Cats show us a ton of respect: they don't kill us while we sleep. And they even wake us up several times per night to demonstrate how they aren't killing us.
That’s because if they tried to kill us they would just get bodied. Not really a sign of respect but a sign that they understand we are above them in the food chain
Cats were considered part of the family in ancient Egypt. When the family cat died, the family went into mourning just as if a human member had died. Wealthy families even mummified their cats. Several sizable cat cemetaries even existed. Killing a cat was a capital offense.
This is not the full truth, tho. Most animals were worshiped in Egypt, but being worshiped ment that they were being given as offerings to the gods. Selling offerings (mummified corpses) was a huge business and they were basically breeding cats and killing them at very young age just to bury them. This is why those "cemeteries" exists. Ancient Egypt was not a great place to be if you were a cat... or an ibis, crocodile, lion, ect.
I have always considered that millenia ago, in some village somewhere, some lost kitten was crying mournfully, a toddler girl picked it up, it purred, and that was it, we were lost.
You're probably correct. It's just that simple. Mother cats often abandon a kitten here or there if they deem them unviable. The kitten will cry out to it's mother for days with no response until eventually it dies. Some ancient child probably adopted one of those kittens and thus domestication began.
On the beginning of pandemic me and my partner moved out to countryside. And there was a feral cat, hunting rats, mouses etc. We started to feed him and slowly build trust. I took him over a year to allow us to stroke him. 3 years later he will still go to hunt, but. He wants to be cuddle so much by us. He feels 100% safe with us. His first humans :)
Our two newest kittens, as soon as my wife opened the carrier to let them out in the kitchen, immediately found me in my room and climbed onto my shoulder. Every other cat we've ever had wanted to explore first. The one who found me first spends hours curled up on my left arm, so I'm getting exercise without trying. I'll be watching YT, and out of nowhere, I find a kitten has leaped onto my chest, and is sitting there staring me in the face. He so clearly decided I belong to him it sometimes makes me feel like crying...and before we brought them home, he ran away from me when I tried to hold him. He was the runt of the litter, and more than ten months old, his tail is still short and stiff, unlike his brother...but both have virtually no hair on their ears.
Yeah cats havent really been domesticated when you think of it, any cat could be thrown outside and never let in its house again and it would survive easily. Compared to a dog which would be confused and sad and probably not really know how to catch food as dogs only seem to play for fun when they chase birds or squirrels very few dogs can actually catch food. Cats live alone also where as dogs are supposed to be in big groups so they can hunt down animals to eat so a lone dog wouldn't really catch food.
every time i look at my tiny sweet friend, it is so incredible realizing that i am living with a miniature lion with so many habbits, insticts and behaviours still in common.
Yeesh. No and no. There are two branches of cats surviving (third was Smilodon). The first has the lions, tigers, leopards. The second has the wild cats, puma, serval. Domesticated cats are from the second branch. So your pet may be like a puma, but never like a lion or tiger. Lions don't even purr.
@@KorithStoneheart both can be badder, lion and tigers have their own behaviour but since lions are smart enough to form a group they dont need to be aggressive all the time. BESIDES yes cats are somehow 40% tiger
my 2 cats were strays from the same litter, 15 happy years with them, i lost one of them a few days ago but i’m grateful for 10,000 years of domestication to have had the ability to meet her
Cats were domesticated by showing up. Happens to this day. Strangely enough, I met people who are even in denial about this. "It's not my cat. It's a feral cat that shows up for food and snuggles almost every day. Last winter I sheltered the cat. There is enough room in my bed so why not?" Or "I temporarily adopted the cat five years ago when the owner died. I don't even know the name. The other cats in my apartment are offspring. The babies got temporary names because I don't want a cat. Temporary is important word here. May I borrow your cat treadmill? I'm just curious if those cats like it." Or "I'm not a cat person. Mittens is not really a pet. I keep Mittens around because taking care for him is a remedy to my depression. It's very heart-warming how much Mittens loves snuggles, especially at night. It's well worth the food and vet expenses." I'm not making this up.
TIL that I have severels cats as pets lmao. I am living in a village and when the covid started I saw an adult female cat one day on the street that liked snuggling and hella fluffy. I was like "ok i like you i guess" then everyday I gave him leftovers. After a while I bought more food than needed just to give her more food. 2 and a half years passed and now I feed Flufie's grandchildren everyday. I LOVE FLUFIE and her kids and her kids kids. So yeah I DO have several cats a pets but I just found out today.
Me, feeding 5 feral cats everyday and building them a winter shelter and occasionally letting them nap in my bedroom but still trying not to get too attached: 👁👄👁
i can attest that this is 100% how i became a cat lady😂 i saw my sweet salt and pepper baby and that was all it took, “she’s not my cat i just don’t want her to be hungry or cold so i let her chill in my house when she comes” she’s been here for almost 6 years now😂😂 her names gordita now “little fatty” lol
@@eneskaraytug514 You should consider having all of your pets spayed/neutered. The cost to care them will eventually rise to unsustainable levels if they keep reproducing. No ill intent meant as I love cats and just don't want to see abandoned ones any more.
When talking about domestication of cats (or dogs), people always forget the companionship/affection factor. Most people know what its like to feel hungry. They see a skinny stray one day and their empathy kicks in, they throw it some scraps. Cat learns to come around for food, familiarity breeds some mild affection... then one day mr ancient man is having a bad day sitting there feeling down, maybe got in a fight with the cavewoman bc he didnt throw the elk carcass away after dinner which turned into an argument about how he never takes out the carcasses AND leaves his bloody spears everywhere, doesnt even wipe them down... So hes sitting there feeling down, and this cute fluffy thing rubs against his legs and meows, and for the first time, instead of just throwing it food, he reaches down and touches it... it likes being pet, he feels his mood lift a little, and a friendship is born :)
@@Ulexcool Dude, it relates to cats' personality and behaviour. It's a humorous quote by one of the most intelligent British authors. In our folktales, cats are believed to be the tiger's aunt (father's sister), she was asked to fetch fire from the humans. But when she reaches the human house, she tasted burnt rice (that sticks to the bottom of a pan) and sweet potato baked in ash ( under the fire). She wanted more and more of it and never went back to the forest. And hence settled with humans.
As someone who’s seen the cat distribution system in action, this story tracks 😭. Cats love human food, just because it’s ours! My cat will even eat sweet stuff if she can, and cats can’t even taste sugar. She just wants it cause it’s human food.
@@KanadianKaiser well we are social creatures! so yeah we will pretty much try to pack bond with anything. it's one thing that's just so pure about humanity
Cats let themselves be domesticated, they are different from dogs. the reason why a lot of people think cats are "mean" is bc cats, unlike dogs, have boundries and will only open up to you if they like you even if you take care of them really well, while dogs are friendly in general.
Cats didn’t need to be socialized, they were there for pest control for when people weren’t around, dogs were used to guard and protect humans and property. Cats don’t have the social hierarchies that dogs have and cats are mostly solitary with small or short-lived social encounters. Likewise, a cat isn’t very dangerous: hissing, clawing, biting, knocking things over, giving the death stare when you touch the tummy, etc. it’s funny or adorable for a cat but not it would not be so cute if said cat was the size of a wolf. Cats weren’t fully socialized or domesticated because they didn’t need to be to do their job, dogs had to be both for safety and because they were around people so long (and with humans coopting their pack tendencies). If cats needed to be around humans more or for a separate job, they would have been selectively bred to do so (in just 10 generations a team of Russian scientists were able to fully domesticate and socialize a species of fox just by selective breeding. Cats would have been little different).
@@gideonmele1556 modern cats actually form large colonies when their populations aren't controlled by humans, the social hierarchy is definitely different from dogs and humans but it's not inherently lesser. they are very social creatures but they depend on it less.
@@elliotmydude well, my personal theory is that cats operate a lot more like early humans than dogs, forming very light hierarchies based on profesionalism rather than more rigid hierarchies. Like an "anarchist" assocation of individuals that freely associate together for mutual benefit, instead of the tight nitted heirarchy of a wolf pack.
Wellllll somehow bringing racist ideologies into a conversation about love for cats. And cats can't really be domesticated, they just coexist with people. You can't really make cats do sht 😂😂😂😂
Love the discrepancy between how cats and dogs came to be. Humans saw wolves and meticulously sculpted them in hundreds of ways to fit dozens of niches for all the different jobs they wanted them to do. But humans saw cats and were like "you're absolutely perfect as is, keep it up and hang around" and they only really got smaller as their prey was in cramped barns corners and storehouses more and open fields less.
I think it's more like, Wolves raised by humans were chill with being bred for different jobs. And cats refused. Edit the First: Turns out, that's wrong. Humans bred caution out of cats. That's why you can't let your pet cat wander outside, because they're too dumb to know when to run away. Unless you _want_ them to die, of course. Edit the Second: but I didn't do research, so take that with a grain of salt, maybe.
Umm . . . My cats domesticated me. I no longer run wild, sleeping and eating wherever. It seems the same time I got my first cat I began cooking my own meals and sleeping in my own bed more often. What was once a cute animal to watch became a companion. I even started talking to an animal, looking for answers in a cat's eyes. Somehow I decided to bring more cats in, even though it seemed illogical to have more litter boxes that I had to clean more often, along with buying more cat food. Now if I have to sleep away from home my first order of business is "find someone to care for my cats".
Oh god, tell me about it. there's this stray calico cat that stays outside my house all the time, we first started to feed her scraps, she was nice and very friendly, she's been fed by other residents but mostly stays in outside our home since almost all of our neighbors have dogs, except for us and there was just something about her that i was like, give me cat food, and so I did. Now I have a strict feeding schedule, and she'll meow until she has her food, and she isn't even my cat.
Yeah... I adopted a blind kitten years ago to keep company to my dog while I was at work. Now I'm owned by 5 cats and 3 dogs, and I couldn't wish for a better family
synchromorph hmhmhm. Your cat uses you as a pillow when it wants to sleep, siphons your body heat and practices it’s moves on you before hitting up the lady cats
My kitty, Little Princess, allows me to scratch her and blesses me with purs in return. (seriously, tho one time she stood between me and a random dog that appeared and hissed at him in what looked like an attempt to protect me. The doggo was shy and actually got scared by her, poor thing. But whenever anyone says cats don't love their humans I remember her trying to protect me from a big scary dog! lol)
I love that house cats are great companions who still maintain some of their wild ancestry. There are times when my cat shows his wild side, especially at dawn and dusk, and it's always so fascinating to watch.
Kitties domesticated themselves. They saw a large warm cave with lots of food and a creature that would help it take care of it's babies, and was like "I'm moving in, and I'll tolerate you, I guess" and humans were like "you're fluffy and cute, okay!"
Nope, that's not the way feline domestication went down. Agricultural production of grain attracts rodents which in turn attract cats. The predatory instincts of cats proved useful to humans in controlling rodent populations, and humans engaged in activities that lured in easy prey for the cats, so humans and cats developed a symbiotic relationship through a chain reaction that started with the agricultural revolution.
i just adopted two amazing kittens, i have a boy and a girl, and they’re siblings. they’re the most entertaining, obnoxious, fearless, and loving creatures alive. i cannot help but be fascinated by them, they’re truly individuals.
I always cry about cats and dogs found buried with their people because archeologically, it tells us how loved and valued they were, but it makes me sad to think about the animal being killed just because its owner died.
I think the same thing too, but I imagine they thought they'd both be happier together in the afterlife.... Or maybe they didn't care about the cat at all, and I'm just making excuses for them.
@@Luthiart they did care about the cat, you just gotta realize the difference in culture. to them the idea wasnt "we all meet up happily in heaven eventually :)" because those religions hadnt even been conceived of yet, if you wanted to live forever after with little mittens then mittens had to be buried in the same hole as you. That was just how they thought it worked, and honestly we'll never know who is truly right.
You know I don't think the cats would consider us domesticated to them I think they would consider us enslaved. So it cat folklore probably tell stories about how they Enslaved the human species and conquered the Earth😂 because you know that your cat thanks your bed is there bed and your house is their house right? Honestly, having lived with cats all my life, I don't believe they were ever domesticated, rather, we just locked them inside and gave them food so they figured "Sure, this is acceptable" 😆
Tell that to my cat. That dude hates the outside with a passion. He throw a fit every time we try to bring him outside, and would zoom into the house the moment I put him on the grass.
Very True. I grew up with cats everywhere also, and our cats where badasses and extremely independent, They lived inside and outside the house and usually brought us some small animals mice or little birds and made them watch as they tortured them...
@@OudPlayerHBY So they did the job they were hired for? Cats were kept around to keep the vermin down and on farms in my area they are still kept in large populations to do exactly that. This is why I’ve always loved cats. They’re still always semi-wild. You have to earn their affection and loyalty over time. I love dogs too, but it’s in their genetic programming to automatically follow and obey their perceived alpha due to being pack animals. As long as you show authority, a dog will usually automatically love and respect you. I love how independent cats are, yet they can be so loyal and loving if you gain their trust.
No, completely wrong. Dogs form familiar bonds, just like humans. They are not pack animals, not even wolves. The alpha crap was debunked by the same person that started it, since further data proved the contrary.
Just an FYI, when a cat starts to urinate in unusual places, the first thing that has to be done is a trip to the vet. This is frequently a warning sign of a UTI, bladder crystals, or another medical problem. If the vet finds nothing wrong, then it's time to see if there's something new in the environment that's upsetting the cat or triggering 'marking' instinct. Only after these things have been cleared should behavior be addressed.
With “behavior problems”, the first step should always be the vet. I’ve never had a cat with real behavior problems, it always turned out to be a medical problem.
Our first cat was rescued from an animal hoarder. She kept urinating on towels because that's all she had there. She was already very old and the behavior issue was nearly impossible to get rid off at that point.😔 Other than that she was the sweetest lady. As a kid it was extremely hard for me to fall asleep until we got her. She would always curl up around the top of my head and purr really loudly which worked like a charm in making me calm enough to sleep.
Appreciating and collectively looking after stray cats is an amazing part of Turkish and Cypriot culture imo. I'm glad this whole thing is becoming more widely known and I hope the rest of the world can learn a thing or two from it.
“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods.” - Hitchens
I had a cat who was totally devoted to me and protective. I had her since a kitten. We loved each other. The thing I don't understand is that she didn't have the traits I hear so often spoken of about cats, like ignoring and not listening, being hyper-independent. Can't figure it out.
It depends on the way people raise them. If they’re raised to be independent, they will be, however, if you raise them with tons of affection and love, they’re as loyal (or even more loyal) as dogs
All cats are different. One of my cats is pretty independent and just sleeps the whole day, but the other is very needy and sits in my lap all the time.
Cats have varying personalities like people. My one cat is very shy and likes to sit on my lab and hang out with me, while my other cat is more independent and pretends that her sitting between me and my laptop is a coincidence
I once had the amazing opportunity to tour parts of Italy, Greece, and Turkey. The part I loved the most was all the cats there were, some of them were very friendly.
it's probably the closest you can get to ethical domesticating of animals, they aren't in a cage or locked indoors, they can leave if they want, however they just happen to love to keep coming back

Yes. It was Saint Helena that brought the cats to Cyprus. So, Saint Helena set sail to the holy places to find the holy cross. She did, however upon returning back to Constantinople, she shipwrecked in another region of the empire, Cyprus. She slept there and the next day she couldn’t find the two pieces of cross that she had brought with her. However, there was a bright light upon a mountain top, where the pieces were found. There, she founded two monasteries (which still exist today). The island was however plagued by terrible drought, overrun by snakes and rats. It still should be a capital offense for ending the life of a cat 🐈!
As it should've been.
I have always considered that millenia ago, in some village somewhere, some lost kitten was crying mournfully, a toddler girl picked it up, it purred, and that was it, we were lost.
that's actually was very heartwarming
Should be in a movie
@Pixel the Ragdoll same …I just got a ragdoll kitten he’s the best

Stroke?? Pause bro

@@gideonmele1556 You definitely need to socialise a cat and they tend to form groups. Cats are more social than people thinks.

@@isitoveryet9525 You don't have the parasite it seems
I think it's more like,
Wolves raised by humans were chill with being bred for different jobs.
Ya no, people definitely didn’t say “cats are perfect”
this comment is so underrated!! it surprises me when i think dogs were actually wolves, actual wild animals.
Umm . .

Nope, that's not the way feline domestication went down. Agricultural production of grain attracts rodents which in turn attract cats. NHMO OYTIS bold of you to assume I’m a cat person
I am part Cypriot and a cat lover
This is why I’ve always loved cats. They’re still always semi-wild. You have to earn their affection and loyalty over time. I love dogs too, but it’s in their genetic programming to automatically follow and obey their perceived alpha due to being pack animals. As long as you show authority, a dog will usually automatically love and respect you. I love how independent cats are, yet they can be so loyal and loving if you gain their trust.
Exactly!!
No, completely wrong. Dogs form familiar bonds, just like humans. They are not pack animals, not even wolves. The alpha crap was debunked by the same person that started it, since further data proved the contrary.
@@biohita dogs and wolves are pack animals go look it up wtf
@Ami Oropeza being social animals doesn't make you pack animals. You people are really confused.
@@richardknight4615 they are not, there is no study that points to it.
She was already very old and the behavior issue was nearly impossible to get rid off at that point.😔
Other than that she was the sweetest lady. As a kid it was extremely hard for me to fall asleep until we got her. She would always curl up around the top of my head and purr really loudly which worked like a charm in making me calm enough to sleep.
From my experience that's just how they initiate the breeding process, they mark the territory to atract females

Appreciating and collectively looking after stray cats is an amazing part of Turkish and Cypriot culture imo. I'm glad this whole thing is becoming more widely known and I hope the rest of the world can learn a thing or two from it.
... Cats are an invasive species. The stray ones should not be looked after, they should either be found actual homes or culled.
“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god.
@@Megsterkitty To a point. They have their own personalities as well.
All cats are different. One of my cats is pretty independent and just sleeps the whole day, but the other is very needy and sits in my lap all the time.

it's probably the closest you can get to ethical domesticating of animals, they aren't in a cage or locked indoors, they can leave if they want, however they just happen to love to keep coming back
Most animal loves freedom to explore and be free, what makes them keep returning to human because they need foods when they cant find in the wilds.

Our cats have always preferred catching, and eating rodents outside. The ones they bring into the house they consider toys rather than food. We had a cat that carried a large (bigger than the cat) very much alive jackrabbit into our second floor bedroom in the middle of the night . The cat let it go, and the cat and jackrabbit went running all around the bedroom. The sliding door to a second story balcony right outside the bedroom was open. The jackrabbit ran out and jumped off the balcony to the ground below. The cat followed and did the same.

To early cats it probably felt like an absolute win, they get a hunting ground, a steady supply of food when needed and a safe place to sleep.

Then later I go in to sleep and he lays next to me until morning. We have a wonderful relationship.

There was a monastery in Cyprus famous for caring for many cats! They had a legend about a saint bringing kittens to help protect them from snakes
So, she came back to Cyprus and brought with her many many cats, to get rid of the snakes and rats. And this is how cats saved Cyprus.

Those cats arrived to stop the snake infestation that the hundreds of thousands local cats couldn't so she brought another 30000 cats. Today those cats made the race of Saint Helena Cat and the Saint Nicholas Cat, while the initial Cypriot cats make the Cypriot Giant Aphrodite Cat. A fourth race showed up from the intermixing in the 20th century AD. Those cats are called the Local Cypriot Cats.
So Cyprus has 4 Cypriot cat Races:
1) Local Cypriot Cats
2) Aphrodite's Giant Cat
3) Saint Helena Cat
4) Saint Nicholas Cat
The 4 races of cat Races in Cyprus are big in size and with short hair. Geneticists, Breeders and Veterinarians want to create a 5th race with high standards until 2050. They will take selective ancestors from the 4 Cypriot races and possibly other non Cypriot cats to make it. The idea is to make a breed of cats that will have minimum health problems, being large, short haired, with great variety of colors and friendly. Cypriot cats are ideal as they have been through natural selection for 12000 years now even before they arrived to Cyprus.
