Who knew that moment when you predicted this whole "expansion" story upon watching the trailer? Hatred now has hold of an entire faith that when revived, coupled with the shaken cathedral of light, will compel sanctuary to side with akarat (mephisto)
I love how the main character in this first-person RPG is ... Neyrelle. Also, has anyone kept track of how many characters follow the "oh, they were so good but they've been corrupted and now I have to kill them" trope? Honestly, in Diablo V we should just preemptively kill anyone who tries to help us before they inevitably turn evil :P
I get that the “light” was corrupted, but they should have made a holy sword and board path that stood up to the corrupted knights. Paladins and crusaders didn’t follow in inarius.
It's so wild how they fooled us all the time with the name of the expansion. When it was revealed i still rememeber hiw everyone was saying "we know it's the girl" When i found out they were basicall foreshadowing the end of the expansion i couldnt believe how smart the title actually was. I wasn't really that much invested into the story while playing and think it wasn't really told very well im still glad they didnt burn mephisto as a Bossfight yet and decided to build up on it instead. This was an incredibly well done video that hooked me every second even if i know the story already!
The whole expansion I was just thinking siding with Lilith would have been a better option. I hate participating in a story with a better solution constantly yelling at me in the back of my mind.
Dude, The game begins by telling you that the sanctuary fell, the prophecy was fulfilled, what you are playing is the past to see how the destruction of the sanctuary happened, you cannot make decisions because they have already been made.
Almost making me want to buy it. Diablo has been a franchise that influenced my enjoyment of datk fantasy and D&D. Just has a special place in my gaming soulstone.
I am looking forward to what's coming, but I wish it didn't come at the cost of using an entire bloody expansion as essentially a setup arc. And, as others have mentioned, the abundance of questions that have remained unanswered. Where the hell are all the angels and what are they doing?
"I saw my corpse, & from my mouth crawled hatred. A father burned his children on a pyre, & a mother molded a new age from the ashes. I saw the weak made strong, a pack of lambs feasting on wolves. Tears of blood rained on a desert jewel, & the way to hell was torn asunder. Then came a spear of light, piercing hatred's heart, & he who was bound in chains was set free." Interesting prophecy. It's broken down into 5 sentences. The 1st & 3rd I'm still stuck on, so maybe someone can fill me in on this with their thoughts. Although Mephisto is associated with the wolf, the lambs feasting on wolves could mean that something rises up to fight Mephisto. But the 2nd - "Father burned his children" makes me think of Inarius or Urivar, & that Reverend Mother Prava is the mother who molds a new age from the ashes (as referenced at the end of VoH). The 4th - "Tears of blood... Hell was torn asunder." obviously refers to Caldeum & how Lilith entered Mephisto's realm of hatred. This could reference the turning of events leading to Mephisto's imprisonment in the soulstone & his release as essentially hell broke loose with the Helltides, Neyrelle's journey in VoH, & how strong Mephisto's influence has been since the gates opened. The 5th - "Then came a spear of light... bound in chains was set free." I'm thinking this has something to do with the Mephisto-possessed Akarat.
It's no secret the writers attempted to sway the audience to appreciate Neyrelle's heroic sacrifice, sympathizing for her struggle, and admiring her strong and independent spirit. However such modern agenda move rang hollow as she looked alot more like a ranaway overconfident teenager who thought she knew better, that she alone could do this, and adults were men whose counsels are not worth consulting. She didnt know what she was doing/going and ended up unleasing disasters followed her wake and cause us to chase and bail her out. At least our D3 girlboss was abit more relatable , less lectury, trying to be helpful but met tragic end of not her choosing. Not sure why they devoted entire exp for this girl who just not long ago injected her way into our story, and dragging down an otherwise strong expansion in terms of gameplay and reworks of content
I was waiting for this video and wow - great job! Thanks Nyx! I saw lots of people criticising the VoH lore, but I really like it. It was a bold decision to not let us kill Meph yet, but I think him possesing Akarat's body opens a cool and nasty way for Mephisto to mess with the people of Sanctuary. Wonder if he will pretend to be Akarat reborn
I agree. I've seen a lot of negative reception to the lore but I'm also quite intrigued as to how we will battle Akarat-Mephisto. Hopfully the build-up will be epic.
Agreed. This just opened a lot of possibilities. With the cathedral of light in shambles, he's surely going to take advantage of bringing in more followers and start a holy war. Is he going to use the zakarum, the triune or start another religion perhaps being the antichrist now? This kinda feels we might get a paladin/crusader/templar like class next expansion as well.
@@MondianP with Prava becoming our bestie we might get a Pale?penitent Knight as a new class I think. And yeah - Meph seems to become an antichrist///antiakarat/ antirat :D
@@ajsti91 only thing I didn't like was Prava suddenly becoming our bff after getting screwed over in hell. Was hoping we took her out and not some nobody like Urivar lol. Kinda expected we wouldnt take out Meph right away though they're trying it differently though and doing it long term despite this expansion being a massive cliffhanger. Still think Lilith and Rathma would be back, Lilith's blood and Rathma's prophecy are still focal points of the story.
Your character literally got stabbed through the back sticking out your chest, with a gaping open chest/back wound you fell into swampy jungle water that in any real world would have parasites swimming up and laying eggs in your weiner, and you came out of it like it never happened. Neyrelle had another man inside her who gave her a relatively mild case of stigmata. Who has the real plot armor here?
@@notbrad4873 The question is WHY did our character get backstabbed so easily? We took out the daughter of a prime evil in a fight, yet we apparently are hopeless to noticing a guy moving behind us, backstabbing us with a dagger, not to mention we have taken far more devistating blows then a dagger that has done far less damage to us. I mean its plot armor with Neryelle is resisting a prime evils influence as the world around her is being corrupted because she gives a prayer? The horadrim struggled to find a way to contain Baal and the Wanderer's only solution was to embed the stone in himself to try and contain the evil. Far more wise and expereinced individuals have tried to find ways to contain a prime evil and quickly fell, yet a little girl can just casually carry the stone around and be fine? MInd you a prime evil that was at pretty much full regenerated power. The D2 hero only held the soulstones of the freshly defeated Prime Evils for a very short time after taking hold, while Marius having the soulstone SEPERATED from Baal in what would of been likely several months at most had mentally deteriorated.
Im honestly amazed and impressed you managed to spread out this story to 40mins. Without all the fluff in game you could easily tell the story in 5mins😂
From a lore stand point the expansion was great, as well as the lessons on grief, regret, guilt etc. All of that was handled really well. The problem is how short it was left alot of things that could have been truly peak moments as lackluster. Duders stabs us in the back and kicks us in water setting up for a major encounter later as well as reminding the player and the wanderer even though theyve killed lilith and have fought through hell they are still fragile and mortal. Dudes hunting down neyrelle as well. So outside the opening does he really pose any threat tension etc? Fuck no. We only see him again one more time when we kill him. He doesnt even come close to getting to neyrelle which could have lead to a proper threat outside mephisto and the stone to her. The ending felt rushed and the mephisto fight kinda just felt anticlimatic and there was basicly 0 actual fight to worry about. I woulf have liked for mephistos herald to feel like a proper threat in the fight as well. The the other dude betraying us felt like a easy to see happening ahead of time thing that was building so i didnt mind it but also i would have liked a bit more, for it to go darker. Neyrelle being saved felt like them wanting to avoid a Leah 2.0 situation which i do get. But the way neyrelles story was going id have actually liked to see the soulstone completely and permentantly take her and we get a full blown reborn mephisto fight. Also where the hell did lorath go? Dude got the lead to chase neyrelle then we never see him. Dude must of have gotten lost wherever the d3 nephillim went on vacation lol Over all from a lore and spectacle stand point and a lesson stand point it was great. But from a expansion and player stand point it was way to short, not enough was fleshed out and it feels like we only got half an expansion worth of length. I finished it all in maybe 6 hours outside of a bug where i had to redo the final quest cause i got dc'd before the portal. End game stuff is enjoyable and spiritborns also enjoyable. Tldr- good lore, good themes. to short, not satisfied, spiritborn fun.
Say what you want but Urivar was smart asf not wasting that opportunity to stab us while we were distracted. Like we the mfer that took out Lilith, it’d be dumb not to do that with how powerful we must be to survive hell as a Victor.
Thanks for this! Im a diablo lore fanatic and didn't want to buy this dlc/xpac. But as you said that you know it will repeat itself, talking about meph.......what if we get to go back to the city of the damned and destroy the soulstones on the hellforge again! GIVE ME THEM RUNES!
When I was playing through the story I was like ok cool I'll finish the rest of the story later. So I was looking for more story quest and couldn't find any and thought I had to finish citadel to progress through. Out of curiosity I checked out your video and was like that was the whole story...... for an expansion it felt underwhelming and thought we would be fighting Mephisto this expansion. Maybe they will include him in one of the seasons? If we have to wait for another year'ish to actually get Mephisto then wow that's gonna be a while. Plus they have to introduce baal and diablo at some point as well as the high heavens so they really are expanding the diablo universe.
I'm often critical of Blizzard, but credit where credit is due: they knocked it out of the park with the new expansion. The new systems are a big improvement, the new class is interesting, the writing is tight and almost poetic in some spots, and the story is scaled down and extremely personal. And its ultimate message about the perseverance of the human spirit was a wonderful change of pace for a series that can sometimes lean too heavily into edgelord nonsense. This is was a story about saving a single soul - a story about people helping each other through incredibly challenging circumstances, not about killing demons, and I love that. 10/10
Not super big on the story myself, felt it deviated from the tone of the series overall and was paced weirdly. That said, it is refreshing to see a different perspective and I appreciate yours
Cutscenes and Cinematics team doing the heavy lifting as usual, from D3 onwards. Meanwhile for the story directiion: MEH When Baal was introduced in LOD expansion, it so satisfying. Act 5 alone beats this plot.
For those that are b*tching that Diablo still didn't have an appearence on D4, here a little story recap: Mephi is the mastermind behind the events of D1 and D2, all three primes were captured and imprisoned, yet Mephisto was the one that was able to free himself and also corrupting the Zakarum. Mephisto was the one who sent Lazarus to free Diablo (D1), and the one ordering him to free Baal (D2). Baal corrupting the worldstone (D2 LoD) was also plan of Mephisto. If the three Primes were a body Diablo is the right hand, Baal the left hand and Mephisto the brain. It is a fresh breeze to not only see brash evil in form of Diablo, but seeing the other side of evil, manipulations, corruption etc. from Mephisto's side.
Inarius most likely got stuck in Hell to get Izual'd Lilith - not sure - Mephisto could ensure her permadeath or arrange for someone to conume her reforming esence. Can go both ways
Urivar was woefully underutilized but that's just my opinion. He could have been a real menace going forward but that's not happening. Side note, glad to see people being at least SOMEWHAT civil in the comments so far, and actually giving ideas instead of just spewing 'game bad, kys blizzard' everywhere. There are a lot of really great moments and while I can completely understand the disappointment that a lot of people felt but I think people either intentionally or unintentionally ignore a lot of the (or at least what I think are) genuinely good parts because they get swept up in the hate. (Go figure, given we are talking about Mephisto related things) Then again, I'm not a writer or a creative type so I'm definitely not the go to for any literary analysis of D4's expansion.
Yeah all this time you were thinking NEYRELLE was the veasel of hatred. That was a trick. Its was AKARAT that turned out to be the vessel. NO LORATH in the story too. Sneaky.
I don't know why but I disliked Nyriel from the very beginning and thought that she was a side NPC. So I was surprised that she became the main character. Anyway, that's just my preference, I'm all limbs for Inarius and Lilith hah. And yeah, where are other Angels and Evils? (At least smth they, the Devs, could have hinted smth, I don't know ) Lorath? I didn't understand what happened to him. Thank you for the video! Respect and extolment for passion for lore and narration skills.

That's the issue with this. They had such a good manipulator and mind game player. They blew it. @@NyxVellum
I skipped the entire campaign dialogue cause I’m just no interested in ARPG lore but coming here has peaked my interest
I bet Lorath is seeking Tyriel. Could be Tristram?
I like this idea
It would have done better if the story didn’t seem rushed. Urivar was wasted. I was hoping we got more of him.
We might be getting a paladin or a Crusader or a templar in the new coming up expansion.
Don't give me hope! 😅
@@NyxVellumit’s a popular and most requested class no way blizzard is going to say no to that
Thank you for the awesome video! Your lore vids are brilliant! Can't wait for the next one!!
Thank you! I just released the new one/
Why is Diablo no longer the main villain? they might as well rename Diablo to Mephisto
Well done Bradah 🤙🏽
Do you make audio books? Great voice.
Amazing stuff, good narration, its like Vaati does for souls game.
Thanks for making this video and saving me money.
Awesome work!
Thank you! Cheers!
I get that the “light” was corrupted, but they should have made a holy sword and board path that stood up to the corrupted knights. Paladins and crusaders didn’t follow in inarius.
It's so wild how they fooled us all the time with the name of the expansion.
When it was revealed i still rememeber hiw everyone was saying "we know it's the girl"
When i found out they were basicall foreshadowing the end of the expansion i couldnt believe how smart the title actually was.
@@Knight_of_Ren We are not playing a prequel. D4 is a continuation of the Diablo story.
Awesome video mate, appreciate it
Almost making me want to buy it. Diablo has been a franchise that influenced my enjoyment of datk fantasy and D&D. Just has a special place in my gaming soulstone.
Great rundown
nice video loved it
I have two words for this. And they're both "Nice"
God Tier narration bro!!!
I am looking forward to what's coming, but I wish it didn't come at the cost of using an entire bloody expansion as essentially a setup arc.
And, as others have mentioned, the abundance of questions that have remained unanswered. Where the hell are all the angels and what are they doing?
Mefisto is now an evil Jesus!!! Amazing narration! 👍
Thanks for this, want to keep up with the story; couldnt justify the purchase of vessel.
cant wait for new expansion
Me too!
Thank you for playing the game for us, so we don’t have to.
Then came a spear of light, piercing hatred's heart, & he who was bound in chains was set free."
Interesting prophecy.
Great narration. It was like listening to an actual book lol
There is a side quest, I forgot the name. Where we help a guy and he gets killed by a demon with a red soulstone. Is that Diablo?
Ouuuuh, what side quest is this??
@@NyxVellum It is in part 2 of Everything Old sside quest
Can't stand nyrelle.....weak character....
Thank you for the kind words.
Glad Nerylelle has insane plot armor. Sure doesn't make me hate a character I disliked already even more.
Every Diablo is the soul stone taking over the host turning into the next Diablo.
Im honestly amazed and impressed you managed to spread out this story to 40mins. Without all the fluff in game you could easily tell the story in 5mins😂
I wanted to cover the entire story. There are some good bits! I have another video which recaps the ending that is about 10 minutes.
@NyxVellum they need more story tellers like you at blizzard
Neryelle.......the worst storyline the diablo franchise has ever spewed out
I loved it
neyrelle cute so it's the best
@JoJoZaka no, it's the worst....by far
Neryelle might be another Leah but that would be too repetitive
@@feanorwindwhispers9936 another every character that has tried to take a soulstone.....it's been dun 4 times now
great video
Thanks!
Dude must of have gotten lost wherever the d3 nephillim went on vacation lol
Over all from a lore and spectacle stand point and a lesson stand point it was great.
Nedeed 2 more acts and kill Mephisto. They cheaped out this one. Was extemelly dissapointed.
Say what you want but Urivar was smart asf not wasting that opportunity to stab us while we were distracted. Like we the mfer that took out Lilith, it’d be dumb not to do that with how powerful we must be to survive hell as a Victor.
I was really invested until the end, it seemed like a bit of a anticlimax but I guess I shouldn’t have expected a 1:1 fight with Mephisto
Lorath had so much to say afterwards.. where the hell was he with his drunk a**
He was hungover 😂
Thank you for this video.
ah, that`s what's going on behind my huge dmg numbers.
😂
great video, thanks.
Cutscenes and Cinematics team doing the heavy lifting as usual, from D3 onwards.
Meanwhile for the story directiion: MEH
When Baal was introduced in LOD expansion, it so satisfying. Act 5 alone beats this plot.
❤️ this video so much!
For those that are b*tching that Diablo still didn't have an appearence on D4, here a little story recap:
Mephi is the mastermind behind the events of D1 and D2, all three primes were captured and imprisoned, yet Mephisto was the one that was able to free himself and also corrupting the Zakarum.
Can Inarius ever be truly gone with the way angels are reborn? Or Lilith, for that matter.
Inarius most likely got stuck in Hell to get Izual'd
Lilith - not sure - Mephisto could ensure her permadeath or arrange for someone to conume her reforming esence.
Well said
0:25 I’m sooo smart I did exactly what didn’t work in the past because I’m a woman!
#GirlBoss
Fetch quest after fetch quest. Just give me 6 quests to kill main bosses and be done with it.
Yeah all this time you were thinking NEYRELLE was the veasel of hatred. That was a trick. Its was AKARAT that turned out to be the vessel. NO LORATH in the story too. Sneaky.
Prava did not deserve a redemption arc especially after the shit she pulled in Hell.
Did you do a video on what’s coming next!
So if I get this right. There is a chance Diablo and Baal could return to the series?
If there is ever another expansion or Diablo 5 there better be a Knight class.
it seems like they really gonna stretch the prime evil story this time, we got full game + xpac without ending any of the prime evils, its all like a set up so far, xpac feels like filler because of it
Diablo 2 managed to tell way more with wayyyyy less
It felt like a patch rather than an expansion in terms of story.
Neyrelle is to Diablo what Rey was to Star Wars ….a disappointing mess
Thank you for this video mate. You spared me from having to buy D4, just to know the lore 😊 I love lore videos and I even got a D4 closed beta invite and played it, but when I played it I realised that I really didn’t like the gfx or the gameplay, so it made me wanna buy the game even less.
