Agreed, though thankfully I think Ratchet & Clank 2 & 3 do a great job in finding that middle ground of making him an endearing protagonist and partner to Clank.
One thing that makes RC1 stand out compared to the later entries is the more "grungy" aesthetic overall. Things like the HUD having a CRT look, the weapons looking very strung together with bolts and screws (that is to say, they don't look very over the top). It's a unique look that didn't really carry over in the future.

Ratchet & Clank becoming only the third console platformer franchise (Mario, Sonic, Ratchet & Clank) to actually sustain itself across three or more consecutive console generations? No one would have thought that in the PS2 days. Crash DIED across his next two generations of output. Spyro went on ice after his second generation of output. Jak was a one generation and done (because Naughty Dog had a habit of that). Sly died after his second generation. Blinx couldn't even last past a single console. And that's also forgetting all the flop or bomb platformers that only got one instalment on the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation.
About Ratchet's behavior in the first game: Being a loner hyper-fixated on your only interest in a world that doesn't give a shit about you beyond how much money is in your pocket is bound to leave you an angry bastard.
I remember just telling my grandma to get me whatever for my birthday back in 2004. She got me Finding Nemo, Pac-Man World 2 and this game. I have loved Ratchet and Clank ever since.
Ratchet 1 will always be special to me. Its rougher edges in combat and its Metroidvania-lite structure actually make it pretty refreshing to go back to every now and then compared to some of the later games which while good, can get just a little too samey when played back to back.
This game right here is the reason that I play video games today. Some of the most cherished memories I have of are playing Ratchet and Clank with my father and older sister. I somehow ended up being the first in the family to beat it at just 4 years old, and I've replayed it dozens if not a hundred times since. I love everything about it, it's still my favorite game ever made.
Woot, you beat the Blackwater City water level ("time attack") at the age of 4? That section was so stressful for me, and I played it aged 8, back then :D
@@Metalton95 Don't get me wrong, I got stuck on parts like that a lot, and I'm pretty sure I did have to ask my dad for help from time to time. But yeah, the first time I ever beat Drek was when I was about 4.
@@Stevengubler damn! After recently ‘re-discovering’ R&C since December, primarily through Golden Bolt’s videos, I was kinda shocked to see how ‘flawless’ you had to be for that section, and was kinda impressed with my past self for that performance. Imagining a 4 year old nailing that almost makes me dizzy, haha! I only started my first video games at that age (Toy Story 2 & Tarzan), and since I was always stuck on level 1, my parents remember the soundtrack to this day 😂
"The alien snappers and crabs" Ah yes; those guys are the toughest non-vehicle regular enemies. Most enemies take 1~3 wrench hits [with Hyper-Strikes counting as 2]. The snappers take 4. The crabs take 5. And both retaliate when hit too. Even the endgame enemies have 3HP. And the former are in what is basically level and not even the 1/3 mark while the crabs are before the 2/3 mark. Also; the paywalls are part of the game's theme, which is satirsation of corporate/capitalist culture. There's a reason why the "hero" is a sellout and the main villain is capitalism extreme.
It’s true though thankfully by the third game it’s mostly about the characters more than anything. Though seeing Johnny refer to the mad scientist archetype… I wonder how that comments going to age.
Agreed with the enemy health the scaling is well done to just an annoyance/pull hair out levels even when from a distance/going with crowd control weapons sometimes and the 'ignore the wrench' strategy with it being for boxes to save ammo. Besides being a leftover of Moneybags from Spyro having gem paywalls but yes it fits the theme well. I am glad they removed them but 2&3 made them not as bad as 1 so eh they aren't as missed even besides the theming.
14:05 Ironic that comparison was made because Iizuka was definitely inspired by Jak II and this game's sequel Going Commando when starting production on Shadow the Hedgehog
One of the things I’ve learned to love about this game is how it attacks the Hero’s First Journey story. Instead of adventure and wonderment, you’re met with greedy and manipulative people who wring you for cash and force you to do their dirty work. The hero you’ve spent the first half of the game idolizing ends up being like everyone else. Ratchet quickly understands this and just journeys for his own selfish enjoyment and desires. While Clank, the robot has that naive desire to do good.
Actually with Shadow they took alot inspiration even from Jak 2, Sonic Team saw the difference style from Jak 1 and 2 and thought they could did the same, the only difference tho between Jak and Ratchet games is the fact Shadow is not fun or polished
Just a heads up for anyone looking to get into this series: while the HD Collection is the best way to get the first three games legally it has a few glitches not present in the original PS2 games. None of it is game breaking, and if you have no nostalgia for the originals you may not notice some of them, but it is there. Personally I'd recommend either following Johnny's example and playing them on an actual PS2 or barring that an emulator. Also don't bother playing the HD port of Ratchet: Deadlock. That one is so borked it's borderline unplayable.
I played through Deadlocked HD multiple times and never encountered any game breaking bugs, but I've played through UYA 3 times in HD and each time encountered a different game breaking bug towards the end of my playthrough forcing me to restart
@@Obe_omer The PS2 trilogy notoriously is very janky with frame rate and textures when emulated. It has to do with how PS2 games were coded specifically for a PS2 console. When you run them with a different machines, you tend to run into issues.
Ah man. This has me hyped. My dad bought us a PS2 back in 2002 for Christmas and it came with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Jak & Daxter and this. Ratchet and Clank was by far the game I played the most. Recently replayed it and the game has held up great. It suffers from some early installment weirdness, but pretty much every single gripe will get fixed with later games in the series. Never knew Insomniac and Naughty Dog shared a building. Makes so much sense with how much these games share. When you beat the game and decide to restart it in challenge mode the game doubles your bolt income. The RYNO was originally intended to be a game breaker that you got after your first play through. 7 year old me grinded bolts for it though. Took forever, but it was hilarious when it wiped out the screen like nobody's business. Also got stuck on Blackwater city's water section (the path to get to Qwark's trailer). That was my water temple. Caused a dislike of water levels that lasts to this day.
haha yeah I was only born in 2002 but I still have fond memories of hating the everloving **** out of that sewer level. I also got stuck on Oltanis Orbit - Gemlik Base because I didn't realise you needed to blow up those towers with a rocket launcher... mainly because I couldn't read back then.
@@Kaiwala I got stuck in a million different places in those games as well. Mostly because of not being able to understand English. Learned English through sheer stubbornness and beating every PS2 game in the series about 5 times.
Yeah, Ratchet and Clank is sorta the gaming equal to Futurama where there are little to no bad entries, but even the weak/low points tend to be better then other series' weak/low points. Like my biggest grip with some weaker games is that some of them feel like they're too short. and that's usually the worst I can say about some of them.
It the franchise insomniac never really moved on from even with the Spiderman games. Where as Naughty dog moved away from Jak and go on to make the uncharted series and the last of us then ruined it forever with part 2. And, Sucker punch would make ghost of Tsushima
14:15 That sentence is one I've been telling myself whenever I check out some older games I've missed out on when I was a kid, though I missed out on those games because my family couldn't afford the games at the time.
Ooh! Thank you for looking at this series! it's one of my absolute favorites! 2, 3, Deadlocked, and A Crack in Time are my favorite games in the series. As something interesting, there is a developer commentary let's play series here on youtube by UselessPodcasts where one of the level designers and one of the programmers play through games 2, 3, and 1 together and talk about the development process and some of the psychology and logic behind different design decisions for those games. They also talk a bit about their relationship with Naughty Dog. The discussion that left the greatest impression on me was when they talked about the company's "90 degree turn" rule (discussed during 2) and "genre switching" rule (discussed during 3), which I really appreciated once I started noticing them in other games. Obviously no game is perfect, but I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
the first Ratchet & Clank is a game I changed my mind on the most. I didn't grow up with these games, and only got into them a few years ago; I started with the furure series, and after finishing that I went back to the PS2 games. I absolutely hated it. It felt clunky, unfair, and my first impression was that in terms of gameplay R&C 1 was way worse than any of the future games. Here is the thing though: Now, a few years later and having replayed 1, it's actually one of my favorites. You cannot play R&C 1 like the future games. If you try to play it the same way, as a simple run & gun shooter, you will get absolutely demolished. R&C 1 is more like an adventure/platforming game with shooting elements. Its easy to run out of ammo and bolts in this game, you do have to use melee a lot of times, and the enemies constantly pose a threat. If you run into rooms guns blazing, you will die immediately. The absence of a strafe button is what drove me mad at first, cause I played the future series first... but here is the thing, I actually think that that is one of the games biggest features. Introducing strafing made this series way easier, and it also made a lot of the weapons feel... exactly the same. Why? Because almost all weapons in future games let you strafe left & right while jumping up and down to avoid damage while effectively fighting the enemies. Basically, you hold down the shoot button while strafing and you win. I am exaggerating a bit, but anybody who has played R&C 1 and then the future games knows what im talking about. If you tackle R&C 1 the right way, it is actually really fun to play. Strategize, don't run in guns blazing, save the right ammo for the right situation, and so on. The combat ends up being really fun and challenging if you don't expect it to be exactly like the sequels. Besides the gameplay I will just say that R&C 1 has BY FAR the best OST of the entire series, it gets you freaking PUMPED (only R&C 2 comes close), the banter and back and forth between Ratchet & Clank is entertaining as hell, and the story is a rather on the nose critique of capitalism, but done well. Visually, for a PS2 game, and the first entry into this series, it looks stunning, and the level design is great. There are many planets, branching paths, and quite a lot of variety. I really don't have much complaints about this game, it comes rather close to being perfect. Tl;dr: This game is a classic, dont let the absence of strafing discourage you and give it a fair chance.
1:57 Oh those commercials, the nostalgia. Despite being a Nintendo kid for most of my childhood, Ratchet and Jax were my main PlayStation games to play when my brother wasn't using his PS2.
As a kid with the PS2, I was a massive fan of Sly Cooper. I didn't get to Ratchet until my teen years, but I really do love this series. Never touched Jak though. No real reason, it's just the one that got away from me. I gotta give that one a try.
this was my first ratchet & clank game and to see you not only look at this game and the other games to follow it’s something special, especially since the series is turning 20 years old this year
Fun fact: The final boss theme against Chairman Drek is bugged and won't play unless you stand in a very specific spot before triggering a transitional cutscene. No idea how that slipped past QA and apparently, I should've kept my expectations low for Idol Minds to fix any of the original bugs for the HD "Remaster", but that's the way it goes, I guess.
I'm so excited to see your thoughts on the rest of the PS2 games! Also, if you enter the Blackwater City hoverboard race with the Hologuise, it just cancels the race and you get to walk around normally. I taped my controllers back in the day and used the taunter to get the RYNO as well and I think that's a part of wanting to see the pure destruction that comes with a gun called "rip ya a new one".
aahh this review fills me with so much joy, esp since u enjoyed this game overall. you'll definitely love the games coming up and youre doing one of my 2 favorites from the PS2 era next and i am so looking forward to it.

Hey Johnny! So glad your having a look at this now. Your videos were like my comfort food in 2020, between work and selfisolation and I'm a big R&C fan since I was 4. Can't wait to see where you go with your takes. 😁
I think the reason why the game had MANY points of items being "blocked" by a "paywall" was the fact that, at the heart of it all, is CAPITALISM and how it affected EVERYONE
Really happy to see you enjoy the first game Johnny. I’ve got a funny feeling your going to love the second and third. I get what you mean about the lack of an auto lock-on when it comes to the first game, it’s a bit of an odd omission given the games focus on combat but I think it only really gets better from here.
Oh, nice! Was waiting for this! R&C 2 was the first game I played when I got my ps2 in 2005 (technically, it was the demo), but I wouldn't actually play any of the games until last year, and now this is one of my favorite series!
YES! Finally a Johnny Marathon on one of my all time favorite game franchises! I religiously played every R&C installment every time they were published and there were two instances where I picked the newest PlayStation system JUST to play its exclusive R&C game.
To this day, this is one of the few games that really blends platforming and shooting mechanics. Even the ps2 sequels de-emphasise platforming. With battles mostly being in very flat areas. Mostly arenas. Even the remake of this game went all in on shooting and not really on platforming. Kinda wished the more recent game had more platforming elements, or at least more interesting platforming
A PS2 series going from being a mix of platforming and action to the sequel having more action with flat arena level design? I feel like I've heard of that somewhere before. My chain of memories is a little bit hazy, though.
@@toonzach2870 probably the gamingbrit. But he's right. Wasn't just paraphrasing what he said without playing them. I do agree after playing all of them
the most recent game kinda reintroduced the platforming with the rift mechanic and that unlike every other game the majority of enemy's are faster than ratchet making you actually reposition rather than just back away slowly
I mean platforming in the series for the longest was to mainly just break up the action more than be an actual focus. The real selling point of these games has always been the diverse and unique weapons, cool and fun gadgets, varied and memorable worlds to explore and the general art direction/characters.
One thing I love about the original R&C is Drek keeps gaining titles he goes from“chairman drek” to “executive chairman drek ” to something like “supreme emperor chairman drek” it’s small and stupid but I love it

It's my personal favorite video game franchises, and let me tell you, things only get better from here. The second game is one of the best sequels out there imo. Can't wait to see you review it :)
Finally! I've been looking foward to this all day! Just a casual Ratchet and Clank fan, mostly of just the first two games, so been really glad to see you finally tackle these and find enjoyment from your fresh perspective. Ratchet and Clank 1 is such a unique and solid game, with a presentation and design that I think all the sequels kinda lost. It's become one of my favorite games on the Playstation period, and just a great comfort game I can pick up and 100 percent anytime.
Omg I’ve waited YEEEEEEAAAAAARRRRSSS for a marathon on the ratchet and clank games and this is just the start :D Btw can’t wait to see you look at 3 and deadlocked those 2 are my personal favorites of the ps2 games
Oh man I was a Ratchet & Clank fanatic especially when I found out Clank is voiced by David Kaye who voices Sesshomaru in Inuyasha (my all time favorite anime) Up your arsenal I remember the most fondly. Great video! Much nostalgia!
Ironically, I played the heck out of the Spyro trilogy (except for Year Of The Dragon), and skipped over the Ratchet & Clank games, mostly because we didn't get a PlayStation 2 until roughly around mid-late 2005, and even then, we just skipped over it. I did eventually got to try a Ratchet & Clank game since one of my cousins had a copy of the third game, and, while it was fun, I had absolutely no idea where to go back then. But now, years later, I have complete experience of the original PlayStation 2 trilogy (I've yet to play Deadlocked), and the first Ratchet & Clank, while rough around the edges, is still a good time, while also showcasing just what the PlayStation 2 was capable of, and it only got better from there.
13:52 i mean, you're not entirely wrong. apparently the sequel was more or less approved 5 months BEFORE release thanks to positive feedback from playtesters.
This series to me is like crash to most people. When I was 5 my family got a ps2 and ratchet 2 came with it. It was the first game I ever played and I played the series so. Much. I even own most every game except those weird mobile only games tht were like for Nokia or something. I love the series so much
I really, Really, REALLY can't wait for this man to cover "A Crack in Time". I easy played that game 10 times over when i was a Kid, and I played it 10 times again when i found a copy at a store near my home town. And If Johnny ever sees this comment, I would highly recommend to complete this game, or at least to a certain extent. You'll be heavily rewarded for it.
Some people think A Crack in Time is overrated, and despite the short 8 month development period, alongside Rift Apart in many ways feeling like "what if we had more time to do that game again without cutting corners?", I still stand by that Crack in Time is one of the best entries in R&C. The finale absolutely slaps.
Well, all I can say is if you enjoyed this game, you're in for one hell of a ride, because many of the sequels make substantial improvements, in ways that end up becoming important series staples. The next game is probably the best example of such.
Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the later titles, the quality-of-life improvements they made with the sequels really adds a whole lot to the games in the long run. Also, been wanting to ask about your setup at 22:03, I've been wanting to know what you use in particular for capturing PS2 footage? I really like the quality and am curious to know what you're using there. (Outside of the Elgato, since I could easily recognize one of those.)
There's actually an interesting theory revolving around the plumber guy. That gut has appeared in most if not all the games and seems oddly aware of future events. In the remake for the movie he even says 'See ya in the next remake' as he made his exit
I legitimately never thought I'd see the day. Been following you since your first Mario marathon in 2011 and always wondered what your thoughts on the Lombax and Lunchbox would be. You're gonna fucking love Going Commando, dude.
This game really is the one of the two in the franchise that emphasises using all of the weapons. All weapons has its own use. Even the taunter. The other one being ratchet gladiator
Yeah, Deadlocked/Gladiator went about the weapon system the best imo, instead of giving you 25 guns and you never using most of them because only about half of are consistently useful or redundant, make 10 weapons that are all awesome and have utility and give you the option to mod them, disappointed that the series didn't keep in that direction, though ACiT tried something interesting with the constructo weapons, it still didn't hit the mark for me.
@@kingdomkey2262 and it also does elemental damage very interesting. Instead it being a tied to a weapon that you don't use, it's something you put on a weapon you do
Why do you capitalize all of your words? This is a genuine question; I'm not trying to be rude. I've seen some other people do that before and I'm just curious.
Hell yeah Johnny finally going to do a review on Ratchet and Clank hopefully he'll eventually get to Jak and Daxter cause I want to see what's his opinion on that franchise.
Super SUPER glad you mentoined the checkpoint issues with this game, that always made me rage first time playing it. Meanwhile other reviewers (As well as some lets playesr) I have seen so far never seem to mention the checkpoint issue at all, making me think I just suck or something and that no other gamer found this to be a problem, but I''m glad you bought it up to let me know I wasn't the only one who didn't like how far strict the checkpoints were XD
I'm really happy to see Johnny is finally get around to covering the Ratchet & Clank series. My personal experience is unfortunately limited to only the original four PS2 games and the sorta remake of the first game on the PS4 (since I never had a PS3 to play the Future arc games), but even with my not having played all of the mainline games, Ratchet & Clank is still genuinely one of my favorite game series I've ever played.
My first exposure on the series was a demo version of the first game and I was hooked in the series, I thought Ratchet & Clank was a great game, held back by the personalisation of some of the characters and the gameplay being a little too run of the mill despite the more creative gameplay, but it was a great start to the series like with Crash Bandicoot. Also Johnny, you're not alone with your opinion on Ratchet's arrogant hotheaded personality, I felt Ratchet had been improved in the sequels and at least he cares about the wellbeing of the galaxies that he and Clank are tasked to save. As for Qwark, he acts like a manchild so bad and he doesn't do his job properly at being a superhero.
Thank you for this John, I always loved Ratchet and a review about a game taking place in a world of cynical assholes wallowing in a sea of consumerism and unchecked capitalism is all I need to get away from the real wo- Oh wait...

R&C2 is one of my favorite sequels out there, as it fixes sooo many of the issues with the first game (which was already really fun), on top of adding so much more to the gameplay. And thankfully, almost all of the games are worth checking out, as most of them are super fun imo. Hope you enjoy the sequels!
Going Commando is by far one the best "sequels" ever made. It improves on almost everything the 1st game setup, besides maybe the aesthetic and a lack of a central plot by the 2nd half of the game.

I only started my first video games at that age (Toy Story 2 & Tarzan), and since I was always stuck on level 1, my parents remember the soundtrack to this day 😂
Yes! Same here these were the first games i played.
I love how Johnny sneaked in that "Headless Sly" moment from the SGB playthrough at 2:38, it was one of the most memorable parts of that LP.
The wonders of live let's plays
"And that was Clockla's true revenge. To decapitate my buddy, Sly."
The amount of "Raycons" John must have is about more or the same amount copies of Sonic 1 he has
Was just thinking the same! Probably needs to build more storage soon.
Does the version you can get of Sonic 1 in the console version of Sonic Generations count too?
14:05 Ironic that comparison was made because Iizuka was definitely inspired by Jak II and this game's sequel Going Commando when starting production on Shadow the Hedgehog
Never thought Johnny would get to this series. Grew up playing the first 3 on PS2 over and over again. Especially the first one.
I look forward to how pump he be with all the new features of going Commando he love it
Is it just me?? Or is Johnny’s voice is so chill and soothing that you can use it like ASMR videos 😂😂😂
I love the fact that all of your issues with this game are fixed in the sequels. You're going to love this series.
Like I said last time, I'm so glad you're looking at this series, and I'm glad you had fun with this one, because it only gets better!
I never thought to compare this game to Shadow the Hedgehog but now that I think of it there really are a lot of parallels between the two
Actually with Shadow they took alot inspiration even from Jak 2, Sonic Team saw the difference style from Jak 1 and 2 and thought they could did the same, the only difference tho between Jak and Ratchet games is the fact Shadow is not fun or polished
Damn
20 years later, this series is still going! I'm excited for this.
The day has finally come, I’ve been waiting for Johnny to tackle this series for YEARS now. Where’s my popcorn?? :D
BEGONE BOT
Now we just need Jak & Daxter and I can die happy.
I'm legit surprised Johnny took literally an eternity to finally cover the R&C games given their popularity.
I guess I need to try the ps2 version. Its been years but I got the platinum on deadlocked hd I remember loving it at the time when it released
It's true, and is a real shame! I wish the HD Collection was just a little better put together.
I tried playing it on the ps2 emulator and it's so hard to emulate with amount of details that this game has.
The time has come!
It brings a huge smile on my face to see Johnny FINALLY tackle Ratchet & Clank!
Easily one of my all time favorite series period.
When I heard John was taking a look at this series I decided to go back and finish the second game, playing the third game rn
For me Ratchet and Clank is one of the most consistently great franchises. Even the lesser games are good.
Except for the Ps4 game
Or the newest
@@KokkoroKai Rift Apart’s cool
Ah, one of my favourite franchises! About time you got to look at this after promising it so long ago.
I was so addicted to this game and have been pleased with how solid the franchise has been, imo. 😊
Speaking of Crash. Funny how Kevin Michael Richardson was also Crunch's original VA.
the first Ratchet & Clank is a game I changed my mind on the most.
18:00 did Johnny really say "Suck cannon" without using the "SUCK!!!" bit from Spaceballs?
Now that’s a goddamn classic if I’ve ever seen one
i have waited for this for ten years lets fucking go
Love to see a Johnny reviews on one of my favorite videogame franchises. Very excited for the upcoming reviews ahead.
I gotta give that one a try.
this was my first ratchet & clank game and to see you not only look at this game and the other games to follow
it’s something special, especially since the series is turning 20 years old this year
YES!
You are in for a fun ride comrade! Have fun with this series!
Silly commenter, the boss music isn't bugged, it's just a callback to Spyro Year of the Dragon!
So glad I found this channel! Super cozy vids to watch for nostalgia 😊
aahh this review fills me with so much joy, esp since u enjoyed this game overall. you'll definitely love the games coming up and youre doing one of my 2 favorites from the PS2 era next and i am so looking forward to it.
4:18 Who would've guessed this bit of Johnny dancing in front of Spyro's burning corpse would also be his cameo contribution in Caddy's Million Sub Spyro video?
Johnny if you see this I’ve been a huge fan of yours for many years now and wanted to say thank you because you’re videos helped me get through my depression and can’t say thank you enough
Huh... The "Ratchet doesn't do much ratcheting" revelation is something I never considered. And I like how he made the Shadow the Hedgehog comparison right out of the gate! Plus, learning about the endless bolts glitch from the get-go...? How...!?
Ratchet does more mechanic Stuff in later games but it is something that first game barely does anything with
At last my favorite series is finally getting a VS series can't wait to see more
Gotta say, you've been looking great these last few vids, man!
Hey Johnny! So glad your having a look at this now. Your videos were like my comfort food in 2020, between work and selfisolation and I'm a big R&C fan since I was 4. Can't wait to see where you go with your takes. 😁
As people already know, Clank is voiced by David Kaye of Beast Wars Megatron star, OOOHHH YYEESS!!
I think the reason why the game had MANY points of items being "blocked" by a "paywall" was the fact that, at the heart of it all, is CAPITALISM and how it affected EVERYONE
I can see it. There's a few games with underlying messages like that, Sonic having one for environmentalism for example.
Ratchet voiced by someone other than James Arnold Taylor always trips me up because ingot so used to his voice
Really happy to see you enjoy the first game Johnny. I’ve got a funny feeling your going to love the second and third. I get what you mean about the lack of an auto lock-on when it comes to the first game, it’s a bit of an odd omission given the games focus on combat but I think it only really gets better from here.
Woot our man Johnny is finally covering the Ratchet and Clank series, LET'S GO!!!
Oh, nice! Was waiting for this! R&C 2 was the first game I played when I got my ps2 in 2005 (technically, it was the demo), but I wouldn't actually play any of the games until last year, and now this is one of my favorite series!
I got R&C 2 as a gift some 15 years back. Needless to say it quickly took up a lot of my time.
It felt weird going back to the first game's mechanics.
2:38. Oh god, Sly losing his head has to be one of the most memorable SGB moments. XD
YESS LETS GOOOO so excited he's finally gonna look at this series, second favorite only to Sonic for me
after playing the ps4 remake i really felt like i missed out on playing the original versions back then. these are really good games.
Bless you bud it’s never too late, assuming Sony get their heads out their asses an out it on their new fly by night premium service.
Just what I needed, can't wait to watch this tonight.
YES! Finally a Johnny Marathon on one of my all time favorite game franchises! I religiously played every R&C installment every time they were published and there were two instances where I picked the newest PlayStation system JUST to play its exclusive R&C game.
Johnny mentioning Black Lagoon put a smile on my face. Good taste in anime my man.
BL is so awesome, and the manga is still ongoing which is just so good, next volume of it drops in August
So happy you're gonna be looking at my favorite gaming franchise of all time, hope you have fun!
@@theirishviking9278 Also the phantom dash is good for both combat encounters and general traversal.
One thing I love about the original R&C is Drek keeps gaining titles he goes from“chairman drek” to “executive chairman drek ” to something like “supreme emperor chairman drek” it’s small and stupid but I love it
"This game STARVES you for checkpoints"
Might want to get used to that.
*Laughs in Jak 2*
@@leithaziz2716 Jak 2 is pretty generous with checkpoint if the mission is platforming focused but if the mission involved shooting yeah pray that you made it to the end
Man! That was fast. The previous video felt like it came out yesterday. Glad to see you finally giving your opinions on this series!
Just in case you were wondering: Yes, the game titles are innuendos on purpose.
I love how to clip you used of Sly Cooper was the infamous beheading glitch from Sly 2. One that I haven't seen anywhere else but with you guys and it's hilarious
I'm so happy you're finally talking about these games. Been a fan of yours since like 2013 and I have always wanted to see you review these games.
Omg I’ve waited YEEEEEEAAAAAARRRRSSS for a marathon on the ratchet and clank games and this is just the start :D
Btw can’t wait to see you look at 3 and deadlocked those 2 are my personal favorites of the ps2 games
Oh man I was a Ratchet & Clank fanatic especially when I found out Clank is voiced by David Kaye who voices Sesshomaru in Inuyasha (my all time favorite anime)
Up your arsenal I remember the most fondly.
Great video! Much nostalgia!
Is this "Yessss" Megatron David Kaye? Neat.
I love the series so much
Ratchet & Clank was one of the first games I got for the PS2 back when my brothers & I got the console. I hope you'll enjoy the series, Johnny!
A Crack in Time is in my opinion, the best game in the series
Some people think A Crack in Time is overrated, and despite the short 8 month development period, alongside Rift Apart in many ways feeling like "what if we had more time to do that game again without cutting corners?", I still stand by that Crack in Time is one of the best entries in R&C. The finale absolutely slaps.
Audibly gasped when I saw this pop up. Johnny's finally doing my favourite video game series ever!
No mention of the great music?
Unforgivable omission
Instead it being a tied to a weapon that you don't use, it's something you put on a weapon you do
It’s Crazy Because The Only Ratchet & Clank Game I Ever Played & Beaten Was The One On PS5 But Now I Feel Like Going Back And Playing All The Classics
Rift Apart is awesome. Welcome Aboard.
@@leithaziz2716 Thank You Im Happy To Be Apart Of The Ride
Why do you capitalize all of your words? This is a genuine question; I'm not trying to be rude. I've seen some other people do that before and I'm just curious.

So incredibly hyped for you to tackle the big three PS2 platformers! These games shaped so much of my childhood. It's finally time
Hell yeah Johnny finally going to do a review on Ratchet and Clank hopefully he'll eventually get to Jak and Daxter cause I want to see what's his opinion on that franchise.
Super SUPER glad you mentoined the checkpoint issues with this game, that always made me rage first time playing it.
Meanwhile other reviewers (As well as some lets playesr) I have seen so far never seem to mention the checkpoint issue at all, making me think I just suck or something and that no other gamer found this to be a problem, but I''m glad you bought it up to let me know I wasn't the only one who didn't like how far strict the checkpoints were XD
im so happy you're finally covering the ratchet and clank series
I'm really happy to see Johnny is finally get around to covering the Ratchet & Clank series. My personal experience is unfortunately limited to only the original four PS2 games and the sorta remake of the first game on the PS4 (since I never had a PS3 to play the Future arc games), but even with my not having played all of the mainline games, Ratchet & Clank is still genuinely one of my favorite game series I've ever played.
Never had a PS3 lol 😂 got water or electricity yet ?
Best part of this video is the confirmation that Johnny watches Black Lagoon, also known as peak fiction.
6:48
Considering the Jak and Daxter Cameos we got in Rift apart, I'm going to say yes.
Thank you for this John, I always loved Ratchet and a review about a game taking place in a world of cynical assholes wallowing in a sea of consumerism and unchecked capitalism is all I need to get away from the real wo- Oh wait...
My 2nd favorite franchise just behind God Of War.
Going Commando is my favorite of the entire series and I've played every game.
I recently started playing this game for the first time and this game is fantastic. I should play the sequels after I finish this game.
You absolutely should.
@@leithaziz2716 Yep. It's honestly amazing how good of a sequel it is, considering it was kinda rushed (which explains some of the game's shortcomings). Still a fantastic sequel.
That slight Spyro shade did hurt me a bit, but I’m still excited to hear more from you about Ratchet & Clank. Maybe next year.
I was just about to take a shower, but this just dropped, and I'm subsequently dropping everything.
