I practice Japanese Sōtō Zen and my teacher once said that apart from the fact that the fat Buddha is a kind of deity in China, it may also come from the last years of Śakyamuni Buddha's life, when a lot of woman was chasing him and deliberately gained weight to be less attractive. My teacher could not know it, because he's not a expert in Chinese Buddhism. And it turns out that the fat Buddha is a completely different person from around the 10th century. Thank you.
Mr Burglinster, thanks for your informative.video. But I like to correct your commentary on the " Fat Buddha". He is called Ju lai Fo in Chinese or the Coming Buddha (Metreiyya Buddha in Pali). During this Gautama (Siddharta ) Buddha's Dispensation, the Meitreiyya was an Arahant ( one of the Buddha's 84,000 followers during his lifetime who had achieved Nibbana). But because he was so well developed in Metta ( Loving Kindness), women were drawn to his "attractive" nature. But sonce he had vowed to succeed in his search for tge Truth, he decided to make himself fat and ugly to discourage attraction to women. The other Arahant who developed this "Metta" power during the Buddha's time was Sivali. Both this 2 Arahants are now regarded erroneously as "Patron Saints of Wealth" by Chinese in the case of the Metreiyya Buddha and amongst the Sri Lankans, Thais and O believe other South East Asian Buddhists. I am just a Buddhist follower. Actually Buddhism cameto China by 2 routes - one the northern route through the Kushan (Greco- Bactrian) Empire via the Land Silk Road to the Dunhuang Caves and Xian (China). This version of Buddhism is called the Mahayana version which is greatly influenced by the Kushan interpretation of Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism exerted a great influence on Chinese Buddhist practice. Buddhism also came from South India through the Maritime Silk Road via Sumatra. It was Rev. Boddhidharma who was the head of Buddhist Council (started by Maha Kasappa) who brought the original teachings of the Buddha to China circa 5th Century. It was called Chan (Zen ) in Chinese as it stressed on Bhavana (Buddhist Meditation) and the Vinnaya (Buddhist Monastic Rules). Rev Boddhidarma's successors in China were called Buddhist Patriarchs - The last known was Rev.. Hui Neng, the 6th Patriarch of Chan Buddhism. Rev Hsu Yun, who died in 1959 was one of great contemporary Chinese Buddhist monks.
I have been to all those 3 temples in the video. They are beautiful but not the best Chinese Buddhist Temple. The best ones are in Shanxi Province with 1000-year-old buildings, statues and wall paintings!!! Please come to visit!
As a confused Christian who is already questioning creation, i’m intrigued by shintoism and buddhism. Not that im going to convert and start worshiping statues but I luv that buddhism mainly teaches about the way of life instead of brainwashing ppl to believe there is a higher being
In Buddhism we don't worship statues. We worship who the statues represent, the enlightened ones. And don't call me a pagan now, Christianity has 3 gods and some Christians pray to saints and to Mary (sry if this seems offensive but tbh you did insult my religion first)

It's interesting to note that several Thai Buddhist statues are in this particular monastery. Thai people tend to be Theravadin and not part of Vajrayana Buddhism. This is much like finding a Greek Orthodox icon in a Baptist Church. Not unheard of, but unusual.

I practice Japanese Sōtō Zen and my teacher once said that apart from the fact that the fat Buddha is a kind of deity in China, it may also come from the last years of Śakyamuni Buddha's life, when a lot of woman was chasing him and deliberately gained weight to be less attractive.
My teacher could not know it, because he's not a expert in Chinese Buddhism.
And it turns out that the fat Buddha is a completely different person from around the 10th century. Thank you.

But I like to correct your commentary on the " Fat Buddha".
He is called Ju lai Fo in Chinese or the Coming Buddha (Metreiyya Buddha in Pali). During this Gautama (Siddharta ) Buddha's Dispensation, the Meitreiyya was an Arahant ( one of the Buddha's 84,000 followers during his lifetime who had achieved Nibbana). But because he was so well developed in Metta ( Loving Kindness), women were drawn to his "attractive" nature. But sonce he had vowed to succeed in his search for tge Truth, he decided to make himself fat and ugly to discourage attraction to women.
The other Arahant who developed this "Metta" power during the Buddha's time was Sivali. Both this 2 Arahants are now regarded erroneously as "Patron Saints of Wealth" by Chinese in the case of the Metreiyya Buddha and amongst the Sri Lankans, Thais and O believe other South East Asian Buddhists.
PS: For the definition of "Metta", do read The Karaniya Metta Suuta.

Actually Buddhism cameto China by 2 routes - one the northern route through the Kushan (Greco- Bactrian) Empire via the Land Silk Road to the Dunhuang Caves and Xian (China). This version of Buddhism is called the Mahayana version which is greatly influenced by the Kushan interpretation of Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism exerted a great influence on Chinese Buddhist practice.
Buddhism also came from South India through the Maritime Silk Road via Sumatra. It was Rev. Boddhidharma who was the head of Buddhist Council (started by Maha Kasappa) who brought the original teachings of the Buddha to China circa 5th Century. It was called Chan (Zen ) in Chinese as it stressed on Bhavana (Buddhist Meditation) and the Vinnaya (Buddhist Monastic Rules). Rev Boddhidarma's successors in China were called Buddhist Patriarchs - The last known was
Rev.. Hui Neng, the 6th Patriarch
of Chan Buddhism. Rev Hsu Yun, who died in 1959 was one of great contemporary Chinese Buddhist monks.

I have been to all those 3 temples in the video. They are beautiful but not the best Chinese Buddhist Temple. The best ones are in Shanxi Province with 1000-year-old buildings, statues and wall paintings!!! Please come to visit!
As a confused Christian who is already questioning creation, i’m intrigued by shintoism and buddhism. Not that im going to convert and start worshiping statues but I luv that buddhism mainly teaches about the way of life instead of brainwashing ppl to believe there is a higher being

It's interesting to note that several Thai Buddhist statues are in this particular monastery. Thai people tend to be Theravadin and not part of Vajrayana Buddhism. This is much like finding a Greek Orthodox icon in a Baptist Church. Not unheard of, but unusual.
