- Jane Austen's beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending is reimagined in this delicious new film adaptation of Emma. Handsome, clever and rich, Emma Woodhouse (Thoroughbreds' Anya Taylor-Joy) is a restless "queen bee" without rivals in her sleepy little English town. In this glittering satire of social class, Emma must navigate her way through the challenges of growing up, misguided matches and romantic missteps to realize the love that has been there all along.

The dad is just the cutest. He just doesn't want anyone to leave. And why would they when he has such a big house? Lol
Yes 😭😭💔 He doesn't want to be left alone!
Mr. WoodHouse’s character hates change.
Yup, I also wonder about the big estate like this..is that common in UK? I also noticed for this kind of era films, it's either son (pride & prejudice) or daughter (downtown abbey) will be entitled to inherit the estate..how they decide between that? 🤔
@@azwasaaidns3936 that's the worst part. Only the first borne gets the estate. The other siblings don't.
@@chummychimchim in Emma Emma Woodhouse is the 2nd daughter.
The thing I enjoyed most about this movie was how many times small comedic moments made me laugh. Just a brief facial expression or a line that’s witty. Not many movies had me laughing as much as this did.
It is the beauty of Jane Austen's quick wit
Ditto
Yeah i was laughing the whole time I first saw the whole movie it was so well done
Innocence. In No sense 🤣
And when he says "For in thy SIGHT!!!!" and yells put that last word, I still roll around laughing 😁
Its like a cake filled movie. Everything is in vivid color
That all pink room in the beginning just about made me giddy and want to Jump into the screen! 😊
Shabby chic.
It’s too clean. Unrealistic of the time . Pride and Prejudice the film has a better period feel . Things were not this clean then
I didn’t care much for the pastel look of everything, as people wore vivid dark colors even then, and the houses at the time showed that style. But, the clothes were fantastic is silhouette and trend!
@@Udontkno7 Well the interiors of Wilton house (pictured at 5:22) cannot be described as pastel, look at the Baroque “Double Cube Room” (decorated in 1653) at 6:09, or the “Single Cube Room” (decorated at some point between 1630-1645) straight after - not forgetting the two rooms before that: “the Colonnade Room” and “Great Anteroom” (although you couldn’t really see much of them). However the orange cloisters did fit the time period/ films aesthetic (having been installed around 1810). The houses/ people of the time definitely retained older styles, look at what was used to depict Rosings Park in the 2005 adaption of Pride and Prejudice; the Renaissance Burghley House (built 1555-1587), along with some of the Baroque interiors such as the “Heaven Room” (decorated in 1690), even Lady Catherine de Bourgh herself wore clothes/ hair of an older age. So of course not everything will have been redecorated in the Regency style, but I think it was important for the film to show strong attributes of the period in order to convey it successfully to the audience - plus I really loved the colours!
Bill NIghy jumping from the stairs is the best scene ever! Love Bill so much! Brilliant actor indeed
Bill is good value in everything. 8-)
True
Yes! I love him as Mr. Woodhouse. His other best scene was when he was anxiously asking if Harriet was dead. He stole the scene right there 🤣
I love his Mr. Woodhouse because he plays him not as a hypochondriac, but as a man who is getting old and his children are fleeing the nest. Mentally this Mr. Woodhouse is there and physically he is strong. He just doesn’t want change.
This movie is different to other Austen adaptions and I'm loving it. Like I love other Austen movies of course but often they take themselves very seriously and Emma is definitely a funny book and Dewilde definitely captured that humour within this movie.
Exactly! It is more of a comedy and they made it more so in the way they made it
It keeps the comedy, and even has the same feeling as Clueless
@@cataryad661 It really does! Just the aesthetic
@@cataryad661 Clueless is based on Emma. But I like Emma coz it's much more fancy. ☺️
@@miming6377 I know, that’s why I referenced it 😜 I think Clueless stands on its own pretty well though. Even with all the 90s references, it doesn’t feel all that dated - at least to me
Anya Taylor Joy continues to establish herself as an actress of pure grace.
Yea... plus she’s really hot.
right, i love her so much
@@haywoodjablomee6671 excuse me sir wtf
For me, she is the worst choice for the character of "Emma". You could never compare her with the brilliant performance of Romola Garai, who played the part in 2009. Yes, "Emma" is posh and snobbish, but never arrogant or coldhearted, like Taylor Joy portrays her. I could hardly watch her act...!
@@gerbiei.1370 Worst "Emma" ever!
Did anyone notice that the actress playing Mrs Reynolds is the one who played Mary Bennet in the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice?
Yes! I just realized that. Lol
Replayed at 6:21 just to verify. I thought I knew her from first sight but didn't note it until you pointed it out.
Well spotted.
I had to pause the video and say 'Is that who I think it is!?'. Glad I am not the only who picked it up!
Yes. She was also briefly in the new Four Weddings and a Funeral that was on Hulu.
The pastel color of this movie is insane beautiful
The cinematography, the outfits, and the music are the real definition of aesthetic. Love it!
Yes. The mise-en-scène.
It is all so beautifully done
Agreee 😭😭
The people who think this Emma is too snobby and arrogant must not have read or understood the book.
snobby and arrogant - yes! But never cold and aloof!
Oh please she is soo snobby!!! With a heart of gold! She has no idea she is snobby. She just wants to do good in the world she is in. I love her soo much. Mr. Knightley compliments her personality perfectly
Jane Austen herself described her as "a heroine nobody but myself will like". But yeah. Her evolution by the ending was wonderful.
Well, book Emma is very snobby, arrogant and a mean gossip to begin with. She is very kind to her family and close friends, but towards people lower in status than her she is very inconsiderate. She does manage to grow out of it somewhat by the end of the book.
I like Emma. I don’t care if she is snobby or arrogant. Austen was able to take a character with really nothing special and made her special.
you're trying to tell me that Emma was NEVER really fond of Mr Knightly, though she RAN to the piano to show off a little piece. ;);) I rest my case.
After reading the book I thought it was mainly because Emma loved to receive praise, even from Mr. Knightley as he was prone to criticising her quite often
@@monicabarkho999 Yeah because he would check and criticize, she always wanted to impress him most because everyone else was always so enamored with her.
Very familiar with the story (and have watched many of the movie-tv series version)...I will say this..the color palettes have been so pleasing with the new one.
Billy Nighy and Miranda Hart are the best casting for their role in this new adaptation!🌸 And, I agree, the colours ( decoration, costumes, fabric ) we, audience are in the middle of a (an over-)sweet, creamy and fluffy birthday cake 😂
Bought it today. One of my favorite films of all time.
Is it out already? When I ordered from the BBC it tends to not work on my BLU-ray
Sandra norman it’s out on AppleTV
I can only recommend the 2009-BBC-version of "Emma" with Romola Garai. Best adaptation ever!
"Poor Ms. Taylor!"
*Jumps from the stairs*
Oh Bill Nighy, you're the best 😂
Edit : I just posted the movie bloopers so go check them out if you want to see more Bill Nighy goofiness.
Ryota Arai
Seriously though.
That was the most appropriate entrance they could have given a lovable ham like Nighy.
Where's part 2 ?
I haven't watched the full movie yet, but I'm already loving Bill Nighy's spin on Mr. Woodhouse.
Bill is one of the few reasons for watching this disappointing adaptation at all...
Man’s great inNocence!
Man's great INNERDSsence.
Man's great in no sense.
@@DavidOfWhitehills No sense indeed😂😂
The colours are absolutely beautiful!! And when he went on to correct “innocence” I was like that would be me 🙋♀️ 😂
This movie makes me hungry for macaroons.
Imagine having someone to help you pull your own pants up. Lordy
manage to grow 80 years old and you might not have to imagine any more.
Julia Yenia hahaha that’s a horrifying thought
Buy the movie guys! The outtakes and deleted scenes are so funny!
And they will show how Anya actually managed a real nose bleed during the shooting.
And lots of Bill Nighy goofiness. That alone was already worth the price :)
Human can manage how to have nose bleed?
@@novisabillan9299 on cue!
I thought maybe they did something to Josh O’Connor’s ears for The Crown but no, that’s just what they look like
The movie was made in a format with camera and film that give higher resolution image, so the original record has a sharper and more vivid look, whether you see it in the theater, on DVD, or digital. This movie is loosely based on the Jane Austen book, but purposely adds many themes from modern perspective. See some interviews with the director which explain this. One example, in the movie Emma goes to visit Harriet Smith where Harriet lives. In the book, that never happened. There is a theme of breaking class division. I do not recall ever reading in Austen's books, any scene of a couple kissing. But this movie has such scenes Certainly Jane Austen never wrote anything close to the scene in which Mr Knightly is getting dressed. And the scenes which have dancing, which in the movie last several minutes and the characters display a lot of wordless expression and body language -- how could any of that be Jane Austen's book. And of course, Jane Austen had no music to her books. They were just words on paper. This movie uses music extensively, to add humor, sarcasm, and direct the audience attention to the actors' body language. A lot of the movie scenes involve the expression on characters faces. Extremely visual.
_And the scenes which have dancing, which in the movie last several minutes and the characters display a lot of wordless expression and body language -- how could any of that be Jane Austen's book._
Answer: easily.
Dances turn up in more than half of Jane Austen's published stories, and they usually are crucial to the plot of the character development. And yes, it is quite possible to describe body language, looks, impressions and so on on paper, and to do it well. Don't take it from me, you can read Mansfield Park, or Pride and Prejudice, or Emma, or Northanger Abbey ... it's not so pronounced in Sense and Sensibility, but it's there, too.
Use of body language and facial expressions turns up all over the place in Jane Austen's stories.
What the point of the added nudity was - I have no clue. To make it look modern, or risqué, or daring?
Gettting-dressed scenes can be great to give us a look into the world a character inahbits - see the "dangerous liaisons" movie with Michelle Pfeiffer. In this one? _Oh look, a naked bottom._ Also, I just learned that both romantic leads have something in common: they are bottle blond and get dressed in the morning. Clearly, they are made for each other!
No seriously: those two scenes looked suspiciously like somebody had decided that the movie nees to have something that sets it apart from a few dozen other Jane Austen adaptations, and it was that or slaughtering a pig on-screen.
I agree that the movie is extremely visual, but that kind of comes with being a movie. I just wish the director had relied on the movie being so very visual and tuned down the music, because that comes along like a sledge hammer, trying to point out how funny, ironic or entertaining something is.
All in all, this movie feels like the director didn't even expect the viewers to pay attention, so he made all the characters so in-your-face vapid, full of themself, silly that you won't miss it even if the movie runs in the background while you're playing Forge of Empires.
Jane Austen has a great many references to specific music in all her novels; fewer perhaps in Northanger Abbey.
Bill Nighy is a humorous treasure, he was actually so underused in this film! Anyhow, fantastic adaptation of this timeless novel!
FYI: Well, 5:30 min was unexpected! 😃
I know, that caught me off guard the first time I watched the movie😲😃
As much as I love the other versions of this film, this one is pure joy to watch!❤️ Hope I can rewatch it like it’s the first time!
I cannot stop laughing at Bill's reaction in 3:24
It's TOO--joyful!!!
hahahahahaha
The design and colors, the minimun details, everything is so esplendid!!!
thanks to quarantine and dad's 30years old bookshielf i became a reader i've never thought reading a novel before watching the movie adaption would bring me this much joy im definietly enjoying it
Why not 4k? It deserves the absolute best output! Loved it and saw it 3 times!
Emma is so aesthetic. I love everything about this pretty movie
Nothing in these comments indicated what I would see at 5:30 😂
Nice

Delightful. Quirky, the carriage inside was wonderful fabric. 💚

Is the bride the actress who plays Yara Greyjoy in GoT?
Yes
its so strange to see her in such a feminine look
That’s where I knew her from! I’d been trying to place her, thank you
She's also very good in Upstart Crow
@@Honey511Bee And in Gentleman Jack!
I just LOVE the moment Bill Nighy jumps down the stairs!
Bill is such a mood 😂😂
Nothing Anya can't do - action, costume, horror .... you just know she'd be great in a musical. Certainly an accomplished young lady.
Best movie going! Addicted to it for its photography, colour and music and wit. Outstanding! 👍❤️
agree. Costumes and photography are top notch.
The actress that plays mrs Reynolds is the same one that plays Mary Bennet in 1995 Pride and Prejudice!
It was just incredible and spectacular
😂 I see why they like the father so much
I liked Ramola Garai's Emma, but my fave will always be Kate Beckinsale - she nailed that role, and Mark Strong as her Mr.Knightley was FAB ! Great chemistry.
Canuckmom1958 I agree. I love the version with Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong best too :-)
Couldnt agree more!
That's my favourite version. This is too modern for me.
Completely agree. This is not a version which is likely to appeal to those who love Jane Austen's books. Why can't film companies leave well enough alone.
I had the feeling when I rented this movie that as much as I like Anya Taylor-Joy I don't think she carried this film well enough to compensate for some of the more boring parts. She was not portrayed as likable enough to offset her annoying petulance. In other versions we know she is somewhat a snob but she is also innocent enough in her high mindedness to be forgiven. In this version, she fails to be likable and one wonders what Mr. Knightly could possibly see in her. I didn't see any chemistry between the two and Johnny Flynn seems an unlikely admirer. and vice verse. I blame the director as all the characters are good actors but this version was not a good one and the gratuitous nude scene ridiculous and cringe-worthy...wrong parade.
That jump of the stairs is epic 🤣
This looks amazing
Colour positionings are soothing along other two modes as support which is light and Interior of each room presented.
Miss Bates is me if I ever were to meet ATJ.
"I am trembling again."
Hermosa produccion!
Emma is so savage 😎
Love any adaptation of this story which I have read but Kate Beckinsale/Mark Strong version is very good. Wasn’t prepared to like Gwyneth Paltrow’s version a few years later but that was excellent, too! Absolutely fav Austin film is “Persuasion” version with actress Amanda Root. You guys have got to see it!!!!!!
I love Bill Nighy! ❤

She is soooo pretty
When will this be on iTunes?? It’s $24 to rent!! Would rather just buy it
My favorite film 💞💕❤ ❤❤❤
O melhor filme de EMMA é com Patrow.
what song is it from the first scene?
The girl from Split!
It very rare to say "....is the best of its class". I say: A Room With a View 2007,The Winslow Boy 1999, The Merchant of Venice 1973 and EMMA 2020 are the best. Space will not permit more.
Assisto 50 vezes se passar amo esse filme 😍😍😍😍😍❤❤❤❤❤
22nd june it goes on Amazon ordered mine looks good
In truth I remember when this came out and wasn’t interested. I loved the book, I read it after I watched 1990s version lol. But I want to watch this now because I love this actress! She is extremely talented.
my favorite movie
Anya Taylor Joy in the thumbnail really exactly look like Elle Fanning.
Me gusta el coche de enma color turqueza parece y su relación con su padre y con la gente del lugar
Not Jane Austen, not Emma, definitely not Mr. Woodhouse.
why didn't Knightly attend the wedding, I wonder (i feel like re-reading the book, it's been a long time)
He was visiting his brother
I feel like frank churchill was intended for Emma. Note, knightly asks about him. He is jealous.
Does anyone know what are the pieces in 1:55 and 4:49?
Neue Version,nein Danke!!!
POOR MISS TAYLOR!!!
This Is A Lesson Of Skill; Designed With Great Purpose; For The Essentials; Which Can Only Be Described as Portrayed By "Johnny Flynn's-Knightley;" and "Anya Taylor-Joy's; Lady Emma Woodhouse!!!"
Why did the place the screen between the two? I’m not versed in this era 😂😂

Yes it is!
I enjoyed this version for its comedic timing, but my fav is the one with Ramola Garai as Emma and Johnny Lee Miller as Mr Knightley. They're simply sublime.
Love this film❤
I watched it twice on the plane! Simply love the different facial expressions of Emma in the movie.
A very enjoyable movie indeed.
Bill Nighy seems like Anya's real father !!
Isn't this like the 5th emma lol?
BUBBLE!!!!
Is Emma's father the great Vampire from Underworld? I forgot the name...Marcus?
Viktor.
I was not prepared for Mr. Knightley’s … person
I have mixed feelings about this movie. I don't get why so many lines from Mr. Woodhouse has been given to Emma. It changes their personalities.
Too many HD details are distracting, I didn't get anything about what they are talking about...
I´ve seen many versions of this movie but I almost got a heart attack when I saw him nacked
"I Shall Remember That; 'The Next Time That You Quarrel With Me!" Knightley; As Played By "Sir Jonathan Flynne!"
Cadê a tradução????
I don’t remember Emma’s personality seeming so proud and snobby in the book, although this definitely seems to capture the humour of her character. She is almost dislikable in this portrayal though and the behaviour shown in this clip seems hurtful - I can’t seem to recall that quality in the original character. Otherwise seems like a whimsical portrayal of the story. Curious to watch the entire movie at some point!
The whole point of the book was how snobby and childish she was, i would say she has a faster character growth in the book which makes her more likeable
Jane Austen wanted to create a dislikable character only she would like
She is even more snobby in the book, especially with Robert Martin and the Coles even if they aren't bad people. She lectures Mr Knightley too because he doesn't use a carriage like a proper gentleman lol
You def read the wrong book then lol she is dislikeable and snobby at most in the book and gradually growing
Wow....the priest is the same guy who did prince Charles in The Crown from nextflix.
He is the vicar or reverend not priest.
7:10
Love Bill Nighy.
I'm glad they omitted Ms Austen's famous words "happy disposition" from the title sequence, because this Emma does not have one. I think they lean into the air of pretention, the etiquette so much as to make her seem melancholy. And that is a different Austen character, not Emma.
Can we need yet another version of Emma?
Hahahahahah I prefer 1972 version.
"I see tectonic plates cascading"?
