The problem is the student is still broadly correct if overly generalizing. Political considerations prevented the US military from attacking Viet Cong resupply efforts running through Cambodia & Laos (Ho Chi Minh Trail) and President Johnson largely prevented them from expanding operations into those countries for fear of provoking the Soviets and China. His demonstration, as he explains it anyways, supports the effectiveness of guerilla tactics, but what he actually does is really more of a demonstration of skill defeating the unskilled, which would actually cut more in the US's favor. Regardless, had the military been allowed to prosecute the war as they wanted it likely would have been far more successful, assuming all else remained the same. On the other hand it likely would have resulted in more civilian deaths and some of those political considerations the Johnson administration was worrying about may well have caused additional complications.
Came here to say something similar. General Giap's strategy wasn't to try and defeat the U.S. forces, because he knew he couldn't. And as proof, the NVA and VC never won anything above a company level engagement, as I recall. Giap knew that all he had to do was stay alive and keep an American body count in the news. His center of gravity wasn't on the battlefield, but American public opinion, because he knew western liberal democracies had no stomach for protracted war. In that sense, it was a genius strategy because it achieved his end result, but the human cost was dreadful, since it was something like an 8 to 1 kill ratio in favor of the U.S.. The Tet Offensive was a tactical catastrophe for the North, but a strategic masterstroke. Those "hippies", aided by the media (specifically Walter Cronkite), portrayed it as a signal of the hopelessness of the war, public support dwindled, and the rest is history.
Around 3000 Laotian people are killed every year by American UXOs since the Vietnam War, testament to Laos being the most heavily bombed country ever - more even than Germany during WW2. USA never declared war against Laos despite dropping more than a million tons of bombs on them. Staggering amounts of ‘Agent Orange’ were also sprayed on Laos rendering many parts of the country uninhabitable and causing major birth defects in thousands of children. Not sure about your claim that American forces were prevented from attacking Viet Cong resupply efforts in Laos. Perhaps you may like to visit Laos to see some of the victims of USA ‘not attacking’. The victims are mainly farm workers and children. Your viewpoint is that of someone trying to explain away an embarrassing loss. Laos sees it differently.
People forget that the US forced the north Vietnamese to a peace treaty. The infamous "Fall of Saigon" was the evacuation of the US embassy after US military forces had already left. In terms of raw numbers, the US dominated the NVA forces, but it was seen as a detrimental war and thus lost a lot of war support in the general populace.
"Regardless, had the military been allowed to prosecute the war as they wanted it likely would have been far more successful, . . ." The U.S. military had 20 years to "prosecute the war" in Afghanistan. Was it far more successful there?
