they do need stuff to grind their teeth on i suggest wood sticks, a wooden edible house (change every so often of course) and feeding them a pellet like food will also cut down their teeth as well :) Hope this helped!

One of the best advice videos. The only thing I would add is that even you have hours and hours to devote to your rat, rats should always have at least one cagemate. Rats are social animals and need the companionship of other rats.

3.) No pine or cedar, but aspen is OK for rats. But I would recommend carefresh or yesterdays news as they have more absorbency and are softer for the rats.
Also, make sure to keep the two rats in seperate cages otherwise you might end up with the average litter size of 12 kittens!

I agree, sounds like we use the same food. Besides, rats are omnivores, they need more than just pellets.

@ThaRatChick i had a wooden hut for my guinea pig and we changed the bedding every week but there where mushrooms that grew in there in olnly a day, so we got a plastic one
I have a critter nation for my two rats but the cage can fit 12 rats I love my rats so much and i got them from the snake food section of the pet store so they have a chance to live a happy life they were only 8 weeks old.
Thank you so much my friend said she got rats and she's gonna give me one of its baby's but I have to hide it from every one even my brother! So I need to spend a lot of time with it😆😄😏

At first I was hell bent against rats. I didn't like anything about them then my science teacher had a litter (18 of them!). She said if they didn't get adopted out she was going to give them to another student to feed to a snake so then I adopted Joey. He was still a baby and I just couldn't say no. I wish I would of gotten him a friend but my dad wouldn't budge. He was the best pet I have ever had and has recently passed. Don't knock something til you try it people.
And I've heard that the huts get moldy really quick.

Soooo what do you look for in rat pellets?
Mazuri, oxbow, and Harlan teklad are all good rat foods! You can find oxbow at most pet stores. You can also order Harlan teklad on eBay, or amazon. Some feed stores carry it as well.
My vet recommends oxbow for rats :) it's one of the best foods out there!
the grid platforms are not good for their feet!
@jadeslpsfamily Rat food IS good for them. It depends on the food. SEED MIXES are horrible for them, but a good lab block is great. Oxbow, Mazuri and Harlen are wonderful foods. Dog food isn't a good choice unless you are doing Suebee's mix. Dog food has too much protein in it for rats.
Vegetables and fruits are needed daily. Rats aren't slow eaters, mine eat up as much as they can as fast as they can. Veggies and fruits are an important part of their diet.

make sure you get two rats or more
They should have lab blocks 24/7, and if you feed them little meals like this woman, leave the food there for a couple hours then take out what they don't eat, mostly so it doen't stink up the cage.
You don't need to cut them because they grind them. The only time they would need to be cut would be if they were not aligned or the rat had very bad mouth pain.

i have 7 beautiful rats and they know their name and only 2 of them do tricks

No they do not, they use their own teeth to grind against. Those edible huts have ingredients that are unsafe (the first ingrdient is pine).

@samalama1998 you could check ebay, or just online websites that sell cages for rodents, my cage is one for ferrets and it's perfect :)

@GayGamerAU Actually you must potty train and tame young even old rat just don't let them out until they are potting in one area either a litter box or whatever works but female rats can't hold pee very well for long times so don't put rats on your shoulder until a few months

Kid, these rats are not normal rats like "Rattus Rattus" this kind of rat is a "Rattus Norvegicus Forma Domestica", and its not good for them to be outside, cuz thier air passages are realy sensitive.
