I remember Andy Klyde saying the first season guns were accurate for the timeline of Bonanza. The Colt 45s were used 2nd Season forward. There was also mention that the 1st season guns were heavier.
My husband was a firearms expert. The "black" gun likely had a blued barrel. Bluing is a chemical process that turns the barrel dark blue/black. I do not think it matters if a pistol is used right or left handed. There was implication, since Joe was such a quick shot, that he may have had a fanning gun. Your expert could better explain that. My husband lost the sight in his right eye and had to learn to shoot rifle and shotgun left handed. Aiming has to do with dominant eye. He had guns specially made to cheek in a left handed manner. I am born and raised in the west. It is said of the pioneers that they seldom used pistols but had rifles for hunting and defense. Rifles are more useful than pistols. There were outlaws who enjoyed gun-play but, I think, the idea with our westerns on TV & film, that there were a lot of shootouts, is false. History indicates the famous Shootout at the OK Corral was actually done with rifles and shotguns.
You just jogged my memory about 'Joe and his gun in pieces' ! :) In " Gift of Water' Joe also had his gun in pieces to clean it, and - watching Joe clean the barrel - is what gave Adam the idea to take pieces of pipe out to add to the construction of the well at the Ganther's family homestead. To put the drill bit down the pipe, so the dirt comes up the pipe, and out over the top of the pipe, instead of falling back into the drilled hole. Smart man, that Adam ! ;)
For someone who knew nothing about the subject, you taught me a few things. 😊
