Piccolo being misnomered throughout the film was really nice and fit thematically. Piccolo is constantly trying to get someone else to be the hero - he tries to get Goku and Vegeta. He tries to get Gohan. He tries to get anyone else to take center stage instead of him. He gets called Kami while he is definitely NOT a god (he has to rely on Dende, the new Kami, for help). He gets called King Piccolo but he is definitely NOT a villain anymore. But he doesn't consider himself the main character.
Though it isn't written very thoughtfully (this is a dragon ball story, afterall), we can interpret this as Piccolo not being true to who he really is - a hero on the same level as Goku and Vegeta. And so, when he fights against Cell with Gohan, and he sees Gohan use the Masenko, I think that's when Piccolo realizes the influence he's had on his more powerful pupil. Piccolo is VERY important to the team. Piccolo becomes the hero, and he gets to continue being the hero for Pan, the next generation.
I also thought it was adorable how Pan was the only one who really paid attention to Piccolo. She knew he only drank water and offered it to him (meanwhile Videl was going to buy him food, and still gives him the stuffed toys he says he doesn't like), and she recognized him in uniform when Gohan didn't. It was so precious. They could have made the dialogue and story progression a bit more dynamic, but this is definitely a movie about Piccolo discovering his identity and self-worth and I love that so much.

Actually Piccolo does like the stuffed toys. Even has it as his phone casing. You see them in Gohan's office as well. Basically there is a 3 year old running around and the toys make her happy. And her guardians make their living space more homey for her. Piccolo has more of them than Gohan as a reference to Gohan not spending as much time with Pan as Piccolo is currently.

So according to Toriyama, the philosophy behind Gohan Beast is that throughout Super Gohan has been wanting to improve himself to protect his family. To that end he must find a power that’s all his own, not necessarily as a Saiyan, but as an earthing, as himself. So he gets a unique transformation that taps into the wild power and potential that’s constantly mentioned throughout Z. That is Gohan Beast. This is why his aura is so wild and his demeanor very calm but with a bit of anger (perhaps one could call it Gohan’s quiet rage :D).
I like that and it makes sense. But here’s my take: it is also representative of his master, Piccolo. Not just Piccolo the Namekian, but King Piccolo, who originally believed himself to be a demon and carried himself as such. It influenced his attitude and his fighting style, and the way he trained his first student. He trained Gohan in the demon school, signified by the demon character on his Turtle School gi in the Saiyan Saga. Piccolo’s training was brutal and nigh-merciless and taught Gohan to be Self sufficient in battle and survival. All this training for this purpose of taking advantage of that blind rage that took Gohan over as a child. Even the blood red eyes and stark white hair make him kinda look more like a demon, which kinda makes for a neat parallel with Goku’s Ultra Instinct, which is angelic in origin. I’d love to see them push this angle more as they further develop their relationship.

I think the big point with Gohan, if the movie had more time to really cover it, would be that he needs to balance his priorities. He has responsibilities to be a father, a hero and a scholar… and it seems he starts the movie off with those priorities seriously imbalanced in favor of the latter, at the expense of the former two. I don’t think the point is necessarily supposed to be that Gohan is supposed to be any one of those things, and not any other. Gohan’s ridiculous potential means that he could honestly still keep up with Goku and Vegeta without working nearly as hard as them in that area… but he still needs to keep up, to be able to do his part in protecting the world, his friends and family, and not waste the potential that he has. Gohan doesn’t need to be a Goku and devote himself entirely to fighting. Each time Gohan has fallen way behind, it’s been because he has neglected his training entirely, not because he doesn’t live and breathe fighting like the others. Gohan doesn’t need to devote himself fully to being a “fighter”, but he does need to maintain competency and progression in that area to be a hero.

At least he's shown that he's not getting as rusty as he did pre-Buu, and can shake of the rust fast enough when a threat appears (eg. fight against Gamma), because, as this movie shows in particular, sometimes you can't get in contact Goku and Vegeta because they are frequently off-planet.

The part about Goku being played up as dumb in this movie (and in general) really hit home for me. I just finished watching the original Dragon Ball, and that was entirely about Goku’s journey to becoming a martial arts master. His training with Kami was entirely focused on the very thing Vegeta notices about Jiren, fighting without wasted movements or energy.
It is pretty upsetting that Goku’s being painted as an idiot in this way, but this complaint is right in line with the “modern DB is too focused on power levels” thing. Though it’s a (very) dead horse, it isn’t any less true. Goku’s been a fighting prodigy his whole life and that’s being sidelined, and it’s a shame. He has so many accolades from the original series, like learning most of Roshi’s moves just by watching them, using the Kamehameha to propel himself around (also foot Kamehameha) (also also his Oozaru punch against King Piccolo, which was off the back of a Kamehameha. I’m surprised that move didn’t become character-definingly popular), being able to counter literally every single one of Tenshinhan’s moves ever, and even some stuff from the Saiyan saga, like being the first person to learn and use the Kaioken. He’s always been not just a martial arts expert, but an innovative genius in the field.
He even has good moments in Super, specifically the SSJB Kaioken and the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Kamehameha against Kefla, and those are noted to be some of the most iconic moments in modern Dragon Ball. It’s no surprise those are highlights, since those are moments where Goku shows off his character-defining innovation and brought the action to a higher level. The problem is that the rest of the show he’s an idiot, which ranges from the endearing “I talk to gods like I met them at a gas station” to frustrating “what do you mean I forgot the senzu beans again?” It really is a shame. Goku’s definitely not smart in a traditional sense, but he’s got his one thing that he’s at the top of the game with. I hope they steer away from the path of detracting from Goku’s martial arts prowess moving forward. There’s no guarantee they will, but I’m hopeful at least, it’s all I really can do
tl;dr Goku has spent his entire life, and subsequently all of Dragon Ball, being a prodigious and innovative martial artist, and literally trained with Kami to do exactly what Jiren does with optimizing his movements, but it’s been (almost) completely sidelined, if not forgotten, in favor of him being stupid and inept in the one thing he’s good at, and it makes me cry and shid my pant

He never properly became a true adult as he is basically free to do what he wants when he isn't fighting. Which he has done since he was 11 anyway. And for his fighting prodigy side, he is sidelined by the fact that he isn't a God trying to master a technique that directly opposes his races base nature. Goiu has always been an emotional fighter. Even after his training with Popo and Kami. Training with Whis is no different

Modern DB isn't anymore focused on powerlevels than Z was and arguably the latter half of OG DB. All the achievements you listed are just him being (again) a natural prodigy.
Honestly the whole goku dumb complaint just seems like a nitpick about a trait of the character being consistent since OG DB like its a non-issue.

This movie was so good; the thing that really got me was the pacing/fight choreography. Gamma 1/2 being a simultaneous fight where they were taking on Gohan and Piccolo separately at the same time, with power-ups happing on both sides, really let the characters feel like they could show off. It's an old criticism, but it was really nice that there was no "and then X leveled up and beat all the bad guys, rescuing their friends", even if it doesn't bother me anymore and I can enjoy DBS/DBZ regardless it's still damn nice to let the spotlight be on multiple characters at once. THEN we got the big finale where despite the varied "powerlevels", EVERYONE felt useful and played a part. The ki-blasts people were throwing had enough impact that left you with the feeling of "damn, if they weren't here things would be harder" and it was a genuine team effort even if it was one final strike from a single character that secured the win.

  • @Rexaura888
    @Rexaura888 Рік тому +125

That whole thing about parents being concerned about their kids and said kids becoming concerned about if they’re actually OK in response explains so much about how Gohan started off as a kid. I can definitely see Chichi as the sort of concerned mother especially since she is a first time mother who’s taking the parent role more seriously than Goku with his free spirited nature. No doubt she was constantly checking up on Gohan any time he tripped or collided with something (not to mention that she also grew up pretty pampered by Ox King so that’s the only style of parenting she likely knew). It’s kinda refreshing that she was less that way with Goten, like she sort of learned from her experience with Gohan though it also might’ve been due to how much Goten resembled Goku. While I wouldn’t call Super a regression for her character (she does want to make sure that Goten gets a career and doesn’t end up being borderline deadbeat like Goku), I wish that side of her was more prevalent in how she parents Goten in that series.
Conversely we don’t see this with Kid Trunks because the Briefs have always seemed healthily independent and balanced by comparison. Bulma’s already going off into the world by herself in her teens, but she still returns to and stays with her mom and dad even after Vegeta moves in with her. The Briefs aren’t absent from each other’s lives but they’re not always constantly checking up on each other either. There’s that trust that they know the other’s fine and that everyone needs their space to grow in their own time and their own way.
    Spoiler topics in reply.

    • @Rexaura888
      @Rexaura888 Рік тому +11

      Spoilers:
27:30 I feel like there’s this unspoken rule for any non-Mario role Charles Martinet has been cast in since becoming Interactive Mario that you cannot have Charles Martinet make any references to him being Mario lest you bring the Nintendo ninjas down on you, or maybe the man himself has that as a condition whenever he’s cast. Because aside from the Gami Gami Devil in PopoloCrois (who is really more Wario adjacent than Mario, especially with his laugh), none of his roles sound like or allude to Mario. Sabo from PopoloCrois, Parthunax in Skyrim, Gouji in Jet Set/Grind Radio Future (which if you’ve not heard his speech, give it a listen: ua-cam.com/video/cKW8r9p0dbo/v-deo.html ), and now Magenta.
41:37 This was a huge part of Goku’s first appearance on Namek. The Ginyus sorely underestimated Goku because he would raise his power for one attack and drop it in an instant, so the whole time they’re looking at Goku using their scouters, Jeice and Burter are baffled, and it takes Ginyu to point this out to Jeice what it was Goku was doing. Vegeta even picks up on that since he had honed his ki sensing abilities after the Earth debacle…and yet Goku somehow forgot all this as well as image training.
Also Goku’s not entirely dumb. He’s as naïve and as gullible as a puppy sometimes, evidenced by when he fell for Zamasu’s ploy to intentionally anger him and have him start pummeling Goku Black, giving him that zenkai boost, but he’s not dumb when it comes to understanding how to fight and how to train. He may not always have the tactical sense Vegeta has, but he can pick up on techniques just by watching and experiencing them as we saw with even as far in as Hit, and he can formulate how to counter or take advantage of his enemy’s blind spots which we see numerous times in OG and Z. Yet they keep dumbing him down when it comes to martial arts even though that’s like the one thing he’s good at.
43:30 Right? It’s not something that Master Roshi or King Kai ever really taught him, and he didn’t pick it up during his travels after his first tournament either. That makes sense for him to not know. Closest we get is his training with Kami and Mr. Popo which is how he learns about mediation and image training, but he was taught about unnecessary movements there, not so much moving without thinking.
45:35 Also Vegeta was technically being assisted by Babbidi’s magic so I would argue that much in the same vein that Vegeta’s loss on Earth was not technically Goku’s win since he had outside help from Krillin, Yajirobe, and Gohan, Goku’s loss to Majin Vegeta was not Vegeta’s win. We also know that for both characters they don’t like having outside assistance in their victories, that they’d rather defeat their opponents one on one which is why Fusion comes so hard for them, especially for Vegeta. We saw that when Goku let Vegeta leave Earth initially because Goku wanted to be able to beat Vegeta on his own. We saw how much Goku initially hated SSG because he needed the help of his friends and family to get it, that he couldn’t achieve it on his own and without the ritual. We saw that Vegeta didn’t like that he needed Babbidi’s magic to give him the edge against Goku and that even then it wouldn’t have been enough because Goku was still holding back with SSJ3.
45:55 Goku has effectively won every fight Vegeta was unable to win on his own, all by himself too (discounting everyone lending Goku their energy for the Spirit Bombs he’s hucked). Goku beat the Ginyus. Goku beat Freeza. Goku beat Kid Buu. Goku was able to go more evenly against Berrus. Goku beat Hit even after Hit improved his Time Skip while Vegeta couldn’t even deal with Hit’s normal Time Skip. The opponents that Vegeta beat and Goku couldn’t because of outside circumstances, Vegeta never took pride in that. He didn’t gloat with Android 19’s defeat because Goku was crippled by the Heart Virus. He wasn’t happy with beating Frost because Frost poisoned both Goku and Piccolo and was a cheater. The one time he did beat someone Goku could not defeat while unhindered was Golden Freeza, and Vegeta could not have felt more proud until beating Goku in this movie because that was the only time since first leaving Earth that he had been able to say he beat Goku at his best by proxy of beating someone who beat Goku at his best, and that’s why it pissed him off to no end that Goku stole the kill against Freeza even though Goku had to do that since Vegeta was blinded by that achievement.
47:20 I imagine they don’t power up beyond base form at all. The point was to try to demonstrate to Broly how to fight and have fun without getting enraged, and when does Broly get really enraged? When he goes Super Saiyan. Same as Kale, and they both saw Kale when she went berserk during the ToP. They know it’s going to take Broly some time before he’s able to get to the same level of control over his rage and powers that Kale has over her own.
Also if Goku were able to access UI at this point and used that, I imagine that Vegeta would be the one collapsing first. That all said, still kind of weird for Vegeta to feel that good about his win when neither of them were purposely giving their all, but I don’t doubt that there’s still some kind of satisfaction in besting your rival when the playing field is even like that and also they wanted to put on a good show for Broly.
50:05 Basically doing what she wanted to do in Super Broly with wishing herself to be 2 or 5 years younger while also taking Freeza’s idea from Super Broly to have people collect the Dragon Balls on her behalf in secret.
51:35 What we’re really saying is that this is totally Sabat’s movie. Piccolo’s the main character, Vegeta gets a legit win on Goku, and Shenron gets to say “there, your butt’s perky.”
53:01 I guess he saw merit in Goku’s plan to have Gohan fight Perfect Cell? Wasn’t he the most outspoken about that plan though?
54:55 Isn’t it because of Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Super Heroes already being things?
57:11 I mean it makes sense since the Gammas were designed in the image and the ideals of Super Heroes not unlike Mr. Satan and Saiyaman. They genuinely believe that they and the Red Ribbon Army are forces of good.
58:11 I wouldn’t have minded if that was the killing blow against Cell MAX honestly even if it was Gohan and Piccolo who did the majority of the work. Would’ve been a good end for Gamma 2 and a payoff for his development.
59:00 Like it’s such a TFS joke but it also makes perfect sense. It’s more for intimidation with a hint of practicality. It’s not a power boost like the Oozaru. However, it’s easier to not get crushed when you’re bigger.
1:06:26 Two things I can see why it wouldn’t be so hot in Japan right now: 1. One Piece Film Red came out recently, and that has been doing some big numbers, and 2. ‘Rona is running more rampant in Japan now for some reason despite still being closed off to all but scheduled tourist groups.
1:05:20 I mean Saiyans are really the only ones who do some growing physically and not just in transformations either. The only non-Saiyans who grew up offscreen after undisclosed amount of time are Chichi (who we don’t see in a very very long time so that’s more believable), Krillin, and maybe Freeza after his introduction as the new ruler of Planet Vegeta. Maybe also Bulma but she hasn’t changed that much from her teen design, less so than Krillin anyhow.

You have to consider what he considers winning/losing
The Saiyan saga battle was a loss for him. He had to go Great Ape just to win. When his Galick Gun was overpowered, he lost. Goku, that low class scum, was stronger.

Consider that Piccolo has been in base form since the start without any form changes or potential unlocks. He merged with Nail and rejoined himself with Kami but that's as far as it went. He's trained just as hard as Goku or Vegeta with no super power up payoff. The saiyans get magical power ups left and right and he got nothing. The only problem I have with it is that it took this long. But its no less silly or contrived than Goku getting god powers, SS, Zenkai boosts or any of the other wacky stuff.

The thing I love about Super Hero is it feels more like an actual movie than any anime movie (that's attached to a series) I've seen before. It doesn't feel like a bunch of episodes of a show strung together, or just fighting. It also has maybe the best fighting animation I've ever seen. By slowing the action down it makes it feel more impactful and powerful.

I want a movie with Buu, Krillin, 18 and 17 as the main cast.
You could also throw Tien, Chaotzu, Yamcha, Marron, Mr. Satan in there and maybe introduce 17's family.
Some ideas that might be bad or good: 1. Power Up for Krillin. 2. Turn Fit Buu into a transformation for Buu. 3. 18 + 17 Fusion 4. Mr. Satan learns Ki
P.S.: I think a movie about the four of those could be really fun.
Edit: With Fit Buu I mean the muscular form he had for just one episode in Super. He lost it by eating and fell asleep which ment he couldn't fight in the T.O.P.

Okay talking about the new Gohan form: That and Cell MAX were both probably my biggest headaches in the film.
They 100% wanted to pander to the nostalgia of Gohan going Super Saiyan 2 against Cell for the first time again, and the nostalgia baiting is exactly why Gohan's new form looks so stupid.
As you mentioned, the establishing shots of the form don't look so bad. They essentially made it a 1 for 1 recreation of his silhouette during his time as SSJ2 against Cell. The problem with that is the fact that he was about 60% of his current height when the Cell fight took place... In order to make the 1 for 1 recreation of that look, they had to MASSIVELY SCALE UP HIS DAMN HAIR.
I think they could have taken a route that was trying to pander to the Cell Saga Gohan fans just a tad less in order to make that design not look as strange as it does up close.

it's quite interesting because this is the first time I've really seen anime REALLY use pure 3D well, and not just in a 'it looks good' way, but a 'they're taking advantage of the unique strengths that 3D animation can offer relative to 2D.'
Anime's had a REALLY hard time getting over the 3D hump, because even as far back as 2006 we had Western animated shows, even ones on mediocre budgets that made better use of 3D as a medium,
while I wouldn't heartily recommend it as a series, the writing is corny and characters a bit grating, Galactik Football, a french cartoon from 2006 has some STUNNINGLY good 3D cinematography and amazingly weighty, solid animation in its football sequences,
so while I was loathe to see DBZ make the switch to 3D, it is well worth it because I feel it's a big part in getting over that long-standing hump, these fight sequences arent' choreographed or shot like they're in 2D but rendered in 3D as a dodge, they were planned, directed and animated to take full advantage of the medium.

If they can strike a balance between this 3D and Lupin III The First’s, I think that would be the best for productivity and visuals, because while the latter looks gorgeous, it must take a really long time to make by comparison to Super Hero’s, and we know that Super Hero’s 3D has room for improvement too.

However, even when he harnesses the mythical power of motivation, it's for one fight at most before returning to the somewhat disappointing status quo.
