Yeah, I had no idea this existed but being a Bowie fan and a Rickie fan came across it... and then went "Ohmylordy, Brian Setzer... and is that Syd Straw?!?"
With musical diversity, and a cover of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel", which was originally planned to be the title track for the Oscar-winning film Boys Don't Cry. Before his death David Bowie was quoted as saying that this version was his favorite cover of his work.
Damn, THIS is who sings “Rebel Rebel” on “Boys Don’t Cry” trailer on Amazon!! Nobody can figure out who it is as far as I’ve been able to find via search. You would almost have to know the band/singer name to find it even though the band/singer is who you are trying to find. I’m exhausted now from listening to almost every female cover of Rebel Rebel out there! Maybe this post will show in search now so everyone else, who haven’t given up, can find it.
I'm sure Mr David Bowie would be resting peacefully knowing Rickie-Lee Jones is doing his work proud, I can almost imagine him joining in with tis amazing work by our favourite Lady RLJ.
I knew Rickie was a consummate artist the first time she appeared on The Tonight Show with her red beret. Not only is she a treasure, she is an inspiration.
Ooh, I've been lovin' Ricky since her first hit, 'Chuck E's In Love', way way back in, what, '77 ?? Love finding this old footage! She is one-of-a-kind, so unique, so original, so uncompromising in her artistry! And I've still got her first 3 vinyl albums.
Dig this, a lot!! Got here tracking Nathan Larson, (scored Boys Don't Cry) the tremendously underappreciated guitarist of DC's finest - Shudder To Think. You like remakes that are remade? Check Shudder's rendition of So Into You... 🥃🌷😊
Sexy and very nice. Rickie shows class. If you don´t like it, listen to Bowies version. The thing with UA-cam is that´s there is something for everyone.
Thanks for the info Coventry112! I see Jay Leno, so it must have been the Tonight show, but was this an impromptu gathering of serious talent just for this show or was this a tour introduction? Additionally, when was this I wonder?
WHEN AND WHERE WAS THIS PERFORMED? ALSO, WHO IS THE FEMALE BACK UP SINGER? I RECOGNIZE BRIAN SETZER ON GUITAR AND THE GUT BASS PLAYER BUT THATS ALL. GREAT VERSION OF THIS CLASSIC TUNE...GOOD POST, THANKS!
Sorry, but she can't sing. Weeeeeek voice. Lucky to be working with such great material. She does a nice job with her handling of the acoustic. And she's overwhelmed by/outsung by her backup.
I've loved her since the first time I ever heard her. Can't get enough of her.
Holy crap. Not only Brian Setzer but Syd Straw on background vocals.
who's the woman?

She played it for me as a birthday request at an outdoor concert in Boone, NC, a few years ago. Love her version.
Rickie Lee Jones looks so pretty

Excellent cover. Vocal, groove, all is perfect. Rickie is the best❤
I just discovered she was the voice over on the Orb's "fluffy little clouds"
during the years....she s been amazing, thanks for having such a wonderful musical heritage in her, and her own awesome songs.
ça me fait tellement plaisir de la voir reprendre cette chanson là .. Deux amours de jeunesse Rickie et David :)
a beautiful woman and a somewhat restained Brian Setzer doing a top Bowie song just amazing
Very young Brian Setzer. Restrained but that was still some fine playing.

Great version, and Bowie's all time favorite cover.

Hello legs.
Mmmm, not sure about this.
looks rough
What makes one of the best rockabilly guitarists in history involved in that mediocrity?
Sorry, but she can't sing. Weeeeeek voice. Lucky to be working with such great material. She does a nice job with her handling of the acoustic. And she's overwhelmed by/outsung by her backup.
U sound snobby and ignorant in music.
I'm sorry for you....
Who on earth told her this was a good idea??
+jvm22187 no idea have you?
+jvm22187 Maybe Bowie himself. This is from 1993, you know.
As a fan of Rickie Lee Jones and Brian Setzer I can only say - This is shit. Fuck people, what were you thinking??
+Spud O'Doom I thought this was a great cover!
As a fan of Ricki Lee Jones and respect for Brian Setzer
