  • This is perhaps the most famous locomotive in North America and one with a very long and storied history. I cover the F40PH-3C from the metro north perspective and everything that lead up to its creation and eventual rebuilding from old Amtrak F40PH locomotives into and F40PH-2CAT. Then when metro north purchased F40PH-2 CAT locomotives from New Jersey Transat and rebuilt them along with the Metro-North F40PH-2CAT locomotives into F40PH-3C locomotives. The Metro north F40PH-3C locomotives still carry on in service to this day pulling trains on the railroads west of Hudson lines.

I recorded this video before NJT F40PH-2CAT locomotives 4119 and 4120 ran more revenue trains. I still do not know what the state of NJT’s remaining F40’s but it is more complex than I made it out to be.

These trains are so metallic and shiny I do not imagine they taste very good. I do not think I could consume these trains.

Of these units, 4910 catches my eye the most, due to it originally having been Amtrak 310. A former AMT Leaser being used on Trinity Railway Express right now is numbered 310 (alongside another numbered 330), but of course, here is where we find the real 310. That 310 down in Texas was actually 392, while the 330 was originally 365. Before becoming AMT Leasers, they spent time on Virginia Railway Express, who numbered them V31 and V33. After VRE tossed them, the Leasing Companies decided just to keep the numbers they then had, just stick a 3 back in front of them.

When those Siemens Chargers replace the current fleet of locomotives on the west of Hudson lines, I think the GP40s and F40s on Metro North will just be used on work trains, and in switching and rescue services as well. Will Metro North get their Siemens Chargers for the west of Hudson lines soon, nyrailfan 202?

Glad MTA retains their F40PH-3Cs, along with the GP40FH-2Ms. NJT 4119 and 4120 recently also came back; however it was very brief.

@@nyrailfan202 Rumor has it that when the Geeps get rebuilt, they will fill in. This is because the PL42ACs are getting retired instead after multiple issues and the inability to overhaul (pretty stupid). However not all PL42s are being retired.
