    You may also come across an engine that has been stored ouside and you may have sludge issues. Unless you decide to strip it, you might want to pull the rocker gear and clean things up, which leaves the sump. Sticking a finger through the drain plug, will tell you if you have sludge sitting at the bottom. Using some tubing/funnel, you can poor some solvent into the sump direct, let it sit and drain. Yeah, you could remove the sump as well. Prior to fitting the rocker gear, its possible to squirt some oil onto the cam, so you know its not starting dry. The joys of old cars!, cheers Rob.

    Never put solvents/detergents in an engine. It will clog up the oil passages. Also never use starting fluid, carb, break cleaner. Put a small amount of gas in carb it will do the same thing and won't cause problems.

    When you shoot some carb cleaner or squirt a little gas into the carb, remember to stay clear of it when starting the engine because often it "coughs" or backfires straight up and will burn your face if you are too close. Try not to spill any outside the carb... If it does catch fire keep cranking it a little, so that the vacuum sucks the fire into the engine...

    You guys fell for the common myth of the "freeze plug". These plugs are not put into the block to provide freeze protection. True, the often pop out if the water in the block freezes but as anyone who has dealt with a frozen engine block knows, this does little to prevent the block from cracking. The "freeze plug" is more properly called a "core plug" and is simply there to plug holes in the casting left over from the supports for internal sand molds (water passages, etc.). The "freeze" refers to the process of the molten metal freezing back into solid, after which the plug is installed once machining is complete. The plug as frozen water protection is a legendary myth.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake 10 років тому

      Except that while they may pop out in the event of a freeze, that is not their purpose as people commonly think. "Freeze" refers to the metal solidifying after casting.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake 10 років тому +1

      martin tiffany Rather than asking the old man who was the foundry worker, it's better to ask the engineer who designed the casting. :-)

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake 10 років тому +1

      martin tiffany You're assuming I'm trying to troll or being hostile. I'm not. I'm just participating in a discussion. Since I work quite often with engineers who design castings, we often laugh about the old "freeze plug" myth so it's something I see great humor in. So in that sense, I do know what I'm talking about. Remember, the people running the foundries are typically "technicians" while the ones designing the castings are "engineers". There's a big difference between the two.

    I have a 73 454 vette. Its a pain to cold start. Have to crank almost to dead battery to get started. Don’t believe its flooding. I start every other week. I will check the fuel pump to ensure its working. I have a question:
    1. When pumping the gas, does it go straight into the intake or fill the carb bowls up or both? Im asking because i was wondering if i should pour gas directly in the carb or pouring to fill the bowl up? Any advice would help. Im bout ready to throw the Quad away and go holley fuel injection on it.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 роки тому +3

      Cold start really needs a choke. If yours is not there then that may be part of the issue. The bowls on the carburetor need to be full in order for you to be able to to start the car (not completely full but mostly). When it is cold go out and don't start the car, but look at the top of the carb. open the throttle completely and see if the flap on the front bowls close. If they don't the choke is not set up. Then look down into the carb pull the throttle back and see if gas is squirting. If it isn't you have an issue of the fuel either leaking out or evaporating and that this what the problem is. Also, your plugs might be fouled. If you pull a plug and it is all black and either wet or sooty, you are running too rich.

      @@AutoRestoMod thank you so much for taking the time to reply!🙏💪🏼. The bowl has fuel, it squirts. I am going to check the fuel pump, and the filter on the Rochester. I have never tuned the car up so I just ordered a tune up kit. I will keep you posted and love your Chanel.

    I have a Big Block 427 chevy engine that was rebuilt in 1992 and never ran, do you recommend taking it apart and/or replacing any of the internals or just fill with fluids and try it out?

    • @AutoRestoMod

      Try rotating it without plugs in the engine. If it rotates without any real grunting, you are good. If it is a little hard to turn, put Marvel Mystery oil down the bores and try in a couple of days. We'll be doing an episode on using the mobile phone bore scope to investigate engine bore issues in the next month or so.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  8 років тому +1

      +Rockin Pip Depends on the fuel. We would definately start it on a can of fresh gas. Check the carb for leaks etc. then, depending on the amount of old fuel in the tank (1/4 tank or less) you might be able to add some gas to the existing fuel and get it to go fine.

    • @rockinpip4212
      @rockinpip4212 8 років тому

      there really wasnt any fuel in it just in the corner a bit of varnish like thick stuff but very little the tank looked good do you think i can just put some new fuel in it and give her a try and dont worry about putting any mystery oil into the cylinders?

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  8 років тому

      We'd try hand cranking the engine first using a wrench on the center bolt of the crank shaft (spark plugs out). Then do a compression check, if all the cylinders check out, fire it. Check the carburetor. If it has a Holley the Accelerator pump diaphragm may be dried out as well as the power valve. Can't speak to Edelbrock carbs.

    Would this process work on a car thats been sitting for 20 years? I have a old 1961 vauxhall victor f type that has been passed down to me for my first car and it has been parked in a garage for 20 years but was running perfectly before then. Any tips on first startup advice? I have purchased all new dizzy cap and points, battery etc but im a little scared to turn her over in case i cause any damage to the engine if it was seized etc, so any tips to see if it is suitable for running would be brilliant! Thanks in advance :)

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  8 років тому +2

      +Darryl Williams Take all the plugs out and try to hand crank it with a wrench on the main crank bolt. If it won't turn over use some WD40 down the spark plug holes. Try it every few days, if you get lucky it will break free and turn. Replace the freeze plugs if so equipped. The will probably pop when pressure is applied.

    Need some help. 1975 pontiac Catalina with a 400 bb. car sit for 10 years. I started by changing the oil and filter a carburetor rebuild put marvels mystery oil in the carburetor before rebuild and in the plug wells in the cylinders. New battery new starter. A complete tune up along with new cap & rotor button new ignition control module. I did start the car before the carburetor rebuild only to let it run for about 10 15 seconds. Now that it's ready to start how what are your recommendations I don't want to foul my plug's what should I use to prime the carburetor. I tried to start it a couple of times by using starting fluid using a very little I didn't want to flood it. Im not using the fuel in the gas tank it's old and don't 👃 like gas. It did try to fire and put a white puff of exhaust out Im sure it's old fuel and a combination of marvels. It was late and I stopped. When the stroke starts to go back down, rotate the engine backwards until you find top dead center. If the pointer is on the engine timing cover and the balancer is in good shape you should be able to verify on the balancer. Then install the distributor with the rotor pointed at number one plug postion

    Hello, I don't have a classic car, but I do have a Jetta that hasn't run in about 10 years due to financial issues and me being an idiot teenager when I got it. My first car. I've done all the prep work, replaced a seized fuel pump, new plugs installed, fuel pressure and compression are fine, new battery and what not. She turns over fine, some combustion happens, but she doesn't quite make it to that point where she runs on her own, she doesn't roar to life, so to speak. I'm by no means a mechanic. I can replace just about everything, I just can't diagnose a problem. If you could point me in the right direction, my car and I would be eternally grateful.

    Sitting for years after being on the road is one thing .. how about a rebuild that's never been fired? I'm specifically worried about the 5 year old cam assembly lube (I've regularly given the bores a squirt of 30W and turned the engine over by hand). Almost ready to fire her up and can't decide whether to pull the lifters and give the lobes another smear - or just fire it up.

      Naw, she's in frame now. Just buttoning up the last of the hoses and hardware this week - and you're right - I tell myself if I don't do it it'll probably eat at my brain. FWIW, have the recommended oil in the pan, but after the first up to temperature run it'll be sipping a diesel spec 20W50 (never sure if the fresh rings will like the heavy juice on the first start) oh, forget the brand now but I've had good luck keeping flat cams alive with it, and the bottom end shells look like new ten years later..

    “Freeze plugs”are a myth. That is NOT a tell tale sign of a frozen block
    Those “freeze plugs” you talk about is actually a called “core plugs.” They are made from brass or steel and are caps used to plug the holes in some cylinder heads and engine blocks from the casting process.
    Again, not a good way to tell if the block had water in it and froze. You would need to have the block specifically checked from a machine shop to be 100% certain.
