Everybody thought since I'm trapped at home I might as well get a pet then they realized why they never got a pet in the first place or why mom and dad always said no it's a lot of work it cost money it's years of dedication 90% of people won't even do that for a relationship or a family member let alone an animal
Talking to our vet when we had to put my adopted stray down after 12 yrs, there is now a shortage of vets in my area because so many people adopted during lockdown.

Some would require a 30- to 90-day unit inspection; 24 hour notice, usually a one time deal; to see if the pet was wreaking havoc. I became friends with the property managers at the first complex we rented at. That site required a half-month deposit and the inspection. They liked the system. It encouraged people to cooperate and not try to sneak pets in, plus it rewarded responsible pet owners. In addition, it made for happier tenants. Neighbor complaints were handled reasonably, always arbitrated by the property managers. (Some people just don't like animals anywhere near them and will complain about the smallest things.) It was a good and workable compromise. We had an indoor cat, she passed the inspection, and when we finally moved out we got our pet deposit back. Things got crazily restrictive when the "pit bull menace" crap was being pumped by the media. Lots of non-dog people were suddenly experts on breeds and temperament. My household has only had cats; never dogs because of our irregular schedules and absences. We have had canine guests, though, everything from a runt teacup Yorkie to a half-blind Akita and every size in between. Dogs in particular are a reflection of their owners, we've never had trouble. Our cats have never minded, even with the bigger ones. Personally I think it's just another manifestation of exercising power over others which seems to be becoming more and more prevalent these days and has been happily embraced by property owners. Don't get me started about parking disputes!

This breaks my heart, it is so hard to watch... all they want is a loving home and someone to care for them. Do not abandon dogs, take them to a no kill shelter and please if we can make more donations to pounds such as dog food and treats, toys, blankets etc. so that we can have more no kill shelters... if the prices get too high to have animals, we should make it so that the no kill shelters can house them and donate to make it affordable so that everyone can afford the pets. Having a lot of fostering of animals is another way to help with this solution. I hate how the animals are locked up in cages, that is no kind of life for an animal... but it is a reality that many sadly have to face. I wish this world would change and people would have more respect and love for these precious living beings that reside with us. Do you not look into a dog's eyes and see that they have a soul?
People got pets during the "lockdown" and when there was an eviction moratorium. Now they are relinquishing them because it's "back to work" and "pay your rent."

This was a few years ago when the highest price ever for a dog was, as I recall, $750,000 USD. There have always been breed-specific shelters. Doesn't negate the fact that we still euthanize a million cats and dogs in this country every year.
It should be illegal to charge both a pet deposit as well as pet rent. A deposit should be able to cover any expected damages from owning a pet. There is no logical reason for the monthly rent as well besides greed and the ability to just do so. In Sacramento the average pet rent is $50 making it $600 a year just to house a pet. This is a new phenomenon within this decade that is uncalled for.

It's not just San Francisco, Nationwide we euthanize over a million dogs and cats every year. The numbers were going down in the last decade but started to go up again with the abandonment of animals during covid.

A few years ago I was watching the desk of the shelter I volunteer act when a family came in to drop off a dog. The dog looks so confused, he had no idea what was happening. I tried to be polite they took the history and information because at least he hadn't been thrown on the side of a highway but what absolutely pushed my feigned compassion to the side was noticing that all of them were standing there playing with their phones... Ignoring this poor dog who knew something was happening. They all had the latest phone model. In this disposable society people dispose of the things we should care for the most.
Pet smart has special adoption days here they bring them all in the parking lot ... and people chose a pet...pet smart gets a customer for life so its all pluses for them. ...Get your spca together with them and have an adoption carnival.... remember to have water for everyone in the heat. And snakes for the dogs.or make it a picnic and throw on some chicken hogs....
I wonder if they are willing to waive any adoption fee(s), I believe initial fees are harmful for people working paycheck to paycheck and it would be a huge incentive to advertise a waiver of adoption fees and lets say, a bag of dog food or a basic collar; ADVERTISE IT.
