I really appreciate your right-to-repair advocacy. As a high-schooler who started a business selling speakers, I strive to make my products as repairable as possible. I will never understand screwing over the very people who support you even if it means more profit in the short term. Thank you for bringing this huge problem in the industry to light. Even if it means less business for you as unrepairable products will lead more customers to your shop (instead of repairing the products themselves). Respect.

An article about Apple shredding hundreds of thousands of working Apple devices was recently published it's infuriating. Instead of reselling the working devices for refurbishment, they destroy them.

I can't take most tech outlets seriously anymore. The Verge contacted me a while ago to talk about some of this stuff and wasted an hour of my fucking time, then included zero of what we recorded in their show.
I mean zero. Actually included more from the manufacturer's side.
Regardless of whether other people in my industry agree or disagree with me, I would still suggest that you get information on this from people who are actually fixing things rather than from random stupid news outlets that copy and paste from press releases.
The lesson I learned from that is not waste my time talking to Bloggers, when I have a UA-cam channel.

Now, I may nor have necessarily had the skills myself at the time to do it myself but the fact is I had the ability to TRY. I just got an ipod classic and I'm impressed on how absolutely every single part is available, you can make one yourself with the parts if you want. And here I am, about to buy a new mouse because the rubber pads in the enclosure of my $130 one wore out over time, making it unconfortable and there are no replacement parts for it.

Soo many people have no clue how much parts cost, I work at a gas station, and occasionally i make jokes about the cost of the ram on phones, (phones in general, its a fookin shock to me that anything comes with less than 6gb in 2024) some people are actually seriously curious, and most ask, "whats ram?" SMH. If people were better informed about the devices they use every day, I think it would be harder for apple to do what they do.

I understand the part with the warranty... but the proper way would be that maybe at LG themselves you'd only get spare parts by the pallette, and at the brokers you'd get smaller amounts at higher prices (of course). I remember it used to work similarly with computer games back in the early 90's when they still came on diskettes... there were two distributors in Austria who would buy the games in large amounts from the manufacturers (I think from some large companies they had to buy at least 25,000 per order if I remember right), and from them the dealers would get them in smaller quantities, like 1 piece of this, 3 of that, 2 pices of another etc., but much closer to retail price and even more expensive than they were in retail in Germany (but I could be wrong about that part).

All parts should be stocked by Apple for repair in countries where they sell.
They used to do that for car manufacturers, things are so much better now that they don't require this anymore. /s
They don't even need to do that. Just let the companies that make the parts sell them to the repair shops. That's how it used to be many years ago, but Apple has become so powerful they can demand the parts producers only sell those parts to Apple.

I somehow found a boardview for my couple Asus motherboards from 2012 and spent a full day to figure out how to read it. Then I found some important details in them that I promptly put to use in coreboot. Looks like I will hang on to them forever.

We need to know what products have parts issues. Those we cant grt repaired or upgraded so that us the consumer just no bother buying.

at least with dell it's easy to buy parts thru partspeople and they give you service manuals. I tried to fix a toshiba laptop and I couldn't even get drivers for it that weren't from some janky we-transfer or meaty-a-fire link from an obscure forum I have to register on and post 10 times to get links. and I had to wing it when it came to servicing it. lenovo is decent w servicing like dell but the whole cee cee pee thing and the malware/spyware thing grinds my gears!

Between serialization/pairing, partner subjugation, machine shredding, manufacturer binding, profitable 3rdP repair infeasibility, and other methods, they have mitigated the risk of allowance.
