This film makes me wish I were a child again and that we could go back to when there was still room to dream and we were a little more innocent. My uncle and grandmother went to see DisneyWorld as it was being constructed. She died shortly before opening.
Agreed. Anyone who has passed away in the last 10 years left a world for their children that was worse than the one they were born into. First time in American history that can be said to be true.
Lets find a way to dream anew, together! A world with room to dream is a world worth fighting for! Never say never, unless you're saying "never give up"! Peace & love, my friend! 💜
Interesting to see some of the ideas that fell by the wayside, or got moved to other parts of the resort later on-the Asian Resort pretty much vanished, the Persian Resort eventually became the Morocco pavilion of Epcot, and St Marks Square and the Venetian Resort became the Italian Pavilion in Epcot.
And the land meant for the Asian Resort was later used for the Grand Floridian. However, I think that they should revisit the concept of an Asian Resort. Maybe they could build it near Animal Kingdom as a continuation of the theming of its Asia land?
The Magic Kingdom, while is amazing and a great achievement, I would say that Walt's greatest dream was what he envisioned for EPCOT, not the one we ended up with, but what he truly saw in his mind. This is my opinion..
The development rooms are amazing. Today, those wall sized maps would be on a computer screen, being shared with the 50” television in the conference room. Incredible. Thank you.
Incredible! You guys are awesome with the work you do! I remember watching this way back in 1971 when I was 11 years old. It was the first time I was conscious of Walt Disney World and what is was about. Thank you so much for restoring this wonderful film for viewing today.
My family went to that preview center building show in 1970 (the building is still there, but is now a Bank). After leaving I remember we were all very excited for the grand opening! We also went to the wdw Grand Opening on October 25 1971 (my sisters birthday). I recall we pretty much saw and rode everything within about 4-5 hours, simply because there weren't alot of attractions open yet. Tomorrowland only had 3 attractions ready (speedway, If you had wings, and Mission to the moon).
THANK YOU! This is amazing! Incredible restoration - looks so good I would have had no idea the work that was put into this. 99% of this video was new to me, and I loved every second. I knew about the Asian hotel that was never built, but not the Venetian or Persian hotels! It was strange to see Henry singing the Ballad of Davy Crockett without Sammy his raccoon hat. :) This should be playing somewhere in Magic Kingdom every day!
love to take a crack at doing further restoration on this. ie. the scratch line on the left side. i've done some other restorations in the past but not as extensive. should be fun.
That target date Oct 1st, 1971 50 years as of this coming Friday Oct 1st. Its gonna be awesome the celebration 🍾 I'm all choked up thinking about it. I can't wait to come down
In 1970 my family went to the Preview Information Center and watched the show (we lived near Tampa). I remember when we left we were all very excited for WDW Grand Opening! The building is still there today, but is now a bank.
The preview center building is still standing at 1910 Hotel Plaza Boulevard, across from the B Resort and Spa. Over the years it's served a variety of different purposes - currently it's the headquarters for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).
"I do not make films for children... or, at least, not primarily for children." "You're dead if you aim for kids." "We design the films to appeal to ourselves." "The adults have the money; ... children don't have any money." - Walt Disney
WDW is a far cry from Walt Disney's EPCOT, but I've come around to Roy Disney's point of view--that EPCOT would have been too authoritarian and intrusive to have been tolerated by its population and would have continued to be an extremely difficult sell to potential investors and participants. Today, there's little point in erecting an industrial showcase for tourists when most companies can advertise their wares via the World Wide Web. Nonetheless, it's fascinating to get an idea of how the Florida Project progressed, and to see what roads were and were not taken, after Walt Disney passed away.
Does anyone find it strange that when you see this it is as if Walt Disney was going to put everything to do with the then named Disney World aka The Florida Project in close proximity to each other but when you look at it on google earth it is far more spread out then mentioned here why did they change their mind & why haven't they built more parks they have so much land that they could use I thought that was the whole idea to purchase all that land.
🤔 The one thing about this is that you showed the EARLIER scenes back then as opposed to the MORE RECENT scenes of the time. It would look as if you guys were WAY behind schedule... 😆
Josh, we will never claim to be the copyright holder of this or some of the other films we restore. RetroWDW is part of a Non-Profit funded by donations to obtain, restore and share footage such as this. This particular film cost nearly $1000 to restore and transfer; we want to share but we also do not want our films turning up in places it shouldn't. We have recently reviewed our watermarking policy and future videos will feature a smaller LBVHistory.org watermark.
Big fan of A24 and really wanted to like this film but I didn't. Those annoying spoiled kids never shut up and the storyline goes nowhere. It's a grotesque portrayal of America at its lowest. Don't waste your time or money!

So cool to see the ideas that did not ever materialize.
Absolutely incredible restoration work on this. Amazing job.
IF only Walt’s vision of what EPCOT was to be came true.

Absolutely incredible to have this footage in such HD like this! This is exactly like stepping back in time!
So interesting to see how the dreams/ideas played out into reality. What an ambitious project, being really the first of its kind! Thank you, Walt!
It is amazing how much the railroad station looks like the drawings for it.
The Magic Kingdom, while is amazing and a great achievement, I would say that Walt's greatest dream was what he envisioned for EPCOT, not the one we ended up with, but what he truly saw in his mind. This is my opinion..

What a massive undertaking. I went to Disneyworld 5 times in the 70's and i'm from upstate N.Y. so it was not just a short drive away. Great memories.
Thank you for this restoration! I absolutely love this DisneyWorld history!
Probably the greatest Disney video I have ever seen! I’m so glad I got to share the planet with Walt!

Their good creative Disney stuff
Wow this video is amazing! The early days of Imagineering and the designs for Its a Small World?! Wow!!
My family went to that preview center building show in 1970 (the building is still there, but is now a Bank). After leaving I remember we were all very excited for the grand opening!

That is so great. I never got to go, being on the West Coast. Now all the new things are old and discarded. . .
Fabulous!!! Not a scratch!
IN the opening shot, the gentleman on the left (grey hair) is Disney Imagineer and fine (concept) artist Herb Ryman.
Thank you for this! Such memories ❤
Fantastic! Thanks so much for these kinds of RETRO videos!
You can see in the edit of Walt’s talk at the beginning how they bastardized his vision of the “Contemporary hotel” and especially of EPCOT.
I get emotional watching this! Disney World is my home!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you. This is amazing!

The Disney magic that most of those without the magic in their hearts simply can’t understand.
Right! It’s not about riding as many rides, fighting over merchandise, it’s really about so much more...
Truly Amazing restoration! Thank you for sharing this! #RWDW
Awesome 1971 Project Florida film!!
Amazing stuff...I was only an newborn when they built it...wish I could go back and see it conctructed
This...is beautiful!
Love these old videos. I`ve been trying to find the History channel 2 hour episode of the building of Disney World.
Stayed at the Polynesian Resort in 88. Absolutely loved staying there :D
love to take a crack at doing further restoration on this. ie. the scratch line on the left side. i've done some other restorations in the past but not as extensive. should be fun.
You guys f’ing rock!!! So disappointed I’m going to miss the cruise in November. Keep up the great work.
l b Is it going?!

Simply Awesome!
"my father was the best of men" - Diane Disney Miller
Loved watching this!
Wish I was there
The videos are amazing! Congratulations to make this great channel! Love to first view.
Very nice work!!
Just fantastic!!
Thank you ❤
Loved this!🏰
They remember the project creative the Walt Disney world Animatronic
So interesting!!!
They mention at 4:00 the information headquarters and reception center. Does anyone know where that was, or if the building still remains?
Found it with help from www.omniluxe.net/wyw/prvwctr.htm
1910 Hotel Plaza Blvd, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

The building is still there today, but is now a bank.
6:27 Disney's Persian Hotel also never built because of the 1973 oil crisis
People used to dress so much nicer. Go to the parks today and 75% of the people look like they just rolled out of bed
This makes me want to cry for what Boob Iger has done to the park. Thanks for the memories, I have no doubt that Walt is spinning in his grave.
But Walt was cremated?
"Country Bear Revue...."
I loved that
3:59 Where was the Infomation HQ and reception center building located?

This is Awesome!
Sad, you can hear the strain in his voice.... the reception center still exist!
Also till this day he still does announcements
@1:28 Did Walt Disney say “tourists” instead of “guests”? Hmmmm...
You’d love to just tell him Walt stop smokin man!
Cool video!
Whatever happened to that airport idea?
"I do not make films for children... or, at least, not primarily for children."

I wonder why the narrator didn't compare Al Bertino to Big Al! Maybe the animatronic wasn't ready yet when this was filmed.
This was clearly produced after Walt Disney died. He would never have allowed certain aspects of this video to be made.
Such as..?

5:58 Disney's Asian Resort was never built because of the 1973 oil crisis
His dream was ruined when Igor put a skyliner in there so Walt gladly made it fail.
Hey, the Skyliner's not that bad.

Nice! BUT... jeesh, a bit too much noise reduction there maybe? Cutting off a lot of the high end making it sound like it's played out of a can.

👏👏👍🏻👍🏻😍
Only forgot to tell US how unbearable hot Florida is 24/7/335
An elegant film, for a more civilized age.
🤔 The one thing about this is that you showed the EARLIER scenes back then as opposed to the MORE RECENT scenes of the time. It would look as if you guys were WAY behind schedule... 😆
It's a really classy move to take something that isn't even yours and place your own giant-ass watermark on it.

Haters gonna hate
Got 5 minutes into the film and had to stop... Mr. Disney would NOT have been happy with the way Disney is being run at this point.. .it's disgusting!
Quite an inspiration. Fast forward to 2024, Disney undoing Walt's dream by actually planning to fill in the Rivers of America. What a disgrace.
Big fan of A24 and really wanted to like this film but I didn't. Those annoying spoiled kids never shut up and the storyline goes nowhere. It's a grotesque portrayal of America at its lowest. Don't waste your time or money!
Walt would roll in his grave if he seen the dumb-assery going on with his dream today.
