  • On this episode of Hair Me Out, we feature Tallie (@tntbytallie,) a wig seller and stylist who specializes in wigs for Orthodox Jewish women. In Judaism, some married women will cover their hair for modesty. Some wear scarves or hats, but many wear wigs. We follow Tallie as she does a new wig consultation with her client Chana and demonstrates how she makes alterations to wigs.

This is so cool! I'm African American and I went to cosmetology school ages ago. There are small companies but those are typically hairstylist and wig makers who give that money and collect that hair in person and thats a small tiny handful of people. Unless you buy from a temple from a middle person but those are all above the table. Typically not from china.

Unless you go to the country where the hair is sourced and buy it off a person's head than it is usually unethical in some way, number 1 it would be very expensive to buy European hair, especially blondes or redheads,I mean 4000.00 dollars for only the hair expensive and many times more than that, and then you must consider the expense of hand knotting a wig,China got into huge trouble for selling hand knotting done by children.Think the cost of a hyper realistic toupee and not just a hairline,I have been a hair stylist for 30 years and my next door neighbor who was a holocaust survivor taught me and her granddaughter to make wigs when we were both around 11,trust me most of them are not ethical most forget about the hand-tied front that can take two weeks or longer if it is a full-lace.Be it no illusion these are luxury wigs.

Unfortunately there is no regulation for that anywhere in the world so there is no way to know for sure, and let's be honest, knowing how profit is valued more than the well-being of people most of the time it will not be ethically sourced.

    • @hanasheeva7563
      @hanasheeva7563 2 роки тому +20

@@Lia-hd7rh great question, I’ll explain to the best of my ability: the reason religious Jewish women cover their hair after marriage doesn’t have anything to do with beauty / subtracting from the woman’s original natural beauty, in an effort to “ward off” other men. If anything , like you guys have aptly pointed out, wearing lace top wigs that look like their coming out of your head and are gorgeous only ADD to one’s beauty. So why do they wear them in the first place? Answer: because hair covering is about so much more than “for the husband”- Kabbalah (mystical law) tells us that (as we know scientifically), each strand of hair is actually hollow- and that after marriage, each of those strands of hair are blessed with lots and lots of brochos- blessings for the woman and her family. By covering up one’s hair, they are retaining that multitude of bounty from Hashem (God). I’m aware that this is an extremely lofty concept, and women who cover their hair post-marriage do so on their own terms(as this shaitel macher/wig seller stated, everyone covers their hair how THEY want to- either they wear a scarf, take some bangs out to make it look more natural. To each their own). Obviously no one’s forced to do it- I’d say 99% of orthodox Jewish women cover their hair because they see the tangible blessing it brings to their home. If you have any other questions please feel free

As someone non-jewish but so interest in the wigs and the culture of more orthodox jews, this many be a strange question. What if your wig is much more beautiful than your own hair, is this still Kosher? I guess I'm thinking that the hair you show to the public is supposed to be less beautiful than what you share with your husband. So from what I know most “real human hair” wigs in urban salons get their hair from India. Indian religions have some rituals where a woman shaves her head. Then the Hindu temple gathers and sells the hair to the West. The Jewish lady in the video specifically mentioned they get their hair from China. I’m not exactly sure why the Chinese women shave their heads but they will generally not be doing it in a ritual fashion. It might actually ironically be from the Uighur Muslim women in concentration camps as well as the communist women who are poorly behaved so they get sent to basically a gulag but it’s called “vocational schooling”.
Also a lot of poor Russian women will specifically grow and shave their heads for sale because their blonde hair is very coveted by certain types of people.
The whole industry of real human hair wigs is kind of messed up in many ways.

Like kosher food is sourced and traced by supervising Rabbis. (Not accepting Indian Remy hair from Hindu females, who ritually donate their hair to their Hindu 'divinities'. And the Hindu priests then sell the donated hair to Chinese wig companies) That's why Jewish wigs are more expensive. The Jewish companies usually buy their hair from Brazil/South America, or Russia/Eastern Europe. The owners examine and often reject hair that doesn't meet their standards.

Good thing we have free will and we choose whether or not we follow them. Jews don’t follow commandments out of fear. We do it because we believe it’s good for us and the world. We don’t think we’re “going to hell” for not fulfilling a mitzvah like this

If their hair was truly special to them they wouldn't cover and damage it.

So the wigs are better than your real hair but the real hair is supposed to be special lol

Hair covering has a deeper meaning than “superficial” modesty. It isn’t to “avoid a male’s gaze” but rather to remind the married woman and her surrounding of her status as a wife.
Of course in Judaism there’s the added aspect of modesty of the body which is really meant to cover up the body and not flaunt it for all to see.
Hair covering is a completely different category

How did this tradition start? Is it because of anti-semitism in Europe where being veiled was not safe?

The purpose of covering your hair IS to cover the whole aspect of hair. What is the point of covering your hair WITH HAIR ??? The main reason of covering your hair is to hide the beauty of it...

    • @isabrookbanks4118

wrong! the main purpose of covering your hair is for modesty, not to hide the beauty of it. Sheitels are used almost as a wedding band or ring to show your dedication to your marrage.

I’m sure that hair is not ethically sourced. I feel bad for the women who were underpaid or robbed of their hair after watching SHADY.

These wigs LOOK like wigs.. Way too dense, makes it obvious. Also there is an upward slope and peak at the top that makes it look bad.
