If your fan doesn't come on until it's 80 that's too hot. Thats borderline death.

I've never used that type of worm bin. Seem easy enough for a small setting.

You will only get bugs & knots frit flies when you are too wet and it turns anaerobic.

Great video. I grew up in WV (Preston Co), many, many years ago and now live in Alaska. Still love the Mountaineers! Been thinking about starting some worms and really like your Worm Factory.

what part of alaska? I am in CO born and raised and trying to head up there to Anchorage to live and die up there. Do you recommend it?

We live on the Kenai Peninsula, south of Anchorage, and love it. I wouldn’t live in Anchorage. If you’re looking to live in a city run by out of control crooked liberals then Anchorage is for you.

Just got my worm farm and your video is so helpful. I got everything but the thermometer so I was glad to watch you unpack the farm. Have you posted an updated video yet on how your test worked out? Also, I just keep filling up the trays with kitchen scraps? Do I add anymore pumice stone or shredded paper?

I have not posted an updated video. We had a crazy heat wave come through in early summer and my worms all left the bin to escape the heat. I’m just now getting new worms into them, so I will probably post another video in a couple weeks once they’re established.

I ordered that same one. It is Black plastic. This is my 3rd one, they don't last long here in Las Vegas. The problem is that the previous ones I had were Green and the plastic was thicker. They lasted about 2 to 2½ years. The black one has already started to warp and I have only had it 6 months. Just because something is cheaper does not mean that it is the same quality. After this one, I am going back to the green ones.

I used to sell these. I actually stopped selling them because a small rubbermaid tote with holes drilled for air under the kitchen sink worked better for me. I think it is probably more getting into the habit of directing waste to whatever system you are using.

Enjoyed the video. I’m thinking about getting these for my quail waste. Curious how it worked on the rabbit litter. Assuming you’re using wood chips. Also I’m from WV as well. Can you do a video or like information on the WV conservation cost sharing?
    Thanks

Hello 😊 It’s easier for me to have in depth conversations on Facebook if you want to find the Elbon Mill Farm page and holler at me over there, but I’ll answer here too just in case you don’t use FB.
I actually lost all the worms in my bins (totally my fault) and had to start over. Currently I’m raising them on “old soil” from my flower pots and kitchen scraps. I don’t want to add fertilizer to the pots so I’m using this as a way to “recharge” the nutrients in the soil. I don’t know if it’s going to work or not, but it should.
We have quail too and I’ve been discussing using the bedding for biochar with some friends, but we actually think quail waste is so “hot” that it’s better used to quickly break down wood chips left over from tree trimming. So I’m currently spreading a layer of wood chips (dropped off by tree trimming companies) and then a layer of quail bedding/manure. I don’t know yet how I think it’s doing, and all this rain hasn’t helped I’m sure.
As for the cost share thing, this year’s signups are done, but they’ll do them again next spring. There are multiple conservation districts in WV each covering a few counties. The programs vary depending on the district, but they’re usually similar in the things they help out with.
Like I said, feel free to find me over on FB. I post more frequently the things I’m doing over there, and I’m better at sharing info there too. 😊

@@ElbonMillFarm I live in a more suburban setting. That’s why I was hoping for the worm composting to work. I wonder if I would be better suited with a tumbling composter? I think capacity will be more important to me that speed. I’ve been gardening for the last 12 years. But I’m new to quail and compost. We used to do a 30x15 tilled garden in the back yard every year. Last year we gardened weeds more than we gardened vegetables, so this year we switched to containers which hasn’t been nearly as productive, but a lot more pleasant. My plan is to use the quail waste and then compost to build the soil in the containers. So my plan is to only harvest the compost in the spring and summer months.

@@Seeves1982 I think the quail waste would be hard on the worms, I only say that because while worms are always in the manure under my rabbit hutches, I have yet to find them in piles of poultry bedding until you get way down to the bottom where it’s already composted.
We used a tumbler for a short time with the quail when they were babies. It was working well from a composting standpoint, it just wasn’t really time/space effective for us. We’d need multiple tumblers to handle the amount of quail we have. Plus the tree company delivered two full truckloads of chips that I really need composted down before next growing season 😂

I've had my Worm farm since early May. At one point (late august) I had 3 towers, one processing, and two feeders. I finally got the processing tower to the harvesting stage after not feeding it (bottom tray)for 3-4 weeks, so back down to just two towers. Castings turned out good, except in the original bin/tower I didn't use my coffee bean blender to turn the egg shells into a fine powder. Very important for those pretty castings free of all the white egg shell chips. I now make my own worm food. Fast forward to late September/first or October. The lid no longer fits as it did in the early months. The weight of the trays puts too much weight on the legs of the base, and they start to collapse. I have some worms that started to climb (normal), and ended up out of the "farm" because the lid no longer is fitting. Not sure what I can do about this? It's not overly wet...

    • @ElbonMillFarm
      @ElbonMillFarm  3 роки тому +1

I don’t know what would help that. Do you think if you removed some of the material, or maybe divided it into a new bin it would help with the weight?
Mine overheated during a super hot day and all escaped. 🙁 So I’m getting ready to start again with the bins in a different location with steadier temperatures.

@@ElbonMillFarm I did get the lid to fit correctly, I did some major "fluffing" :). This has been a fun experiment. My worm food consists of - Pulverizing the whole wheat oatmeal (1C), egg shells (1/2C) and seems to works really well to blend. Whole wheat flour(1C), Corn meal(1C), Diatomaceous Earth (1/2C) just needs to be mixed in by hand. They seem to really go crazy for this combo. I use this for my Canadian Night Crawlers too. Keep the videos coming!!

I use copper foil tape at the inside top edge of my Hungry Bin. I'm not sure why, but the worms stop about 1" short of the tape. It works great for stopping escapee's.
