If you want to monitor remotely you need a hub. They do intergrate well with other systems though. Paul has his feeding through the Victron system on his boat.

The vacuum sealer brought back so many memories. As a birthday present in 1973, I was given a RonCo Seal-A-Meal, as a bit of a warning that I would be sailing with Dad from the San Francisco Bay Area down to Oceania and Indonesia. I did quite a bit of the galley work and prep, ending up making loads of individual portions to be sealed up and ready to pop into a pot of boiling water.

You are right about the small snorkeling tank. Looks like that size is useful but, the tiny ones are known as three breathe death. They are even cheeky/ negligent enough to have a hand pump that cannot fill the tank in the first place
Yes I think it’s just about possible to do the 1/2 Litre tanks with a hand pump, if you want a good workout! But everyone I know says they are far too small to be of any real use.

I can only recommend the Lotus. Have it for a few months now and really enjoying this amazing little grill. Very happy to learn, that ist can be used with "ordinary" coal and lighter. I have been buying the really expensive Lotus coal and paste 😔Thanks for sharing 😄
Coal is coal, no idea why you'd think Lotus coal is any different than the regular kind.

If you buy and use any scuba diving kit without attending a course which explains the dangers and how to avoid them, you can burst your lungs in only an ascent from a meter. Burst your ear drums and other dangers. There is no law/legislation saying you have to be qualified to scuba dive but you would be stupid to use scuba off the shelf.

Steve, the Ruuvi sensors are now integrated with the Victron Cerbo via Bluetooth. So we monitor our power systems via Victron’s VRM portal and can also monitor the Ruuvi sensor data the same way. Very useful when away from the boat. Rob.
Yes Paul uses his via the Victron system, Ruuvi have done a good job at allowing their products to integrate with other systems.

Hi, I was impressed with your Lotus Grille to the point where I have bought one, the middle size. It’s absolutely brilliant. My version has a usb socket and cable which does away with batteries at home. It’s so easy to use and uses very little charcoal. It’s ready to use in two minutes. A godsend.

Glad you like it. Beware if you’re using the crumbled up paraffin block fire starters like we do as last time we used ours the fan didn’t work & it was because a piece had fallen down there and jammed it! It worked again once cleared though
The Gateway for the Ruuvi sensors can feed a local server. Useful at my home. I've been planning to DIY something in this space, and this will meet my needs without the engineering effort.

Well that's pretty much what it was. We only show items we have tested that we really like though, some things on here are just tips of good products from other sailors, some like the VPN surfshark are sponsored but only after we had already used it for a year and found it to be much better than the others we've tried (it's the only one which always works with the BBC iplayer)
Hi iv got to comment this SCUBA kit is not safe please don’t promote it, you absolutely need 💯 training to dive with compressed gas (air) these kits are death traps with out training. I am sure you guys know about DCI’s and over expansion lung injury’s! Guys I’m a humble dive instructor and I love your Chanel but please don’t promote scuba without training. Thank you 🙏🏻
I certainly wouldn’t advise anyone to go diving with this as a primary kit, certified diver or otherwise. I’m sorry if that didn’t come across in the video. I’m using this kit just the same as snorkelling going down a few metres to do boat maintenance, change anodes, clear a prop that sort of thing. It just means I can go down and stat down for 5 mins to do the job which might be not be possible freediving. I might at a pinch go down less than 10 metres to clear an anchor but only if I were certain it was fully controllable. As I’ve said I’ve done several courses & understand the dangers. I agree that kit like this must never be seen as a toy to be played with by people that haven’t educated themselves to the dangers, but I’m very much against the idea of regulating everything in the world, people should be able to be responsible for their own safety.
@@svfairisle no free diving is a much safer option, with the greatest respect compressed gas ie Scuba you can not dive without understanding! training is crucial!
So for instance the atmosphere weighs 1bar at sea level as you know as sailers! Ok every 10mtrs of water weighs the same! So at 10mtrs the water pressure is 2 atmospheres
If you breath from a compressed air supply and fill your lungs and hold your breath for whatever reason and surface to atmospheric pressure 2 bar your lungs will try to expand to 2x there capacity. Scuba trading is essential!

Yes I fully agree, if you think you can hold your breath coming up from 10 metres you shouldn’t go anywhere near a dive tank! I wasn’t saying free diving is more risky, what I said was some things that may be impossible to do freediving will be made possible with this tank. For instance we got a rope around our prop in Spain 2 years ago, I managed to clear in free diving but it took me about an hour to do. That was okay as we were safely docked at the time, but if we were at sea I might not have the luxury of spending an hour doing it and I reckon with the bottle I’d do it in 5 mins. So I’m happy to have equipment like this and use it for the right things in the right way and I would be very annoyed by legislation that says I have to be a dive master to do it! I don’t want to go diving and I certainly don’t want to have a piece of paper that tells me I can when all I want to do are the thing’s described. The two day long courses that I’ve done have been excellent and told me all I need to know and more for what I intend to do. It is possible for people to educate themselves without insisting on certification.
@@svfairisle ignorance is bliss we only mention the 10mtr mark as it’s double atmospheric pressure so from the top of the atmosphere to sea level is 1bar 1000 millibars Down to 10mtrs is an extra bar so 2 bar, 5mtrs is 500 millibars, I’m not a dive master ‘put another dollar in’I am a dive instructor who dives with an agency who do not charge just pass on the knowledge and experience for free! I’m sure you guys are safe but others who don’t understand the physics may not fair so well 🤔
Steve and Judy another great video. I wondered whether the Aftershokz headphones would be good for communication (marriage savers) or do you think that the over the ear headphones are a superior design? (I noted that Judy was wearing a headset in a previous video.) I'm interested in your thoughts.
We use the Aftershokz all the time. Not sure about marriage savers! Certainly saved our videos (one person can film and the other can still listen to the radio).
We’ve never used them for communication as we do everything with hand signals when I’m on the bow. It’s not a bad idea though & I think the aftershokz would be good for it as they stay firmly in place. There have been occasions while stern tying when it would have been useful. We don’t have a hand signal for ‘there’s a knot in the line’ when I’m 50 meters away in the dinghy trying to pull the line out!
As a certified professional diving instructor, i URGE YOU TO NOT USE THIS SCUBA EQUIPMENT. It's dangerously small and lacks safety features needed for safe diving.
Secondly, PLEASE attend a scuba diving course and get a certificate. Scuba diving is an inherently risky activity, even at shallow depths, and the dangers are not obvious if you're not properly trained. You'll learn all about this and how to dive safely if you attend a diving course. It takes about five days including theory and practice, and is great fun!
Yes I know, I’ve been on several short diving courses. I have no intention of using this equipment for diving however, if I wanted to go free diving I would invest in a full kit and do a full training course. At he moment I don’t. This equipment is for surface work only, boat maintenance basically and at the absolute maximum freeing a stuck anchor in under 10 metres where I can use the chain to ascend safely. I’ve already had this conversation about certification, it’s not something I subscribe to. People should be able to be responsible for their own safety without a nanny state dictating terms. There are many ways to educate yourself.

Judy, can the vacuum sealed bags be reused once you have broken the seal, otherwise more plastic waste.
yes they can be resealed and re vacuumed
Don't really see the point of the SMACO - Why not just get normal dive kit (and qualification) then you can go diving too properly :-)? The Charcoal reminded me of a story Tom Cunliffe told of his boat being boarded and searched by Customs - with a search dog that bounded off through their coal store and then came back (having found nothing) and jumped all over the customs officers white shirts :-)! Can the vaccum bags be used? Like the frozen G&T lemons!
I’ve never really wanted to take up diving. I quite enjoyed going out for the odd day which I’ve done in New Zealand and the Caribbean but it’s a bit like parachuting & parasailing, both of which I’ve done a few times and enjoyed but have never really wanted to take up as a hobby.

I suppose at a push the vacuum sealer could be used for clothes that you are not going to use for a while, especially with regards to space being at a premium on a boat.

I’m sure there are some places in the world that you would need to be ( it is the rule as far as I’m aware ) but I wasn’t asked and talking to a couple of cruisers out here they say they’ve never been asked.
This is all good, all of this gadgets are helpful for a sailor. For me is the problem that u have to have an app for each of them, nothing to display on a pad for them together
I use the Ruuvi app on my iPad but I believe the sensors can be hooked up to systems like Victron to be seamlessly incorporated

Depends on the country you’re in. If Amazon is available in that country then marina offices will take packages for you. And if they have Amazon lockers then even better, you don’t need to be in a marina. Don’t see many Amazon lockers though at the moment

The adapter for normal DIN fitting to fill from tank to tank would be worth getting. If you had that I could have filled it for you in minutes.

@@svfairisle 420J2 has an alright corrosion resistance so they should hold up fine even in the marine environment, the problem is mainly edge retention, you'll probably have to sharpen them often to keep them from dulling...

If the bottle fits diagonally get the big knife and the glue gun out, just thought. I don't get the fascination for Japanese knives, you said they are carbon steel, well that's equivalent to case hardened chocolate, high speed steel is what you want, I can cut an onion finer and quicker with my Victorinox, and it's the right shape. I do like the look of that barbecue though.
That’s a good idea I may be able to cut the foam & have the bottle diagonally. Maybe I should use the knives, test out the steel!

Steve… there are small SCUBA sets that may be refilled with a standard bicycle tire pumps. Did you consider those?
It sounds like a great idea, but only really possible for the 1/2 litre bottles, even then it’s a real work out apparently. People with 1 litre tanks say is not worth considering so definitely not for a 2 litre bottle. Shame I know but that’s the way it is.
Great videos, we genuinely learn a lot, with our trip looming it helps us gain insight to boat life.
One observation on the food storage solution is the amount of plastic waste this will be creating! Is the plastic recyclable? The benefit of containers is they can be used over and over again?

I've been looking for a similar solution for short shallow "boat job" dives. I have full dive kit but keeping a tank full at sea isn't easy - good compressors are bulky and expensive.
I think this is probably the best option - a 12v chargeable floating "hookah" kit.
- The Nomad. Not cheap but much less expensive and easier to use/store/maintain than a compressor and dive kit.

Good hardware shops sell small portable battery powered compressors with tank ideal for making a maintaince dive hookah just add a filter into the dive hose and your good to go
