Kate is not only an extraordinary singer, with a vocal range of up to 4 octaves, but she's an all round artistic genius - songwriter, dancer, arranger, producer, pianist. This video is certainly not the best demonstration of her talent., and I don't understand why people insist on recommending Wuthering Heights as a song to introduce her. Far better to try This Woman's Work from 1988, or her Duet with Peter Gabriel, Don't Give Up. She rarely toured or did live performances, preferring to concentrate on composition and production than the circus of the touring circuit, but there are many music videos over which she had full artistic control. Suggestions are Army Dreamers, Babooshka, Wow, Breathing, Cloudbusting, Running Up That Hill, Sensual World, Rubberband Girl, just to name a few. Yeah, I've never felt like this song is a good representation of her other work, even when considering how diverse her sound is. I would usually suggest Running Up That Hill or This Woman's Work as better introductions to her sound, especially for those who aren't in to super experimental stuff.
She's singing about the book/film wuthering heights. She's playing the part of Cathy while singing. Cathy was a ghost in the book/film hence the way she's singing how she is. I remember this as a kid dancing with my late loveley mum as a 5 year old. Wicked memories..
Wuthering Heights is a classic novel by the Bronte's, Kathy is a character who didn't marry Heathcliff because she wanted money first, things didn't go as planned. Check out "Babooshka."
These songs were like a soundtrack to that time, we heard them so often & I love them. The lyrics and mood of Wuthering Heights smash my emotions every time, poor Kathy outside the window come back to Heathcliff. I have to see the old b&w movie again now!

I think this was Kate's first television appearance and she wasn't allowed to use her own band which made it extra terrifying for her. She later said she almost died watching herself here. Not a good example of her ability.
The one and only song you need to check out is "This Woman's Work" by Kate to prove beyond doubt that she can sing. I think this was her first (?) live TV appearance and it was on the BBC. Back in the day if you sang live you could not have your own band and it had to be a cover by the BBC orchestra. This is a terrible introduction to Kate as you can hear the nerves in her voice. On the program at the start when she was being interviewed she sang live playing the piano to "Kashka From Baghdad" and this is on UA-cam (Live 1978). She was much more comfortable and gave a much better performance. Her voice has matured over the years. Definitely worth giving her another go.

Wuthering Heights was big at the time, I do find a lot of people like me needed to sit through it a few times, or also look up the background to the song to help find some more appreciation for it. Kate Bush's voice is out of the box! Australian Kate Miller-Heidke, whom you've reacted to before, sounds a lot like her. Bush's music isn't for everyone, but her voice is hypnotic. Babushka, Running Up That Hill and Don't Give Up were other big hits for her.
OOOOooohhhhhh You've opened Pandora's box now...You really need to see all her other stuff. I think she is a bot breathless here in this performance. Kate was always reluctant to perform live, which resulted in only one concert. But she had written over 50 songs by the time she was 15-16 and sang them to Pink Floyd's David Gilmore - who ultimately was so impressed he decided to help her financially to get her started in the industry. You would do well to listen to more of her stuff: "Cloudbusting", "Army Dreamers", "Babushka", "Running Up That Hill"...the list goes on.
Both Kate Bush (British), and Joni Mitchell (Canadian) are two of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. Both began with pure high soprano voices, both of their voices deepened and grew rich as they matured (Joni's got very deep due to chain smoking.) Try Kate's: The Man With the Child in His Eyes (studio recording), Wow (official video - Version 1), Babooshka (official video), Army Dreamers (official video), Running Up That Hill (official video), her duet with Peter Gabriel: Don't Give Up (official video). Then, you must turn your attention to Joni. Start with: River (studio recording). It's kind of a Christmas song....Joni is the Sun and Kate is the Moon!

Dude this is a: live, no auto tune, she’s one of a kind and one of the best ever, she always remind me of a Priestess from the Mists of Avalon, like she’s not truly real, she’s ethereal, magical, special, from the other world. I wasn’t yet 10 when this came out and it blew us all away as she did the rest of her career.
Look at 'This Woman's Work' written and sung originally by Kate Bush and later covered by Maxwell. And also covered by many other artists. Kate Bush has a huge catalogue of music that is uniquely her all the way.
I was a big fan of Kate Bush growing up because of her unique voice, creativity and beauty. She's definitely more on the "arty" side of singers. Even if she's not your taste it's good that you gave her a good listen. The official music video might have been a better starting point.
She's a genius and worthy of further exploration. We all thought she was nuts when we heard this ..but the almost goul like tone is so illustrative of her chosen text. She is nervous here but when she centres the voice as she truly can there is little doubt of the control she has over her instrument. She has written and performed so many great songs and many of them are not the typical chart toppers.
She's something else. A league of her own. She's been around for 40 years so she's not a novice. She's one of those artists that stands out of the ordinary. Check out her other works.
It is a theatrical song and she embodies that character of Cathy from 'Wuthering Heights' novel through this song. Maybe it is not the song or singing you are used to because it is really unconventional yet very expressive. If there is a Goddess in the music world, then it is definitely got to be Kate Bush.
This is one of the very few genuine live perfomances of this song or any other as Kate is absolutely terrified of singing in front of people. Crazy ? Yeah but at the end of the day she's a person like the rest of us. Fun fact : She was discovered by the lead guitarist and singer of Pink Floyd, David Gilmour in a bar in London.
This was her first tv performance and she was extremely nervous. Also, the band playing the music was the programmes band and not her band. They played the music slower than it should have been and didn’t have the piano parts. Listen to the studio recording/video. I recommend you listen to Never Be Mine from The Sensual World album.
She's singing as a ghost my friend hence the pale make up dark clothing that's why she stayed at that pitch all through it came out at the end of punk and she went to top for a whole month respect
I've always thought the weird, weird tone of this voice was part of the storytelling, cause she's singing as someone who's long dead, and I think it helps to not hear this first OR only hear it when you know the story of Wuthering Heights. But not all songs come at the right time - things like Moments of Pleasure never clicked with me til I got older, then the understated sentimentality finally made sense. If she'd leaned in harder I would've perhaps gotten it sooner, but it might not have stayed with me as long
Kate Bush has been around a long time. I first saw her on SNL (when it was great). Been a fan ever since. You should check another high octave (and way low octave) singer....Nina Hagan. She's not as smooth as Kate but she will definitely put a shrill up your spine. LOL
You need to listen to the revised version she did on the 1985 best hits album. You'll truly change your mind about this song. That was the first version I heard and I'm so glad I did.
Don't give up on Kate Bush. You are absolutely right, her voice has matured quite a bit since that. YOu need to check out This Woman's Work, or Hounds of Love.
that was a groundbreaking song at that time - you cant try to judge her by todays live standands - the acutally music video is the actual record which was studio produced!!
Kate Bush was one of the biggest artists in the UK in the 1970’s 1980’s.That wasn’t one of her better performances as it didn’t show off her creative side.Back in those days there was no auto tune but her creativity and videos were mind blowing. You have to see more of her videos.
Your reaction is similar to others who have just heard her music for the first time particularly with Wuthering Heights. Her voice is high, but she has many high and low ranges in her voice and music. You'll appreciate her music furthermore as she has developed her music career from the 70s, 80s, 90s and current times. There are some other great materials from her. This is. Once you know the storyline of the song and her studio version of wuthering heights is amazing.
Any other recommendations by her??

Maybe it is not the song or singing you are used to because it is really unconventional yet very expressive. If there is a Goddess in the music world, then it is definitely got to be Kate Bush.
It's not just the key; which is in C#, I think but the Octave. Kate had 4 Octaves.
If she'd leaned in harder I would've perhaps gotten it sooner, but it might not have stayed with me as long
A four octave range and she uses each and every not to devastating effect. A true musical genius. Check out This woman's work and Babooska
Kate is her own world and I’m a citizen of it, l adore her. Listen to Running Up That Hill for another side to her❤️
she was huge at the time, and had a number of hits. That was her song.
Running up that hill...Is a beautiful song she got better as she she went on..but such raw talent amazing.
You need to watch the official video for "Wuthering Heights". "Moments of Pleasure" and "Under the Ivy" are in my favourites.
You need to see the video, it's a performance!
I love Kate, so I am hopeful that you will listen to some more of her work.
She's an acquired taste 😂. This woman's work, is a great song of hers .
Don't give up on Kate Bush. You are absolutely right, her voice has matured quite a bit since that. YOu need to check out This Woman's Work, or Hounds of Love.
The novel Wuthering Heights is the inspiration.
Kate Bush ain't no background singer, she's a genius and the star of the show 🤣
Definitley Running up that hill , both the Kate Bush original and the Placebo cover version both huge hits in Britain , Europe and Australia .
If you want to hear a beautiful example of Kate's voice, listen to "Oh England, My Lion Heart". Quite a range and control.
'Hounds Of love' by Kate Bush is the greatest album of all time. Don't @ me!
that was a groundbreaking song at that time - you cant try to judge her by todays live standands - the acutally music video is the actual record which was studio produced!!
Kate Bush was one of the biggest artists in the UK in the 1970’s 1980’s.That wasn’t one of her better performances as it didn’t show off her creative side.Back in those days there was no auto tune but her creativity and videos were mind blowing. You have to see more of her videos.
Running Up That Hill
There's a reason she's singing so high for this song, it's because she's supposed to be a ghost. It's based on tge story of Wuthering Heights
Kate is a great, unique artist discovered by David Gilmore from Pink Floyd many years ago… ‘Running Up That Hill’ was another hit song of hers 👍
I love running up that hill, cloud busting and don’t give up with Peter Gabriel.
The more you hear her the more she grows on you, in love with Kate back in the 70's, try Babooshka.
ROFL. Was waiting for those first vocals to drop. If she did backup for anyone you would have remembered.
Your thinking of Kate Miller Heidke who has also covered this live.
Welcome to Kate
Running up that hill!!!!!!
Most girl singers don't have the first clue as to how to sing in that register. Kate does it effortlessly.
About her key singing this, this is because the character of the song is a ghost and she's trying to do a voice that sounds not-from-this-world
Her voice matured, deeper and larger. Check out her 1986 version.
You should do “Stay” by Shakespears Sister
