You know that as I get older I have found that I do not like cabinets at all! I have moved to hanging my pots so that I can easily see where and what I have to use. That way I do not have to ask my 6 year old to come over and get a pot out of the back of the cabinet for me, even with a sliding shelf. I just can not bend down there since I no longer have disks in my lower back and bars in my neck. Great Idea for the young and able though.
ChileExpatFamily What about insects, like flies, just lounging on them all day? And dust? There's a reason people started using cabinets, you know? :) I've seen quite a few of these really shallow, wall-mounted kitchen cabinets in England. I don't know what they call them, but they are these huge, flat cabinets (about 2 x 2 m - but only maybe 20-25 cm deep). The top part of the inside has hooks for hanging pots and whatnot. And then under that area there's just small shelves running the full width of the cabinet - sometimes with little drawers built in between the shelves - for all your bowls and jars, etc.. And I love the doors on them. The left (or right) one is coupled with the middle one, so that when you open it it is hinged on the middle door. BUT - when you then open the middle one, something magical happens: It folds neatly onto the left one - goes "click" - amd then they are both one door hinged on the far left side (where you usually open the left door). I have no idea how this works, but it's really lovely to operate. When you then close the door again it goes "click" and the middle door pops off from the left one, and now the left one is again hinged to the middle door. Drives me crazy thinking about how to do it.. lol Anyway, sorry you had to be subject to this rant on cabinets.. :)
guggi uggi That is ok! We have very few bugs where I live here in Chile. Cabinets are great, but I no longer can feel my legs and when I bed down it causes me to have real problems. So for me I like hanging them from the ceiling from a pot rack. Kind of like in a commercial or restaurant kitchen. It is just what works for me is all I am saying.
ChileExpatFamily Sorry, all I got was something about "very few bugs"... Please excuse me, I have to pack up and move to Chile... lol :P Just kidding.. And I wasn't saying you're weird for not using cabinets, or anything like that... :P I hate them too. I only use two pans and three pots though, so they always just sit on the stove, and I move them when I need to. But crawling through cabinets trying to reach a bowl or something suuuucks (I have a busted neck and back from a bus crash). Which is what got me thinking about those flat cabinets, because with them everything is right there in front of you since they hang at eye-level. But with the benefit of having doors to protect stuff inside them. But those "magic" doors are really needed to make it practical, so I won't be upgrading from the chaos-cabinets I have now any time soon.. :P
Weiter so! ;-)
Corner cabinets in Kitchens are a universal problem. Many VERY expensive solutions have been designed, but they tend to waste space, ANYTHING that helps make these glory holes useful again is very welcome. Thanks Matt.
Yet more class from one of the tidiest woodworkers on UA-cam. The thing I love about vids like this is that it makes me think about practical usages of the jigs and machines you designed. I need that box joint jig in my life. And a pantorouter. And a wooden bandsaw.
You are one bad dude, Matt. You are always thinking outside the "Box". The UHMW tape is some good stuff, saves space in a lot of applications, I enjoy all of your videos.
Brilliant! Love your solutions and humor. I too get thing organized, turn around and wonder what happened. at least now its easier to organize your cabinet often.
I am working on cabinets for my laundry room and have this issue there as well. However, my opening will be 2 feet and the blind corner is 2 feet. So, I think I can do this with the one removable box per shelf, but I am worried that a 2ft square box might be unweildy, but this is brilliant and I think I will be using it!! Thank you!!
That two dislikes came from two female subscribers when they heard "Rachel". Awesome ideas and, personally, just love the solution of connecting those two drawers.
Good use of the space. That's an inexpensive way to do it. You can buy corner cabinet racks etc. and they are very pricey.Good video Thanks Matthias, Roland
Ok Matthias, Seriously great recovery on the hinge oversight!!! I suspect that had it not been for your solid joint work in the corners, I would question the box's longevity with such a notch.
Hey Matthias, Someone posted your one of your videos to reddit last week, and I have been watching them non-stop. You're kind of like the modern, uncensored, Canadian version of "New Yankee Workshop," which I loved as a kid. All of your projects are amazing and it's mesmerizing watching you work. Thanks for making such awesome videos!
This problem is why I always build kitchens with lazy susans in the corner rather than blind cabinets like this one. This is a great solution. I had a similar arrangement with a single pullout in some bathroom cabinets and made the exact same mistake with the hinge clearance!
Good point about how long it will stay organized. Surprised that a guy who designed the pantorouter didn't come up with a more mechanical design and build solution. Guess you just wanted something anyone could build quickly. Thanks for sharing.
Admiro mucho sus videos por la gran capacidad de creatividad y pensamiento además de capacidad de realización de las mismas, felicitaciones desde Colombia
That's a nice idea. I have a similar problem, and I expect a lot of people do. I would have considered some small wheels to reduce friction. I think the tape will snag eventually, or the weight in the boxes make it impractical.
Hi Mathias! Good logic for sliding. You should try something similar to ikea's folding. That one is a metal one however. We'd love see you hack that and share a plan.
Did you consider making two boxes that where the full length of the "big inside box", but only half the width? It would resemble an equal sign over your left big box on your drawing. They could probably be fit inside without having to be assembled inside the cabinet and wouldn't require you to pull out the second box - as the current setup is. Love your channel!
That's a really great idea. I got one of those cabinets in my kitchen but we used a different method of getting back there. We got 2 baskets inside that you can turn out kinda like half a lazy susan that revolves outwards and you can pull each of the baskets out separately along a rail kinda like a dishwasher rack. It doesnt really utilize all the space in the cabinet quite like yours does though.
Did you add similar boxes to the upper shelf in this cabinet as well? You have inspired me to use this idea for our kitchen cabinets which has an almost identical dead space in the corner cabinet.
Good idea Rachel, great execution Matthias. It's nice you can fully remove it. The higher back is a good idea, but I'd probably have gone full height. Don't underestimate my ability to lose something back there. How about some lighting in the back ? Low voltage and heat LED, switched on the door or a photocell
I have the exact same problem. I think I'll have to think about an improved solution since my cabinet doesn't have two "floors", but the key idea is there. Thank you.
Make a duplicate set and mount them 12in higher so less jumble capacity in each box. Brilliant design engineering, with Rachel's help to simplify the problem of you swearing during assembly!
Great idea, i have been looking a the kornerking model myself for he last couple of years. Just haven't quite gotten to it yet. definitely worth a google. Regards JP
As you calmly explained the problem of the boxes not fitting and your brilliant solution, I could only imagine myself in that situation; throwing a temper tantrum, shouting curses, and likely challenging the existence of a higher power.
Nice solution! I would have wish if you tape your reaction to the hinge miscalculation! but nice turn around, simple fast and it worked! Truly you made the right question, how long will it last "organized"! lol Ed
Great idea Matthias! I've got this exact same problem in my kitchen.. this is a great solution! Thanks for sharing this

Btw, that really sucks about your legs. Much sympathy... :O
From ancient to modern times the kitchen has remained the heart of the home.
Who ever has thumbs down on any of Matt's videos lows nothing about woodworking!!! Matt is a freaken woodworking genius!!!!!!

These videos are so entertaining. Thanks for the hard work you put in them.
That's a really cool idea.
Well done.
Great solution to an obnoxious problem!

Güzel bir uygulama
Watching your videos always leaves me on the edge of my seat. When you screw up a project, you always seem to have a fix.

I love how this video shows your complete thought process, including how you overcame bad measurement!
You never cease to amaze me with your solutions. They seem so simple after you do them. Thanks for all of the great videos.
The best solution to blind cabinets so far. I also like that your solution to the hinge really still maximizes the full depth of the cabinet. Genius!
This is great! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's cabinets get like that! Nice solution.
Matthias, you just never cease to amaze me with your cleverness! That's a good thing btw.
You are one bad dude, Matt. You are always thinking outside the "Box". The UHMW tape is some good stuff, saves space in a lot of applications, I enjoy all of your videos.
From the youtube that i saw from now, you are the most traditional drawer maker. And impressive to me.
Always a pleasure to watch and learn a trick or two... Thanks for sharing!
I liked the paper mock up! It is always a nice way to present your idea. :)
Very satisfying when you slot the boxes in place
What a great idea. This is one of the biggest problems in the kitchen. That corner cabinet will never be the same.
This is as good as any solution I've seen for the corner conundrum, DIY or professional.
Congratulations: a promising project. It's fun to watch how the three boxes are pulled out.
Wow. Impressive use of tools, jigs, etc. And to-the-point videos. Great!
This guy always makes short neat videos with interesting solutions to what you would think to be hard problems :P
Dang Matthias, that hook is so simple yet so clever, nice job
I love watching you solve problems. You often solve many of mine.
I like that you used wood that you milled yourself for this... To me that makes it even cooler !
This is a wonderful idea, Matthias. I've got a couple of inaccessable areas in cabinets in my kitchen as well.. Looks like I'm building boxes!
I have same cabinet problem great Idea. thanks for all the humor in your vid as well. Keep making more projects.
Brilliant! Love your solutions and humor. I too get thing organized, turn around and wonder what happened. at least now its easier to organize your cabinet often.

You are my Favorite wood worker on UA-cam. I love those Box Joints instead of using screws which are not as strong and don't look as good either.
That two dislikes came from two female subscribers when they heard "Rachel". Awesome ideas and, personally, just love the solution of connecting those two drawers.

Fantastic idea Matthias!! And a great way to highlight how to work around a measurement "Whoops!"
Another great project. Thanks Matt.

What an excellent idea. Nice job, Mattias

Those wooden right angle guides for making the drawers square are really cool. I need to make some of those.
Looks like you're taking care of that honey to do list! Well done once again.
Mathias i enjoyed yor episode on the sliding cabinet organizer. I been looking for an idea like your in which to put to practice. Thank you.
That is a really great idea! I wish that I had thought of that! Well done!
that's the thing I like about your videos is how you see a problem and find a way to solve it.
God I just love this guy! Great ending "But the real question is 'How long will it stay that way'".
Matthias, all around good guy/genius.
I dont know who can dislike this video!!
Nice idea, nice result :)
Thank You for thinking for me and solving my problem as usual you make complicated stuff simple .
I enjoy your videos. Your wife must really be patient with all of this. Keep it up
The part that causes a lot of cursing cracked me up - that's completely me!
Great solutions and video Matthias!
That wood is beautiful.
Truly brilliant idea. I have a cabinet just like this, and anything I put into it always get lost in the back of it and takes so long to dig out.
Ha, great angle... love the sounds on the high speed portion. Better than music.
Another great thing from you. Clever idea and well made.
Hello from Denmark.
What an excellent idea. I have the same problem in my house so this will help a lot.
This problem is why I always build kitchens with lazy susans in the corner rather than blind cabinets like this one. This is a great solution. I had a similar arrangement with a single pullout in some bathroom cabinets and made the exact same mistake with the hinge clearance!
This may sound silly, but who is Rachel?
i think his Wife

Ah yes, . . the Tape Measure!
Of all the tools, . . . this is the hardest one to master, Chuckle Chuckle.
Great Vid as usual, many thanks Matthias.
A solution that could work for many people^^ Nice idea!
you're such a genius, i like watching your videos.
That's a nice idea. I have a similar problem, and I expect a lot of people do. I would have considered some small wheels to reduce friction. I think the tape will snag eventually, or the weight in the boxes make it impractical.
Nice solution ! I really like the workaround for the "hinge" problem :)
Great solution to the problem!!!
Thanks for the video
great idea. Loved the link part for the 2 boxes
I love your idea! I’m going to do this but with crates. My girl loves the farmhouse theme. Thanks for the wonderful idea!
Another great build from the wizard
I like how you make these videos into wee stories. I have no idea how long you spend planning and editing but they turn out great.
Hi Mathias! Good logic for sliding. You should try something similar to ikea's folding. That one is a metal one however. We'd love see you hack that and share a plan.

lorangdahl I suppose. But if I make three boxes, I might as well be able to pull them out, like I did.

exelente, muy bueno, maestro.
excellent, very good teacher.
their contribution ... excellent!
i just love how you think in so many ways...and love your vids!!...keep up the great work you do...p.
That is just what I need to do to my corner cabinet. Thanks
I have the exact same problem. I think I'll have to think about an improved solution since my cabinet doesn't have two "floors", but the key idea is there. Thank you.
I need these! Thanks for the great idea!!!
Brilliant as always....love your vids, thanks for sharing.
You are a craftsman Matthias. Nice workaround for the hinge issue!
Very clever solution. The gremlins that live inside cabinets can now start to work to disorganize!
This is terrific... No need for slides..
it will stay tidy as long as my workbench is. Two weeks at the most!
For the rest, great solution!
Make a duplicate set and mount them 12in higher so less jumble capacity in each box. Brilliant design engineering, with Rachel's help to simplify the problem of you swearing during assembly!
Is the UHMW plastic slippery enough, or do you wish you had put small casters/bearings on the bottoms?
Matt Heere It's ok. The varnish on it's own is actually quite slippery, so I'm not sure if the tape is an improvement.
Great idea, i have been looking a the kornerking model myself for he last couple of years. Just haven't quite gotten to it yet. definitely worth a google. Regards JP
Great punch-line Matthias!
As you calmly explained the problem of the boxes not fitting and your brilliant solution, I could only imagine myself in that situation; throwing a temper tantrum, shouting curses, and likely challenging the existence of a higher power.
Too beautiful boxes to hide there. :) Nice job!
muy buen video eres genial soy mexicano y me gustaria aprender a trabajar la madera gracias por tus videos
Nice solution! I would have wish if you tape your reaction to the hinge miscalculation! but nice turn around, simple fast and it worked!
Truly you made the right question, how long will it last "organized"! lol
