I was unaware of that attack until i read your post. So I typed the name into Google, searched & had a read. The attack is shocking, disgusting & horrifying....
My husband and I are looking to move back down to Florida and get a boat. We lived there for a few years back in the early 2000s and loved boating. I used to get in the water when we would anchor but I told him I don’t think I will anymore.
The following require checking as I'm going off of memory from an article read years ago. I recall Therese was an experienced diver and was excited to take her first dive in a year or so after taking a break during her most recent pregnancy. Her husband was actually piloting the boat and watching their kids and not diving himself(?) Therese was actually diving with an experienced couple: one or more of whom were colleagues - marine biologists, conservationists, neither(?) They noticed she was falling behind and saw her taking long pauses during her descent. Because of this it was presumed she was having difficulties equalizing pressure. Because they were monitoring her progress to catch them up, they witnessed the attack. Cheers. I'll reiterate. Some of the above may be incorrect.
Great show Hal! I will not ever go into the ocean in Australia and definitely not close to where seals are. I just don't want to be fish food! Looking forward to seeing your next show soon 😁

Many people say, "I wouldn't go into the water if I lived in Australia" in fear of a shark attack. It's fully understandable and for the record (pay close attention to the wording) I'd like to THINK I wouldn't enter the water either. However........ I used to live in Spain, Costa del Sol = Mediterranean. At first I just STARTED tanning on the beach. But eventually, it becomes hard to stay out of the water when you're just sat there, staring at it and on a hot summer's afternoon. Before I knew it, I was in. The same thing happened AGAIN in Miami. I'm on the beach. Next thing I know, I'm swimming around in the water. Admittedly the risk of being attacked by a shark and in both locations is low. However & on both occasions, the risk of being attacked by a shark did cross my mind. It's worth mentioning, Spain, Tarifa, 1986, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, there was a GWS attack on a surfer. So even though the risk is low, one would be very naive to think that there's no way it wouldn't/couldn't happen. But the water is so alluring & you never think it's going to be you. That's the point I'm making. R.I.P the victim
Hey, Hal, I guess you heard that Susan Backlinie passed away at 77, a few days ago. Famous for playing Chrissie Watkins, the first victim in the opening scene of Jaws. It had also turned out to be a feeding attack in the movie but it was not quick, I believe it looked terrifying because the shark seemed to have some fun with the girl, shaking her “like a rag doll”, biting and then letting go for a while… I think that’s a common pattern in some attacks too, I couldn’t tell why sharks do it but it sure makes them look… demonic. Not “bite and wait”, it’s more like a sadistic game with the victim, perhaps just like cats play a little with mice before they eat them. Just a predatory thing? Who knows... The Cartwright attack, quick and ferocious and predatory too, surely resembles the attack on Shirley-Ann Durdin & the one on Simon Nellist, as you said. Perhaps Brazier, Vanda Pierri and L. Constanzo shared a similar fate: very large white sharks attacking quickly, all victims suffered horrific first bites severing legs from torso, I think. All of them fully consumed and nothing was left to recover.
I used to swim in the ocean any chance that I had, and I was insane.😂 I openly admit it. If I’d seen or heard about shark attacks like we do now, I’d have been so much more careful. I’ve only ever seen 1 shark when I was snorkeling with a friend, and she got so freaked out and pushed me into the reef where I got cut up and was bleeding. So I inadvertently chummed the sharks thanks to my idiotic friend. 😂 But now I’m staying in the pools and lakes (with no gators or sharks).
I just don't get it? They weren't tourist, neither novice scuba divers, they must've known (husband and wife) that number one: those are waters which great white sharks (tigers, bulls, etc.) inhabit, hell I'm an American living in Florida, thousands of miles away and I know that! Two: great white sharks predate upon seals and therefore it's not safe to frolic around them?! Many years have passed now, but it's tragic all the same, that family lost a wife and mom, and she, her life (in a horrible way, no less) and family, much too soon. RIP _Edited for typo._
Hal, you should read some of the stories in some of the old Sydney Herald and other Australian newspapers from the 20s, 30s, and 40s. I believe there are some shark attack mentionings in these that may or may not be in the files. Back then surfers used to do a collection for fisherman that caught big man-eaters (I mean they didn't know a blue shark that was swimming around after a fatal attack was probably attracted to the sounds, not the responsible shark, but to them back then....a blue shark was a man eater) and one guy that caught a nice sized tiger shark received a few hundred pounds for it. One year, 9 loyalty island natives armed with knives and marlin spears swam out into the water at Coogee to do battle with man eating sharks that were seen in the waters. 80,000 people were on the beaches that day to watch the men and sharks do battle.....but of course, when they swam out to the drum lines that were set for them, there were no sharks on the lines.
Jaws left a huge mark on many of us 70s/80s kids. I was petrified even when on the 'jaws ride' in florida 😂. I have no desire to even dip a toe in the ocean or a lake.
I've always agreed with you, Hal, regarding the "mistaken identity theory." Those sharks are intelligent and know the difference between pinniped and human. It's almost a guarantee that all Great Whites have encountered people, at some point in their development.
I was on holiday in western Oz and wanted to go over to a seal colony off the coast : I asked tourist information how I could get over there and they told me there weren’t any regular boats but I could swim because it wasn’t very far 😂😂😂 . When I said it was to see sharks they told me there not around here 😂😂
Tragic. Always an odds game when enjoying shark inhabited waters. I wish I had the gumption to enjoy the ocean beauty fully immersed in it. But I cant lol Hope her family found some peace.
So unbearable to witness such carnage. The poor kids must have nightmares every night. RIP Therese Cartwight. On a different note: Hal, did you see the video of those stupid kids on a boat dumping garbage into the ocean? I think this happened in Florida. I hope they get fined thousands of dollars and get jail time.
This happened to a guy in Mexico. Jumped in with a hooka I think and boom. If you're getting in the water, chill in the boat for a little bit. Slide in don't fall off the side like all these scuba guys do. You scare the fish you want to see and attract the tax collector. I will never forget seeing this guy bone white on the deck with one leg. Really crazy.
Great videos! Just 5 days earlier, John Ford, who was on his honeymoon, was killed in Byron Bay, north of Sydney. As the 16 to 18 foot shark approached, John pushed his wife Debbie out of the way and was bitten in the torso. Later, others hooked the shark which dragged the boat over a mile, before spitting out John's torso, facemask and part of his wetsuit. In an interview from 2014, Debbie said that she still dives.

The "easy meal in desperate times" hypothesis is one that rings true for me. There are obviously other neurological states and factors that also lead to attacks on humans, but that one seems like it could be the most common impetus. If they could somehow track tagged sharks' hunting success/failures, they might be able to get data that supports or refutes that hypothesis, but I'm not sure how that would be possible.
Why can’t someone make a clear surf board? Maybe that would stop shark attacks on surfers and they could maybe see sharks coming underneath. Just a thought …

That's awful..That's why I stay out of the water..even here in Florida we have gators everywhere looking at you.
And fucking snakes
That shark was hungry. Ate her that quick.
I never swam in the ocean probably only went knee deep in uk , the main reason was the film Jaws. I was done completely.
Even on the Isle of Wight or Littlehampton I still keep my eyes out and don't go too deep.
I saw Jaws as a kid too ✌️
Bro the thing you've got to worry about in the UK is the cold water
@@TheLuketh1990 you never know though what might be lurking.
@@TheLuketh1990
The UK is warned by the Gulf Stream. In summer it's not cold.
My man Hal back at it again with the quality content!
My man Paul back at it again with the quality comment! 🦈🩵
Makes me think of Shirley Ann Durdin in Port Lincoln in Australia in 1985
He mentions her near the end
I was unaware of that attack until i read your post. So I typed the name into Google, searched & had a read.
The attack is shocking, disgusting & horrifying....
My husband and I are looking to move back down to Florida and get a boat. We lived there for a few years back in the early 2000s and loved boating. I used to get in the water when we would anchor but I told him I don’t think I will anymore.
Good thinking ☺ i live near the water in Florida and I do not take chances with it !!
In Florida you're probably safer in the ocean than in the city.
@@steveclark8304 probably
@@steveclark8304 I stay away from cities. They are cesspools.
@@steveclark8304 Really? I thought Florida was quite a safe place to live many years ago. What has changed there to now make it unsafe?
I fear all the rubber is not healthy for the sharks.
Thanks Hal. 🦈 Very Very sad when anyone gets hurt by these fabulous creatures 😔
Great show Hal! I will not ever go into the ocean in Australia and definitely not close to where seals are. I just don't want to be fish food! Looking forward to seeing your next show soon 😁
40,000 Americans died on the roads last year. The ocean is safer than your car.
Just saying. Cheers 🥂
I can control my car but I can't control the shark
@aliciahawkins114
You can't control what somebody else's car will do though. That's why so many people die. Hit by a third party's uncontrollable car, sadly.
Sad ending Hal, however it's known, we go swum in their home! Great video, remain blessed and keep the videos coming 💫 💥 ☝️ 👍
God this story is horrific. Entire family forever scarred by having to witness this yet the shark just goes about his life and never thinks about it ever again. The world is strange.
You don't know. In idle moments the shark might enjoy recollecting that delicious meal he had.
When you really think about it.. this world is bizarre.... we arent even really sure what we are (evolved monkeys? dont think so).. and we are on this planet with all these different types of creatures.. have you ever really realized how crazy it is
@chadwellington2524 No one ever said that we are evolved from monkeys. Monkeys themselves are an evolved specie.
@@chadwellington2524we are a type of monkey.
We're based the elves on the monkey world.
I guess that would make oragutans dwarves and chimps orks.

The killer whales arrived too late.

Thank you Hal
Happy day. It's Hal
You’re the best Hal. Thank you for sharing you knowledge of sharks and shark attacks with us!!
Enter the water and your end up as turds rolling on the ocean floor 🤣🤣
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWW !!
I think a tourist did get eaten off the coast of Spain last month...
Thank you, Hal from South Africa 🇿🇦
Idiotic....or evil-smart? eh?
1:20 Hal's tone says it all.
I imagine Hal as a heavy drinker, he needs some good ol' Jim Beam to take the edge off due to all the shark horror he is constantly researching.
Finally got back to watching Hal. Only the best for me! 😂😊
Don't forget to like the video!
Another outstanding show, Hal.
RIP
_Edited for typo._
It was also pupping season the GWS favourite time to hunt for inexperienced prey.
@@annabizaro-doo-dah Great point, as if they needed the odds to be even further stacked against them (her).
Because this all is so utterly bizarre i wonder if the woman... might have intended this...?
RIP. That's brutal. Thanks Hal🦈
Love to watch your episodes from Australia👍
Good Morning Hal 👋😃☕
Hal, another outstanding video!
Thanks
Hello. Good Morning Hal 🦈🦈 Happy Shark Thursday 🦈🦈
Hal, you should write a book on all of the shark attacks you've done videos on.
Jaws left a huge mark on many of us 70s/80s kids. I was petrified even when on the 'jaws ride' in florida 😂. I have no desire to even dip a toe in the ocean or a lake.
...hey Paul!🍻 Hal, good morning 🌄 &

Thank you hal 😊
Great show as usual, Hal.
Thank you Hal.
I remember this one ‘ another one took place at almost the same time same location if I am not wrong 🤔
I've always agreed with you, Hal, regarding the "mistaken identity theory." Those sharks are intelligent and know the difference between pinniped and human. It's almost a guarantee that all Great Whites have encountered people, at some point in their development.
They also have the best eyesight in the sea. Better than most mammals, in fact.
Two consecutive attack videos which I don’t think I’ve ever heard. At least I can’t recall.
Great stuff Hal. Horrific, but great.
Human fast food!!! Lol 👍😀 🍔🍟 🐟🏊🐟 Excellent vids!! 😎 :)

I was on holiday in western Oz and wanted to go over to a seal colony off the coast : I asked tourist information how I could get over there and they told me there weren’t any regular boats but I could swim because it wasn’t very far 😂😂😂 . When I said it was to see sharks they told me there not around here 😂😂
Well at least they got something .

There was a woman near San Diego who also was attacked while swimming with seals next to a pier off of the beach. She was wearing a wetsuit.
What are the odds of giving birth to a set of quadruplets? Then, six years later, being consumed by a great white shark?
nice one Hal as per usual
I have heard that the white pointers which reside around Tasmania are super aggressive, more so than other white pointers.
Did you see how fast that Shark moved in the water after that piece of bait!? That shark was hungry!
😢
Next up mother of quintuplets gets inside the big cat habbitat and pokes a tiger with a stick.
They should get coach Carter to coach them. make them make 50 lay ups,50 free throws, and 50 3-pointers before they leave practice.
Peace! I used to work with John’s best friend he’s a chef 🧑🍳!!!…one night he told me the entire story and said Debbie was a vegetable right after the incident..
@@99alfailiwaqain51 my goodness, that's sad to hear. I could never imagine the horror that she experienced and the feelings following. The interview that I saw with her was from 2011 or so; I hooe that she is okay today.
@@KTtraintowin Peace! Yes he told me; John was like 6’2 210 lbs and very athletic…well he said Debbie explained to him; that Shark 🦈 was so enormous ,that John looked like a tiny rag doll in his mouth..she saw him being shaken violently…nuts …extremely tragic story..People Magazine covered it..

After seeing the videos of Simon Nellist and the one of Vladimir Popov,, you will never see me in the Ocean again, Or a Lake either.!
For me Nellist's death is still the most haunting. I feel sick everytime I remember it. I regret seeing the video. So sad...
Here Hall😄🙋🏻♀️👍
Years ago there was a guy that used to come and surf at dungeons near Hout Bay in South Africa with us and on the back of his wetsuit was written "I am not a seal" he was never attacked by a shark and that area is shark land lol 😂
Watching this, I thought to myself "Geez, Hal's hopped up on speed or something!" because you were talking so fast... Then I realized the playback speed was at 1.5 from a previous video i was watching. 🤣 Oops
We call it a small shark snack before supper?!
As soon as you get into the water, you become bait!
Yet there's vid's on YT instructing us to just "face the shark and turn it around by it's nose"... 😂😂😩
Hal, if you come to Oregon, I’ll treat you to a day of golf. We could play in Florence, or Newport on the coast. Cheers!
Hi Hal. This a place I'd never go!! It's a sad story !!!
Sharks can’t possibly have a very complicated thought process. I think as humans we over analyze everything.
Why can’t someone make a clear surf board? Maybe that would stop shark attacks on surfers and they could maybe see sharks coming underneath. Just a thought …
@OkieDokie680: Did you see the footage of a guy in a plexiglass box who got in it to see what a GW shark would do?? (He was an experienced diver and did it for a living). It attacked the box and he barely got away with his life. He did not go back in the ocean for a year during Covid. When he decided to go back in, he got on the boat to travel out to the dive site with friends and took a stroke. Now he can no longer dive.
Watching the guy trying to swim away without fins was true terror.@@lydiamcpherson7925
