Very nice restoration. Thor hasn't been around for some time, but back in the day they were good quality tools. Your fabrication skills kept this nice old sturdy grinder in business and not relegated to the spare parts or scrap bin.
Found this bench grinder with the og wheel guards and everything sitting in a shed of the farm I bought. Just lugged it out and found that it still works like a champ. Needs a new cord for sure and cleaned up and maybe new brushed in the motor but I can't wait!! I got tired of sharpening my lawnmower blades with an angle grinder so I just gave it a try to much excitement and admiration for anything made from this era
I know this is an older video... but you would be hard pressed to find better bearings that came with it in the 1st place. Maybe need a cleaning and repacked, but that's about it. Even the new Timken bearings aren't what they used to be.... sadly.
That IS how to refurbish things. Bravo sir, Bravo! I liked how you made that bump out section in the side cover. Pretty nice idea. Thanks for sharing it.
Fecliciades
The list of repairs is impressive, as is the job done on this grinder, but how about the brushes and bearings in the motor? We saw that power cord at the start, could the brushes be as badly worn or cooked?
I tested the motor off camera and it ran great. To be honest I really needed a grinder quick so I decided to go with it as it is. Since then I've used it a lot. It's a good grinder.
Well, I was impatient. To be honest, the old bearings were very smooth and I needed the grinder quick and didn't want to wait on new ones. I've used the grinder a lot since the and it's fine.
I'm slightly concerned that the only work you did on the internals was to replace the power cord, but everything else looks fantastic! I'm just betting that the first thing to go out on that will be something in the motor. EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I still subscribed, I'm just pointing out things I noticed. I also noticed how practiced you were at dishing that left guard out.
I am restoring a grinder. It does not start but runs fine when I hand spin it. It has no Capacitor in the base. (like yours) What do you think is the problem? Thanks
Thanks! I was wondering when someone would say something. I actually only did that to test the motor, then I put a wire nut on it. I forgot to put that clip in the video.
I tested it off camera once I had rewired it and it ran great and the bearings were very smooth. I'm sure someday I'll have to rebuild the motor, for now its good.
It's a shame, after all that work, that the motor didn't get the love..... New bearing, or at least a clean and check of the old ones. The cosmetics get a 10 though.
Well, that's all it needed. The bearings were as smooth a silk and I really needed a grinder quick. I've used a heck out of that grinder since. Thanks for watching!
No, the flaps have to curve upwards or they would catch and fold. I love these mounted on bench grinders, they are perfect for blending and finish work. I use this flap wheel in the bolt cutter video and in the pipe vise video.
Great video - subscribed and looking forward to this channel. The light on the stand - did you refinish that or buy it? If you purchased it, where did you get it? Thanks!
Thanks a lot! The light came with the stand. It was very rusty and the cord was bad also. We just wired wheeled and repainted it and replaced the cord.
Cosmetics like cords, paint, and metalwork is NOT “restoring”. That is called beautification. Restoring would entail getting into that motor and making sure you aren’t just putting lipstick on a pig.
I think you've mastered the English language. Perhaps you'd be interested in being my consultant? To tell the truth, I don't think many people would search "beautification".
Greenridge Metal Works actually I found your video by typing in “bench grinder beautification”. So ya, not sure what captain corn meal back there is complaining about. Chances are that machine was built before standard built in obsolescence and is a solid unit. So the work you did was all the RESTORATION it needed! Well diddly done sir. Well diggidy darn diddly done did!😉👍🏽

Beautiful restoration of the bench grinder 🎉🎉

I was going to rework the internals on this one but it ran perfectly as it was. These are good grinders. Thanks for watching!
Excellent work, especially the fabrication of the guard.
That was my favorite part of the project. Thanks for watching!
You dialed out almost all the screaming grinder sounds! I love you man! The project was cool too! Thanks!
I try...
Made it look real nice and completely functional
This and tysy tube is the only good restoration channels around .... good job!
Can’t beat a hammered finish, nice.
Yeah, I've used hammered paint on several projects recently. I'm hooked.
I believe my Thor grinder is the same model. I'll be doing my restoration this summer. Thanks for sharing!
Nice job
Your free hand work with the grinder is very impressive and a bit scary to watch.
Well done my friend and really good video. Should last for many more years. Thank you
Thanks, I've already gotten a lot of use out of it.
@@GreenridgeMetalWorks I am a retired police officer and wore leather everything for years. I love the way it feels, ages and squeaks when it new.
Great Restoration, making that left guard was amazing!
Thanks a lot. That was the first time I tried that, surprised it worked so well.
Dude, you are such a badass! Well done. Very informative video... Do more tool restorations if ya ever have the time. You do em well.
Thanks!
@@GreenridgeMetalWorks, no problem, thank you. You should definitely do a bench vise or drill press next if ya ever have the opportunity.
Excellent....thank you for showing all the labels!!
Thanks for watching!
That's real neat job,excellent.
the bearings were not replaced, i'm going to cry!
Yeah I know, it's not a complete restoration without new bearings, but the existing ones were super smooth and I needed the grinder running quick.
I know this is an older video... but you would be hard pressed to find better bearings that came with it in the 1st place. Maybe need a cleaning and repacked, but that's about it. Even the new Timken bearings aren't what they used to be.... sadly.

Thanks, I like projects that require some fabrication.
Great fabrication of that missing guard! I was hooked when you immediately snipped the power cord. Subbed!
Yeah that was a short waiting to happen.
Video very good
Thanks!

Thanks, its hard to beat a wire wheel.
This is NOT what restoration is all about-
Badass!

Tal vez en 50 años más en la próxima restauración ...

My bench grinder it's low power what can I do to ripear
just thinking, how about at set of new bearings - now you're at it? Fine restoration btw.

Muito bom seu trabalho!
Ficou ótimo,Parabéns!
Muito obrigado
What kind of wheel is that on the right hand side? Interesting...
It's a 320 grit flap wheel. I use it a lot. Great for polishing and blending.
رائع ..عمل متقن ..

Wow, they haven't made motor housings that shape for a very long time! 7:40 I've been using that machine wrong all these years!

Originally the plan was a complete rebuild, but when I tested it off camera it ran fantastic. Also I needed a grinder quick.
Thanks!

Great build / restoration. Was this to replace the Black & Decker?
I already had a plan to fix it up but yes that's why I chose it as my next project.
Dude you got mad skills!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice, especially the new guard. But insulating tape on the live wire ?
Thanks! I was wondering when someone would say something. I actually only did that to test the motor, then I put a wire nut on it. I forgot to put that clip in the video.
Alright then, you're forgiven. THIS time :o)
MUITO BOM, PRECISO APRENDER...

Where can I get a grinder stand with a beer holder like yours?
A very good refurbishment of a very useful bench grinder,it will give many years of use,it was a good vidio to watch, well worth my 5 ☆ rating
Thank you very much!
Awesome!!
Хорошее точило. Оно думало, что ему место на свалке, а оно нет!
The motor didn’t need servicing?

Very nice, but is the flap wheel on backwards?
No, the flaps have to curve upwards or they would catch and fold. I love these mounted on bench grinders, they are perfect for blending and finish work. I use this flap wheel in the bolt cutter video and in the pipe vise video.
...and the abrasive is on the underside as mounted.
Is this the one from the pipe clamp video smoking ;o
No, but that's why I chose this job next. I needed a replacement grinder!
@@GreenridgeMetalWorks Very cool I'm a new sub and was wondering thanks for replying back :3
