Agreed. Flying Cowboys is a masterpiece. I don’t think there’s one bad song on that album. No fodder, no fill. I still remember the one song when Rickie sez, “Hey mister can we have our ball back?”
It's about the kind of friends and lovers and ex-lovers that may not be ever and eternally in your life, but which orbit you as you orbit them. No matter how long between sightings of your satellites, it's as if you just met them last week, last month, yesterday. Each meeting a joy, each one stolen from time, each one precious. Jones is a poet - find the meaning in the heart of her images and make it your own.
The best thing to do is admit your and their mistakes and forgive yourself and them too. Them that gravitational pool that keeps them drifting away and back to you will be broken.
What wonderful and True commentary. Many thanks for stating my thoughts, but more Poetically than I would have. I have always believed in this theory. It came to me when I was six - years -old. I feel so affirmed by Rickie Lee, and by your deLightful thoughts. PeaceLoveSmilesMusic, 💞CFT💞
Incredible how Walter Becker's contribution as a producer is tangible here. The soprano sax was his idea and mix perfectly with the song. Great, great work.
This song seems timeless. It's always excellent. Listening to it due to Walter Becker's passing. We are losing talented musicians that are not being replaced. Technology has replaced musicianship. It's a shame.
Have faith, amigo.... But instead of waiting for the new talent to arrive, why don't WE be the talent? All of us?huh? Is that really such a crazy idea? Walter Becker sez NO ... And would maybe like to hear some new songs up yonder.... He might get in a fight w some of the angels up there while he tries to rearrange their strings! Just sayin'!
I miss you Emily. Listening to this song with you in your tiny apartment in Pasadena and watching you play clarinet was a memory I will always treasure. I miss you. You and I will always be satellites.
Great matching of song and production. I'm glad someone had the idea to have her call Walter Becker to produce this album. Thank goodness Rickie didn't lose that number.
Yeah, for the knuckheads who do not appreciate the depth and soul of Rickie Lee's music, here are the words. Probably just like the people who complain at a sunset that they're losing their light with the sun going down. You all are missing the beauty right in front of you!
First heard this song on a train from Durban to Johburg in 1990. Had no clue about the title or artist but loved it. Took me 34 years to find this gem ❤❤❤ better late..
This is by far, one of her most lively video productions, where Rickie actually seems to be having fun. Great album, "Flying Cowboys". Perhaps one of her best creations and collabs w/ an able assist from Walter Becker.
i heard this song on a train in 1990. Had no idea who sang it or the title. I only remembered the chorus and the music.. been searching for it since then.. and tonight i found it.. thank you Song Search.. just love this gem of a song!!
On this day in 1989 {October 7th} Rickie Lee Jones performed "Satellites" on the NBC-TV program 'Saturday Night Live'... The song reached #23 on Billboard's Alternative Singles chart... In 1999 when the cable channel "VH-1" aired their special 'The 100 Greatest Women of Rock' she was ranked at #30...
The moment I saw Rickie on Saturday Night Live in 1979, I fell in love with her. I've lost count how many times I saw her live. The last time I finally asked her for an autograph. It's tattooed on my left shoulder.
I just recently heard "Chuck E's In Love" on the radio. I am Gen X and have a great deal of love and respect for all of the music that's gone through my ears and into my brain so I remember a HUGE AMOUNT of most. I didn't remember this song. I didn't recall this from MTv or VH1 and I graduated from high school in 1989. All that said. It struck me how far ahead of her time Rickie Lee Jones was. This song could easily be covered by some little pop tart and it would EASILY go platinum in a week. You know I am right. Neat song!
Couple of cool little notes about "Chuck E..." It was a hit in the middle of the Disco era and went top five in a week where all the other songs were Disco hits. That week, all the top five were women for the first time in Billboard history on the Hot 100. Lol- Rickie Lee and Donna Summer ruled the charts together!
This song & Last chance Texaco, enough said puts me in a good mood 😊 I remember when she first came out I seen her @ the Palamino club in north Hollywood! Great shows she was great!
In all of my long years, I have never listened to a song that reminded me of falling in love that one, true time. I have loved almost all music all of my life, like an addiction. I have had heard very few well-sung, absolutely natural, from-the-gut artistry as hers. Listen to ghost train, or perhaps, if you have the patience, the entire album "Flying Cowboys". That'll learn ya.
+Alec M She can go straight to the deepest parts of yer soul. She has such innate sensuality, her squeexe, Tom Waites (for no man) described her as "the sexiest woman in the world".
Seen her @ the Paladium in downtown los Angeles & the Santa Monica civic always good shows 🎉❤ & I'm 66yr's old & still listening 2 her! Just 1 of my many female singers she's my favorites!
First time I heard this was like a homecoming--literally. Kalamazoo, MI. Graduated from Western Michigan University, and the whole time there never went more than two weeks without dropping in to Boogie Records on Michigan Ave. I left so much money in that place--the owner was always turning me on to bootleg cassettes of live performances, and I still have ones of Pat Metheny, Heart and Bob Seger that were recorded on chromium dioxide cassette tapes and still sound pretty darned good even at 40-45 years old. (Were you a Maxell or TDK fan?) In 1988 I started dating this woman who lived upstairs from me in my apartment building. She was a Central Michigan grad (WMU's arch-rival) and in 1989 we decided to go to the CMU-WMU football game, which was WMU's homecoming. I hadn't been back there in five or six years, and after the game was over I said, "We HAVE to go to Boogie Records." We did, and while we were browsing the record bins a song came on over the store's stereo system. We looked at each other and said "Who is THIS?" We went up to the counter where they always displayed the album cover of whatever was currently playing. It was 'Flying Cowboys' and we were hearing 'Satellites'. We knew her just as the "Chuck E.'s in Love" singer, but this was something different. I even said, "That sounds like Dean Parks" on guitar and it is. I knew him from his work with Manhattan Transfer. We both walked out with a copy. Oh--I don't remember the score, but CMU thrashed WMU. When I next went back about ten years later (I was now married to that woman from upstairs), Boogie Records was gone, and with it, so was my most compelling reason for visiting Kalamazoo.
I always think of my best female friend when I hear this song. We were besties in high school in the 80s. We were twinned in a fugitive mind. The closeness we shared has no words, but the essence is captured in this enigmatic song.
Flying cowboys is one of those albums that just keeps growing on me, i never tire of listening to it, its good at home or in the car, straight or................, my copy is worn to digital bits
I hope so! She deserves it so much. She's obviusly been through a lot and had to deal with insecurity and shyness when she was younger. Her music is made of gold. And the moon is, too. :)
Pretty girl, beautiful harmonies, unintelligible lyrics. I came here while watching an old "WKRP in Cincinnati" episode with a poster of Rickie Lee Jones in the background.
How is it possibly that such a wonderfully lyrical song recorded by such a wonderfully and exceptionally lyrical human being only has a thousand likes - it says a lot about our current predicament. Fuck.
All this time, for years i've heard this song. And i could never find who sang. After extensive research and many failed "Shazam" uploads, i am relieved to finally know what she is actually saying.....Satellites. All this time i thought she said "Salads".
Rickie - great song, great video. lets get some more of your original music like this on youtube, please! not al these bootlegs! a great part of your recordings are in the production!! thanks for all the great music over the years!!

Joe Gomez Rickie, indeed... I'm an LA teen, who grew up really too fast... Rickie unknowingly wrote about people I mixed with in the motel rooms and in the streets of LA. Much like her songs, but, that came from her own experiences, and oddly "WEST SIDE STORY"... She captivated me, and made me cry with her debut album and from then on... Rickie's an artist's artist!! She's genius, her musicality comes from a very deep place. I'm grateful to have caught the ride from 1979. When I first heard the single on the radio of "Chuck E's In Love", I said "Oh God, she was what was missing!" I'm 54 years old now. I really think the recording industry ripped her off.. I'm from the big City of Angels... Where every music buff owned at least the Debut and "Pirates", and then the diehards like me bought them all... Oh well.... Just felt like sharing. Her voice pierces with a beautiful cry in it. Then creeps in a window like an innapropriate voyeur, listening to a mother settling a child down with a lullaluby. Or a woman singing softly to her lover... The writing is so unique. We used to drive to Palm Springs and listen to "Flying Cowboys"... It was a perfect soundtrack. I saw her at the Wiltern Theater at the time of the "Flying Cowboys" album. A couple was entertaining a Chinese couple, on their two week business trip. They had only heard "Chuck E's In Love". And loved it from 10 years before, but nothing else from Rickie. Both, the Chinese husband and wife were in tears. They were blown away by Rickie's artistry. They were wiping the tears from their eyes, after her show completed, and they said, "How come her music isn't being played on American radio, it's so beautiful!!!" As if saying what is being played on American radio was sub-par.. Me and my friends just looked at each other. Because we had once asked ourselves that question long ago... Even Ghostyhead had a special mixing of "Firewalker" that made every album endeavor worthwhile for me... yes, even Ghostyhead... ua-cam.com/video/7yb2sO_Lhus/v-deo.html
RICKIE LEE.......I'VE BEEN SO IN LOVE WITH YOUR MIND SINCE THE 80's.....AN EX-THUG-LONER-LIKE ME.....LAST CHANCE TEXACO HAS BEEN MY EARGASM MORE TIMES THAN I SHOULD ADMIT........I -NEED- TO THANK YOU FOR THE LIGHT THAT INSPIRES YOU....UNDOUBTEDLY ITS GOD..MIXED WITH A LITTLE DEEP BREATH SIGH THAT LIGHTING CNDLES ALONE IN A WORLD THAT CANT TEACH THE LOVE IT DOESNT HAVE.......SEE WHY I HAVE TO THANK YOU? I LOVE YOU RICKIE.
We were born forever We are twinned in a fugitive mind Friends should stay together and Light the world with the fugitive kind So you keep talking in many languages Telling us the way you feel Don't stop confiding in the road you're on Don't quit, you're walking satellites Walking satellites She laughs satellites A room filled with satellites Ah, walking satellites We were born forever Tunneled into the fugitive night Friends must stay together Code the world with the fugitive light I just saw you walking Ice was reading fortunes by the moonlight Casting runes on the rooftops and alleys You'll never read it more than you will tonight So you keep talking in many languages Telling us the way you feel Don't stop confiding in the road you're on Don't quit, you're walking satellites Walking satellites She laughs satellites A room filled with satellites Ah, walking satellites
Heard this song while shopping at Walgreens today and boy this takes me back. I haven't heard this song in years. Memories of watching VH-1 Sunday Morning when they play music videos like this one.
About a yr ago Mopeing through a Home Depot I hate shopping of any kind this song came creeping in the back of my(radio) head I smiled to myself then realized it was playing in the store I was dancing in my head
Yooooo this is crazy😭💜 I seen this album somewhere and for some reason I got curious to check her out and now it's been a while since I've heard this song almost 6 years😭😭😭 fuckkk time flies
An a attractive lady and a nice singing voice. I really do hope one day you will hear Ricky Lee Jones music in space. I hope future satelites pick it up. Ricky Lee Jones is a talented singer songwriter.
She is one of 10K talented people female artists in Trumpland. I was a big fan, but it comes down to who’s willing to produce you. If David Gray (or Annie Lennox) didn’t meet Dave Stewart they’d be lost in a crowd. Annie is still married to Dave so assume he’s okay. Unfortunately people like Harvey Weinstein get to choose who can be female stars in movies or TV. An unfortunate fact. That being said, it’s a great album
REMINDS ME OF A FEMALE " BOB SEEGER" & "SILVER BULLET". HUGE VOICE, RAW EBBING, FLOWING EMOTION: OH SO KOOL MUSICIANS, SOULFUL LYRICS, SOARING FANTASY RIDE.{HER VOICE IS UP THERE W/THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME}(INMYOWNHUMBLEOPINION}
That song you hear at multiple grocery stores that it becomes such an earworm that you want to know what the song is called and who sang it but can't because the lyrics are drowned out by multiple people complaining about coupons.
First heard it when I was 13 or 14yrs old.. Im 37 now... Ive just always LOVED this track...!! I want to get ahold of the SNL performance of this tune!! ThANKSS for posting this!! :-)
Just got back from her concert here in Ohio about an hour ago, (after a two hour drive back.) It was incredible, she's a pure artist and her back up band was really good. The drummer you could tell was a classically trained jazz drummer. It's kind of surreal watching this because i just saw her 3 hours ago. Her voice has hardly changed at all. I recommend that if you have the chance to see her, you should!
At the 2 minute mark, the little girl produces the....... "Mannaz" rune, means, The Self, Hummanity, Support! Rickie sings of the...... "Isa" rune, meaning, Ice, Standstill, patience. HOW WONDWEFUL

Thank you, Ms. Jones.
I forgot how much I love her
*To be honest Ricki Lee Jones is one of the most UNDERRATED artists in our time*
Not in my house
@@elizabethmcleod246 I didn't say you as you're the type that appreciates REAL TALENT
@@NDR-hn3ue Thanks. How do you know that about me though?
@@elizabethmcleod246 I was being tongue and cheek not personal sorry for any confusion
@@NDR-hn3ue No worries. I have been lucky enough to see Ricki Lee Jones 3 times in Vancouver, Canada. 1981, 1985, 2015. I adore her music.
The whole Flying Cowboys album is just wonderful.
My fave…
Exactly.
I love this. So well said!!

Nice comment.
There is no-one like her. She is an American Treasure!

You nailed it. She is a unique writer, performer and person.
She is a treasure for all. Not just America.
Her harmonies with her own lead vocals are some of the most sublime ever recorded. Juke Box Fury blows me away too.
Seconded
Omg these two songs are my favorite
Incredible how Walter Becker's contribution as a producer is tangible here. The soprano sax was his idea and mix perfectly with the song. Great, great work.
I didn't know he produced this! Thanks for telling us. I think he was incredibly gifted. I worship Steely Dan.
This song wouldn't be too out of place in his 1994 album 11 Tracks of Whack.
Even her happy songs make me cry.
RIP Walter. What a wonderful, organic and very real art you created with Rickie.
This song seems timeless. It's always excellent. Listening to it due to Walter Becker's passing. We are losing talented musicians that are not being replaced. Technology has replaced musicianship. It's a shame.

We were born forever
We are twinned in a fugitive mind
Friends should stay together and
Light the world with the fugitive kind
So you keep talking in many languages
Telling us the way you feel
Don't stop confiding in the road you're on
Don't quit, you're walking satellites
Walking satellites
She laughs satellites
A room filled with satellites
Ah, walking satellites
We were born forever
Tunneled into the fugitive night
Friends must stay together
Code the world with the fugitive light
I just saw you walking
Ice was reading fortunes by the moonlight
Casting runes on the rooftops and alleys
You'll never read it more than you will tonight
So you keep talking in many languages
Telling us the way you feel
Don't stop confiding in the road you're on
Don't quit, you're walking satellites
Walking satellites
She laughs satellites
A room filled with satellites
Ah, walking satellites
Heard this song while shopping at Walgreens today and boy this takes me back. I haven't heard this song in years. Memories of watching VH-1 Sunday Morning when they play music videos like this one.
My favorite RLJ album since it's release.
Saw her in concert twice, one had a horn section, the other was just 3 piece. Both were great shows.
Mopeing through
a Home Depot
I hate shopping of any kind
this song came creeping in the back of my(radio) head
I smiled to myself
then realized it was playing in the store
I was dancing in my head
Howed you--tube know eye needed this song now? My play list with Rickie Lee. Robots are taking over the world. Really, they are
Ran by this...totally forgot about this jewel.
Yooooo this is crazy😭💜 I seen this album somewhere and for some reason I got curious to check her out and now it's been a while since I've heard this song almost 6 years😭😭😭 fuckkk time flies
I think this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. What else is there to say?
An a attractive lady and a nice singing voice. I really do hope one day you will hear Ricky Lee Jones music in space. I hope future satelites pick it up. Ricky Lee Jones is a talented singer songwriter.
Gorgeous
Waiting for your comeback Rickie.... amazing... all your stuff.
Agreed on the Walter Becker comment. Haven’t seen this in 25 (?) years. Well produced
Extraordinária Rickie Lee. As always.
My favorite song and one of my favorite preformers, Rickie is first rate! amazing woman that defies labels and catagories.
REMINDS ME OF A FEMALE " BOB SEEGER" & "SILVER BULLET". HUGE VOICE, RAW EBBING, FLOWING EMOTION: OH SO KOOL MUSICIANS, SOULFUL LYRICS, SOARING FANTASY RIDE.{HER VOICE IS UP THERE W/THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME}(INMYOWNHUMBLEOPINION}
That song you hear at multiple grocery stores that it becomes such an earworm that you want to know what the song is called and who sang it but can't because the lyrics are drowned out by multiple people complaining about coupons.
ha!
Beautiful tune. Makes me smile and feel quite positive about stuff. Nice.
Forgot about this song, so good! Thanks
Love the clarinet in this song, take a bow son.
That's actually Bob Sheppard on soprano saxophone, not clarinet.
rickie lee- soul sister walking in heavens's light
First heard it when I was 13 or 14yrs old.. Im 37 now... Ive just always LOVED this track...!!
I want to get ahold of the SNL performance of this tune!! ThANKSS for posting this!! :-)
Shalom Much love ❤️ Thank you ❤
Just got back from her concert here in Ohio about an hour ago, (after a two hour drive back.) It was incredible, she's a pure artist and her back up band was really good. The drummer you could tell was a classically trained jazz drummer. It's kind of surreal watching this because i just saw her 3 hours ago. Her voice has hardly changed at all. I recommend that if you have the chance to see her, you should!
Kohls Dept. store LOVES playing this song!
Casting runes on rooftops and alleys
RLJ is one of the reasons I’m still alive

+trww2 Thanks for posting the lyrics. I've always liked this song, even though I didn't know the words!
Never understood her lyrics. Too deep
