet and clank(the series) on ps2, it's very easy to see how it would be hard to make that into a collection running on the ps3. You should look into a channel called uselesspodcast. It's run my ex-insomniac employees who helped make ratchet and clank on the ps2, and they lets play ratchet 2 and 3. In one of their videos they talk about why it was probably a nightmare to make the games into a collection on the ps3.

Ratchet and clank only 7 hours? Yeah right. My first playthrough as a kid took like 24 hours. Nowadays if i go back to play, its 10 hours without skipping cutscenes. Maybe 9 if I skip cutscenes... you must be only doing the bare minimum.
Also I made it through the game with just the bomb glove, and suck cannon, blaster, and devastator. Bomb and suck cannon are free and are borderline overpowered.
Visibomb needed if you want all the gold bolts.

Ultimate Gamer I've played a few honestly. The first one (of course), all four one, a crack in time (my favorite), into the nexus and I'm currently trying to get the latest one. That angry Bird movie does look funny as fuck though.
Now I really want to play some of the games but I don't have any of the consoles compatible with them. The Angry Birds movie does look hilarious and I don't think those 2 movies will be bad because video games movies tend to be bad. If I'm not mistaken, I think those 2 are the first animated video game movies.

But yeah, I actually went to go see the r&c movie a week ago and it was really good. I was a little too hype at the movies and had complaints filed about me and my friend but yeah, lmao. lol what are you talkiing about? it took me about idk,,,, 3 days of gameplay to get the ryno. i didnt even finish the game before getting it. it was relatively hard, and sure i had to go back and forth from blackwater city to w/e planet else that gave good amount of blots per run, but it was doable. heck, i think i ruined my last boss battle because of this weapon, i didnt know that 4 hits would kill it, and it wasn't fun at all... it was the first game i beat on the ps2 so it was fun, but it could have been more fun without the ryno i guess...

I don't know who told you they botched the collection but it is fantastic. I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find added glitches maybe but I have beaten each game on the collection several times and at no point did I find any memorable problems (meaning if I did find a glitch then it must have been so minor that I can't even remember it).
The only thing I can really think of that they messed up is some of the visuals in Going Commando, like the health bar. I honestly think the collection makes Going Commando look the worst visually, and it kinda makes me regret giving away my original copy.
jackbrokeheart Ratchet's helmet is always way too big for his head in my copy (in both GC and UYA), but they do at least play pretty well for the most part.
