  • Zelda Volkov believes religion is personal. That's why she offers the married Orthodox Jewish women in her neighborhood a place to look as natural - or as unnatural - as they want while still remaining true to their faith.

Human beings are so ridiculous. Burning wigs to protest the wearing of them...such a small thing. Such an inconsequential act in an inconsequential way of life.
Religion had such potential to be a beautiful act of love in the world but it's a failed experiment. Religion has caused more hatred and destruction than any love its produced.
And you can see that here, where a woman has to fear for her life, and her livelihood, because she sews hair into lace.
Ridiculous, and so shameful for all those who don't want to allow human beings to live freely.

    • @leefrenchfry

Burning0Lilac The burning of wigs has nothing to do with protesting the “natural” wig look. There was an issue with the source of the hair used for wigs; it was questionable if the hair was donated as a sacrifice in idol worship, which is against Jewish law. That is why some communities decided to burn the wigs and started wearing synthetic wigs or other head coverings instead. I am an orthodox Jewish woman, who is proud to wear the human hair wig. It looks natural, but the savvy can tell it’s a wig and not my hair.

Religiousness is the daily devotion and relationship with the most high not the outward presumptions of others. You are doing the service of God by being the lovely person you are and making sure the women of the land have access to their coverings and while i am not of the religion i can clearly see that having a natural appearance of a sheitel would be more suitable . If we were created in HIS image naturally then why be shunned for a more natural appearance. Keeping ladies feeling and looking their best while maintaining law makes a happy wife, mother, and home . May God keep blessing you so you may bless others.

Traditionally religion only endorses the men to be in business and not women. That's why she gets the hate. Women keep house and make babies, not make a mark on the world by being in the world of business. Even she respects her faith she still pushes the boundaries of her heritage. I have alot of respect for this young woman.

    • @alizahalon
      @alizahalon 2 роки тому

Your first statement is not at all true. The Torah has had women doing business for centuries. In the strictly orthodox and ultra orthodox communities when a woman gets divorced, she usually continues to cover her hair even though she is not obligated to do so. That's why people were a bit taken aback by her not wearing a wig. Women in the strictly orthodox and ultra orthodox Jewish world have been and continue to do business, run shops, teach, are school administrators, have college degrees and hold down full-time jobs in the work force. Not just now but for centuries in Europe as well. Not everyone can though. If a woman is a homemaker and/or a mother, she is not any less of a person if she doesn't have a job outside the home. She is doing a very important job devoting herself to raising her children or being a homemaker so her husband can concentrate on his business. The Torah recognizes this as does the civil government.

She said explicitly that it's not necessarily about modesty - it's about saving a part of yourself for your partner. In women's case, it's their hair that they save for their partner. No one else will see their hair. In men's case, it's the same idea - they're expected to wear suits and formal hats. Only their wives will see them in anything more casual.

I just think dogmatic rules and customs cause so much anxiety to humans. I just hope they know it is not man that gives lasting approval but it is God.He reads the heart. My 2 cent that changes nothing.

it's ok if a wig is nicer than your hair. Gd didn't command married jewish woman to cover their hair in order to make themselves less attractive. it's because of the relationship we have with Gd, it's to give them privacy and to create a boundary between her and other men. so even if someone doesn't realize you're wearing a wig, that's ok. you know you are, and beyond that, it is important to feel good in it and there for it's a good thing for the hair of a wig to be beautiful. a beautiful wig is a way to beautify this commandment and feel beautiful in yourself, inside and out.

The problem is not privacy, the problem is that women needs to follow a gender norm which forbids them to show their natural hair as oppose to men.

Why does it have to be a wig? Can’t they use other hair coverings?

A wig covers her hair more completely and that is the actual mitzvah. Many women wear a scarf/kerchief or snood in the house and a wig when they go out to shop or work or what have you. That way they can be more sure that other men won't see their hair.

They have perverted faith. They are making a belief that was meant to keep you righteous and humble- into a very expensive prideful thing! Most of the men probably don't want to see you with your real hair after they go to these shops. I cannot imagine God is pleased when He sees this going on in your in your communities. Think of the poor and the elderly, think of the money that could go to them instead of on your head. Unbelievable. I have learned from so many precious people who survived the Holocaust... you spit on their memory.

Is there a stress if the wig looks better than your natural hair ?

So if you're trying to cover your hair out of modesty or respect or whatever, why not just put on a scarf or hat? Why a wig?

    • @DodiTov

We do! The thing is that a sheitel is for extended use outside the house. For the women who work, it's a must because you cannot wear a hat all day inside at work. Quick trip to the supermarket? Ok, scarf. Oh..it's not modesty, it's privacy. Hair is a symbol between man and women. Who else needs to see it?

Do they realise they look much better in wigs than without?

Dear, I am giving you a thumb up for having the guts to divorce and turn the bullshit of an oppressive religion into a business. Wish I hear your life story...pretty sure it sounds a bit like Deborah Feldman’s, the author of Unorthodox....excellent movie, too!

2:19 so they're only allowed to buy a wig at a Jewish store? Because she is definitely not the first person in the world to make a natural looking wig.

Probably some sort of kosher equivalent restriction

I don't think so. People buy wigs from many different manufacturers, especially synthetic ones.
