Ive found as a very later starter at 53, that the progress comes slow indeed. Ive been drumming for a year and a half now. I try to do at least an hour a day. Most days its more. I do see progress though. I could not do successive 16th note bass drum bars, a year ago. I could not do it. My foot could not take it or even do it. Now i can manage pretty close to 30 bars at a resonable pace of 126 bp/m. U2's A Man and a Woman is a killer on my foot and i try to do that song every day.
Some days i cant string anything together in that song. Today i managed to do nearly 30 seconds at that pace.
I can read music so i did manage to learn how to do that. Progress for younger people will no doubt be faster than what i have managed. That is ok. Its my journey. Not so long ago it was no 16th note bass drum anything. Nothing. Today it was 30 seconds of it. Cool. Tomorrow...who knows.
I warm up every day with one of mike's beginer grade,1 to 3, routines. This one ua-cam.com/video/iFLoXcMkyOo/v-deo.html I am a grade 3. Still cant play lots of grade 3's that are fast but i can play quite a few that are less than 120.
Drumming to an extent is this. You get what you put in. Study well and dont neglect any one thing. While it is ok to walk away from the kit every once in a while if the gaps are big then you will notice it. Even just a few days away from the kit and my timing goes out the window.

@davegill7614 As a rough estimate how many hours per week do you practice? I've been playing for about 4 months now. I'm definitely getting the hang of things but I'm figuring out there's soooo much to learn about drumming.

@lobbyrobby Hi mate anywhere between 3 and 8 hours depending what I have on...I've got to grips with the moeler technique now..that took a while...my enemy is speed on the high hats...I'm comfortable at around 135bpm on 8th notes on high hats....so that does cover a lot of songs I can play....I guess higher speeds will come with time....I'd like to play more but doing grade 7 piano aswell so that takes up more time
