Thank you for covering this story. Please foster, adopt, volunteer. So many things people can do to help - many of which don't cost anything for you but make a world of difference for the dogs.

The housing crisis and the huge rise in veterinary costs are enough to make it impossible to have a dog now!

What a great lady! Love this story! Hope they all find good homes! I've been feeding wild cats on the trail I ride on my bicycle everyday! Rain or shine they get fed everyday! And recently I've found a home for one of them! This lady is GREAT!

Hey. You could try reaching out to some cat TNR projects locally. As as much as it's lovely to feed them, if they keep breeding... Stray cats (I assume you mean stray vs wild but maybe not) have a terrible life outside & it usually ends in a slow painful death and there's just too many cats for homes/to get looked after. Good luck and thank you for caring.

This makes me so sad. I hate people sometimes. These dogs are alive and well and we will kill them? I imagine if that weee my dog…it makes me sad. I hope all these dogs have a safe and loving place to live for the rest of their precious lives.

When I adopt a pet from animal shelters they have a home for their life. I don’t get rid of family dogs. I’ll have a lot of horses and dogs waiting for me in heaven.

Muttville sounds great! Shelters and rescues are amazing, but there's also areas that likely could be improved that may increase adoption that I'm going to leave here to encourage people thinking of this.
I been looking into adopting, but I'm concerned about the current practice of hormone-changing sterilization for all adoptions. There been a few studies over past few yeare indicating it has negative physical and behavioral issues -- including increased aggression despite the common belief it does the opposite (which may contribute to dogs ending up back in the shelter/rescue). Parsemus has a good summary of this on the page about a good alternate -- hormone-saving sterilization (that are less invasive and would be less expansive likely if were used more). Knowing this, it's hard to consider adopting from a rescues and shelters as in some respect, hormones saved my life, so realizing that our pets are denied that, and research on this is just being ignored, is really bothering me. Not really a Muttville issue since it's senior focused, which are usually already sterilized years ago, and majority of effects of sterilization are for dogs younger then they're focused on to my understanding. (Please see the source I mentioned that explains this much better then I can).
I've also been doing research in classism and gatekeeping around dog adoption -- if Google it, there's a lot of stories around people trying for months to adopt and being denied for reasons like lack of a good fence, living in apartments, having kids, being low income, etc -- rescues particularly can have a lot of rules and perhaps are weeding out people that are good parents (though also weeding out people that are bad parents maybe.)-- many, according to the stories I read, which then go to breeders instead 😳 (not necessarily Muttville, it doesn't have that many rules iirc thou it's questionary is fairly long. Thou they do things like home inspections, which definitely scares people away -- like myself, I started filling out the questionary and stopped at that question, it's not required but I felt like I'd be denied anyway if I said no. I don't want people coming into my home and judging me 😳).

Our main goal is to make a good
Match, we offer senior for senior adoptions and it’s not about income or judgement it’s about love.

Most of the dogs we save are actually from the Central Valley not SF. We help where we can. This is happening everywhere.

At Muttville, we spend an average of $1600 on each dog that we say yes to, our adoption fee is $250 and it's free to adopt to seniors over 62. The alternative to many of these seniors is being killed.
