My mother was very close to Del Shannon (not his real name). My mom passed in 1988. Del Shannon committed suicide a few years later...he was troubled by divorce, etc. I'm glad my mom wasn't alive to know this happened, though he loved her as a friend so dearly, perhaps it might never have happened had she lived. I have a rare tape of him singing a song he wrote & sang at here memorial. Before he sang, he said, "This is for Sweet Betty." I treasure it!

Thank you so much for providing that part of Del’s life especially at that time. I was overwhelmed to hear of his death and it sounded so incongruous with what I considered his amazing achievements - unforgettable songs. I’m sure people my age (77) and many younger are still enamored with Runaway and several other of his songs.

His real name was Charles Westover and that was his name when he started performing at the HI-LO Club in Battle Creek, Mich. There was a kid that would drop in at times to shoot the breeze with the musicians. On a certain occasion he told the guys in the band he was going to be a wrestler. He was going to call himself Mark Shannon and Charles thought to himself, "Shannon what a wonderful name". Just that Charles wasn't going to call himself Mark. Charles saw that his boss drove a Coupe Deville Cadillac and that's where Del came from. That's how the legend was born and the rest is history.

My heart really gets strucked, especially each time, when i hear Del Shannon yelling out the haunting notes of the last few bars of the song, as the image in this video slowly fades away, while seeing his handsome poster in the background. What a shame. It's so sad...a big tragic! end in the history of a Rockabilly Legend! ❤❤

Del had one of the most distinctive voices of the time. Throw in a Hammond organ with his voice and it haunted the airwaves. Great moody stuff.

  • @milliondollarredhead

It's touching that he trusted my mom, but she kept it pretty much to herself. Celebrities didn't impress her; Del was a loving friend to her; he could've been a janitor or president for all she cared - LOL. She understood alcoholics & that's how she met "Charles." My dad is 33 yrs sober. She was in Al-Anon. The song he sang was "One Day at A Time." He sat on a stool with his guitar & said,"Betty used to tell me, Charles, you must get on with your life...this is for Sweet Betty." Thnx NMAR!

Was 13 when I heard this. I never forgot the phrase "follow the sun" and the way he sung that part. Something about it has lived with me all these years and haunted my memory until now at 68. It still does. Something unnerving and chilling about that song and that phrase. It still stays with me.

Del Shannon was in fact the chosen one to replace Roy Orbison in The Travellin' Wilburys but unfortunately ... Shannon shot himself with a shotgun in his own car.

Del told me he wrote "Keep Searchin'" during one of his bouts with a bottle, adding, "and it wasn't milk." His entire career was spent under a cloud created by his managers, who signed him to a deal in which THEY got 100% of the rights and royalties from his music FOR LIFE. All Del earned was a SHARE of his live performance fee. Now you undertand the reason for his depression, drinking and eventual suicide -- even though he did manage to finally buy back those rights just before his death.

A great song and example of Del Shannon's falsetto and the way he uses it in the song, in just the right amounts, building to what sounds like an out of this world big long high note at the end, I think about an A5, high soprano territory!, what a voice!

Del Shannon and his music and particularly the song did a great deal to keep me in music. I was 15 years old in 1965 and at that time the song just simply rocked. Of course it's going to sound dated to some, but if you don't like the old music don't listen to it and don't mark itt as disliked. This music is too good for that

He was the first one to combine vocals into the emerging surf sounds that were all previous to his '61 hit Runaway, just instrumentals. I was gaga for his songs and sound. I lived near the Beach Boys before they hit and they would cover lots of Del Shannon in their gigs at the local Women's Club, YWCA and other spots we went to see them.

The very end of this song is incredible. Talk about vocal range. Frankie Valee and Lou Christie and Del would make quite a group.

He was actually one of the 1st American artists to cover a Beatles song. He did a great version of From me to You in 1963 a year prior to the Beatles arrival on these shores.
