I have done the pilgrimage three times and wish I could afford to do it again. I visited all of the sites and found many changes over the years. The fortress built around the traditional site of the Buddha's birth came into being after my first visit. At Bodh Gaya the excavation pit which contains numerous stupas was also filled at night with tens of thousands of butter lamps. The first time I went I travelled by car with Shantum Seth who afterwards began leading tours of the sites. He's very knowledgeable, is a Buddhist and in my mind he's a Bodhisattva. He can turn 10 strangers into 10 friends in a couple hours. If you want to go, travel with him. Some of the sites, if you catch them wrapped in mist, will virtually transport you back to the time of the Buddha.

Truly amazing and beautifully presented. I have been fortunate enough to send my parents to Bodh Gaya for pilgrimage. As for my late beloved father, it was his ultimate wish to visit Bodh Gaya and that was fulfilled just a year before he left us all. Seeing this made me to miss my dad and I cried of joy for what I have done for him. I could feel the happiness he was experiencing then.

What an honor and enlightenment to digitally participate in this holiness of the pious people and the Buddhist Monks and Nuns! In physical life, while a Professor at Phetchaburi Rajabhat University, I spent some well-allotted time and money in the Buddhist Temples of Thailand from the more casual town Pagoda Temples to the stricter mountain monasteries; even meeting a variety of holy Buddhist Women Nuns, though of course with complete chastity and holy sanctity I assure you.

Thank you for sharing this very educational and well edited documentary. I have studied a lot about the life the Buddha. Now I can place the events and teachings of the great teacher. I visited Bodh Gaya and Varanasi in 2003. There were many Hindu pilgrims then. These sacred places belong to all followers regardless of nationality.
I've watched a lot of documentaries on different aspects of Buddhism, and this is certainly one of the best. Really nicely made. Hope to see more such productions from you guys.

Religion is a foreign phenomenon to India, there is no strict distinction into believers and non-believers. What Indians have been doing is accepting wisdom from all sides, that's why you see a Hindu doing Buddhist Vipassana or bowing down to Bhagwan (God) Guru Nanakji, founder of Sikhism or to Lord Mahavir, founder of Jainism. And this works both sides, many Sikhs will be visiting Hindu temples, Jains celebrating Hindu festivals, in fact Buddhists monks doing rituals in Hindu temples etc. You must have seen in many ashrams worldwide, there is an idol/picture of Jesus Christ, coz religious conquest has never been a thing in India.

Siddhartha Gautama become Buddha( enlightened ) in bodh gaya ,india.started his first teachings in saranath(india) and left his body in kushinagar(india).world oldest university is nalanda is in india. many Buddhist monks, scholars came here to study from all over the world.Buddhism started in india.
The university was destroyed in about the 13th century by a Turco Muslim. There has been a project to build a new one but corruption has prevented that from happening.

@@tomtchao5794 Buddhism was never destroyed. Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism are not religion per se, they are ways of life. Buddha never claimed to be Buddhist. What happened all these centuries is continous assimilation into each other, for example many Buddhists adopted Hindu rituals slowly and formed Mahayana Buddhism.
Reagrding destruction of university, the present day region of Up/Bihar where most of Buddhist pilgrames are located had numerous Hindu kings after Buddha, tell me why's it so that university which remained for millennia under Hindu rulers, got destroyed just few years after Islamic invasion.
Btw, Bhagwan Buddha is worshipped as 10th incarnation of Vishnu.
Also, please understand there is no definition for the term Hindu, its just the indic culture. Hindus never claimed themselves to be Hindus, it was outsiders (Greeks, Persians) who called them Hindus bcoz religion as a sense of idenity is foreign to India. Spirituality is considered a personal thing in Dharmic traditions not meant to be treated as a commandment for masses like it is in abrahmic traditions.

Amaravathi near Vijayawada in India is one of the sacred bhuddist place . An ancient Stupha was there and now there is a museum and very big statue of Buddha and a park . Nagarjuna konda an island museum with lot of bhuddsit relics is not far from here
