Total trip down memory lane. Gen13 was one of my 90's comic book loves. While at the beginning it took itself a little too seriously, as the series went on the various writers seemed to realize, "Holy cow, we can write this like X-Men, only without the constant brooding." And nobody ran with that idea like Adam Warren. Warren's run on Gen13, including his various spinoffs like "Magical Drama Queen Roxy" and "Grunge: The Movie", are absolutely my favorite guilty pleasure comics due to the way he skewers pop culture and still tells a fun story. I would not hesitate to fangirl out to the extreme if I met Warren IRL, such is the amount of fun I had reading his stuff of that era. So, yeah, I'm not ashamed to say I loved the heck out of this book when it first came out, and I still do today. Loved your episode, and I'm hoping you'll cover one of the other TPBs at some point just for a different perspective. :)
Gen13 was a huge thing to me back in the day. I was a teenager and man... this series was over the top, weird, cool and, let's face it.. girls in tight, revealing outfits. I still have a bunch of these comics lying around and still love J. Scott Campbell's artwork, its amazing.
Ah Gen13 will always have a soft spot in my comic world. I still remember trying to go for the Roxy hair in 8th grade - didn't work but it was worth a shot! Either way - it could have been carried through better in later years - I didn't even realize they had a movie in 2000 until recently, would have been a fun cross over with Tank Girl
I was a huge fan back in the day and went nuts trying to find that movie. For some reason it never got any wide release and I had to watch it on UA-cam last year when I remembered to look for it.
This was completely a coming of age story for me. Kat becomes gen activated and gets a body but that doesn't change her own views of herself. She really has to come to terms with her new powers and her self identification. I was 13 when I read this so it could have effected my views and it has been a really long time since I read any of this.
do you guys think fairchild was what jim lee wished he was, i mean he went to Princeton and was a psychology major. i guess jim lee wishes he was an x-men
And if you look here, you will see the first Back Issues that was filmed in FUNNYBOOKS Comics. It is also the first "indie book" Back Issues. Sir, please. I don't want to continually ask you to stick with the group. Anyway, moving on...
I'm rewatching all of your backissues to help me fall asleep and pass the time. The old stuff is so good but it's great to see you all get even better over the years.
that's so awesome! Gen 13 was the very first EVER comic that i bought and it is what started my love for comics and always bring me nostalgia. Great job talking about the Gen 13, it was a cheesy comic, but i like! Unfortunately, as i live in Brazil, the comic scene here its not as big as USA, and to cut expenses the comics now a days are printed on a paper that resembles me a "news paper" but back in the 90's the quality was so much better. Well, great job on this video! as a fan i wish that the episode was more "complete" about the Gen 13, but as you guys said: there isn't enough story to talk about. (sorry for my english, as i said, i'm Brazilian and learn english by myself)
You did great, don't worry ;) Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Gen 13! Maybe one day we'll do a crossovers special, and Gen 13 can come back. Or if DC decides to put out a new series... ;)
I think this is a good concept and since the Wildstorm characters are now part of the DCU all they need is a good writer and a good artist to make Gen 13 shine.
I'm not familiar with Gen 13 and I'm sure these characters have nothing to do with gen13 but I'd like to know what comic they are from one is fat and blonde with two pigtails short like Layla miller (x-men) and one has a translucent pink/coral forcefield/orb surrounding his head and I'm pretty sure they are from image comics
0:29 Probably my favourite moment from Ben. And wonderful silent stares from Sal and Ethan, followed up by a great jump-cut. Unintentional comedy gold!
This video was incredible, i laughed a lot and learned a lot! I love the interactions and reaction between you guys in this video! Super funny! lol "spider god" cracked me up!
Gosh I wish I found you all 8 years ago I honestly think my life would have been different. Something about the 3(then fantastic 4th of you all Tiffany!), with pop ups from Ma and Pa; a few other gentlemen and ladies I believe, but the main 4 are just SPECTACULAR! I am 38 and started comics at my local store like most kids at 9 or 10, watching early cartoons like Tik, power Rangers, Voltron, Thunder cats, transformers; Wizard Magazine! Lol and so on. The last few years have been really hard on me and my small family, which has just became me sadly. The pandemic and isolation, plus health issues caused more need for escapes from reality, which for me has always been comics and superheroes, and I found comics explained first and then comicstorian maybe 5 years ago, but SOMEHOW 3.5 or so years ago and start of pandemic or just before, I saw an episode of back issues which SOMEHOW had been hidden...I have to assume subscriber count made Rob and Benny just pushed harder... But you all's quality and just overall demeanor, setup and explanations, plus relationships with one another ...honestly, 100 million subscribers wouldn't be enough. Thanks for being you.
Gen13 and Wildstorm as a great concept. The years of development and reveals of who was the child/children of each member of Team7 harkened back to the Claremont era of loooong story arcs.
I think looking back at Gen 13, it was the art that sold it. It is like a 90's summer film wrapped up in a comic book: not a whole lot of life-changing stories, but you're distracted and entranced by the imagery for quite awhile. Still, I think I am probably the closest to a Gen 13 fanatic out there: Got almost every issue, and some Do-It-Yourself Variant covers drawn on by Jim Lee and J Scott Campbell...and I'm expecting the super-rare red-boxed Artists Proof of the Variant covers anyday now.
thanks for doing this video, Im a big Image and Gen 13 fan. Brandon Choi didn't draw anything, he was the writer for most of the Jim Lee wildstorm books. He went to college with Jim Lee if I remember correctly. The whole book was penciled by J Scott Campbell and inked by Alex Garner. if the beginning looks different, its just because its his first comic book he ever drew and got better as the issues went on.
yeah i bought the dvd of gen 13 on the cheap at a con. i seriously hope dc or disney or whoever revamps that project and brings up to par with the beauty of what the comic was. PLEASE!
Nice to come back and find the genesis of former show Bat Issues, god rest its bright soul I enjoyed the brief period of two Back Issues episodes per week
because they only go by the stereotypes of image and dont follow everything that came after not the best thing to mention anyway since savage dragon had a severe drop in quality halfway through invincible would have been a better example but i see what you were going for
I love the early days of back issues since the crew would hang out in comic shops which eventually lead to filming while on the couch, much more comfortable instead of standing for an extended period of time
Fare child was in the superboy run of the new 52 she was one of the driving forces behind superboy creation then in a book called the Revengers and that was the last anyone ever saw of here and the only wild storm character we see any more is Griffter and only every now and again
TVLittleHouse Then you and your friends should see it before it...disappears again! Or maybe not. After I finished watching it, I can only say that It was interesting hearing familiar voices as characters in this cartoon like Cloris Leachman as that big German instructor and John DeLancie as the voice of Lynch. Even Mark Hamill was in it! He plays...nah, I won't give it away. It was one of the few genuine dramatic twists that I liked in this film. He probably did this around the time that he did The Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League Unlimited."
ComicPOP! Guys could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE show all the images you are talking about to the camera?? (Preferably before you show them to each other) I owned the first 10 or so issues of Gen13 back in the day and had recently seen the cartoon movie so I had a fair idea of what you were talking about. However if I had not I would have been totally confused and frustrated by what was going on. Watching you guys show the pictures to each other and talk about that picture for two minutes without showing me got pretty darn frustrating!!
TV Little House Comics Maybe you guys should sprinkle them in every three episodes or something. That way if you get tired of doing Batman and the other standards, you get a little break. I personally like these vids because I don't know anything about them at all. I never had the money for lots of comics.
One thing that I would like to see dc do even though I don't think they're going to do this is actually take all the issues of Jan 13 before the 52 and actually incorporate them into one omnibus collection. Shucks I want an omnibus of Wildcats.
Early foreshadowing for future installments: Superman Unchained in the first episode, Spider-Man: The Other here. This should help the completionists trying to piece together the CPBIU (Comic Pop Back Issues Universe).
In the beginning of the episode, sal talks about a show called "sal saids what". I never watched that show and am a little sad I can't see it since its not on the channel anymore.
The fact that Team 7 has an extremely nerfed side effect once they used their powers made me realize that The CW could easily adapt that as a show since there's an in-universe explanation on why they couldn't use their powers frequently and it genuinely concerns me.
Actually spiderman sticking to walls is vexing as well. The only reason why spiders can do that is that have tiny hairs on their legs that grip the tiny cracks in the wall.
100% of Gen 13 was our idealised respect by the authors. At the time everything sounded misterious and exciting. We buy each number excited to know more about the world But after many delays and umprofessional treatment we started to see that the book arent going no where, there are no objectives and what we tought that are mysteries to be solved was just bad writing without any planing. Each Image book at the time was a very interesting idea that never get to be really developed.
I remember when Gen 13 came out. It was a nice cross between Melrose place and the X-Men and was one hot product for awhile. Finding any issue in the original mini-series would cost at a minimum $30. Then they got overexposed and the series ran into a dead end in respect to new ideas. Still, it's weird they never made a live action film, TV show, or even a video game and all it got with cross-media was an animated movie that didn't get an official US release. DC owns the property now and if they wanted to they could easily make a good CW show with enough content for at least 4-5 seasons.
+Mark Cysts That's an excellent point-- I'm a little surprised there's no "We were working on this Smallville-esque show back in 2006" concept art or anything.
***** The animated film was alright but wasn't really that good compared to the comics. Hokey as they were in the 90s they had an appeal that could easily translate to a CW show, especially if B-roll superheroes like Green Arrow and the Flash can get their own shows. Besides, I'd much rather watch Gen 13 than Aquaman.
Plaguesque Eh, that's debatable. Sure they moved up a notch getting their own successful shows but neither has had a feather film released in a theater and Green Arrow was usually just relegated as a sidekick with heroes like Green Lantern and Batman.
Plaguesque Again, it's subjective. Sure, neither of them are obscure like 'Stray Bullets' or 'The Red Star' but before the shows you didn't see too many people dressing up as Green Arrow or the flash especially since Superman is faster than the Flash anyway.
I'd never heard about this group before, but they do sound interesting actually. I will say, I googled the characters, and you said that Fairchild is insecure. She might be more secure of she ever put on some pants...
fairchild and some other characters made it into new 52 outsiders but instead of trying to reboot gen 13 (which belonged in the 90's), it would've been wiser to move their stories forward. i collected gen 13 from the time it came out until it fizzled. great characters, cool stories for a teen to read then and their connection to the rest of the image/wildstorm/topcow universe. the team 7 book was great (as was the team 1 book) granted they never covered what teams 2-6 would've been, plus it connected to and showed the early days of other characters who had or would end up having their own books (deathblow, grifter, backlash) and team 1 connected to troll, glory, emp, mr. majestic and spartan. also lynch was more like nick fury as the story unfolded over volumes.
I'm surprised the comments arent full of comments defending it since this comic has a pretty big fanbase I see people defending it more than hating on it the same goes for 90s comics in general people love them just like the stigma that literally every 90s dc comic was terrible which seems to have be forgotten nowadays
its been two years and i am just not finding this. dont know what to say i liked the comics but to be fair they where what they where TNA and thats ok. i wish they had done more with it. although i have to say i didnt know there was a movie and i tried to look at it and i agree its not what i would have exspected. i can say i miss it and when i look back at these comics it makes me miss being young. i liked wildcats also and there cartoon was cool to me. but that was back when cartoons mainly only came on on saturday mornings.
Love this channel just want to say that whilst you were talking about Spider-Man and about his powers I said to a friend that he was bitten by a radioactive spider and he asked what happened next and I said as a joke that he died of radiation poisoning then I realised why didn’t that actually happen.😐😐😐
Why can't I find the old Gen 13 comics anywhere online? I can only find the latest series on comixology and I have seen scans of the old series and it seems like I would like it better. Do I just have to buy the old Gen 13 comics from Amazon or something?
Trenton Gilstrap Or a convention. I saw the original min-series at a con this past weekend for $30. Keep in mind-- in 1994 the first issue of that series was valued at $30-50. Ha!
Actually, haha, I do love the first run of Gen 13. its not perfect but its a nice read. More so than when DC got the properties and well haha that was a wondrous wreck.
QUICK EVERYONE WATCH the movie BEFORE THEY TAKE IT DOWN FOR NIPP,LES its so much better compared to the shitty comic. considering that it was even made and how obscure it is. everyone should also read adam warrens gen13 which is really fun
Nothing like rewatching some classics during quarantine 2020

Image was my generation of comics. I still have fond memories of this book regardless of how silly it was.
HOLY COW! I'M ONLY WATCHING THE SECOND VIDEO?! AND IT'S NINE YEARS OLD😃?! What a time capsule, this must be.
that's so awesome! Gen 13 was the very first EVER comic that i bought and it is what started my love for comics and always bring me nostalgia.

This is like the 5th time I've gone through the playlist, and I still laugh my ass off during the "vamp" convo. you guys are precious!!
These early episodes are pretty interesting seeing everything improving along the way, I love it

i remember getting gen 13 bootlegs back in the day...just found them along with all my comics i bought in the 90's
Gen13 and Wildstorm as a great concept. The years of development and reveals of who was the child/children of each member of Team7 harkened back to the Claremont era of loooong story arcs.
Going through the "back issues" of Back Issues, and Loving Every Minute Of It!
Fun Fact: Frederic Wertham, who proposed the idea of the Comics Code Authority, was actually a friend of Joseph McCarthy.
Okay... Who cares? He was a quack. Oh, and he was full of shit.
I think looking back at Gen 13, it was the art that sold it. It is like a 90's summer film wrapped up in a comic book: not a whole lot of life-changing stories, but you're distracted and entranced by the imagery for quite awhile.

Oh it was definitely the art that sold those books initially. And hey, I understand the love, man! More power to ya!
Around 33-34:00, BatIssues is mentioned for the first time , RIP :(
Love the intro! The whole thing was very entertaining! Also, nice setting!

Gen 13 is awesome! 💪🏻
ah man, retro back issues episodes are just a gold mine of tangents... I LOVE IT!
yeah i bought the dvd of gen 13 on the cheap at a con. i seriously hope dc or disney or whoever revamps that project and brings up to par with the beauty of what the comic was. PLEASE!
This is a brilliant summary of Image and Gen 13. I love that stupid book and I can't help myself. It's all nostalgia, but yeah...
Nice to come back and find the genesis of former show Bat Issues, god rest its bright soul
I enjoyed the brief period of two Back Issues episodes per week
"These kids don't have enemies, they have" job offers.
"Beating a dead horse" 🤣 🤣 I fuckin love Ben.
You guys talk about blood, sex, and pushing the boundaries of censorship in Image, but don't mention... *_Savage Dragon_*?
because they only go by the stereotypes of image and dont follow everything that came after
not the best thing to mention anyway since savage dragon had a severe drop in quality halfway through
invincible would have been a better example but i see what you were going for
I love the early days of back issues since the crew would hang out in comic shops which eventually lead to filming while on the couch, much more comfortable instead of standing for an extended period of time
Fare child was in the superboy run of the new 52 she was one of the driving forces behind superboy creation then in a book called the Revengers and that was the last anyone ever saw of here and the only wild storm character we see any more is Griffter and only every now and again
Midnighter have an ongoing comic series.
Here's a link to the Gen13 Movie on UA-cam:
GEN 13 The Movie
Nice! I bought this on a bootlegged DVD about a decade ago, and lost it somehow...
Me too! I bought it at a SF/Fantasy/TV convention in East Rutherford, NJ and I couldn't find it either. Coincidence? ;)
David T. Smith Maybe the producers have secretly procured every copy they could find so nobody could see it... They're coming for UA-cam next!
Oh cool you guys had a zack snyder filter back in the day!
The coolest thing I recently got of GEN13 was a near-mint issue 0 and 1 as the 3D version of issue 1 too.
Aw, I like when you guys do episodes not related with the Big 2
They're SUPER unpopular! But we love them, too!
TV Little House Comics Maybe you guys should sprinkle them in every three episodes or something. That way if you get tired of doing Batman and the other standards, you get a little break. I personally like these vids because I don't know anything about them at all. I never had the money for lots of comics.
***** Why would a hen get a job?
***** Wow, you really hate hens.
Allen Babylon wild storm is part of DC

DV8 is just 90's rad for Deviate.
This show is great I'm going to marathon all the episodes
+Trey Higgins Thanks Trey!
Here on my journey to rewatch the entire Playlist.
"Beating a dead horse......" That killed me
34:48 Foreshadowing.
Early foreshadowing for future installments: Superman Unchained in the first episode, Spider-Man: The Other here.
This should help the completionists trying to piece together the CPBIU (Comic Pop Back Issues Universe).
My earliest memories of reading Gen13 was parent's basement and Metallica. Seems to fit the target demographic at the time.
I watched this when i first discovered POP, and its just as funny and rewatchable today
Kinda wish the friends would shut up for a second and let the guy finish a complete thought before asking a question.
In the beginning of the episode, sal talks about a show called "sal saids what". I never watched that show and am a little sad I can't see it since its not on the channel anymore.
Oh man, Funny Books! That used to be my comic shop when I lived in NJ. That was back in the Blackest Nights story days. Good times. :D
"Herp-A-Derp, fun is not based on Gender."
well said Ben, Well said.
Gen13 was rad - it deserves a properly done continuation.
This video is over 10 years old, that crazy
The fact that Team 7 has an extremely nerfed side effect once they used their powers made me realize that The CW could easily adapt that as a show since there's an in-universe explanation on why they couldn't use their powers frequently and it genuinely concerns me.
This is an early gem by you guys! So good.

Hey Sal, doesn't Gen 13 sound a lot like Runaways
Gen13 was....interesting.
I enjoyed it.
lol just noticed the Vol 1 in the title, like you were ever going to do more Gen13
Chris Check you have been bested
The writing wasnt great but it was fun to read.
Read the series online liked it.
I used to collect Gen 13 as a kid, now i'm scared to go back and read them if they're really that bad
no way i completely forgot that this was the origin of the "Bat Issues" title
Ah, the secret origin of Bat Issues.
I'm surprised the comments arent full of comments defending it since this comic has a pretty big fanbase
I see people defending it more than hating on it
the same goes for 90s comics in general people love them just like the stigma that literally every 90s dc comic was terrible which seems to have be forgotten nowadays
its funny looking up gail simone gen 13 sucks didnt give me anything....
Most stigmas are unfair for every clone saga thier was also a starman in the 90s
:) Every comic was a JLA/Avengers crossover comic...WOW! Now that's a nightmare...hahaha
just gonna say image hasnt been like this for almost 2 decades since you guys dont mention it
you guys forgot to mention the wolverine ripoff
its been two years and i am just not finding this. dont know what to say i liked the comics but to be fair they where what they where TNA and thats ok. i wish they had done more with it. although i have to say i didnt know there was a movie and i tried to look at it and i agree its not what i would have exspected. i can say i miss it and when i look back at these comics it makes me miss being young. i liked wildcats also and there cartoon was cool to me. but that was back when cartoons mainly only came on on saturday mornings.
Ha!
Oh Lawd!!
Trenton Gilstrap Last I checked Amazon had some issues. I've been looking to finish my collection myself, and noticed some were decently cheap.
Thanks!
Was the Authority any good back in the day?

What makes you think ALL marvel superheroes have a healing factor?

Will we ever get a return to Gen¹³ on Back Issues?
If anything, we might re-do this episode.
Actually, haha, I do love the first run of Gen 13. its not perfect but its a nice read.
More so than when DC got the properties and well haha that was a wondrous wreck.
Jim Lee wanted that money, and to draw DC characters, so....
I though Rob Leifeld was fired from Image.
never even heard of this
I thought Valiant was the 3rd largest comic publisher.
+NobleThoughts Image is much bigger than Valiant, especially now with The Walking Dead and Invincible
I guess I'm thinking shared universe wise.
Hey! I'm a proud Gen 13 lol
These guys are funny.
Lol the stuff that was coming out when this came out
Gen13 is l33tsp3@k for genie.
What is the significance of that?
QUICK EVERYONE WATCH the movie BEFORE THEY TAKE IT DOWN FOR NIPP,LES its so much better compared to the shitty comic. considering that it was even made and how obscure it is.
everyone should also read adam warrens gen13 which is really fun
and the crossover with superman
sorry for all the spam but it wouldnt make sense putting it all in one post
