    Great to see you two back! I was thinking, for a really stubborn project like this one, it might be fun to hold a “fan day,” where viewers meet up and put our heads together and try to get the old girl running. If it doesn’t unseize, at least we’ll have a good time trying.

    ‘49 is a cool year for the Chevrolet. The torpedo back style is something you do not see much anymore. It would appear you have a very solid candidate for a restoration. Hope to see it run again.

    Welcome back! Been missing you all!
    My lake step dad gave a 49 like that to my grandpa after the clutch went bad. I was about 11 years old then. I helped him replace the clutch and he was going to give it to my oldest sister but she refused to learn to drive a stick!
    I loved the look and hoped it would be around for me to have but grandpa gave it to his brother in Missouri and drove it down to him.

    My wife and I enjoy how you and Christine get together on the will it run videos. I like how people like you who have a passion for antique vehicles to get these gems running again instead of rotting away in a field. Christine shows as much passion in getting Lula fixed. It just goes to show that a person with basic tools and some vehicle knowledge can get just about any vehicle running and driving again. We like how you and Christine help others to get their cars running. Great work to both of you. We look forward in seeing more videos.

    what a funky condition. I hope those stickers can be preserved eventually. those and the overal looks along with graffitti makes me think of it parked behind the university house for many years, used for graffitti, abused, and waiting for someone to fix it. and said someone tried to, but maybe fell sick or ran out of money and steam.
    I hope someone looks after it, it looks gorgeous! and that's me, a self-proclaimed Fordoholic, saing that. :)
    I'm with Christina there, I'd browse that property for a week, and eventually start to support the failing roofs and dig out whatever I could find... like that vending machine. it deserves to be resurrected! :D ooh, I love old things with history, and I'd spend a lot of time exploring those sheds and whatever is hiding underneath the leaves. :)

    The paint on the plug proved your theory that the engine was at least painted. I have only seen plugs older than that one time. I met a man in 2009 that had a nearly 100% original Model A that was his daily driver. I didn't believe him until he invited me to inspect it. The car still had the factory plugs and wires. The car was immaculate. It had been in his family since it was new, and had never even been restored or anything. It was beautiful, and he drove it on a regular basis. He said that he didn't drive it in bad weather, but drove it whenever possible. It was amazing. It was in nearly perfect condition.

    You may wish to try prying the crank counterclockwise, then clockwise to break it loose. Also, try suspending a weight on the end of a pry bar to keep a constant downward pressure. There's a cool vid on UA-cam where a '37 Chev had a cylinder so rusted it had to be re-sleeved. The owner used a vintage boring bar and that block cleaned up beautifully. It’s good to have both of you back after a short absence.
    Well you picked a real difficult one for your return. You we’re fighting an uphill battle with that one,…although to be fair the body panels looked in very decent shape.
    Your getting Scottish weather by the looks of it. Not the best conditions to be fiddling around with seized engines.
    It could be a nice car if someone was willing to invest the time and effort putting it all back together again, perhaps with a replacement engine?.

    The first car I can rmember as a kid was a 1949 Chevy that my family had. I was born in 1947 so I know the car was not new then but now no one is alive to tell me how old it was but I remember going with my father to pick up a new 1953 Chevy from the dealer so it had to be no older than four.

    Big E for effort buddy, but I believe that ole gal has given up the ghost. I wouldn't waste much more time on it. Even if it does start, it'd take far too many other repairs to ever make it drive again. The 51 Chevy is the one I wanna see you tackle. It has promise & deserves a new life!

    You might check to see if the motor is against the bell housing. With the way that motor is sitting it is a very good possibility. Also check for a mechanical Bendix arm. Can't remember on that car. Only worked on two like it and they were both brake jobs so I wouldn't know. Hope you get that car. It is worth having by far.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  Рік тому

      It does have the exposed Bendix arm. I had my finger on it at one point, and it is moving just like it should. I still can't figure out why the Bendix would not engage the flywheel, but it is possible that the drive gear is worn away. That would cause the same behavior.

    I bet at least 3 of the pistons are frozen pretty hard in the cylinders do to rust caused by water getting into the top of the cylinders either through the intake but most likely through that loose exhaust manifold . Of course the exhaust valves stems may be rusted in their guides as well. Only way to know the extent of seizure for sure would be to pull off the head which would reveal .out of the problem. And since the engi e was not faa tenedto the mounts it was just going g to keep flopping on You. Ha I g said all that if there are no cracks. In the block that 235 Chevy engi e would still Bea keeper. You and Christina di a great job especially you risking life and limb and putting in all that hard work. Really enjoy what you do.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  Рік тому

      Thanks very much! I agree. The next step is to pull the head. That will show exactly what the problem is. Do you think that is a 235 or a 216?

    • @dconoway9932
      @dconoway9932 Рік тому

      @@whattherust Looks bigger than a 216 which is what I have in my 46 unrestored original Chevy coupe but it could be the 216. Love to see what's under that head and maybe you can coax it back to life. Since you didn't turn it over you absolutely did no damage to any of the internals. Can't believe it was so cold for you down there. That's the kind of weather we get up here near the Canadian border this time of year.

    I remember Nehi and Upper 10. They were trying to compete with 7up and Sprite, but they didn't last long. Sometimes, bottles from small independent regional companies that are long gone will be valuable. Coca Cola used to stamp the name of the city where the bottles came from on the bottom. Some of them are very common and some are rare. If you wanted to find out if any of those bottles are worth anything, that would be the place to start. It's worth checking into.
    We used to play a little game. When we were all drinking cokes, we'd each look at the bottom of the bottle when we finished. Whoever has the city that was the furthest away was the winner. Of course, you had to know your geography to know where everything is.
