True story - I have a friend who back in the 90s worked in the movie business doing set work. He was a big muscular guy. One day during a break Segal comes up to him and punches him in the chest and asks him what are you going to do about it. The guy really needed the job so he did nothing - knowing that if he would have struck the delicate star he would be fired immediately. That is the kind of crap Segal use to pull on set and at location.

Reputable martial artists will do their best to remain fit and flexible. Seagal has allowed his (physical) appetites to take control so he is now not just overweight but literally obese. Even though he trained in and taught Aikido for years, he's now going to lack the stamina which is critical to keeping both healthy *and* being able to defend oneself and, if need be, others effectively. Theoretically, Aikido techniques could still be done by such a heavy person as Seagal, but he wouldn't last long against a fit individual, trained in martial arts.
Also, Seagal is an embarrassment to genuine martial artists, whatever their style(s), since he incessantly claims he's better than any other martial artists - which is highly unlikely compared to people like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Jason Stratham, Tony Jaa, Cynthia Rothrock, and many others; some would add Jackie Chan and, despite his battles with thyroid issues, Jet Li. He also claims he studied Aikido under its founder, O'Sensei, but he didn't arrive in Japan until at least 1971, O'Sensei had already passed on by 1968, and the few non-Japanese who did study under Aikido's founder have stated that Seagal was never there at the time to learn from Ueshiba himself as Seagal claims.
As well as arrogant boasting, Seagal claims he's taught critical kicks and other techniques to UFC fighters which enabled them to knock out and/or defeat opponents.
He is taking far too much credit for the accomplishments of UFC fighters, and his claims have been disputed by these men. Seagal himself either believes that he really is teaching these 'UFC whippersnappers something new, or he believes that we or the general public believes him. And both of these options are uncomfortably sad at this point.
He also denies that Judo Gene Lebell ever choked him out, despite all evidence to the contrary, and after donating a hefty sum of money to a Buddhist Temple and group was pronounced to be the reincarnation of a much revered Tibetan Buddhist, a 'fact' he has happily repeated in numerous on-camera interviews. However, such a reincarnation would be marked by piety and avoidance of any overindulging - such as indulging his appetites and becoming obese - as well as honesty and genuine humility. Instead, he continues to boast of his martial prowess and lies pathologically, making false claims such as that of having anything more than a ceremonial role (and certificate) relating to law enforcement. There are also numerous instances of sexual harrassment, abuse, and - horribly - direct involvement in the trafficking of women for the 'sex trade.'
These facts do *not* make for either an ethical man, a good example of a martial artist, and certainly not a reincarnation of an important Tibetan Buddhist priest; ideally, Seagal would shape up both physically and psychologically but it is highly unlikely. Perhaps, therefore, it is best that he remain in Russia and Siberia, swapping Putin's judoka and FSB tales with his own mendacious claims rather than remaining in the U.S. continually claiming credit for the skills and wins of UFC fighters whilst being arrogantly disdainful of all other martial artists.

I had to come back here because I see a lot of hate between 'MMA Enthusiasts' and 'Traditional Martial Artists'. Being a Martial Artist for over 35 years, I took offense to those that called 'Classic or
Traditional Martial Arts' to be 'mystical BS'. These people clearly do not understand the true purpose of the Arts. Here is a hint... it is NOT to HURT or BEAT PEOPLE UP. Society has become enamored by MMA...all of the fighting, but none of the discipline. As a practitioner, I quickly realized the inherent weakness of my style in terms of some application. I added Krav Maga to my studies to rectify that. My lifelong studies in the traditional arts gave me the focus and the discipline to properly incorporate additional techniques. "Take what is good and discard what is not". Tradition and mediation is not something to be discarded. BUT INEFFECTIVE forms should be. And that is not 'mystical BS'.

It still amazes me to see so much hate. Why would you bother go on UA-cam to talk trash. My son has had years of Martial Arts training and still works out in class. He has always been great full for getting thrown by Mr. Seagal. Said the artist is smooth and totally clean in his moves. That is good enough for me. The only thing akward is the fact that the man is 6’6” tall which would appear different than what the Art form was designed for so long ago. If you ever get the chance put your body/where your mouth is. Grow a pair and take a fall or two. If you can.

@TJ McGregor Why do people always make height an issue? All of the best fighters in world history are men of average or smaller size. Why? Because those men have to fight all of their life to get respect. That's why. They have to work that much harder to be taken seriously, and that results in a better fighter.
