  • Engines of Metro North EMD FL9
The fl9 is truly a legend when it comes to locomotives as it ran for over 50 years without fault and left it’s mark on several railroads. It ran on metro north, conrail, penn central and the new haven railroad. It was revolutionary and even though it is a bit old fashioned there are plans to put them back into service. There are also several preserved in museums all over the world.

Although I never saw one in person, the FL-9 is kind of special to me. I enjoy slightly unusual stock equipment, and the Fl-9 and some of Fairbanks-Morse's "C Liners" which also had a B-A1A wheel arrangement seemed so cool to me.

This is awesome. When I was a youngster, the FL9s used to blow their horns as they ran on the line extending from Grand Central Terminal and into the Bronx and beyond. It was (and remains) a magnificent sight. Thank you for the memories. :)

Enjoyable video! As a kid, I watched NHRR Shore Line trains with my dad at the Old Saybrook station. My earliest memories of NHRR varnish were Alco PAs, which were eventually replaced by the FL9s. They made an impressive sight pulling crack NH expresses like the Merchants Limited. As for McGinnis, he was a crook who sadly drove the New Haven into bankruptcy. About the only good thing that came out of his short, disastrous reign was the livery bearing his name.

Thank you for a well executed video presentation on EMD's FL9. To think that this remarkable locomotive came about due to the short-sided efforts by one Patrick McGinnis who wanted to cut costs by dieselizing an entire rail network. His tampering with a successful formula ( mainline electrification ) proved one thing . . . "if it ain't broke don't fix it." I can only imagine what might have happened if McGinnis and one other predecessor at the New Haven Railroad had focused on electrfying all the way to Boston and not go against the grain of logic.

When I was a teen in the 1960's I took the NYNHH to New Milford CT quite regularly. I recall the FL9's quite well. One trip on a Sunday evening back to NYC, I recall the conductor coming from the engine with a pair of work gloves on. Some trips the FL9's only went as far as Danbury and passengers had to transfer to a Budd RDC. The first time I was in an RDC I recall hearing the automatic transmission shift as we picked up speed.

These were my personal favorites because they just looked "right", didn't have a clue about the technology...but as a younger person would try and get pictures when ever I saw them from the boat...(fishing..nothing fancy) And the New Haven color scheme is also a favorite of mine. What an amazing video. Amazing that a dual mode locomotive replaced a large chunk of New Haven’s electric locomotive fleet. New Jersey Transit and AMT in Montreal did the same thing when they purchased the ALP45DP: by replacing a majority of their diesel-electric locomotives with them, although NJT still continues to run some of their HEP-equipped GP40’s today.

Great video! The FL9 has always been one of my favorite diesel locomotives honestly.
What's crazy too is that this past summer, Amtrak was considering buying the 6 FL9s you mentioned at the end of the video to convert into NPCUs (similarly to the F40PH "Cabbage" units) due to the rerouting of trains to Grand Central during Penn Station line repairs. Amtrak's P32AC-DMs lacked a nose door and so crews couldn't get out of the locomotives in the terminals in case of an emergency, something the FL9s did have.
Unfortunately, Amtrak decided, due to cost, to temporarily lease out cab cars from MARC while their Genesis fleet was fitted with nose doors. I was in the Hudson Bay area that summer too, so I was hoping to get a glimpse of some FL9s in action for the first time. What a shame.

Well done and in the 1990s these FL-9s in LIRR service used to be paired with LIRR C1s which were derived from Sydney New South Wales CityRail L,R,S & V sets. For Metro North they should have designed an Overhead Wires third rail locomotive for NY Grand Central to New Haven. Can you do engines of LIRR which would have shown the FL-9 replacement the DM30AC.

I do know that one currently has a K5LA, (The one I know for sure is in service.) and the other one has an RS2M. (Not sure if that one is being operated.)
