You have stumbled upon one of the most innovative artists of our time. She had written over 200 songs by the age of 16. Her music is truly a genre of its own and with each release she went deeper into 'Her' sound. Her fourth album, 'The Dreaming' was by far her wildest and most experimental work, it was followed by what is widely regarded as her greatest, 'Hounds of Love'. EMI was pressuring her to write more 'hits' after the controversial response to The Dreaming, so she wrote side one for the charting singles and then side two, her magnum opus; The Ninth Wave, a seven part epic suite that is devastatingly powerful. And this in 1985, when exotic epics were absolutely forbidden. No-one even dared speak the words 'concept' or 'art-rock' or 'progressive' during the shrink wrapped, plastic, toilet paper commercial era of 80s MTV, when all was nice and short and shiney..
-But then along came Kate...
Yes, having a concept on an album was something that many thought had been consigned to the 1970s and had no place in the 1980s.
My understanding is that Kate came up with the idea of "The Ninth Wave" concept first, but she wasn't looking to have a whole concept album.
Which naturally led to the split between the commercial first side - although all the songs on it still had a linking theme of relationships - and the fantastic "Ninth Wave" on the second side.
The resulting album having something for everyone, the perfect mix of the commercial and the experimental.
Then quite a few years later we get Aerial double album where the 2nd one is a whole concept album.
In terms of my personal ranking "Hounds Of Love" comes second to "The Dreaming" - purely because the way that Kate went all out for it, when she was the sole producer. I do think that "The Dreaming" was a necessary stepping stone to get to the iconic "Hounds Of Love".

Kate is singing as the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw here, as per the novel, hence the ethereal voice

She's the only musician that I would consider a true genius. There is no other artists alive or dead that mastered that many disciplines to perfection. She is a polymath. A one in a trillion talent.

'Wuthering Heights' is her obligatory weird Kate Bush song. But 'Don't Give Up' with the writer Peter Gabriel is a must-listen and her anti-war video 'Army Dreamers' is an underplayed, but devastatingly strong work. She is an artistic intellectual singer/songwriter. 'Woman's Work' is incredible (the official video is the best as far as I am concerned). Heavy, interesting subject. And of course, 'Climbing Up That Hill' is quite popular now due to the Stranger Things episode. Having the mega-star Canadian actor Donald Sutherland in 'Cloud Busting' doesn't hurt!

I was 13/14 when Wuthering Heights was released & saw the famous “Red Dress version” of the clip, I was hooked - I stepped through the looking glass into the extraordinary world of Kate Bush & have loved her ever since. “Man with the Child in his Eyes” from this same album “The Kick Inside” is my fave from this album. So many iconic songs/videos from over the years - I think she was the first artist for me where the visuals to the songs were so incredible & gave so much to the enjoyment of the song.

She's a true artist... she can also smooth out her voice so it's angelic. She obviously incorporates modern dance into her performance, and because of that she invented the modern HEADSET microphone. She's literally of the greatest, most creative, inventive women in musical history.

I was 15 when this came out and I saw her very first appearance on Top of the Pops (pop programme on BBC1). At this that, disco was still big and punk was coming through. This was just completely different and 'out there'. I was hooked from the start. I really hope you do a Kate deep dive. There's so much to discover and enjoy. (have subscribed). :)

"Wuthering Heights" was the first song I ever heard from Kate Bush, and I was convinced. My sister had bought the compilation, The Whole Story, and I loved every song on it, feeling similar as I did the first time I heard Pink Floyd--I didn't know pop music could be so artistic, and I still love it! Part of the song's brilliance is that Kate Bush is singing as if she is a ghost, the dead Cathy from the novel Wuthering Heights, and I'm not sure anyone could do it better. Kate Bush is an artist!

Welcome to the icon that is Kate Bush. I'm not a massive music fan but there is something mesmerizing about her music that draws you in, and she often sings from the pov of the songs protaganist, Kathy's ghost in this instance. Kate Bush writes music her own way and never panders to the mainstream which makes her back catalogue as eclectic as any other artist out there. Hope you love going down the Kate Bush rabbit hole.

Been listening to KB for 40 years. This was my favorite song of hers for most of that time. A fire took all 600 of my CD's 9 years ago, including my huge Kate Bush collection, so I'm sure my taste has changed. But it's so weird that 2 days in a row you have done a couple of my top favorite songs. My #1 faves being Boston's first 3 albums, then everything else comes after that.
But this is all about Kate Bush! You have been HOOKED! Intrigued, right? You MUST listen to at least her first 3 albums. But be sure not to leave out the 4th. "Art Pop" is a good way to describe it. Absolutely unique in an incredible way! Insanely artistic music, and very pleasing to the ear.
I agree, because even Kate's album tracks brilliant, her music catalogue is packed full of great wonderful music.

FYI- A frequent part of Kate's success and sound, bassist and engineer Del Palmer, died today. As someone whom Kate had much respect for and a romantic relationship with, I just wanted to let you know that today will be a hard day for her. RIP Del Palmer

He was a very lyrical and melodic bass player.
His playing perfectly fitted and enhanced Kate's early work.
I didn't realize that it was Del in some of her videos. I thought it was her brother John Carder. I know her other brother Paddy was in them.
R.I.P. Del Palmer who was her buddy for many years and worked very closely with her. He was member of the K.T.Bush Band from the start. That was before the release of her debutalbum. He also contributed on The Tour Of Life in 1979. Kate and he had a personal relationship that lasted until the early 90's. Del was a superb bassplayer and has had some releases of his own. He is to be seen on severel video's by Kate, but the most obvious contribution of his is on the cover of The Dreaming. Kate and Del worked many, many hours in the studio, producing her records together. He was to be known as a kind gentleman.
"Best voice ever". I would almost share this as I've been a huge KB fan from the beginning BUT you need to listen to Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins but she also made collaborations with Massive Attack on 4 "Mezzanine" tracks and The Bathers' s "Sunpowder" which is a masterful unknown album). Incredible singing skills! And Dead Can Dance Lisa Gerrard is another impressive voice which makes, for me, Kate Bush third on the list.
This song has unique song structure unlike anything else that was in the charts at the time.
Kate herself described it as "circular" in that the closing guitar solo is a repeat musically of Kate's vocals.
In addition there are very unusual key changes and also timing, which is a characteristic of quite a few of her songs.
Kate never formally studied musical theory, so her approach was to compose songs that sounded nice to her , rather than following a set pattern., an instinctive song writer.
Kate has been likened to being a female David Bowie, whether that's true I will leave to others to decide.
This is for many many people one of the most unique and artistically well-rounded singer and song writer i have ever heard.Plz do the whole debut album! You can't miss with Kate..(a huge pioneer with recording techniques with synthesisers and performing her own music,while dancing,using for the first time a head attached microphone..long before Madonna,and a big influence for many female artists as well..
Wow, what!? I’ve never heard of her! The video sealed it for me. If I had only heard the song, it wouldn’t have interested me. But watching her perform was crazy/awesome/entertainment. She definitely broke the typical music mold-similar to Nina Hagen. I will be looking for more of her stuff ASAP

Personally I prefer the video of her in her iconic red dress in the field evoking the spirit of Cathy beckoning her Heathcliff. There are clubs of people celebrating the anniversary of this song in their red dresses all over the world! Kate Bush is a force that sets your imagination aflame at any age. I so love her creative mind and the music she has produced.

I would recommend a song by her for you to react to, but honestly you could listen to any of them and I'd be happy. My favorite artist. An icon. A genius, even.
I remember my dad walking in the room when this was on 'Top Of The Pops'. "What the hell is that?" he said, but he was mesmerised and stood there transfixed. That was a common reaction! Kate is an amazing, unique talent. 'Never For Ever' is probably my favourite album of hers, though 'Cloudbusting' from 'Hounds of Love' is my favourite song. Any way you go, you've struck a seam of gold here.
Not only is Kate a deep dive for reviews, but this album in itself has several absolute classics, notably this track and the astonishing "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" (written when she was only about 14!), but also deeper cuts like "Feel It". A one off, self-taught, out of the box talent producing songs with mesmerising structures and intelligent lyrics - and an impressive interpretive dancer to boot!
Kate Bush was among the first, if not THE first female vocalist to form a company to purchase her catalog to ensure she always maintained ownership and control over her material - I think I read that she was still in her teens when she did that. Also, she took performative art dancing classes and learned how to choreograph her own work because she met some resistance off and on in her career. She controlled her material from composition to sales to ownership. Recommend "Running Up That Hill" for your next effort.

Nice thoughtful reaction/analysis. In case you didn’t pick up on this, Kate was singing in character as a ghost, using vocal inflections, dance and mime to reinforce this. Kate was most often associated with the art pop/art rock/prog rock genres just to try fitting her somewhere but she was really her own genre. She is very special and did it all - singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, music revolutionary, producer, dancer, mime, choreographer, video director and innovator, visionary. Laughable that it has taken until 2023 for her to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, something she is clearly over qualified for. Debatable whether any other female artist, past or present, has come close to her. Didn’t really do mainstream and only did the one live tour back in 1979. Never toured the US and did not fit anywhere in America’s format driven radio network at that time. The fact that she was known at all in the US prior to the 1985 release of ‘Running Up That Hill’ owed much to college radio.
A few years ago she decided to a very rare live show (Before the Dawn) It sold out in minutes with people coming from all over the world. Went to the same dance and mime school as Bowie. Hit number 1 witha reissue of running up that hill 40 years after original issued. Queens Bohemian Rhapsody and this video among first videos on MTV it goes on totally unique artist
I was lucky enough to attend one of the 2014 Before the Dawn shows (having missed her 1979 tour). It was a truly out of body experience for someone who's been a fan from the beginning. Tears of joy were she'd. A memory I will relive till my dying day. Beautiful woman, beautiful music, beautiful memories.

My wonderful wife managed to get me a ticket to Before the Dawn concerts too, its was such an incredible experience and when Kate first appeared I’ve never experienced such a wave of love, it was like a physical force
Everything Kate does is pure fire, she is creative, innovative, intelligent, philosophical, and has a sharp sense of humour. Listen to any of her songs and you will be impressed, some of my favourites are This Womans Work, The Man With the Child in His Eyes, Army Dreamers, Cloud Busting and Babooshka
Like many; I've loved Kate Bush from many, many years since hearing her back in the 80s when this song was out. Another big fan of Kate's is the singer Pat Benatar. Her second album; Crimes of Passion, covered this song in Pat operatic voice. Years later; on the album Wide Awake in Dreamland, the song "All Fired Up" uses the line 'Gotta feel The Kick Inside', taking the title from Bush's first album. If you can; you should give it a listen. Not every Kate Bush fan likes this version, but it's ombre I'd my favorite songs from both ladies

Late 70s for this one. 1980 for babooshka. 1983 for breathing. 1985 running up that hill.. So much more as well. The Man with The Child in His Eyes written in 1976. She's a genius.
I remember the day I first heard Wuthering Heights on the radio in South Africa in the 1970's. It was SO different and catchy at the same time. And then the video was shown on our then fledgling TV broadcasts. I was blown away and an immediate life long fan. Bought many LP's over the years and her biography and I continue to read about her. I love every song on her first album (The Kick Inside). Her official videos are breathtakingly beautiful and meaningful. My personal most favourite songs are: Moments of pleasure + And so is love.

Cathy was the main female protaganist in Wuthering Heights which is probably one of the most revered and haunting novels in the English language, written by Emily Bronte who was born July 30th 1818. Kate Bush, who was called Cathy as a child, was born 140 years to the day, July 30th 1958. She felt a connection.
I came up in the ‘80’s- Kate Bush is iconic! This song, This Women’s Work (very moving) and Babushka are my favourite songs of hers and I think the best/ most accessible tunes.
I remember her first album coming out and everyone was talking about her and the album. She was so original and completely different. Love her.

I envy you so much for the wonderful journey you have ahead as you explore the fabulously creative music of Kate Bush. Having heard this when it was first released in the UK (I'm that old) let me tell you that this song, like all Kate's music, doesn't age.

The Whole Story was my first Kate album, so that version was the first time I heard this song. I was 13 then. Still my favourite artist.
I believe the way she sang the original is it was her idea of how a ghost might sound.

Her debute album The Kick Inside was for me an instant buy. I love all the songs of this album. For a young woman of only 20 years old her perception of the world around her is astonishing. Do yourself a favor and listen to every song. Kate Bus has a unique composing style and a unique voice. The subject matter in her songs is very creative and full surprises.
I have an obsession with the Emile Bronte novel and a particular movie version of Wuthering Heights. For me the lyrics hold special meaning. Also, Kate Bush has some of the most diverse "fringe" music on all of her albums. Definitely worth going down the rabbit hole, each trail will be a new experience.

that was my introduction to her as well 8 years ago or so. Didn't even know it was a hit but as soon as I listened to it I had to message my friend to tell her this arrangement was out of this freaking world! Time went on and she's my favorite musician period. Not only she collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Prince would describe her as his "favorite woman" and they worked together on a song called 'Why Should I Love You?' and it's fantastic

She'll take down a very interesting rabbit hole if you listen to more. She's so musically brilliant and has got some really good songs. None of her music is conventional , so you'll not find any artist to compare her with and I don't think you can even categorise her music.
Always loved her evocative phrasing. I honestly could never put my finger on what I liked the most about Kate Bush; of course, with her "Running Up That Hill" figuring so prominently in "Stranger Things", I would have hoped for another resurgence of her music. Unique talent; could you actually see her being embraced by today's music fans? I don't think anyone can answer that question, but self-reflection is a healthy start!
This was the first song I heard of hers, and I went from disbelief/discomfort to being a lifelong fan in 2-3 minutes. I think it rewired my brain in real time. I see the same thing happen to others when they first listen to it.

Beautiful Kate Bush. What a spirit. I was only 8 in 78 so I liked her beauty more later on. She is an angel of music and song.
Kate was what we Brits call a Marmite taste, you either loved her or hated her and I loved her (the only one in my family who did). I remember coming back from school for lunch and saying to my mum who's the new no.1 and she said 'that screechy woman'. After this album her biggest commercial success was the Hounds of Love. You never knew what you were going to get from Kate everything was different taking influences from classical music to Australian Aboriginal melodies and instruments. Many great female artists had gone before her but she paved the way for those after her.
Your response is similar to mine when I first heard this song on a podcast nearly three years ago. I simply could not stop listening to it. For the next week I played it over and over - I was that spellbound by it. Then, of course, I had to get my hands on as much of Kate’s music as possible. I hadn’t been that excited about an artist for over 25 years.
You simply must listen to her Hounds of Love album - it’s a masterpiece, easily one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. I can’t find the words to do justice to it.

Be sure to also "love you up" some "Hounds of Love" - Kate Bush's 1984 album - so full of atmosphere - with Kate's maturing vocals hitting a broader range to include the lower registers. She might have been a good writer of movie soundtracks. But anyway - I also marvel at her ballet choreography she puts in to her performance.

Kare Bush was a prodigy. The musicality, depth and breadth of her early work is astounding. "Jig of Life," "Dreaming," "Army Dreamers" and "Under Ice" are standouts. At college, Kate and Peter Gabriel were in heavy rotation being artists w/ similarly complex music. Gabriel's seminal Security album is jam- packed w/ amazing songs I.E. "Rhythm of the heat" and "Wallflower"

I was a child when I first listen to Kate with this song and got obsessed with it. Fortunately my older sister bought a long play and this song and Babooshka were there. As I was a boy and didn´t speak or undersrand English didn´t know the lyrics or the meaning and nobody wanted to tell me because of being underage haha. I repeated part of the lyrics anyway

What the previous people have suggested are all great suggestions but I would also suggest "Rockets Tail " with backing vocals by Trio Bulgarka. If you like world music this will give you just a little taste. You have barely scratched the surface.

Hi and thanks for this very enjoyable (and entertaining) video. This song is one of those very rare watershed moments in music where things changed and people knew that they had changed. There was something undeniably different, undeniably "odd" but undeniably beautiful about it that set it apart from everything else: Elton John has talked about everyone waiting for the next 'Wuthering Heights' but they are wasting their time there never will be another. One of the musicians who worked on the album this song is taken from was Morris pert. he talked about the first day of recording and about Kate singing 'Wuthering Heights' in that memorable single take. he said that some of the personnel went to the pub after that first day and were certain that she was much more than the usual new girl singing her songs at a piano. They knew she was very talented. They were convince that she was so completely new and different from everything and everyone else that she would either fail spectacularly or else she would start a revolution. But he added that she was so completely unique that none of them were certain as to which it would be. As it turned out she started a revolution.
John Lennon had her music on his personal playlist just before he was killed. Prince was completely smitten by her 1985 album 'Hounds of Love,' playing it endlessly and calling her his favourite woman. In very similar fashion Tupac was a huge fan.
As to her impact on female musicians - Lady Gaga is a fan as is Adele. Chrissie Hynde described her as having the perfect voice. Stevie Nicks has spoken about her wish to cover one of her songs but added that she won't because if you can't beat the original you are wasting your time. Bjork has talked about her as being her musical heroine in her formative years of listening to music and has cited her 1982 album 'The Dreaming' among her all time favourite albums. Tori Amos has eulogized her ability to take a single word song title and then fuse it together with music and sounds so as to create a completely new musical language. She was a hero to the young Sinead O'Connor who etched her name onto her school bag.

Midge Ure (Ultravox etc) has described working with her as 'glorious [...] I realised I didn’t have to be aiming for three-minute pop songs, that I could make pieces of music I love, even if nobody else gets it.”

I'm going to give you the same heads up I give everyone who ventures into Kate Bush territory: Side 2 of Hounds of Love is a musical suite (of individual songs) called The Ninth Wave and is a self-contained narrative in total (a story). Side 1 is a bunch of songs that are generally unrelated. Just so you know when you get there.
I highly recommend covering The Ninth Wave in it's entirety. (The first song is called And Dream of Sheep) The Ninth Wave is an emotionally evocative work of musical art. In my opinion, it is possibly the greatest "album" ever produced. In any case, it's got some depth to it, to say the least.

Great review/reaction. I love that you do the research into the artist, album and single too. This is indeed a truly ground-breaking song, and Kate Bush is a very special and unique artist. Many massively successful female artists since have credited her as a major influence on them. My favourite album of hers is "Hounds of Love" but there is a lot of great material from her to discover, including the duet "Don't Give Up" which she made with another of my favourite artists, Peter Gabriel (who is also well worth exploring if you haven't yet).
The melody is really beautiful and that guitar baseline is really smooth.
