The DEATH of Robin! | Batman: A Death in the Family

- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Batman readers were allowed to vote on the outcome of the story and they decided that Robin should die! As the second person to assume the role of Batman's sidekick, Jason Todd had a completely different personality than the original Robin. Rash and prone to ignore Batman's instructions, Jason was always quick to act without regard to consequences. In this fatal instance, Robin ignores his mentor's warnings when he attempts to take on the Joker by himself and pays the ultimate price. Driven by anger with Superman by his side, Batman seeks his vengeance as he looks to end the Joker's threat forever. Ultron 8 is a better mother than Jason's will ever be
"With great power comes great pain, BITCH"
That is the best line. Ever.
Magoloso love that!!!😂😂😂
25:00
No blood on MY hands. I voted "Live." And in the end, Jason Todd proved himself to be a hero worthy of wearing the ROBIN costume.
Having read for the man who has everything and the cult I agree.
Jason's Mom also admits to stealing money from the relief program she is working for in Ethiopia when he lets her known that he is actually Robin. That's kinds of a important piece of info in my opinion, especially when it comes to Jason's/Batman's themes regarding familial relationships, etc. I'm a big fan of the Comic Pop channel in general, but writing off smaller (but important) details of the story and just calling them "dumb" doesn't really do the book justice I think. There is plenty to criticize (like how painfully dated both the art and elements of the subject matter are) though, so don't get me wrong.
The greatest trick the bomb that killed Jason did was convince DC it did not exist.
Ah another rainy weekend, another binge session of the best comic book show on youtube
"With great power comes great PAIN, BITCH!"
I was laughing so hard.
I can’t believe they used to stand for 40+ minutes to talk about comics lmao
when they had the (900) number to vote for Jason to live or die, i voted for him to live.
back then it was a lot easier to avoid spoilers, so i was all set to read my comic hopeful he'd survive. when i went to buy the issue to see if Jason lived, the clerk at my (then) local comic store laughed as he gleefully spoiled the surprise before i was able to pay for my comic.
i was actually devastated! possibly for having the ending ruined, but mostly because i was REALLY hoping Jason would pull through.
now that Jason Todd has finally been brought back from the dead, i feel vindicated.
i must say that Dick Grayson is STILL my favorite ROBIN though. :P
+Myconius Maximus That is insane!
most definitely!
if you wanna hear something? years later when Grant Morrison killed Robin (Damian Wayne) in New52 Batman Incorporated #8, the clerk at the comic store i was buying from at that point in time spoiled Damian's death for me as well. so much for spoiler warnings.
(both comics stores incidentally went out of business)
i know many people do not like Damian Wayne, but i really enjoy him as a character. he was especially well written in New52 Batman & Robin.
at NYCC i had the good fortune to meet Peter Tomasi.
i'd asked him if he was the one who pushed for Damian's return, and he admitted that he was. you would not believe the amounts of praise i gave Peter Tomasi that day! :)
Sal what I don't understand is that when Jason's mother betrayes him to the joker they came in the back way of the warehouse and joker locks the front door sooo.
Whoops!
I honestly think the animated movie is better than the comics of him coming back: Joker kidnaps Jason , kills him and then Ra's Al Ghul brings him back to sort of redeem himself (he was the one who employed the Joker in the 1st place) and the whole story is much better and sadder than the comic.
I also wish you guys would cover The Multiversity or Final Crisis; those have tons of crazy shit that would be great to get reactions from you guys.
There's the rumor that some people back then cheated the system, to ensure that Robin died (calling multiple times, and so on)
Definitely some rich kids since it was a 900 number
UA-cam Algorithm = The Joker
Bat Issues = Jason Todd
Imma pour one out for you, Bat Issues. Taken away from us too soon...
Turns out someone set up an automated call machine that called the number and voted kill.
Sal forgot to mention Mar-vell as a permadead character who is still dead
a classic back issues. I wonder if the gang knows they are the RLM of the comic sphere. and that's the highest praise [plus I discovered RLM through Sal mentioning it many a many video ago]
These are classic videos for young comic fans to be able to see
Great Channel, just a little note, superboy doesn't have the power to punch reality, at that time he was in a "paradise reality" with another Superman, lois lane and alexander luthor (this right after the first crisis). In that reality he could see what was happening in the surviving reality and got mad that there was another superboy and things were happening and he would never grow up to be superman and experience life... So he punch that wall you were talking about which existed in that paradise. But no, superboy doesn't walk around potencially punching reality and changing things.
But the new edition has the aftermath of how Batman became so reckless because of the loss of Jason. We meet Tim Drake and how he goes to find Dick Grayson and gets Bruce and Dick back together. The follow up comics in the Death in the Family edition were really nice. I could be wrong they may have had them in the old one as well, but I was under the impression that they weren't.
And now Gwen is back. Waiting for Uncle Ben
Hector Navarro Already done, he came back during Spider-Verse and is living in the Spidergirl (Mayday Parker) reality now (he was an Uncle Ben from a reality where he became Spider-Man and he's the last person alive)
Hector Navarro not the real Gwen tho, it's like considering Martha and Thomas Wayne alive because of Flashpoint batman.
+Ike of Pyke
It would have been more appropriate to say Thomas from Earth 2, actually. Flashpoint is in a weird gray area.
They did in a way in spider geddon
Bringing a dead character back to life and introducing an alternate universe where the character isn't dead is not the same thing.
Please review Under the Red hood !!!!
Souhail A. They finally did it!!!
bro the guy in the green jacket cracks me up most of his dialogue is just "ohhhhhh" "mmmmmm" "ehhhhhhh" "ohh"🤣🤣
Found this show last night and fell in love with it. I was wondering if we could get the Onslaught Saga next and then Death of a Family, know little if Onslaught and I love Death of a Family
Hey Scott, thank you so much! We did Death of the Family, so I hope you enjoy! We will get to Onslaught soon enough.
TVLittleHouse thanke for the welcome and now I have some search through your... well Back issues of Back issues
Batman the Animated Series has THE BEST Batmobile To DATE. How could you miss that one? Though 1989 inspired it I believe.
I saw Death The Deluxe Edition behind your head Sal.
and now spider gwen... fyi im storyboarding return of uncle ben. it involves peter being framed for the murder of uncle ben and Ben used to work for oscorp and rises from the grave to become the green goblin ;)
Sal:" All roads lead to Batman." See,DC has been watching! For those who don't know what I mean, it seems Sal was paraphrasing the DC:METAL event.
It's rather amusing that fans will laugh at Superboy Prime punch a wall and shattering reality but are fine with the Barry Allen Flash creating a new reality via Flashpoint.
Still get a kick out of Ethan and Ben's reactions to things in comics that...guess I took for granted? Comics are weird. lol
I started this channel with Marvel videos only...today....I enter Bat Issues.
I did already watch the DCvsAvP ones, cause I love those shitty pieces of gold... fool's gold.
You guys are just awesome Ben is just hilarious as hell
Just watched Three Jokers so now I'm here. 😂
Dude I've been saying the same thing about Batman's no kill rule!! He should've been gotten rid of Joker honestly lol.
I think the ending of Death in the Family with Superman being mad at Bats for letting Joker die is funny since I just watched the Injustice video.
I gotta say, Superboy punching reality is badass and super lame at the same time lol. Under the Red Hood is my favorite animated superhero movie next to Flashpoint Paradox (nothing beats Batman with guns) lol. That being said, he should've destroyed the Joker lol I mean seriously.
Virgil Hawkins Completely agree with you, Virgil. Thanks for commenting!
One thing I've started to wonder, even if Batman doesn't kill, how come no one amongst the hundreds of other people Joker has screwed over kill him?
Marnette Ryes He's near that Batman level of badassery. You could say how come someone hasn't killed Batman yet?
Then again, it's fiction.
What's weird is that in Dark Knight Returns Jason had died.
2 years later Jason dies in the main continuity.
Ben reminds me of 1990's Jason Lee haha. Or maybe it's just the Mary Jane
I didn't vote when I read it. I thought, "Hey, I'm not getting paid to do this! In fact I'm paying YOU deadbeats for using this stupid 1-900 number because you're too lazy to come up with YOUR OWN ending so screw you!" What really ticked me off was finding out later that the idiots who called the number did it multiple times and they did it TO KILL JASON! One guy in an interview (in either Comics Review or Comics Journal or one of those comics review magazines) said that he called 12 TIMES to kill Jason off! I lost interest in the Batman title for awhile due to this stupid storyline! My hats off to you for your comprehensive review, Sal. You're a more disciplined reader than I am!
Thanks David! That's actually a fantastic insight. I'm honestly really glad they killed him off, as it established (as Ethan would later call it) "Batman's midlife crisis." I like that.
ComicPOP! My feelings toward Jason were lukewarm in that he was just another "sidekick" for Batman to "mentor" officially and just another excuse to prevent Marvel from stealing the name Robin (a la Captain Marvel)! Just out of curiosity, wouldn't you feel that Tim and the others also establish a mid-life crisis for Batman/Bruce Wayne in the same way as Jason's "apprenticeship?" Is Batman more effective as a "solo act" as The Joker stated or are Dick Grayson & Tim Drake right in stating that he needs a Robin to keep him centered and less likely to go "rogue" like ex-Dr. Thomas Wayne did in "Flashpoint?"
nah nah the tumbler was the best batmobile
This video is really old, but I can’t help but comment that when Jason gets brought back to life he DID have the same injuries as when he died, they just didn’t kill him. He wakes up in his coffin broken and with brain damage and getting hit by a car puts him in a coma. He then crawls out of the hospital and lives on the streets still brain dead until Talia finds him. His injuries and brain damage are fixed when she shoves him into the Lazarus pit.
Who watching this in 2019.
anytime there is a DC vs Marvel argument someone should just yell "Reality Punch"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
superhandsomepig REALITY PUNCH BITCH!!!
I give a shit about Spiderman... I give a lot of shits.
Thank u
TV Little House T shirt quote: "If I kill ONE person. Then I will kill EVERYONE."
Ben's voice, mannerisms, and joke delivery remind me of someone, but I can't quite place it.
Got it. Rob McElhenny from Always Sunny...
I read this back in the day. It was the biggest thing in comics at the time. Mouth breathers at church basement comic shows were selling these comics for $100+ each! I have now watched all the "Back issues"!!!
I read this comic earlier today, and honestly, while Jason's death was very well implemented and carried a lot of emotional weight, the things building up to that part were rudiculous like Lady Shiva being a suspected mother to Robin or Joker selling cruise missiles to Arab terrorists. Hell, the writer aparrently thought that Lebanese inhabitants spoke FARSI, an Iranian variant of the Persian language. The silliness got worse after the inamous death scene with Joker apparently being appointed Iran's ambassador to the UN as though an Islamic theocracy would be friendly with an American serial killer who dresses like a clown. Overall, A Death in the Family helped introduce readers to one of the most iconic setpieces in the Batman mythos but it's surrounded by racism, stupidity, and ignorance.
31:00 he did have most of his injuries such as flash burns and brain damage. and he wasn't replaced with another Todd he was resurrected. although the original idea for under the red hood was to replace him with a Todd from an alternate universe.
plus out of 10000 votes only 200 more fans voted him o die
My bad. I do remember him having the wounds and stuff. But I assumed he couldn't have sustained those injuries and still be able-bodied. So when he was resurrected, he wouldn't have like, a collapsed lung.
Best comic book show ever. Binge watching session has begun.
You mentioned Under the Red Hood, I really liked.
Lol "the ropes a little loose!"
One of the reasons they changed Jason's origin is he was initially a dick grayson clone
“All roads lead to Batman” did U mean the return of Bruce Wayne when history is actually just Batman over and over again?
If only more Spidey stories were good 😭
I started collecting comics again (well, trades) after watching this series. Book count so far: 1
Also, it took me a year to realize I have the same t-shirt as Ethan.
Another Robin bites the dust and I'm in a Back Issues marathon.
Batman vs Chuck Norris. Who wins?
sal,you can't just give spoilers out of other books while telling the story of the you've picked.I'm worried eveytime i watch a vid
Agree. I always watch the episodes after I actually read the book to have a deeper understanding on things but they just ruined 'Under The Hood' for me which I wanted to read right after 'Death In The Family'.
Now I imagine Batman making a hobo Robin
uncel ben as the puper goblin
8 years later...they didn't have chairs back then haha.
68k views any chance of the masks and hat 😆😂
I thought Jason Todd came back via the lazarus pit? Guess I was wrong all this time.
Come on guys. Year One? It's time.
This is my favorite episode of you guys! Every time Im bored I watch it, by the way sal what did you think about red hood and the outlaws?
Thank you! Do you mean the overly-sexualized Starfire initial New 52 launched series?
TV Little House Comics Yea... Well at least they taking her out of the book, and making her own solo series
I want that death book behind Sal and Ethan
This one! amzn.to/2EqooJd
More Tiffany.
I actually have one of the older prints where it still says Iran
9:30 the point is that if he kills the joker where is the line that stops him from killing everyone else like does penguin deserve to die or does he get a free 2 more murders like when does someone deserve death
Ethiopia isn't in the middle east!
With great power comes great... PAIN, BITCH! - resurrected Uncle Ben
Buy one of those plastic St. Patrick's Day hats, and draw question marks on it.
If you count alternate universes Gwen Stacy and Uncle Ben have both come back to life
They don't
UnchartedKnight01 kwas
Oh you know I click the cards ovwr bens head ...you kbow what video brought me here. HE GETS BLOWED UP NOT KILLED WITH A CROW BAR lol
I never realized how insane this story is
Also Jason's mom sold him out because she was also stealing money from the Humanitarian org she was working for.
Riiiiiight. Forgot the embezzlement angle.
Are ypu going to do "form the dc vault death in the family robin lives #1" comic?
"If we break 1k view in a week" You guys have come so far
And now, years later we get Joker War. Only it's Bruce that's broke and desperate.
In my mind
Heros kill only when they have to.
Superheros find another way, a better way.
I don't need my Superheros to kill, our heroic police officers and soldiers can do that for us enough
I want Superheros to represent something more, a brighter tomorrow
I feel like that's what it's all about, no matter how abstract you make it
8 years later.
Maybe if Batman gave Robin proper attire and armor he would have survived...Batman really is the worst
Gwen's no longer dead :D
Wait...if Dying Light came out in Jan, 2015 and this came out in April, 2014...this means that Ben is a time traveler! (jk)
are you guys really going to do dark knight returns? im kind of at the point where i like sals synopsis more than reading illegally downloaded digital comics lol
RE: The Ayatollah - They must have changed it back. I just bought/ read Death in the Family last week and it says Ayatollah Khomeni and that he is from Iran. And the Joker is the UN Rep for Iran. just FYI
Nice. Glad they fixed it.
It's Over 9000 Productions And also Spider-Gwen
*All roads lead to barbatos
9:31 the walking dead walkers too!
Sal saw it coming.
I'm happy to report that in the new deluxe edition the Iran and Ayatollah text have been restored
Actually the joker does remember his past. His childhood was very bad and his father was a major alcoholic. Then one night his father drank way to much, so his mother grabbed a knife for protection but the father got mad and took a knife and killed the mother. Then he went up to the soon to be joker and cut open boths his cheeks.
Sizzle you do realise that that was made up for the Dark Knight movie and is not considered cannon
Spider Gwen
ComicPOP! Sal, have you heard of the UA-cam channel, ItsJustSomeRandomGuy ? He does the "I'm a Marvel / I'm a DC" parody videos, and he also parodied Zero Hour, which you guys mention in this video (Even though its supposed to be about Batman, stay on topic! lol). It is HI-larious! You should check it out if you haven't already.
Bat issues huh?
Bat issues coming in 5 years.
Do DKIII!!!!!
We will!
James Kroplin HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
@superboy punching reality. omg.
haha maybe they are doing it in dead no more :D
Jesus Christ! You guys used to stand through the whole fuckin thing? Fuckin a. I almost can't watch it. It's making me tired. Also, yeah, Burton's Batmobile is THE Batmobile.
I have seen quite a few of their "review" videos, and I swear all they do is trash every single comic story they talk about by saying how all the ideas , plots, or characters are stupid.
+John Carlos Salgado Who are you addressing? ua-cam.com/play/PLDHGagKHrNsW3fJ3AA4uG7XnuVNQhRxkx.html
Its unfortunate the audience cares so much about Batman. I love this show but Batman is my least favorite costumed hero of all time. I watch these anyway because, fortunately, your show transcends the material it examines.
