Man I miss the 80's. Growing up as a kid in the 80's I want to go back and stay there. Life was 1000x better then than it is now. Still had my mom and dad and all my brothers. And I had the absolute biggest crush on this girl. I would watch MTV for hours just waiting to see this video
Born in the 80s, grew up mostly in the early 90s, we did have the best childhood. The only “technology” we had was cable tv, and very early dial up “internet” which was locally run message boards and only text. My friends and I rode out bikes all summer, played with walkie-talkies, ran lemonade stands, climbed trees, make picnics, played outside til the street lights came on and mom was calling for us to come in. You couldn’t pay me to be a kid today.

I think of this so often! I loved the '80s, it was magical to grow up then. Was it perfect? Nope. I struggle to look past my brain's normal-reflex to see only the best...& I do see the things I'd never want to experience again, like bullies & Dad's drinking. But God, how the GOOD overpowered the Bad! I will always miss that. Always.

I'm crying uncontrollably right now. I was born 1971. This music (80's) is life. I watched my wife and mother pass away just a month apart from each other in 2013. Then my oldest brother lost his father, then his oldest son, and finally he himself. And now my own health is failing. I find comfort on coming on youtube to listen to the 80's music I grew up on, although it can make me tear up. I long for the old days when life was so much more simple and happy.
Two months ago i scape from death. Please dont give up. I remember every doctors treat me in hospital. And i ask to God to still live. Back to fight my friend. Dont stop to fight.
The most beautiful song I ever heard; written about something as dark as addiction and death. Only this artist could sing it with so much delicate harmony and sweetness. Long Live 80's awesome music and singers of that era.
Oh is that what it's about? My first impression when I looked up the lyrics was a relationship gone bad or abusive even, but I like this meaning better actually cuz it's more relatable (cuz addiction can be anything, doesn't automatically mean substance abuse)
I'm thinking Depeche mode..Everything counts? The grabbing hands grab all they can, all for themselves, after all its a competitive world, everything counts in large amounts.
Yup. '89 was a strange year in music. It was transitioning to the 90s sound. Most of the music in '89 was awful. Then there were bright spots of good songs like this that used a different way to make good music.
Sorry for your loss Chester, music is the balm for your soul and I'm glad you are getting solace from martika and other music, ❤ and peace pal take care,,,,,,,,,🙏🙏
Christa Varrone Sorry 70s kid here, my first music was watching Partridge Family TV Show 1970 -1974. I was kinda a ladies man in grade school the girls loved my IRISH Freckels on my face. Some kids wernt very nice they said is your whole Family a bunch of DRUNKS. That is kinda True most people think all IRISH are DRUNKS. I guess us IRISH are a little weird some born with Red Hair & Freckels covering our whole Body. Its funny Freckels disappear from our face but not the body. IRISH FOLKLORE says we get our Freckels from the Sun. That makes no sense IRISH Skin Burns easily in the sun. Us O"GRADY boys most have been good looking, these girls kept coming to our house some times right after school. Too bad only 8-9 year olds. For some reason my girlfriends called me James instead of Jim or Jimmy. I really liked my Rock N Roll Music ROLLING Stones Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers Lynyrd Skynyrd. I liked how those 70s girls had the hots for those Long Hair Rock Stars. Heres a few corny IRISH sayings I AM A LEPRECHAUN I DONT DATE HUMANS, YOU DONT SCARE ME I WAS RAISED BY AN IRISH MOTHER. AN IRISH GIRL WITHOUT FRECKELS IS LIKE A SKY WITHOUT STARS. AN IRISH GIRL IS A GUYS BEST DRINKING BUDDY. WARNING I MAY BE PRONE TO SHENANIGANS & MALARKEY. REDHEAD IRISH GIRLS ARE EXTRA FIESTY IN THE BEDROOM. MAY THE LUCK OF THE IRISH BE WITH YOU. KISS ME IM IRISH NO REALLY IM IRISH. PARENTS were crazy having 10 IRISH Kids. Not only that Mom side gave us kids 16 first cousins. IRISH Familys are known for having lots of kids. Too Bad ST PATRICKS PARADE is cancelled because of that Corona Virus. My Family turned out all right we all new our limits with Alcohol. Kinda funny I took a liken to Partridge Family Music at 8 years old. Some of those 70s concerts were crazy because of very little Security, even indoor concerts were bad. Then again how do you control 75,000 fans. Freckels in IRELAND are called ANGEL KISSES. Sorry about all IRISH Stuff Im just Proud of my IRISH HEARITAGE. RIP DAVID CASSIDY

I keep coming back to these songs from my younger days. Getting old sucks, but our music sure as hell didn’t. All genres back then were awesome. Rock, pop, r&b, you name it. True artistry lives on.
This song has a lot of emotions for me….. my brother battled addiction for over 30 years and in 2021 weeks after he turned 50 lost the battle to drugs…. But I know he is at peace!!! Love you Matthew!

Walter Velarde although I would give a couple of arms and legs to grow up in that same decade, having all these legendary tunes in my pocket is a true gift of technology. Wish I was born earlier but still proud to be a millennial! Seriously you're a lucky bastard never forget that buddy
I don't understand how some lesser hits are played a lot on the radio today, and others are forgotten. This was a #1 hit in 1989, yet I can't even remember the last time I heard it on the radio.
Me either...it just shows me how cookie cutter radio has become....the light rock station in St. Louis 102.5 literally plays the same stuff everyday when I take my daughter to school...if i hear Old Time Rock and Roll or Total Eclipse Of The Heart much more...i am gonna lose it!
Reminds me of my wife. She died October 22, 2018 at only the age of 46. So horribly sad after all she was battling in overcoming cancer, anemia, and epstein-barr diseases. This song reminds me of how we all fall down in grief of loved ones who have died and reminds us of our own mortality despite the vibrance and optimism of our youth. Life is precious. Loved ones and family are precious! Cherish the love before we all fall down like toy soldiers!
Wow man, sorry to hear that, man I feel your pain, she passed on my parents birthday, they were the same age, they were soul mates, lost Mom last year, and dad 4 years ago, hang in there man, God bless
I was born in 1980. I was a young kid when this song came out. My sister use to pop in a VHS tape and record MTV videos, hoping this song would play. When it did, that whole VHS tape was her and she would listen to this song over and over. I hated it but here I am, 32 years later, listening to this song, and going back to a happier time in life. Love the 80s.
Great story similar to mine. But in my story, I was sitting in front of the TV and had the tape. Now, many years later, I still feel that moment. The tape itself got lost, but whenever I have a bad moment. I use this "tape" so called internet and the sun comes back
It's my go to get serious about owning your story jam. It's too real but I'm ready. We ARE toy soldiers cause that's not real baby but you still love them. Happy Valentine's Day stranger. Stay sober
All 80's music is a treasure. I remember staying up late to watch Friday Night Videos. Then an underground music video showcase on a UHF channel in Chicago. I lived outside the country for 10 years. I always loved returning during Christmas and hearing new sounds. Living abroad exposed me to experiences my American peers couldn't imagine. It shaped me into a person that sees people as people not labels. Many Americans can benefit from that same experience today. Now, with that said. I believe Charli XCX's Boom Clap song borrowed from Toy Soldiers. They may not admit it. But the abstract lyrics and chorus timing are similar elements with a faster tempo. I wouldn't be surprised if she listened to Toy Soldiers and said. "Hey I want a to make a song like that." in her English accent. Of course this is my opinion. You say you don't know another song like this. It's likely you do but can't remember. Because I didn't recall Toy Soldiers until I happened upon it again. I want to share 2 songs that I think will have you feeling some intense emotions. Both are from the same artist. If you're not used to listening to this genre. Give it chance, and maybe it will be best to listen the first time with good headphones. Don't listen on your laptop speakers unless they are high quality. I'm not taking anything away from Toy Soldiers. I love music, any kind of music. Oh, and be careful with the first song. It might scare you at the beginning lol. @@DJacksonAfter thanks for remembering Friday Night Videos. For all us kids who couldn't afford cable or satellite. Used to be luxury. Your family has CABLE? I've got chips and soda!
George Workout Ⓥ Tell me about it. When is the last time they made a tv show about a functional family? Now every show seems to be 30-50something single people living in the city dealing with depressing problems and not appearing to be happy people. Where do people get the warm/fuzzy feeling of watching a family or close group of friends deal with life like in all the shows from the 80s?
Came out in 88, became super popular in 89. It was on the radio all the time! I was 17, hadn't had my license very long. I was driving my dad's 67 Ford truck all over Jacksonville FL, worked during the day for a lawn company. Some great memories!
Thanks for the details, Paul. Heard this often in my youth, but never knew who sung it until now. My husband is not a big help, seems British charts in the 80s had not all big american songs like we (Germany) did. We still find songs he's never heard of. So glad Google recognized my humming ;)
Back in the days of these types of artists, these songs TOOK YOU SOMEWHERE. Like, with the videos giving you imagery, the passion in the singer's eyes, the uplifting melodies... There was a safety in it all. A wonder and discovery of the world around you. All things were new. Ideas were exciting. We felt more one with others and the world. You could buy these albums and get completely lost in these songs, bc there was no internet or phones or political bullsh*t to distract you. You were actually free to ENJOY things. It was music that went deep into your soul and tickled it. You sung along and felt totally FREE. Music today can nowhere near do this anymore.
I graduated High School in 1989 and remember this song vividly. I didn't realize it then but the 80's was a magical decade and a certain innocence and simplicity has been lost since then. When I listen to these old songs I'm instantly transported back in time, and to be honest with you it depresses me somewhat because there is not going back.
Everyone thinks that of the years they were in high school. Nothing anymore special about the 80's than any other decade you just remember it more fondly.
This song is transcendent. It has a quality that lifts it above the run of the mill pop tune. The feeling that comes through in the lyrics, and the heart and soul Martika puts into it is really special. Thank you.
It can be both, but audio versions could be even stronger if you never watched a video version of a song, on the radio for example. (imagination is wilder)
Step by step Heart to heart Left, right, left We all fall down Like toy soldiers It wasn't my intention to mislead you It never should have been this way What can I say? It's true, I did extend the invitation I never knew how long you'd stay When you hear temptation call It's your heart that takes, takes the fall (Won't you come out and play with me?) Step by step Heart to heart (heart to heart) Left, right, left We all fall down (we all fall down) Like toy soldiers Bit by bit (bit by bit) Torn apart (torn apart) We never win But the battle wages on For toy soldiers It's getting hard to wake up in the morning (morning) My head is spinning constantly How can it be? (how can it be?) How could I be so blind to this addiction? If I don't stop, the next one's gonna be me Only emptiness remains It replaces all, all the pain (Won't you come out and play with me?) Step by step Heart to heart (heart to heart) Left, right, left We all fall down (we all fall down) Like toy soldiers Bit by bit (bit by bit) Torn apart (torn apart) We never win But the battle wages on For toy soldiers We never win Oh, only emptiness remains (ah) It replaces all, all the pain (Won't you come out and play with me?) I remember being a child and waking up one morning, the soft sunlight dappled on my face through the tree just outside my bedroom window, with this song playing quietly on the small radio I kept next to my bed. It was the first time I ever heard it and there was something about it that immediately stood out to me. I don't remember ever hearing it again on the radio after that and it wasn't long before we moved across state and the 80s ended. In a way, this song symbolizes not just that moment but an entire era, lost to the sands of time and kept only in bittersweet memory.
phubans I heard it one day in 1996 on my radio when I woke up. It was when I lived in Montana. I only lived there 4 years, but I feel the same as you. It was the first time and last I heard it, but I never forgot it. There was something special about it.
phubans , I can relate. This song was popular in mid to late 1989 , about the time my parents moved me thousands of miles. I was 16. Not across the state, but across the country. So, yes it takes on a double meaning and a sadness. The end of the 80s and in essence, my childhood home. Thanks for sharing.

I've been thinking on the phenomenon that was and still is, The 80's. As it was my time just like everyone else on here and around the world. I have only just come to a realisation and this is it. For most of us it was a time of our youth, of hope. Of better days to come and great times we were living. Like me, many others had rough times in our childhood. Whether family dramas, family breakdowns, like mine. Neglect, abuse, and so many other things. So my idea is this: Let us band together, and while living in the present, bring back that optimism and joyous hope we lived through. That so much of the music we still love showed us. Let's keep this alive in how we live, how we love, how we celebrate and how we vote too. Today the world is more divisive than ever before. Let's work to end this. In the true spirit of The 80's, let's come together and celebrate something deeper and more profound than the next craze or social media billionaire. Our children's very existence depends on it.
One of my favorite 80's songs.. the 80s was the best of times❤ we actually went outside to meet up with our friends at the Parks or meet at the beach.. it was beautiful with no internet or cell phones.. people that were born in the past 20 years will never understand how great the 80s really were.... I'm blessed I'm still listening to that music everyday❤❤❤❤
Ture, BUT if I had had all that stuff we have today, it would have been pure MAGIC. Don't ever underestimate the whole knowledge and possibilities we have at our fingertips nowadays! ✌
The song is still huge but a-ha became a better band with better songs over the years, especially when the 80's were over. I just got tired of that song
There's just this unique way that some 80s songs hit you, and this is one of them. In addition to the message, I'm not sure whether it's the visuals or the way the songs were produced back then, but it just grips you in a way that no other era does.
This song embodies pain and emotion plus the fact that the chorus is sung by children as well as some of the synth sounds add a very special atmosphere of innocence. It's sad that Martika didnt had much success after "Toy Soldiers" but she will be forever remembered for it. Truly a very special song.
She did. Everything now is just overblown and generic. Don't worry, we felt this at the time. There is just too much now. Over exposure and stimulation.
Its February 2023 and i hope that Martika knows how relevant her song is still and that it still makes me tear up every time I hear her haunting vocals on it.
Post your comments tell our stories. The Power is Truth. Addiction is to cover and deny. I know it's a disease but it hurts everyone it touches. Stay strong
As a young teen in the mid 80s these songs stir such a deep emotional feeling within my heart and soul. Listening to this brings back all those lonely feelings of a teen trying to figure out life and all the emotions we experience as we grow up. Glad to have lived in a time when people lived and cared about each other.
Her vocals are just so beautiful. Its honestly mesmerizing. I feel like this was before audio enhancements made music easy too....its just raw soul and talent. Idunno how I never heard this growing up but wow. Im blown away
The good ol' days for music and movies. The 80's and part of the 90's were THE best times of my life. We were young, healthy and full of life and life was GOOD. Today I have Parkinson's and my time is limited. Enjoy life while you have it.

Feel your pain m a 70's kid n lost mom way to young from drinking😔
You are special.
❤️
Very true born 72 wish I could go back to the 80's and stay there. Oh just thinking about them old days Jesus why cant it be like back then
The most beautiful song I ever heard; written about something as dark as addiction and death.
Only this artist could sing it with so much delicate harmony and sweetness.
Long Live 80's awesome music and singers of that era.
Are those "Deutsche Bund-Mädels?
Most nostalgic song of the 80s
Didn’t even realise it was about that. Knew all the words though since I was a kid
Oh is that what it's about? My first impression when I looked up the lyrics was a relationship gone bad or abusive even, but I like this meaning better actually cuz it's more relatable (cuz addiction can be anything, doesn't automatically mean substance abuse)
@@tenshimoon In the video her boyfriend is paying a dealer money for drugs, so in this case the song is about drug addiction.
This song probably has one of the best choruses ever written, it's up there with the best of them.
Written by Martika and her friend Michael Jay. The kids who sang it was Martika's friends from kids incorporated.
I'm thinking Depeche mode..Everything counts?
The grabbing hands grab all they can, all for themselves, after all its a competitive world, everything counts in large amounts.

Another reason to love 80s music. This song Is a rare diamond. Still listening in 2024 and beyond.
Anyone suffering or recovering from addiction can relate to this song! I love it!
I agree with you, bro
I’m listening to Martika Toy Soldiers mid August 2023
Me too,she was my idol so I cut the hair like her,but it wasn't good for me🤣
Always loved this song. Met her in New Orleans
The way MARTIKA expressed herself in the video is perfect and the body language made it that more meaningful !!! She ACED this video!!
Darn shame her husband held her back. This was the only real hit she had before he dominated everything about her life
I agree. She made me find these traits in girls after this.....lol
Yup. '89 was a strange year in music. It was transitioning to the 90s sound. Most of the music in '89 was awful. Then there were bright spots of good songs like this that used a different way to make good music.
She did
I agree. She also had a Spanish version of it.
One of the greatest classic's ever made, and one that'll never age, still hits the same after all these years. An unforgettable track
😭😭😭😭😭 This is such a power ballad! The singing is just SO beautiful!!!!
My younger brother loved this song, he’s gone now, but he lives again whenever this song plays … 🌈🙏🏻💜. Long live the 80s❣️
Sorry for your loss. Long live the music. ❤️🎵🙏
Thank you.
Long live the 80!

Great decade of music

My favorite two decades!!!
Recalling it right here. Never repeated.
We were blessed to have grown up in the 80s. I was born in 69 so I was a teenager in the 80s and no decade will ever match the awesome music that we had

I don't understand how some lesser hits are played a lot on the radio today, and others are forgotten. This was a #1 hit in 1989, yet I can't even remember the last time I heard it on the radio.

So sorry for your loss, Dave. I hope you find peace.
Your wife may be gone but the memories of her will never go away.

Back when MTV meant Music TeleVision...

Enjoy the musical genius of...

+Sam Holden Me too. It was fun getting exciting about NEW music. Now music is only a nostalgic thing for me since most new stuff is bad or soulless.
Sadly it is also movies TV shows and everything else that is also soulless. Everything is standardized to make money not history :)
Stiff Wit One could say it simply reflects the reality of today(everyone single or divorced), another might speculate that it molds it to be this way.

Came out in 88, became super popular in 89. It was on the radio all the time! I was 17, hadn't had my license very long. I was driving my dad's 67 Ford truck all over Jacksonville FL, worked during the day for a lawn company. Some great memories!
😀 😄
I was 17 too at the time and would belt this song every time it played on the radio. What a great time to be alive!
Thank you.

I love the 80's I see you. I wish we could be united again like we were back then.
I remember being a child and waking up one morning, the soft sunlight dappled on my face through the tree just outside my bedroom window, with this song playing quietly on the small radio I kept next to my bed. It was the first time I ever heard it and there was something about it that immediately stood out to me. I don't remember ever hearing it again on the radio after that and it wasn't long before we moved across state and the 80s ended. In a way, this song symbolizes not just that moment but an entire era, lost to the sands of time and kept only in bittersweet memory.
phubans you have a wonderful way with words. Are you a writer?
I am not a writer by profession but people have told me they enjoy reading what I write. Thank you for being one of those people!
phubans I heard it one day in 1996 on my radio when I woke up.

47 and ditto
Like that for anyone growing up during their teen years
Buena música hermosa me ase recordar cuando tenía 14 años
Nowadays is just soulless pop culture garbage for the most part.
The exception to the rule was the rule back then.
That’s what every generation says.
Happy 50th Birthday Martika

Watching this video makes me so happy that I grew up during this era.
I grew up in the 80s and when this song came out it was instantly a song you knew would last the eons of time.
It was classic then and remains one of the most stirring songs of that period and is still so currently meaningful even now in late 2022,I find it amazing that it has never dated like so many others.
An absolutely soul touching song. Addiction is no game and all the pain that comes with it. To all the ones still fighting the addictions keep fighting and don't let it win.
My daughter is an addict and I am at loss
Luckily it's only nicotine for me. But fetanyl is flooding our country every day killing everyone that touches it. Godspeed.

I first heard this song in 1986 when I was 22. It was at a strip bar in Vancouver. The beautiful stripper was gyrating and slithering to this song.

I just love these 80s synth ballads.... something magical about them. They're in a world apart.

This song is so magical and euphoric, The 80s gave us this
Brings a tear to even a grown man always, remembering the classic magical time of the 80's, without cell phones and the internet !!
brilliant memorys.
Won't you come out and play with me? :-)
And people could survive/endure their lives?!

@christinecasteel6127 Martika Toy Soldiers is my number one favorite song
yea i'm 42, i understand. it was a different world

Ture, BUT if I had had all that stuff we have today, it would have been pure MAGIC. Don't ever underestimate the whole knowledge and possibilities we have at our fingertips nowadays! ✌
I agree 100% with u. 80's was and always will be the best decade ever in every sense
Love the 80s and 90s those days you can’t get back and how I miss it😍.
Back when everyone wasn't offended by everything.

I know right another good song Take On Me by Aha its awesome
The song is still huge but a-ha became a better band with better songs over the years, especially when the 80's were over. I just got tired of that song
Much love from Guam 🇬🇺
There's just this unique way that some 80s songs hit you, and this is one of them. In addition to the message, I'm not sure whether it's the visuals or the way the songs were produced back then, but it just grips you in a way that no other era does.
I agree 100! Love 80s music!
So Truth, since i was 14 the teen girl and the black and white effect always got me till this day!
***** was real!!! And authentic!!!
Absolutely!!!!
Amei em poder ouvi..la novamente foi uma explosão de cousas boas.. Amei de verdades de ouvir esse som com essa meiga voz❤
This song embodies pain and emotion plus the fact that the chorus is sung by children as well as some of the synth sounds add a very special atmosphere of innocence.
It's sad that Martika didnt had much success after "Toy Soldiers" but she will be forever remembered for it. Truly a very special song.
Sometimes one hit is all we need to remember how good the 80s were especially this song, which gave eminem a platform through sampling.
@@aclayton231 that's true. Still i love both of Martika's albums.

One of the young back up singers is a then- 14 year old Fergie
She chose not to proceed with her career in music, a decision we all are to accept...
How come this artist never got the recognition that she deserved? After all these years, I'm only discovering her now.
She did. Everything now is just overblown and generic. Don't worry, we felt this at the time. There is just too much now. Over exposure and stimulation.
Answer: MADONNA
Probably cos we were so utterly spoiled with incredible artists & now music is just rubbish remakes 🤷♀️
Latinas weren't a thing back then.

As a young teen in the mid 80s these songs stir such a deep emotional feeling within my heart and soul. Listening to this brings back all those lonely feelings of a teen trying to figure out life and all the emotions we experience as we grow up. Glad to have lived in a time when people lived and cared about each other.

The good ol' days for music and movies. The 80's and part of the 90's were THE best times of my life. We were young, healthy and full of life and life was GOOD. Today I have Parkinson's and my time is limited. Enjoy life while you have it.
