The moment when she comes closer to her son's dead body, how her voice changes, you can literally feel a deep sense of grief coming from a mother that got her most precious treasure stolen from her. What she says after, that she would have kept his place for him alongside her, knowing that he could've disagreed, tops this sequence off.(Spoiler alert) In the endgame cinematic when they fight with Inarius, i can't get out from the feeling ,that even after being stabbed by him, she still gives him choice, the whole sequence prior to that shows that she wanted to talk but on her own terms. One on one, and through the later sequence when she stabs him in return, i can't help myself not to feel hate towards Inarius. He had lied to his children promising ascension that will never happen, he decided to cowardly run a away from the responsibility for his actions and instead sacrifice his children as a matter of getting himself back to heaven. When Lilith said "Silence is their judgment", you can really feel the desperation and terror in Inarius's voice. TLDR: Voice cast and animation folks at BLIZZARD did a phenomenal job making those characters alive believable
In my opinion the part of the prophecy that said "a spear of light will pierce Hatred's heart" could also be interpreted as Lilith stabbing Inarius with his own spear. He had become so hateful towards Lilith and Sanctuary in general.
@@rodrigoordonez2295 This is the tragedy of both the Mother and Father of Sanctuary. By the time of Diablo 4, Inarius and Lilith were both consumed by Mephisto's Hatred. A twisted plan the Lord of Hatred set all of us on. The main character, Lilith, Inarius, and most of the side characters we bring with us are driven by Hatred, pawns in Mephisto's long game. Inarius and Lilith are not the characters we see in D4. These versions of them are twisted by Hatred incarnate. Inarius and Lilith, when not being manipulated by Hatred, are complex but ultimately benevolent. My hope is that we eventually find a way to bring Inarius and Lilith back, free of Hatred's corruption, and we can fight for a better future for Sanctuary - finding allies in fellow Nephalem, the Father's light, and Mother's blood; Perhaps even finding demonic allies as well, those demons that still roam Sanctuary and elsewhere, wanting to be free of the eternal conflict and live in peace with the Nephalem and humanity. We know these demons exist, and (spoiler alert) can even meet one such demon in the desert that has bound his spirit with another to live amongst humanity and indulge in the creations and creature comforts of humanity. D4's tagline is "return to darkness". What better way to showcase this than allow players to dive into humanity's darker nature, to strike truer to Rathma's balance and Sanctuary's first and intended nature. In prior games, we allied ourselves almost universally with the angelic side of the eternal conflict, to *disastrous* consequence.
@@rodrigoordonez2295 Mephisto also foreshadows this, as during one of the sequences where he bails us out of like the 3rd trance we get into, he proudly states that Inarius had hatred his in his heart that was greatly worsened from his torture. Inarius' heart at this point was little more than a ball of pure, high-condensed spite.
That's the thing with Lilith, she is so motherly that we cannot help but wanting her love and feeling sympathy for her but is it really mother's love or are we entranced by her power?
Right? She's not gone forever. She's going to recover eventually. I wonder if the devil gets a redemption arc where we realise we actually need her and she changes tactic and decides the best way to help her children is to assist rather than control. Plus inarius has died in hell. The way they said they don't know what will happen is setting something up.
Regarding Lilith's motivation being "up for interpretation" (motherly feelings vs wanting to win and end the Eternal Conflict): she absolutely doesn't seem to mind "the weak" being torn apart by wolves when she's chatting with Elias in one of D4 cutscenes (A3 if I remember right). That was also a human - i.e. one of her children - being torn up. She says "I have not come to save, but to empower; in my shadow, the strong will oppose the might of Hell itself; let the weak fend for themselves." If her 'motherly love' only applies to those who are strong enough to be by her side when she goes to conquer Hell, and the rest can bugger off and 'fend for themselves', then her values and motivations are pretty clear, no? If she values her children purely on the "how useful is this one to me for conquering hell?" scale, then imo it's very little to do with motherly love and everything to do with wanting to win the conflict and become the most powerful entity + army in existence. Which btw is pretty cool, and I think she's very well written as a villain. But like, she flat out states "I'm not here to save humanity/nephalem", and somehow people still try to spin the "she's just trying to save her children" angle.
@@jordonlegge448 I think it's a part of her deception. Sewing hatred and operating from the shadows is kind of the whole theme of Hatred Evils (Mephisto, Belial, and now Lilith - all have used lying and deceit as their methods).
You can also interpret strong as those who would turn away from the light and make their own choice. I think Lilith was the better option for humanity as she was at least willing to protect those that accepted her where as Inarius was just using humanity as a means to an end (his ascension back into the High Heavens.)
@@DrClawizdead you think Lilith was the better option for humanity when she was convincing people to try to kill their friends and family members all for the benefit of pleasing her… LOL.
@@aries148 yes, when the other options are death by demons. Or slaughter by angels. Highest human kill count in Diablo world is still held by an angel. Siding with Lilith seems a lot better here.
Honestly it’s really crazy how Blizzard constructed a story where the player really doesn’t know who to trust with Sanctuary. This was my first Diablo game and when I first met Inarius I was like “oh he looks cool. But he’s a total a-hole” and Lilith is “Yeah she’s a demon and inherently evil but… are her plans bad for US?” And clearly they probably would be but we can’t be sure about it. She is such a great character! Edit: Also keep up this great work man! You’re slowly becoming my one-stop shop for Diablo lore and your narration is great! Think you have a good thing going here!
Thats very kind of you. I'm trying my best and I've got big plans. In regards to the story of Diablo 4, being able to side with Lilith or Mephisto would have been insanely cool. It would make sense too. You pick a side, get custom gear that makes you stand out. One day maybe.
@@NyxVellum It doesn't make sense in Blizzard's monetary plans for Diablo 4 since they're incapable of creating multi-linear storytelling in MMO or in any game they've created in their lifespan. It could have been a fight to take down the prime evils and give that power to Lillith in order for her to break the prison we're in between angels and demons - maybe seperate our world from theirs entirely. The amount of storytelling potential in that is insane, but Blizzard would rather go the safe route and repeat the story over and over with possession and soulstones..
In theory, Lilith's followers are correct. Unfortunately, they speak correct theories from mountains of corpses. It is by their actions that we know they must be stopped.
I'm really impressed with the quality of storytelling in this series. Such rich detail and originality. The Tree of Whispers could have a lore video of its own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this take on Lilith. I honestly believe that at the first creation of her children she was killing to protect. When she comes back both times I think time in the hole left her with a bad taste in her mouth. I was glad to see her kill Inarius and I think she deserved more than what she got but she was a villian by the time of D4. Her hatred of everyone was so out of control that it was no longer about saving it was about revenge. I mean she could have just killed Inarius, but instead she played with his emotions and then painfully ripped the light right out of him. She went a little cra cra.
I often find when watching lore videos from any game they forget to say "this is for interpretation" thank you for adding this! Make it much easier to follow than thinking "where did i miss this part?" in my head when watching the rest! great vids
Lilith is a very complex character, she desperately fought to save her children but she's also very manipulative, I just can't help but wanting to fight for her and not against her
I think she genuinely wanted to destroy the Prime Evils and whoever threatens sanctuary. We won't know now how she would've ruled the world after that, but she wants to empower humanity and have them reclaim their powers again. I'm sure she knows that humanity could turn against her at any moment, but for now, she just wanted to break free of the conflict, which was what lead to the creation of Sanctuary to begin with.
From What I understand of the lore, all demons respawn, so she can be back at some point. Inarus is dead though. Angles don't respawn. (with the one exception being Tyrael for some reason)
Great video. It confirmed my suspicions, Lilith isn’t the evil “demon” that everyone made her out to be. She’s far from perfect, after all she has committed atrocities but her history shows she’s always had our best interests as a collective whole at heart, at least from a future standpoint. (SPOILER WARNING) The problem with her is how she uses people to get what she needs. Yorin for example, was innocent as all hell, and she willingly threw him to the wolves in exchange for what she needed. Granted if I were to play Devil’s advocate she JUST got out of the void, with barely any followers left, and has very few strings to pull in order to do what SHE thinks is necessary to bring out our strengths to end this war with her as the victor. But through these actions I can see why people would deem her evil, and yes I agree it isn’t morally right. But morality, as we’ve seen in the campaign, can often steer you from your goal. Look at Lorath’s compassion towards Donan’s death. Had he left Donan they probably would of caught up to Nyrelle and mephisto’s soulstone would be safe and not in the hands of a reckless teenager. In any case we’ll just have to see how this all plays out as the seasons progress.
I think by the confines of this universe (which is awful and brutal) she isn't that bad. A high council member representing HEAVEN literally wiped out half of humanity in D3, and since the conception of Sanctuary both realms of Heaven/Hell have caused so much blood shed and carnage. If it wasn't for Tyrael the heavens were going to descend upon Sanctuary and wipe it from existence. All the destruction she caused was for a purpose though, a bloody purpose but there was a reason behind it. Andariel and Duriel had turned on the brothers before, and she wanted the blood shed to bring them into Sanctuary using them as weapons of war AGAINST HELL. I believe there was a line in the campaign where she wanted to use Andrariel as a font to siphon power from her, so it's fairly apparent that her own kind (demons) are just tools for her as well. Her warpath and direction was fairly clear, but as mortals most aren't prepared for that type of loss, which is why the main cast opposed her and why ultimately she sounded so defeated at the end. She's not thinking short term, her entire goal is long term. She doesn't care about the immediate loss of demons, angels or humans. What she cares about is winning the eternal conflict and having her children (Sanctuary) rule both the Heavens/Hells. She would absorb her fathers essence, conquer the rest of hell, unite the rest of humanity then proceed to conquer the heavens as well. Pretty much a full extinction scenario for both Heaven/Hell, with huge losses/culling to humanity in the process. But over time her children would slowly grow back to what they once were, and any opposition or uprisings in either of the other realms would be met with swift action. All of this assuming she was true to her word (which as brutal as she is, I do believe she wants the conflict to stop and her children on Sanctuary to remain).
Another part of Yorin's fate is that Lilith needed to make a deal with Astaroth beyond just freeing him. Astaroth brushed her off even when offered freedom from his soulstone until she offered Yorin, the son of the one who imprisoned Astaroth, and that got him to agree to her terms. As unfortunate as it is, Lilith could not go anywhere near Mephisto without sacrificing Yorin to Astaroth because that was the thing that tipped Astaroth's loyalty to Mephisto enough to agree to her deal to get to Mephisto. The tragic irony is that if Yorin didn't try to charge in and stop Lilith, she would have lost then and there because Astaroth would have refused to grant her safe passage to Mephisto, and thus her plans would have fallen apart.
@@Grommash1000 beautifully put. Which is exactly why I’m lo key salty the campaign didn’t let us choose her side, and even goes out of its way to sway us to hate Lilith by showing us what she’s done to the few she’s had to sacrifice for her version of the greater good. Her death at the end was also kind of heart wrenching if you look closely. The blood coming from her eyes, call it the speculation of a madman but I honestly think those were legit tears, that she’s given us free will to rebel against both heaven and hell and fight for humanity, or technically the nephilim, and instead of siding with the only semi primordial being on our side (aside from Tyrael and maybe others, I’m fairly new to Diablo) we chose to march against her, foil her plans, and kill her. Her expression showed sadness, maybe even a hint of hatred, that her children can be so blind, following an Angel (Inarius) who hated and depowered them, others following the will of prime evils that stem from hell, who just see them as a tool to win the war, or those like the horadrim (Lorath specifically) who are too scared to follow a better alternative (Lilith) that will benefit humanity in the long run. What’s even worse is that when she returns she might actually be a villain now depending if rising sanctuary against heaven and hell is still her goal or not. It all depends on how hard our betrayal hit her
Note, those "Mother's" cultists are not, in fact, followers of Lilith. They are Triune cultists, primarily driven by Mephisto. Our Mother, much like our Father and even our own character(s) were manipulated by the Lord of Hatred from the very onset.
Fighting Heaven doesn't actually make much sense. We don't know why they have retreated as yet... but post Maltheal my thinking is that they wanted to separate as much for our benefit as anything else... to limit the amount the war impacts Sanctuary maybe? MOST of the remaining angels are the good guys, Imperious is an asshole yeah... but Tyreal, Auriel and Ithereal are 3/4ths of the remaining council and they are ALL cool with humans (I suppose Maltheil will eventually reform but I can't help but imagine he's going into heaven jail when he does). Ithereal I suppose might 'possibly' be swayed to side with Imperius... but I doubt it as he and Auriel BOTH were the quickest to vote that humans should be left alone and allowed to thrive with Tyreal only casting a vote on a stalemate. Tyreal and Auriel likely would NEVER pose a threat to human beings... the only way I could see heaven posing an issue would be if Ithereal swapped to Imperius and ousted human Tyreal so that the two of them outvoted Auriel........... but it's a stretch.... EVEN Imperius has got to have warmed up to humans a bit after we like, you know, aided them in keeping the demons out.
@@lenajohnson6179 Angels are not reformed. Malthael is dead, and a new angel was born in his place. What doesn't make sense is chosing Mephisto over Lillith. Sealing him into the soulstone was incredibly stupid idea and a copout. They both knew it doesn't work and Blizzard is making this decision because they don't know how to make a protagonist and their story morally grey. Instead we get to see another wanderer with a soulstone in its possession about to possess its carrier. Its too predictable..
Blizzard did a copout with Lilltih to be brutally honest. We could have had a morally grey protagonist MC, and a great anti-hero in Lillith. Instead of taking out the prime evils, breaking out of the prison of angels and demons and creating a new sanctuary, we're doomed to watch the story almost literally repeat itself with a wanderer carrying a soulstone with a predictable end - Mephisto in female form, like Diablo with Leah. I get that the game is called Diablo and all, but honestly, I would have much rather Lillith be kept alive throughout at least one expansion than this, anti-climactic ending stemming from storytelling cowardice from Blizzard.
I didn't mind the ending because it reaffirms the theme of the eternal conflict. Lilith on her death bed is absolutely disgusted with our decision and essentially scolding us for not thinking about the long term. She can be 'dead' and still be an anti-hero, and considering she's a demon (and I'd also say quite a popular character) it's a pretty easy character to bring back without bending the rules of this universe at all. If this wasn't an ARPG that had to keep going or a single player game, the approach of letting you choose to side with her, or at least take the story in a different direction would've been a really cool departure. Literally conquering Hell in one campaign only for the next one to conquer the Heavens.
Yet another great video. I love how layered Lilith is. She is not just another demonic villain for us to step on. You can hear the grief in her voice beside the dead body of her son (props to the amazing voice acting). Even Elias says despite being her follower/ summoner, she is not “good” by any stretch of the idea while simultaneously she is the only proper hope against the chaos that is the conflict of heaven and hell. Writers imo tried to place her separate from our concept of morals and it plays well.
Last night I finally completed the Main Story and I felt terrible for both Inarius and Lilith. Rejected by Heaven, willingly given to Mephisto, deceived by Lilith under the guise of acceptance. Then lilith, born into an endless, Eternal conflict that would see her undoubtedly destroyed, thrown against the bulwark of the High Heavens or used for some small, temporary gain for the Burning Hells.
After playing the story of D4, i somehow hoped, that you could make a decision in the end, to follow Lilith. Inarius never cared for his firstborn, nor the humanity itself. For him, the humans are a failure and if he has to kill every human, to reclaim his place amongst the angels, he wouldn't hesitate to do so. His church is full of fanatics, who call the players character a heretic, even after you've slain Lilith. Lilith on the other hand seemed to still search for a way out of the eternal conflict and for doing so, she needs to help her children to reach their fullest potential
To be fair, we supposedly brought a great evil into the world (not mephisto, because prava wouldnt know about that). Either that, or prava is angery that we took the soul stone to stop lilith after inarius died(which she somehow knew from the explosion?) Idk, the last hour of the game was just chock full of terrible writing and seeming mistakes that I dont know what can even be respected
I think Lilith truly loves humanity as the mother, but in the way as a demon and her path wouldn't be too far off to side with the hell, well, her version of hell. She does give humanity the best she could wish for, free will, strong power and a world free from the angels. I mean angels are far worse than demons in most of Diablo's story line, they literally want to eliminate humankind multiple time, and see humans as something that needs to be cleaned, while the hell more sees humans as a usable resource. But for a human point of view, siding with Lilith wouldn't be too much different from siding with any other demon, and the chance of winning (heaven?) is even less than, for example, siding with Mephisto. But what humans really want is siding with nobody, hence Lilith, as the mother of humankind, is also the first obstacle that needs to be passed. Her last word is also true, as without her, human has to face both heaven and hell in the same time, and the cost will be higher. The problem in this is human, angel and demon all different and has different thinking about their future, and if human really wants to be what they're, I'm afraid both heaven and hell are enemies.
Very well said. While in a universe where most beings are out to either kill or enslave humanity, we really don't have any other choice; but to stand against all who mean humanity harm.
Daughter of Hatred does not mean she hates everything. I had someone pose to me online that because she was the Daughter of Hatred, she was incapable of caring for other beings. But the fact that she went on a murder spree when she found out that her children were being threatened proves this wrong. *Spoiler* This is why I didn't really like the ending of D4. I felt like the players weren't given a choice. I was a lazy way to end this chapter. Maybe it will be resolved in the expansions.
She's the daughter of Hatred because Mephisto is the Prime Evil of Hatred. Ergo, like a son/daughter takes a last name, she too, takes the Hatred moniker. Doesn't neccessarily mean she's hateful at all. In fact, pretty much all of her lore points to the opposite. She loves her kin, and wishes for no more violence, and loves her children, and will enact violence to protect them. Is she evil? Probably, but so are the Angels who in their pragmatism would commit genocide to protect themselves.
What a great video-you told the story VERY well. I liked the complexity to her character, and the blurred lines she and Inarius brought to the Eternal Struggle. This has always been a good dimension to the Diablo lore. Going to watch your other videos now, thank you! 👍
Diablo 4 annoyed me. I don’t like the story beats because the character made every choice the polar opposite of what I’d do. The entire premise of the game is “ Lilith is back and she’s doing *something* let’s stop her regardless”
Yes because they are horadrin on the side of inarius so it makes sense. Plus they saw in the visions that she wanted to open a portal to hell she caused the people in the church to kill the priest… what would u have done differently ?
Great video! And you're the first Diablo lore channel I've seen to make any mention of Uldyssian and Lillith's relationship to him. I would have liked to see more detail on that, such as Lillith's direct manipulation of him and his Edyrem followers, her later return and possession of Uldyssian's childhood friend, turning her into a second lover. And I could be wrong here as my memory is a bit fuzzy (I intend to reread the sin war trilogy soon), while the summoning of demons did play a role in Hell's discovery of sanctuary, I don't remember it being the Vizjerei who did so. There was some kind of change in Diablo lore between D2 and D3 where the Sin War of the Vizjerei instead became known as the Mage Clan Wars in Vizjun (modern day Lut Gholein) and that's where we saw the rise of Horazon and his brother Bartuc. That said I would love to see a video focusing on Uldyssian and the events of the Sin War Trilogy. Major Spoilers here but, my favorite moments were Uldyssian basically bitch slapping Diablo, and literally Speaking Lucion (the mentioned brother of Lillith) into non-existence. Also anything mentioning Rathma, Trag Oul and Uldyssian's Brother Mendeln (later known as Kalan) who were the trio of beings who got away with remembering the events of the Sin War.
Including the events of the Sin War is, I think, necessary. Lilith is repeating history in Diablo 4 by trying to empower humanity, gain their favour, and fight against heaven and hell. Thanks for bringing that particular part of the lore up, I don't think I can get the proper canon facts unless I reread the Sin Wars books myself. Here I go again 😌
I think it was a big mistake on blizzards part to have the players in D4 ever interact with Lilith in person. They should have left players hanging in regards to Lilith. She was too good of a character to have killed off like that.
Man, these videos are awesome. So much research put into them and well presented. The background music is really immersive too. And some of the artwork used is so good. Where do you find all of the art for the videos?
So many places. I start by looking at the artbooks, official artists, then fan art, and then random google searches. I get that a slideshow of images isn't super interactive so its at least my job to make it as relevant as possible.
Just finished the story, and been thinking about what she told us after we defeated her, was it right to kill her? Was imprisoning Mephisto in the souls stone right? She was evil yes, but she wanted to stop whatever is coming now, so many questions, 10/10 story.
Demons don't die. They respawn when you "kill" them. The only known way to actually deal with demons more decisively is to imprison them in a soulstone. Hence, when you "kill" Lilith, she will just be reborn into Mephisto's domain. And since they chose to imprison Mesphisto in a soulstone, the realm of hatred is once again devoid of its leader...or does it? With Lilith "killed", she will now respawn in the realm of hate, free to take over her father's realm while Mephisto is away in Sanctuary.
I wish we got a choice to side with her. It’s clear from her tone when she found rathma, when she imprisons us with the sightless eye, and her final words before she’s slain, that she’s on our side. Sure she wants to raise her army in the hopes to fight, but the war she would of led us into was against both heaven and hell, and I honestly think she only wanted to see overpower them to finally have peace. No more conflict, no more pursuit of power, just a paradise like the name suggests. You can even see her crimson tears before she died, she’s saddened by our betrayal. She’s fought and killed for us and in return we destroy her
Its pretty obvious we did exactly what Mephisto wanted. He pushed them into using the soulstone because he knows exactly what they know, that they don't work for shit, but they conveniently forgot that part so that we can have another wanderer with a soulstone in their possession.. Mephisto was just sitting there in the backround "tihihihi" when he said, "Don't use it on me, that would be bad, Lillith could use it - oh nooo."
@@mariopacudan5889 We literally killed Lillith in the realm of hatred.. We were in Mephisto's bedroom basically. But yes, I don't think Lillith is dead going by the facts of the Diablo universe. I just don't enjoy the copout storytelling Blizzard is doing, rather than allowing us to be the morally grey character that Diablo desperately needs - and the freedom of choosing ourselves.
I haven't played D4 yet, but I wasn't expecting to be treated to the rumbly-gruff cadence of Ralph Ineson in it! 😁 He voiced Cid in 2022's FFXVI, and good lord I needed some more of this man's voice in my life!
If they don't release dlc where you can fight for Lilith from the start, it's as big a ball drop as Overwatch 2. I've been playing games on and off since the 80s and can't remember a villain that had me go "wait, i think she's right" within a single cutscene. The priest is shitting on people for their flaws, and Lilith shows up saying it's ok to just be ok, and i loved it.
Honestly I think Inarius got the better of Lilith and she let him go however I believe she also knew what he was up to. She is not stupid and was onto him the whole time...I dont think she thought he would slay their own son though...that is pretty damn dark and unforgivable. Their final encounter was quite satisfying to watch I must say....what a freakin cinematic and story.
That is why I love the Diablo Lore. Im new to all of this but so mutch is interpretation. The Characters are not good or evil. There is evil in good intensions and a good reason in evil. Its nice that no mater were you stand you can see that both of them are wrong but also have a point. I like that.
At 4:17 it took me a second to realize what I was looking at… I realize it’s a me Innario and Lilly-pie…. But the way the picture looks and the hands and not to mention the upside down but with panties on looking part threw me off for sure. Great vid! Good stuff
So this is why Mephisto is daddy Mephy and the leader of the 3 prime evils. This man orchestrated everything from the start! From Diablo hellfire to return in Diablo4. My man released his Ace in the Sleeve Inarius right before we killed him and smashed his soulstone in Diablo II. And he knew Inarius is a b*tch and would hide, and he knew Lilith ain't out smarting daddy Mephy. And he sure as hell got his brand new shiny soulstone at the end of Diablo 4! And Rathma is the real MVP. He glimpsed into Mephistos head when he merged with the snake, because Mephy is for sure a dang snake, haha. And Rathma wrote that shit down. And letting everyone play themselves and shoot themselves in the foot. Man! Blizzard did a dang good job with this one!!! What a full circle, so satisfying.
Love the videos, just watched the inarius video and youd mentioned having trouble finding certain images. I couldnt help but think (i wonder if something like gpt4 could make you the images you're looking for on the spot when you cant find the content from the game?) Just a thought since im enjoying the videos
Love the amount of detail you go into on your videos, but I did want to point out... at 16:42 you switch to an image of a town. this town is Art from a game called Deadhaus Sonata not Diablo 4 the image has been cropped to cut out any watermarks.
They always told us, if Lilith does that or this will be the end of sanctuary... On what are you basing those assumptions. Knowing that demons can manipulate anyone.
I love how all the comments are Lilith is evil “because she is the daughter of Mephisto” while completely ignoring how she never changes her story and adamantly insists on making humans meet their true potential as nephilim. All while also ignoring that our characters truly screwed up by letting Mephisto out of hell and giving him free access to sanctuary so he can bring back his son.
First, I dont see a single comment saying LIlith is evil. Everyone in these comments is simping over her. Second, our character didn't screw up anything. He didn't let Mephisto out. He (or she) knew he couldn't trust himself since Mephisto kept trying to mess with his mind, so he left the decision to a (relatively) neutral party - Neyrelle. Unfortuntely she, being a naive child who just went through a terrible loss and is trying to prove herself as a new Horadrim, thought she could handle a prime evil and made the wrong choice. Again, quite understandable from her point of view/character development. Everyone keeps giving our main character crap for making wrong decisions, but he's also supposed to be this young'ish and relatively inexperienced adventurer. He's experienced in combat, yes, but not in world-altering events, and Lorath points that out a number of times throughout the story. The only person who truly f-d up seems to be Lorath himself. He let his emotions take over, and just gave up right before the most important decision of the entire story. He could've been that wise/experienced voice Neyrelle needed to hear to not make the mistake. Instead he just stayed behind and wallowed in self pity. And even after he found out what Neyrelle went off to do, he continued to do nothing, and instead just kept feeling sorry for himself. Our character can even ask Lorath "Are we seriously not gonna do anything?", to which he just makes up some excuse like "oh it's too hard" or something like that. A wise Horadrim my ass. But then again, he's been making poor selfish choices the entire game, so maybe that's very much in-character for him.
@@BL00DYME55 so it is our fault? You literally just proved my point. Our characters actions are the direct result of Mephisto being in a soul stone in nyrelles hands. Our characters weren’t unconscious or possessed they willingly said “this stupid idea sounds great let’s do it.”
The thing with Lilith is she never explains her whole plan to anyone. She’s the daughter of the most deceptive demon in existence and she hasn’t fully explained her plan to anyone but preaches she will be the savior and still everyone in the comments is on her side😅😂
I mean, the Angels basically universally want the Nephilim (us) dead. The demons are evil, but so are the angels, who in their selfish pragmatism would commit genocide to wipe anything they fear/ could challenge them, off the face of existence. Kinda lose lose situation, so the lesser evil is Momma Lillith trying to protect us, in whatever twisted way she can. Demons want to use us, and kill us, and the Angels just want us dead.
@@NyxVellum I do believe she wants to use humans to defeat the angels and demons but I’m not sure she really has our best interests in mind. Like what will our world look like if she had succeeded
I didn't realize that the nephalim were clay things formed into people. I thought the angels and demons were doing the horizontal mambo. I imagined a poor, confused angel/demon popping out a human kid and looking at it like "Uuuuuuuuuuuuum....wtf is this thing?"
All this does is confirm my belief that Lilith was not Evil. She was protecting her children. She honest was just protecting us. I hope in the end she comes back and we the Wanderer join her finally seeing what she was talking about. We should have been given the choice to take her hand or not take it. Because I would have took her hand to protect Sanctuary as her champion.
Please do lore about other minor characters like : Donan and his friends who defeated Astaroth , Elias , the exorcist Sister of light ( one of best side mission),Taissa, meshif,
Nothing changed about sanctuary, it doesnt matter who gets center stage, Humanity is the one that suffers. The ultimate solution to the entire series? Find a way to completely finish off Hell entirely and to PERMANENTLY kill the Prime Evils, Lesser Evils and Lilith. Plus also make a deal with heaven.
Keep up the good work sir. Do you think the Oracle will be one of the next classes? they fought alongside the valkyries pre diablo 2. We have never seen them in game that I know of
I would have loved a choice in the endgame. SPOILERS! I would have liked a choice to support Lillith or Inarius.....to choose your allegiance. The Nephalim once again shifting the balance of power. But all this kind of glosses over the events of D1 and D2. So you would fight either Lillith, Inarius, or Mephisto, depending on what you chose. Would have been interesting.
The game almost felt like it was originally intended to give the player a choice, but maybe was removed during production. With this game being closer to an mmo that would also give us that 2 faction dichotomy that exist in most mmo games.
Hey just a quick question - I love watching these videos but I'm still going through the D4 campaign... are there spoilers? I really don't want to mess up my first playthrough! Thanks and keep these videos up, they're awesome
Hi Sean, thanks for your comment. I always put spoiler warnings in my video. You should be safe. This video in particular only spoils Act 1 and I put a huge spoiler warning. I hope you enjoy the campaign.
Oh dude you got a nice reading voice, so as I'm busy traversing sanctuary lore videos just make the journey more interesting, you should definitely do a boss and secret boss lore video on D4, and did you ever cover the fate of the D3 characters in D4, and ever since that Whimsy Dale in D3 and things got uber serious in D4 I often wondered, what happened to whimsy Dale? Is it a real place in sanctuary or Cain having a shroom adventure? I have so Many questions 😅 you got yourself a sub, and not the ham n cheese sort, love ya work
Lilith reminds me of a mother who won't let her child grow up. Who acts as though she protects you with one hand, while she beats with the other. Meanwhile she asks you "why are you making me do this"?
Diablo noob here. I sympathize with Lilith and I enjoyed your video. I became fond of her from seeing the Diablo 4 trailer where she emerged although it gave me a different vision of what she is in the game. In the trailer, she appears as some elemental being, almost a force. I found it disappointing compared to her subsequent appearances, where she's wearing some generic looking outfit and was reduced to looking like just another boss villain. I much prefer to imagine her as that ethereal entity, above the cares of humanity or the petty and unending wars of good vs evil. Again, good content. 🤘
The auto-generated subtitles are hilarious ;-) 7:00 "The birth of their son, Rama, also known as the North Korean, ..." Especially Inarius keeps getting creatively repurposed by the generator.
So the thumbnail is provably wrong as she actually says in the game that she cares nothing for us, she only cares about the strong, not because of who or what we are but because we have the potential to be stronger than Angles or Demons and with that strength she can use us to defeat both allowing her to become the one power in all of creation. She is using us just as much as Mephisto but at least IT is honest about it, so far in all of the Diablo games the only one that has not had ulterior motives is Tyrael just before and after his descent (I was going to say fall but he chose to remove his own angelic mantle).
I think Rathma prophecy was his own death foretold and the consequences of it led to the game events. The spear of light killed Rathma but his mother heart was pierced when she found him. Then, her having the key precipitated events that led to Mephisto release.
thx for this lore. i grew up playing diablo but after d2 it was dead 2 me! but the lore is still awesome so i thank thee. n btw, make a Path of exile series with you going lvl 90+ plz i loved your act one video
....and seriously what ever happened to covetousness shen in D4? no one can give me a concrete answer, maybe you could do a lore vid on that, these vids you make are high primo awesome, really have become a fan of your work, take care till the next vid
Lilith "loves" because the people are the leverage for greater worse plans for humanity. Papa Inarius was blinded by time and was a broken angel at the end. Am I wrong here? I actually don't know the lore deeper than that. Just finished D4 a week ago.
Your first statement is up for interpretation. It's either she really loves her children (look at her affection for Rathma) or she uses them as pawns to fight Heaven and Hell (see the Sin War). Inarius is just a broken angel at this point.
diablo 4 is has a very interesting storyline where you don't really know which side your own anymore... even when you're on the 'right' side you question maybe there's no correct side to be on. i hear a lot of people say lilith is evil look at her minions and so on, but the writers of this game confuse us by making her seem like she has a legitimate motive. at the same time, inarious portrayed as is also selfish and self-absorbing there are many confusing and conflicting things on both sides. in some ways this makes it different than a normal story and appear sophisticated, but in other ways you could argue that this just makes it easier for the writers to pivot the story into whatever they feel like...
This whole video slaps different with the CC on, Lilith gets involved with some nazis, jim norris, the NAS, North Korea, and some artis. Shits fucking wild.
Spoilers - I mean look at the game itself. Lilith is purposefully empowering the people of sanctuary again. In every playable area in the overworld you find lilith altars which just gives you free stats (power of the Nephilim) She was waiting for someone to oppose her, to be strong enough to (final sequence in the hazy place), but (maybe) miscalculated that we the player would not agree with her plans when confronted. Likely due to mephisto's tampering. Her return likely started beings regaining power and mephisto chose us seeing the potential to stand in her way, and put us on the path. Without his involvement I wonder what the choice would have been.
I was waiting for your channel. Calm voice, quiet music and Diablo lore videos. Please continue, i would love to see more
The moment when she comes closer to her son's dead body, how her voice changes, you can literally feel a deep sense of grief coming from a mother that got her most precious treasure stolen from her. What she says after, that she would have kept his place for him alongside her, knowing that he could've disagreed, tops this sequence off.(Spoiler alert)
In the endgame cinematic when they fight with Inarius, i can't get out from the feeling ,that even after being stabbed by him, she still gives him choice, the whole sequence prior to that shows that she wanted to talk but on her own terms.
Yeah the cinematics were insane. She is deeply hurt my Rathma's death.
@@rodrigoordonez2295
Mephisto also foreshadows this, as during one of the sequences where he bails us out of like the 3rd trance we get into, he proudly states that Inarius had hatred his in his heart that was greatly worsened from his torture. Inarius' heart at this point was little more than a ball of pure, high-condensed spite.
That's the thing with Lilith, she is so motherly that we cannot help but wanting her love and feeling sympathy for her but is it really mother's love or are we entranced by her power?
I really REALLY wish they would have let us choose to help Lilith if we wanted to
There’s always a possibility in the (assumed) expansion
Right? She's not gone forever. She's going to recover eventually. I wonder if the devil gets a redemption arc where we realise we actually need her and she changes tactic and decides the best way to help her children is to assist rather than control. Plus inarius has died in hell. The way they said they don't know what will happen is setting something up.
Same!
@@ThunderChild23so Lilith respawns but inarus doesnt?
@@agentnukaz1715 angels are "replaced" in the heavens upon death. Same specs, different minds. Is what I understand it to be.
Which raises yet another question for me. Is she fully lying or does she kind of believe her own bullshit?
Siding with Lilith seems a lot better here.
after finishing the game myself, I'm team Lilith.
Poor Lilith she and we deserved the good ending.
In theory, Lilith's followers are correct. Unfortunately, they speak correct theories from mountains of corpses. It is by their actions that we know they must be stopped.
if only we could choose, id choose lilith
I’m mad I didn’t get to chose!! I would have chosen Lilith hands down
Same!
I'm really impressed with the quality of storytelling in this series. Such rich detail and originality. The Tree of Whispers could have a lore video of its own.
Thank you!
I think after being stabbed in the stomach by somebody you used to trust you're free to kí_.ll your attacker in whatever you please.
Mama Lilith did nothing wrong!!!
*Flashbacks of the Sin War*
Lol I was going to comment this too.
I gotta side with Momma Lil. Fuck Daddy Inarius... He hates us (humans).
Troo dat
Grandpa Meph lied to us and tricked us all. He is the bad guy!
I can't get enough of the diablo story line. Makes my imagination run wild 😅
Same boat. Thanks for your comment!
I often find when watching lore videos from any game they forget to say "this is for interpretation" thank you for adding this! Make it much easier to follow than thinking "where did i miss this part?" in my head when watching the rest! great vids
I'll try and add more of that then. Thank you for your comment.
@bigbadcreepyben Tyrael whas wounded not killed. If I'm correct Angel's get replaced by interely new angels (Not shure if that's true)
Started by watching your lore of diablo video and now I have no choice but to watch all of your videos
Much appreciated.
All great points. Thanks for taking the time to write this up.
@@NyxVellum np, thank you for taking the time to read it 💪
I think by the confines of this universe (which is awful and brutal) she isn't that bad.
I wish we sided with Lilith and fought both Heaven and Hell.
That’s what I was hoping for tbh
Yeah, same.
True but one can dream
@@lenajohnson6179 Angels are not reformed. Malthael is dead, and a new angel was born in his place. What doesn't make sense is chosing Mephisto over Lillith. Sealing him into the soulstone was incredibly stupid idea and a copout. They both knew it doesn't work and Blizzard is making this decision because they don't know how to make a protagonist and their story morally grey. Instead we get to see another wanderer with a soulstone in its possession about to possess its carrier. Its too predictable..
Honestly, I can't blame Inarius for wanting a taste of the Lillussy
With what tongue?
That what they all say until they get hit with the family court and child support. Hope that thot was worth it.
I bet it's stank.
And crusty
Blizzard has a lot of mysoginists and pro-captalist men. It's a horrible company.
Either that, or prava is angery that we took the soul stone to stop lilith after inarius died(which she somehow knew from the explosion?)
Idk, the last hour of the game was just chock full of terrible writing and seeming mistakes that I dont know what can even be respected
I was surprised the game didn't give me a "throw in with Lillith" choice after doing all the storytelling work of making it seem brilliant.
Finally a good video on the lore. Straight to the point and you can tell you actually know what you’re talking about
Thank you
Daughter of Hatred does not mean she hates everything.
@@HauntingSpectrenot necessarily evil, but flawed, as they all are. She is definitely brutal though.
I wish near the end we could of had a choice in how we wanted to proceed with who we wanted to follow.

What a great video-you told the story VERY well. I liked the complexity to her character, and the blurred lines she and Inarius brought to the Eternal Struggle. This has always been a good dimension to the Diablo lore. Going to watch your other videos now, thank you! 👍
That's really kind of you, thank you.
I love Diablo 4’s story and lore in general. It’s actually great
Is it just me or does this storyline make more sense than the one in the Bible??? Great video!
Yeah, siding with Mephisto instead of Lilith was... not great.
I just don't enjoy the copout storytelling Blizzard is doing, rather than allowing us to be the morally grey character that Diablo desperately needs - and the freedom of choosing ourselves.
i think they did love each other at one point, i think what ever love that once existed for him died with Rathma.... rekindling Hatred
Blessed mother,save us ❤
Blessed be.
Whatever the cost
awesome work, glad I found your channel
Awesome, thank you!
I have never watched a single video of yours, but i really like the succinct way you organize stuff
I haven't played D4 yet, but I wasn't expecting to be treated to the rumbly-gruff cadence of Ralph Ineson in it! 😁 He voiced Cid in 2022's FFXVI, and good lord I needed some more of this man's voice in my life!
I really hope we bring her back, she deserves better
man!! this is awesome channel! wish you luck
The birth of Naphalem 7:16 That's not what I had in mind... I always thought they they'd do it the natural way... saddened to hear that..lmao
Great vid! Good stuff
The proportions on that one are a little off but it's the only piece of artwork that has them both caring for each other.
This channel is awesome. Keep up the awesome work dude
Thank you, much appreciated.
Even tho you're torn about the video/script quality, I really liked it! You're doing well!
I was rooting for her the whole game
Love the videos, just watched the inarius video and youd mentioned having trouble finding certain images. I couldnt help but think (i wonder if something like gpt4 could make you the images you're looking for on the spot when you cant find the content from the game?) Just a thought since im enjoying the videos
Thank you for the story! Really enjoyed listening 🎉
Had to come back and watch the story after i beat the game because i was busy with side quests and dungeons, didnt finish story till 51 lol.
Love seeing these views shoot up you deserve it man keep it up
I'm humbled by the amount of views on this one. I don't think I'll be able to do better 😂.
Love the amount of detail you go into on your videos, but I did want to point out...
at 16:42 you switch to an image of a town.
this town is Art from a game called Deadhaus Sonata not Diablo 4
the image has been cropped to cut out any watermarks.
Good stuff. Good presentation and good scripting
Thank you very much for the kind words!
I like to think that Lilith manipulated Inarius initially, but soon grew to actually love him. A little bit of both.
I feel the same way.
They always told us, if Lilith does that or this will be the end of sanctuary... On what are you basing those assumptions. Knowing that demons can manipulate anyone.
Okay that little kid eating got me 😂 cause I was actually eating too while watching this...
Momma Lilith can do no wrong
@@haramberoth117 XD
I mean, the Angels basically universally want the Nephilim (us) dead.
The demons are evil, but so are the angels, who in their selfish pragmatism would commit genocide to wipe anything they fear/ could challenge them, off the face of existence.
Kinda lose lose situation, so the lesser evil is Momma Lillith trying to protect us, in whatever twisted way she can.
Demons want to use us, and kill us, and the Angels just want us dead.
Such a good point.
Horizontal Mambo 😂😂😂😂😂
In the bible the first humans were formed by clay as well
All this does is confirm my belief that Lilith was not Evil. She was protecting her children. She honest was just protecting us. I hope in the end she comes back and we the Wanderer join her finally seeing what she was talking about. We should have been given the choice to take her hand or not take it. Because I would have took her hand to protect Sanctuary as her champion.
Please do lore about other minor characters like : Donan and his friends who defeated Astaroth , Elias , the exorcist Sister of light ( one of best side mission),Taissa, meshif,
100% this. I really want to do Donan next. His story is heartbreaking.
The art in this video is amazing. Where did the one @13:57 come from?
Thank you, it can be REALLY hard to find proper artwork. I'm sorry to say that I don't remember where that piece came from.
Keep up the good work sir. Do you think the Oracle will be one of the next classes? they fought alongside the valkyries pre diablo 2. We have never seen them in game that I know of
Thank you. It's a good question. As much as I want the Crusader to come back, a new class that we've never been able to play before would be fun.
@@NyxVellum they've stated that the nostalgia is here with the original 5 and they will be doing new classes
The mythology of diablo games is soo interesting.
Good job on this vid bro!
Glad you liked it, I put a lot of effort into this one.
Newly subbed. Really appreciate your style fam.
Thanks for the sub!
Great points here.
@@NyxVellum Awesome, thanks!! Watching now! :)
Interesting take!
You have got yourself a new Subscriber, nice work
Thank you so much. I won't let you down.
The Hasbulla cameo took me out 😂 great vid man
thats literally us (in 99%) watching a video :D , always eating and wathicng something on youtube
I'm happy it made someone laugh haha.
Great video! What is the song in the background called? ( 7:04 )
All the songs are from the original OST of Diablo 4
Lilith embracing the idea of the children are the future
Liked and subbed! Nice stuff!
Thank you!
Screw daddy inarius. He cared abt going back to heaven than saving us. This paternity court case should be in favour of mama lillith
Awesome video as always man! 😊
Much appreciated, thank you.
The auto-generated subtitles are hilarious ;-)
7:00 "The birth of their son, Rama, also known as the North Korean, ..."
Especially Inarius keeps getting creatively repurposed by the generator.
Honestly if anyone's going win in this game it's going to be the burning hells. The angels don't want to change anything.
6:05 with CC. Interesting piece of lore.
The subtitles broke for me and it said Rathma the North Korean. Hehehe
I’m on my mid 30’s and buy my first Diablo
Diablo 3 on Switch. Feel very good, like Champion: Return to Arms that I love a lot
It's ironic, the daughter of hatred can love.
Great video yet again, thanks!
