The 1922 film, still looks brilliant, a beautiful film. Watched it a few weeks ago. For an 102 year old film, what a masterpiece. Love your review of this. One of the great reviewers
I am very excited to see this ! I’m a huge fan of bram stokers book and the movie and also a fan of the old Nasferatu movie , so I’m very excited and Robert Eggers can capture the look .
Like you I'm a Lost Boys, Fright Night etc. fan & rewatch those alot. This one sounds good & getting lost in that atmosphere as I have love for the old Universal Monster movies too. Great cast & hope the Academy will recognize the performances you mentioned, they have left out some great ones! Great review Cody🦇
What I loved the most was how much agency they gave Lily's character in the end. She was given the choice to save those she loved by 'taking one for the team' and she made that choice on her own. Even playing it up more by wearing her wedding dress and telling Olark to drink more, keeping him there until the sun rose. And in her last moment, she let go of Olark and reached out for Thomas. A woman who had very little choices in her life (being possessed, being tied to the bed, being sedated, being thrown out of her friends house) was able to make her own choices in her final moments. Brilliant.
Hey Cody, have you seen Shadow of the Vampire (2000)? It is hilarious, and dark with some artsyness from E. Elias Mehige. Nicholas Cage produced it. A concept film where Willem Dafoe plays Max Shrek (who is a REAL vampire). John Malkovitch plays F.W. Murnau who is so fanatically dedicated to making this terrifying film that he will sacrifice his cast and crew to an actual vampire. A bit dark comedy, a bit found footage, a bit mad genious film. And a bunch of great character actors in great roles, and I think Dafoe was nominated for an Oscar in this role.
Seeing Dafoe in that movie is what got me excited about him playing the Green Goblin for 2002 Spider-man….then they put him in the power ranger suit. WTF??
Crazy how Rose Depp's 2023 -2024 swings from HBO's The Idol, which was universally thrashed as an epic career ending bomb to Egger's Nosferatu that's, so far, being hailed as positively amazing, along with Oscar buzz for her performance.
I was a bit surprised you didn’t mention the musical score for the new movie, Cody. Robin Carolan, who-wrote the music for The Northman is probably one of the main reasons why I wanna see the film even more. I’ve been listening to it non stop since it was released and part of it kind of gives me ideas on what I’ll be seeing on film once I go see it and hear it on the big screen. It’s definitely suspenseful, ominous and creepy but also knows when to be haunting, beautiful and romantic sounding at times. The music reminded me a lot of Nosferatu (1922), Salem’s Lot (both 1979 and 2024 films), Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Shining, Insidious, The Nun, The Omen and The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
Great review as always ! Would love to see you do a ranking of all four Nosferatu movies. ( the 1922 one, the 1979 one, the 1988 italian sequel to the 1979 one, and the new one )
Coppola's Dracula is like succumbing to desire. This Nosferatu is like succumbing to despair. It is still very much about the vampire as an intoxicating force, but it is not sexy or romantic. It is intoxicating in the same way that grief and depression can suck you in. It is incredibly compelling, with stunning visuals and engrossing sound design especially around the Count.
I loved Abigail as well. I don’t think it’s gotten the love it deserves. I think you and I are about the same on this movie. Lilly Rose deserves a lot of praise. She did a hell of a job.
I am a big fan of Bram Stoker’s book and the “eternal lust,” possessiveness, psychological, and supernatural manipulation that Dracula/Nosforatu has for the main female character has me screaming YES! Hoping the count has a big mustache too! I would do the Leo point whistle in the theater.
It's my personal favorite of Eggers' movies, but Nosferatu is a close second. It's the movie that really opened my eyes to how great of an actor Robert Pattinson really is.
Now Eggers needs to remake the Original Phantom Of The Opera!!!! Im the biggest Nosferatu fan ever since a kid but i think the greatest silent horror film is POTO Btw , I love the new Nosferatu film & Shadow Of The Vampire and the 1979's Nosferatu but the original is still way more dream like compared to this movie
This is one of the best BEST reviews I’ve seen. Everyone is hyping it up. I like how you said it’s not essentially scary. Now I feel a bit disappointed bc of the opening scene. I had high hopes for this film. Mhm we’ll see
Just got out of the theater from seeing Nosferatu. Eggers is one of my favorite directors and I loved all of his films so far. This definitely warrants a rewatch but I enjoyed it. I loved the dark approach to his version of the story. the ending was not what I was expecting, but I think it works well. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was what you pointed out about the design of Orlock. That being said, this film was visually a masterpiece. The acting was great and the tone was great as well. Looking forward to a rewatch at home.
@@KatLadyFLNot sure you're going crazy😂 The Northman was just plain bad to me. The Witch is a horror classic, The Lighthouse is a classic abomination. The Northman is just, mehhhh.
I’m very excited for this one. I haven’t seen The Lighthouse or The Northman, but I’d like to watch both. I did see The Witch in theaters, though, and I loved it.
I loved The Northman and idk what to even say about the lighthouse except, it gets weird…though I’ve seen people in this comment section alone saying the opposite.
I can't wait to see this movie, I saw the 1922 original a few times and discovered there's a 70s version of the movie. I haven't read the book (yet), but it's interesting that they made The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It made those scenes in the Nosferatu films make a bit more sense contextually
I just finished watching it, and i wish i liked it much more than i did. If i never watch it again, I will be completely ok, and if i had to watch it again, I'll watch it without complaining
This is the film I’ve been waiting all year for. Love Robert Eggers’ style and his previous work (except for The Lighthouse, I haven’t seen the full film yet) and the trailers looked great. Can’t wait to finally watch it. It sounds like it’s right up my alley as a horror fan
Great review & video as always! Liked The Witch a lot & LOVED The Northman so I hope 🤞🏻 I will love this. Haven’t seen The Lighthouse yet. Also can we still expect a November ranked video? Want to know your thoughts on a few movies. Keep it up Cody!
Simple and classic review 👌 ... I cannot wait see 👀🙈 in theaters 🎥 myself ... I watch 👀🙈 reviews before you posted 📫 your review that had no spoilers, they both only said they kept the names, and look, but not a remake ... that is closer to Bram Stroker's Dracula 🧛♂️ 🦇 then original Nosferatu ...
Thank god this is good, I always use Cody to see these reviews of movies before I spend my money. Keep it up man. Hope you had a great thanksgiving and a merry Christmas
What's ironic is that the 'Lost Love' aspect is not part of the original novel. Dan Curtis introduced that in his tv film Dracula, with Jack Palance (taking it from his own Dark Shadows Soap Opera).
I can't get behind the mustache on Count Orlock. It was a distraction for me, especially for a guy who's dead and rotting. Lol Just saw it yesterday and was very happy. It was a beautiful film, and I love Robert Eggers style. It was an amazing romantic, evil movie. I'll definitely buy it watch it again.
I'm one of those who prefers The Witch and The Lighthouse to The Northman. I've heard Nosferatu is basically all three of those combined, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.
LOVED Abigail! Can't wait to sink my teeth into Nosferatu. REAL vampire movies are back! Now, I have faith in Leigh Wannel to give us a good werewolf movie. I'm gonna call this period in horror movies: "After Twilight"
Finally got a chance to see it, wow what a crazy good film. The ending follows very closely to the ending of the original 1922 film. I think if you draw parallels to the Bram stoker Dracula film you’ll be subverted as the first half also follows that formula you quickly realize In the second half that it departed quickly from that film and goes down a much darker road that is ultimately a tragedy. This film has a dark feeling of impending doom. It’s interesting that instead of the classic solution at the end the original 1922 ending pulls that rug out from under you and reminds you this is not a 2024 film with a happy Hollywood ending The acting is impressive, best I’ve seen all year. The vampire shown in this is the scariest version of a vampire I remember seeing in a long time. The plot being more of a tragedy is something that will be tough for people to deal with but that’s also why this version is unique and interesting. The visual language in this film is special. It’s now my favourite version of the Dracula tale
The Northman is my favorite from Eggers and I’m so excited to see this movie Christmas weekend as a couples date hahaha. (Thankfully my girlfriend also likes the Northman) so she’s going in knowing what to expect lol
You were worried they were gonna run out of movies to creepily creep on female "characters" and exploit young actresses ? You were worried she'd magically grow a spine and stop letting them clearly expoit her and her childhood trauma? ... I don't often say this, but you are WAY too optimistic. Don't be silly...they're NEVER going to run out of ways to tell the audience that all the victimzed women secretly wanted to get possessed-r@ped...They're probably going to have a whole new sub-genre now of possession-r@pes. Bc that's just how the Uk and large swaths of the US/Hollywood thinks :). Creating anything new is hard, making actual good movies is hard...but running out of pseudo-p*rnographic archetype movies which impart messed up medieval counter-culture narratives is NEVER hard. What I don't get is everyone's norstalgia for the messed up crap. It's really odd that you guys miss things which make you feel like sh*t to witness. There's this super odd but very strong fascination with the occult and macabre, in the UK especially, and all the parts where the Uk peeps settled in the US. I just think that it went from sorta quirky and cute to 100% dark and fked up in recent years. But no, they're never gonna run out of these archetypes or silly actresses to fill these roles.
@ It’s ironic you say we’re all waiting for her to play “victimized” women. She’s played roles that don’t fit that type, but perhaps you’ve only limited your viewing to her in those roles because you in fact prefer them. Because there was zero mention of a desire for her to play those roles; just a mention of how playing a character so rooted in “pseudo-p*rn” didn’t ruin her chances of becoming more successful as an actress. Your comment is what’s called a Freudian slip. As in, we know now where your interests lie despite your projections of them onto us.
@ That is actually how a Freudian slip works. But of course you don’t want to acknowledge that since that would mean you’ve been successfully called out. God forbid you be wrong. Your poor ego.
Cody, Good to see you man. Your right! The vampire movies are back. Count Orlock is a creepy looking guy. I hear Bill Skarsgard is good as Orlock. This has been going on forever. Movies copying each other. Nosferatu and Dracula. Have proof to show it. I can't wait to see this movie. I saw Shadow of the Vampire. That was good. I like the Gothic look. The movie has. The old school vibes. Nothing wrong with movies like The substance. It is a good movie too. Thank you for explaining The New version of Nosferatu movie. It sounds good. I know Stephen King says he likes the Nosferatu look. Over the sexy look of Dracula. I do enjoy your videos very much. Horror movies are still the best. 🦇🧛
This movie launched on New Year day in my country. So for us its a 2025 movie... And what a way to kick off the year. That was dark, gothic, weird and scary as hell. Incredible acting all round. Just want to point out that Skarsgard actually worked with opera vocalists for months to learn how to lower his voice an octave. He put an insane anount of work into pulling off that voice and although post production probably altered it a smidge, its almost all him. Maybe even entirely him
Dunno how much modulation went on with Bill's voice, man. He trained with an opera singer to get his voice as low as it could. It's out on new year's day in my country. Can't fucking wait.
Watched it yesterday it was a beautiful nightmare. Almost distracted by the sound and visuals, I will be seeing it again in theaters. Bill's voice was amazing, so impressed with his take on the character. Also, I just wanted to add I love The Lighthouse, but I totally get how it's not for everyone.
Fun fact. This movie was produced by Chris Columbus. The director of the first 2 Harry Potter movies, Mrs.Doutfire, and the first 2 home alone movies. He also produced Robert eggers first 2 movies.
It would be awesome if horror got its due this year at the Oscars, even though they are completely tainted. I haven't seen Nosferatu so i don't know about Depp's performance yet, but Naomi Scott absolutely deserves an Oscar nom for Smile 2. Best performance i have seen in the cinema this year, hands down.
I think he really needs to get over himself with the whole ''jesus was maybe a vampire" thing. This dude's got the literal understanding and emotional depth of a tea spoon. And a real tendency to beat a dead horse to 2nd death. I lost brain cells with Midnight Mass and fell asleep a couple times. There's never any real climax to his movies either. Like...nothing actually happens. There's no real final fight, no resolution, everything ends in a sorta tepid cliff hanger. It's annoying. I can't shake the feeling that he just takes other people's ideas and expands on them in a very dumb way. I don't think they're really his concepts. Or if they are, he does not really explore them. There's a vast ocean and he's just sitting on the shore line with his toes in the sand...and that's it. He's afraid to go further.
@@andrabook8758 well, some of us enjoyed it. The series focuses on the frailty of human life and human beliefs on the afterlife and death. It also stepped outside of the norm where the good guy wins and the vampire gets vanquished.
Last 5 minutes of this film I had goosebumps and chills running through my body cause of the visuals and the score. It’s too early to say if this is Eggers’s best movie but he sure gives an experience.
I watched Nosferatu just yesterday. I rewatched the '22 film, the '79 film (which i've never seen before) and rewatched the 2000 Shadow of the Vampire The only thing i can think of is...i wanna watch the 2024 Nosferatu again! I love your mixed feelings section especially the Ellen/Orlok "relationship" but i myself also did have mixed feelings about the pacing But i think i need to sit on it some more 😊 and rewatch it
15:43 for anyone not getting why Orlok looks the way he does, he is supposed to be a medieval Transylvanian count. Just google Vlad the Impaler, the guy on which the original Dracula was based.
15:44 So late but the thing you’re talking about is because that is how Hungarian/romanian noblemen looked. Just interesting as a fact of history, I get why people would ? At it. In the novel, Dracula also had a moustache.
I have crossed oceans of time waiting for a vampire movie like this. I absolutely loved this movie. It’s just stunning in every way. I was also thrown by the one element of the visual design of Orlok. Otherwise it was honestly perfect for me. As you often say, I respect Eggers other films more than I actually enjoy them. I have never watched the Lighthouse. I was a little nervous about this film with Eggers, but he owned this film. The cast and the actors were just unbelievable. I loved this film!
I hate the lust/love relationship they put in the Dracula/Nosferatu movies. The book is so awesome without having that. But I know he's reimagining the old movie, not directly trying to adapt the book, which should be like a 3 movie epic if it was adapted properly. Either way, I've been infinitely hyped for this movie since I heard whispers of him doing it.
It's Gothic horror it most definitely has to have that sexual tension and lust/romantic elements. Eggers probably takes it up a few notches, but I'm here for it.
I just saw it and it was incredible. This will be go down as one if the great horror movies of all time. Noseratu couldn't have been played any better. The mustache is fine, he looks like vlad the impaler and it didn't bother me at all. One of the best looking horror movies ever.
I think he's referring to Orloks face hair including moustache? You can see it at the scene where you see his silhouette through the window drape where the girl is almost floating
Hmm.... I was going to try to get around to see this soon. Knowing our host supports this movie makes me wonder where and when Art the clown makes his appearance. If that happens in this movie, count me out.
Bill skarsgard actually got lessons from an opera singer to lower his voice a whole octave. That’s commitment right there

THE WITCH is a friggin’ MASTERPIECE. Just wanted to say that 👋🏻
I've watched it about 5 times now and every time I've noticed something that I didn't before. Truly a masterpiece.
That ending visual 😢 I can’t stop thinking ab it
Nosferatu & Abigail & Renfield are all great vampire movies with their own style!
I liked Voyage of Demeter
She has the range
Just a reminder - Rose is not her last name, her name is Lily-Rose and last name is Depp
She explains the link with Orlock in the film. Goes back to her childhood apparently- eek 😥. I’ll leave it at that.
The music reminded me a lot of
Nosferatu (1922), Salem’s Lot (both 1979 and 2024 films), Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Shining, Insidious, The Nun, The Omen and The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
15:45 I know what you’re talking about, I took it as a nod to the real life figure that inspired Dracula.
He also had that feature in the novel
I'm really excited for this after all the positive reviews this has been having
15:45 I know what you mean, I’m pretty sure it’s an addition that harkens back to how Dracula is described in Bram Stokers novel.
You have the exact same opinion of Eggers movies as me, so your take has me excited for this now.
Great review as always !
Would love to see you do a ranking of all four Nosferatu movies. ( the 1922 one, the 1979 one, the 1988 italian sequel to the 1979 one, and the new one )
I'm glad you mentioned the 1979 remake because it is amazing too.
Could you count shadow of the vampire?
Interested in how it compares to Bram Stoke d's Dracula. I love that one. Maybe a replacement favorite vampire flick. Love your channel.
Bram stoker was way better imo, I hated this version🙃
I loved this Nosferatu compared to Bram stokers Dracula a lot more personally
Coppola's Dracula is like succumbing to desire. This Nosferatu is like succumbing to despair. It is still very much about the vampire as an intoxicating force, but it is not sexy or romantic. It is intoxicating in the same way that grief and depression can suck you in. It is incredibly compelling, with stunning visuals and engrossing sound design especially around the Count.
I like this way better than Dracula
Hell yeah, I been looking forward to this movie all year, Great Review Cody
I loved Abigail as well. I don’t think it’s gotten the love it deserves. I think you and I are about the same on this movie. Lilly Rose deserves a lot of praise. She did a hell of a job.
I am a big fan of Bram Stoker’s book and the “eternal lust,” possessiveness, psychological, and supernatural manipulation that Dracula/Nosforatu has for the main female character has me screaming YES!
Hoping the count has a big mustache too! I would do the Leo point whistle in the theater.
You should give The Lighthouse another spin. I've seen it a few times now and I came to appreciate it more on the subsequent viewings.
Absolutely. It's a masterpiece. I hate that word but it's so unique and original that I loved.
It's my personal favorite of Eggers' movies, but Nosferatu is a close second. It's the movie that really opened my eyes to how great of an actor Robert Pattinson really is.
Great review. Thanks! Looking forward to checking this out on Christmas if it makes it to my neck of the woods.
Now Eggers needs to remake the Original Phantom Of The Opera!!!! Im the biggest Nosferatu fan ever since a kid but i think the greatest silent horror film is POTO
Btw , I love the new Nosferatu film & Shadow Of The Vampire and the 1979's Nosferatu but the original is still way more dream like compared to this movie
This is one of the best BEST reviews I’ve seen. Everyone is hyping it up. I like how you said it’s not essentially scary. Now I feel a bit disappointed bc of the opening scene. I had high hopes for this film. Mhm we’ll see
big Nosforotu fan finally saw the original...made me a bigger fan. that and Dracula from Francis ford Copola.
I’m very excited to get to see this! I’m going Christmas 🎄 day!
I love old language in movies... It's one thing i've loved about Eggers
My least favorite was ‘Northman’, my most favorite was ‘The Lighthouse’…. I hope ‘Nosferatu’ lands for me!
What about The VVitch?
The Northman is one of my all time favs
i also did not care for The Northman while so many others loved it… i need to rewatch to double check i wasn’t just going crazy that day lol
@@KatLadyFLNot sure you're going crazy😂 The Northman was just plain bad to me. The Witch is a horror classic, The Lighthouse is a classic abomination. The Northman is just, mehhhh.
I’m the opposite 😂 Im also looking forward to this and hope it’s good! ✌️
Fascinating that you divide vampire appreciators so. I’m definitely of the cinephile sort. This really helps me map horror fans into subgenres; thx.
Watch them all. If you can appreciate the Witch, I think you'll love all of his other films just as much.
I can't wait to see this movie, I saw the 1922 original a few times and discovered there's a 70s version of the movie.
I haven't read the book (yet), but it's interesting that they made The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It made those scenes in the Nosferatu films make a bit more sense contextually
Dracula is a good book but it isn't as epic as most of the movie adaptations honestly.
I'm not really a fan of super old movies but I always loved Nosferatu. I'm so excited to see this new one. I hope I like it.
Ok, movies out now, I saw it Christmas Day, NOW I’ll watch your review 😊
Thanks for the review. I thought this film was perfection. The love/lust story, tone, production. And the acting!!!!!! Flawless!!!
November ranked will be tomorrow
Lol
Just saw it yesterday and was very happy.
The upcoming Wolfman looks really good
Finally got a chance to see it, wow what a crazy good film. It’s interesting that instead of the classic solution at the end the original 1922 ending pulls that rug out from under you and reminds you this is not a 2024 film with a happy Hollywood ending
The acting is impressive, best I’ve seen all year.
Great review, Im excited for this one!
Same
I’m so bummed if have to wait 20 days for this now!
So happy to hear Lily is well received! She’s an amazing talent that I was worried would go to waste because of The Idol.
@@KyleALarkins Oh, like what? and no muffin, that's not what a "Freudian slip" means.I didn't watch "idol".... you did tho, apparently.
@ That is actually how a Freudian slip works. But of course you don’t want to acknowledge that since that would mean you’ve been successfully called out. God forbid you be wrong. Your poor ego.
@@KyleALarkins You're psychologically illiterate.
Cody,
Good to see you man.
Thanks for the review. I'm looking forward to it.
Fun fact. This movie was produced by Chris Columbus. The director of the first 2 Harry Potter movies, Mrs.Doutfire, and the first 2 home alone movies. He also produced Robert eggers first 2 movies.
Tbh. I was really sceptical cause i love og so much. But your review kinda convince me to give it a try
**thanks cody! Looks like I'll be planning to watch this then. Avid Castlevania/vampire fan here and this movie does look unique and beautiful!**
🧛🦇
Have you ever seen the 1979 adaptation of Nosferatu?
That’s my personal favourite take on the Dracula story.
The Werner Herzog one? The plot is a bit all over the place but Klaus Kinski is amazing as the Count.
I liked "Midnight mass" as a Vampire flick😎
an excellent series, 1 of my faves.
@@davepastern yeah, sure did. by making sure no one wins. Ground breaking!
@@andrabook8758 and there's nothing wrong with that. For 99.99999% of the population, we don't win in our lives.
Last 5 minutes of this film I had goosebumps and chills running through my body cause of the visuals and the score. It’s too early to say if this is Eggers’s best movie but he sure gives an experience.
I watched Nosferatu just yesterday. I rewatched the '22 film, the '79 film (which i've never seen before) and rewatched the 2000 Shadow of the Vampire
The only thing i can think of is...i wanna watch the 2024 Nosferatu again! I love your mixed feelings section especially the Ellen/Orlok "relationship" but i myself also did have mixed feelings about the pacing
But i think i need to sit on it some more 😊 and rewatch it
15:43 for anyone not getting why Orlok looks the way he does, he is supposed to be a medieval Transylvanian count.
This is my most inticipated film of the year. I am very glad you loved it
I hate the lust/love relationship they put in the Dracula/Nosferatu movies. The book is so awesome without having that. But I know he's reimagining the old movie, not directly trying to adapt the book, which should be like a 3 movie epic if it was adapted properly. Either way, I've been infinitely hyped for this movie since I heard whispers of him doing it.
Nah. Needs more lust
It's Gothic horror it most definitely has to have that sexual tension and lust/romantic elements. Eggers probably takes it up a few notches, but I'm here for it.
@@aquariussolaris2492 gay
I just saw it and it was incredible. This will be go down as one if the great horror movies of all time. Noseratu couldn't have been played any better. The mustache is fine, he looks like vlad the impaler and it didn't bother me at all. One of the best looking horror movies ever.
Crazy with just how opposite i am with your Egger film opinions
I think he's referring to Orloks face hair including moustache? You can see it at the scene where you see his silhouette through the window drape where the girl is almost floating
Thought he was referencing the large bump on his forehead lol
i definitely thought he was talking about the facial hair
Hmm....
I was going to try to get around to see this soon.
Knowing our host supports this movie makes me wonder where and when Art the clown makes his appearance.
If that happens in this movie, count me out.
Hi Cody happy late thanksgiving 🎉
I recommend giving The Lighthouse another look.
