  • How to know when to add another worm tower tray to the top to actively feed it as your compost worms turn food scraps & shredded cardboard into natural fertilizer & soil amendments! In my VermiHut worm tower my compost worms give me about 60 pounds of worm castings a year but how do you know when to rotate your trays? Watch this video to see what I look for!
    We also checkin on the last three side feedings to include the kombucha SCOBY piece & add the last feeding before this worm tray, full of red wigglers & blue composting worms, gets put down a level as it finishes consuming the last bits of food scraps & shredded cardboard. Finally stay tuned to the end where I add a new inoculating tray to the bottom and get my VermiHut back up to 4 trays!
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

    I like the fact that would put the prepared bedding underneath to get ready for use. It is a smart use of time to help let the bedding age and start getting some life in it before it becomes the feeding tray.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому

      Yes! It looks as if they like to eat their oats while they consume the news in the morning😂 At 85% castings a lot of worm farmers would go for a quick harvest but with a worm tower it is kind of like a never ending conveyor belt where a fresh batch of castings is ready every 2 months so you can afford to let the worms make every last bite into castings! I’ll put another tray on top and let this finish underneath for another 60 days. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch & comment!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @emilylui2852
      @emilylui2852 2 роки тому +1

      So you feed each bin about 60 days, and then add another new tray on top and feed that while the first bin finishes up underneath for another 60 days? So... it takes about 120 days from start to finish for one bin? Is thst about right? I'm not sure then how to add more bins to the tower...

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +1

      @@emilylui2852 I agree, my system came with 5 trays and I can't imagine ever getting all 5 on it. I typically have 3 trays on my VermiHut. The top tray is being actively fed, the one under that is getting the last bit of scraps eaten and will be harvested next, the one under that is an inoculating tray that has only bedding on it and will be put on top next. Each one spends about 60 days in each position so a tray is typically on the system from 150-180 days depending on how long it is in the inoculating position. Sometimes I have 4 trays on momentarily (2 weeks tops) as I add another bedding only inoculating tray on the bottom to store it. This video might explain it better ua-cam.com/video/I_ilo_M8gv0/v-deo.html
      I had not thought it through like you did so when I started I had dreams of all 5 trays going on eventually, but I could never get there. Thanks so much for the great questions!! And of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    I think it's more just them running around on the newspaper and pooping on it that degrades it like that. They do eat it eventually but I don't think they're making a concerted effort to tear it apart either, it's just a happy accident that they get to poop enzymes all over their future food. Pre-digestion, if you will xD

    It`s normal to put your new trays on top so that the worms migrate upwards. You`ve given your worms a feed so they will be inclined to stay where they are and not migrate downwards. Also, dry cardboard? Don`t you inoculate it first?
    When my worms go a-wandering, I use dry cardboard to discourage them because they don`t like the dryness of it.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +5

      That tray of completely dry cardboard went on the very bottom where it will sit and inoculate for 60-80 days receiving any excess moisture or drippings; I may have confused things with my fancy editing trick...it just gets a little boring watching me take all the bins off and add them back on so I spliced the videos together to make it look like I pressed the tray through all the other trays and added them back on top. In the next VermiHut worm bin video I will be adding a 60 day old inoculated tray on top and taking out the pre-harvest tray to harvest the castings, while this current top tray will go down one to the pre-harvest position.
      Great tip on the dry cardboard as a barrier!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & comment!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi I haven’t had any worm juice come out of my trays. They seem to be wet enough and the blanket is always kept quite wet. Why would I not be getting any excess moisture dripping out of the bottom tray please? I live in a subtropical area of Australia.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +1

      Hello!! That is a good thing!! I think you are not getting any moisture dripping out of your trays because you are doing everything CORRECT!!! I rarely get any moisture to pool up in the basin because I let the moisture of the food scrap absorb into, and equalize with, the amount of bedding I continually add each feeding. The basin is there incase you overfeed for the amount of worms you have or if you add excess water to the trays...both can lead to too much moisture and leaky trays. So if your trays feel nice and damp and your worms are healthy than you have a perfect bin!!
      Some people purposefully add cupfuls of water to get some "worm juice" or leachate out of their bins but I do not recommend this. If you want a great liquid fertilizer, what you can do to make "worm casting tea" is add some finished worm castings to a nylon pantie hose or fine mesh strainer bag (I think I have some in my affiliate links in the description & pinned comment if you want to see what they look like) Then add this to a 3-5 gallon bucket with water for 36-48 hours with a bubbler from a fish aquarium. After this "tea" is brewed, you can use it both on the leaves and directly water it into your plants! I hope this helps!! It sounds like you are doing s great job with your bins!!🪱🪱🪱 Thanks so much for watching!!

You can add other amendments to it as well like ground up dried banana peal for potassium or blended aloe from an aloe plant leaf etc. The natural fertilizer possibilities are endless and free once you get a bubbler!!🪱🪱🪱

    Totally confused about the direction that the worms migrate. They are supposed to climb up? Into the next bin? Not down? How does that work?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Місяць тому +1

      Compost worms will generally go to where the food is, but they are very curious creatures so you will find some in every tray. Each of these trays has 1,600 holes in the bottom so they can travel freely between trays. Most folks feed the top tray and each time a new top tray is put on it and fed, the worms will travel up to it. In nature compost worms (Epigeic earthworms) are on the top layer of soil clustering around dead organic matter, garden worms (Endogeic earthworms) live in the soil and are more solitary, and finally the deep burrowing worms (Anecic earthworms) have deep holes and drag food down with them. So compost worms, which we use for vermicomposting, tend to like the top layers where it is easier for their weaker muscles to move...but they will go where it is moist and has food to sustain life. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Great info. Thank you. I've used 14 gallon containers for my worms until I accidentally killed off two bins filled with red wigglers. Saw the video and am planning on buying one. Is there notches on the sides/corners of each tray? The holes are great when it comes to removing worms from the compost. Plus the elevated stand keeps centipedes and other critters out.
      I subscribed and liked once I watched your video.

      Thanks so much for subscribing and liking our video!! There aren't really notches on the corners but the sides are very slightly tapered with a lip that goes all the way around so they fit within each other. The bottom white plastic board that goes on top of the bottom basin has raised notches that help direct the tray to stay in place. I like to use one of the trays to sift compost from my other worm bins! Oh man...die offs are so heartbreaking, but I'm so glad to hear your going to get back into it!!

    How many worms did I start with?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому

      Great question!! I started this bin with a 2000 worm mix of red wigglers and blue worms. My Outdoor Worm Bin was started with 90 red wigglers and my Tiny Worm Bin was started with 50-100 red wigglers. Given the choice, with money not being a barrier, I would start a new bin with 1000-2000 compost worms. It is so much easier to see if they are eating, I can see the castings build up, and it gives me the confidence to know I am doing things right...which was a big deal for me when I first got started🤣 I started my first bin with a hand full of bait worms and I think I checked on them 10 times a day...they didn't stand a chance🤣😂🤣 Thanks for asking a great question and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    I thought you were supposed to give citrus to worms? Or am I mistaken?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 місяці тому +1

      I hear a lot of "do not feed citrus" to your worm bins, but I can say through experience a mature worm bin will devour citrus! I think folks are just trying to protect new worm bin owners from over feeding food scraps that tend to last long or they think citrus is too acidic, but just like humans, the pH going in is not the same pH coming out (boy would that hurt😂) So go ahead and give citrus a try in very small amounts until you know how much your worms like it! But thankfully they eat it or the Earth would be full of rotting citrus!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

I hope that came off as constructive criticism or a suggestion and not some kind of an insult or anything. I'm really finding what you're doing educational as I said. I have tried and failed numerous times in the past to get a worm farm going for composting and now I am finally getting an actual worm farm setup. @Vermicompost Learn by Doing I see that you have a lot of videos. Being that I am going to be starting up a VirmaHut this next weekend, is there a video that you have, or is there a resource that you have, or do you have a recommendation as to how to do the initial setup of a vermicomposting worm farm? I totally get the rotating of the bins for inoculating and harvesting and whatnot.. but the initial setup is what I think would be advantageous to learn about.

      @@mspringett I do have an early set up of a tray, but not the first tray. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/4dxDQNbRDzQ/v-deo.html
      It is really rough, one of my first videos, and you are not going to like the sound at all😂
      But let me also tell you in writing what I learned and how to start the first tray.
      1. The VermiHut comes with a brick of coco coir, so you have bedding ready to go, all you do is add water in a bucket and let it absorb for 20 mins or whatever the directions say.
      2. There maybe an extra cloth like material in there...you don't need it, it is a left over from before they had the white plastic barrier with holes.
      3. Leave the lid OFF for the first couple of days with the Vermihut in a room with a light on 24 hours a day. This will keep the worms in the bin getting used to their new home.
      4. You can feed them a couple of strawberry tops or other fast food on the first day...barely any food...just enough to let them know there is food there. After 4 days dig in where you put the 2 strawberry tops and see if they are eating it...if so, you can add a few more and check them in a week...this is for about 500-1000 worms if you have more give a couple more strawberry tops.
      5. After a week and you see they are eating food, then you can add a little more food each week, making sure there is little to no food left. Overfeeding is the number one problem in new worm bins.
      6. Do not be alarmed if the worms go up into the lid or down into the basin. You can rescue them form the basin every couple of weeks but don't bother with the lid. after you get 2-3 trays on you can add dry shredded cardboard inoculating trays to the bottom and you won't find liquid or worms in the basin anymore.
      7. After 30-45 days, add another tray, 30-45 days after that add another tray....after you are up to 3 trays they do 60 day intervals from that point on.
      Those are kind of the points I wish I knew before I started, the rest is in the directions. If you have any questions feel free to leave a new comment on one of my latest videos and I will be happy to answer or help out in any way I can!
      I hope this helps, the VermiHut really helped me have the confidence to run a worm bin!!
