The best way to explain is that similar events can occur in multiple universes. It’s no different from having Batman’s parents dying in multiple universes. Rick Flag Jr is dead in the DCEU, then he’s in Gunn’s universe. It really isn’t that complicated as some may think.
It's not really that complicated but people want to see that event, Rick flag dying is not a common knowledge like Batman's parents so audience watch the 2 suicide squad films and it makes audience confused after that, not everyone is nerd like us

Nobody wants to sit through the whole “start with Superman, then move on Batman, then move on this other hero and then eventually Justice League.” Batman and Superman have been done a kajillion times, you can still introduce and adapt new heroes without needing to start at square one. Hell, it’s possible we aren’t even getting a Justice League movie in Chapter 1. They’re still gonna take their time. Marvel didn't start with origins for everyone. Hawkeye, BW, Thor were already in existence and origins came after Avengers. Only Hulk ( The real beginning - which was re-worked and recast ) Stark, and Cap were origins at the beginning

I don’t like the pick for Hal Jordan or the fact that he’s 60 years old.. I don’t like that are getting a Batman who’s starting on his last Robin bypassing so much history.. I don’t like that Superman has his underwear on the outside.. I think I pretty much hate everything I’m hearing but I do like James Gunn and he hasn’t failed yet in my opinion but I HATE EVERYTHING IM HEARING!!!!!
Pretty much how to the Star Wars canon interacts with the Legends canon. Legends isn't canon till it is mentioned in the modern canon. Of course whatever is brought in from Legends is reimagined for the modern canon. I would expect the same with the DCEU/DCU.
In other words, it's a messy reboot attempt that wasn't thought out, so the explanation of what is canon and how it is canon is also messy and not well thought out.
