  • This week Plant Lovers let's take a look at two nobile type orchids doing their thing! First is the species Dendrobium nobile which I bought this winter and which decided to bloom! I was quite surprised as I'd re-potted it just at the point when it would be thinking about producing buds and had assumed it would take a year to settle in! But no! Here it is, two buds four flowers and the most glorious colours! And second, my Dendrobium Euryalus, which is a nobile type, has decided to give me two distinct flushes of blooms; one in Sept and one in Nov - very early and then very late spring in Australia. It usually is in full bloom for me in November so I was curious about that! Tell me if you've have a similar nobile type double flushes - I didn't realise they could!
    The online nursery I bought the Dendrobium nobile from is: capeoasis.net/ they don't have a huge selection but always a few interesting things.

    Hi mathew, i wish i had watched your video a few months ago. I had a dendrobium that was given to me, first year it bloomed. But then it lost it leaves, and i thought it was dead. So in the bin it went. I would of never guessed a orchid could be deciduous. Lesson learned. Thanks for your videos..

    Thanks Matthew, another very helpful video! I would certainly recommend Cape Oasis Nursery too as I have received excellent Vanda and Cattlyea seedlings from them that were healthy and are now flourishing in Brisbane climate.

    Hi,Mathew 👋
    Thank you for sharing your nobile type Dendrobium. Flowers on your
    🌱's are beautiful ,well done👍💚.
    My Dendrobium Hamana Lake ' Dream' is a easy to grow ( for me 😉) , hybrid. Reliable bloomer, big 🌸 flush around February-March in my part of the world. It did bloom again in late July - August ( very warm,unusually high temp.) this past summer but only few blooms at the top of the older canes. Right now is in winter rest. Some canes started showing signs of buds forming and at the same time pushing new growth 🤦‍♀️😀. Take care and have a great weekend 🤗🎄☃️🎅

      @@helloplantlovers Thanks, Matthew 😊. Yes,I am really happy and fortunate to be able successfully grow / bloom this orchid. Brings me such a joy in early spring when outside in most cases we have snow on the ground. 😄😉This 🌱 is also nicely fragrant . It's a keeper. Hope you can find the way to add this 🌱to your collection.

    Interesting. I'm located in the Southern Hemisphere. I took canes off of a huge Nobile last month. They were practically 6-9" high. So yesterday I noticed nubs on the newly potted orchids!! I am so happy, as I thought they were spikes...

    Thanks for sharing. I’ve transitioned mine into winter resting and it is so loaded with leaves still. I imagine she may skip a year in blooming, unless those leaves fall off in January-February.

    I have a friend who I recently found out is growing a Den. nobile in just a water vase culture on a kitchen windowsill. It's even flowering! Never thought id hear of that.

      Wowser!!! Nor me! How does it not rot????

    • @bbost3
      @bbost3 Рік тому

      Apparently his grandfather did it that way. I am not convinced, but he did say something about root rot won't occur without the breakdown of organic material, to which there is no material to break down since it's just water.

    Your species nobile looks so so different from mine and now I am wondering if I have the right plant (without blooms who knows). The canes on mine are half as narrow and the largest ones are in the range of 75 cm long (the leaves are slightly narrower and darker green as well). This species has a wide distribution so it may be due to collection location, I suppose time will tell if it ever blooms.
    That Den Euryalus is absolutely gorgeous.

      Interesting! As you say, a huge range for this and a lot of hybrids some of which are very close to the species form. Hopefully yours will burst forth soon and show you it's true colours!

    What is the preferred potting medium that you use? I just bought one and I am wondering if I should re-pot using orchid bark/ phangum moss combo or if there is something else better.

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  6 місяців тому

      Really depends where you are and how you grow - there isn't one particular way to pot them. The nobile is in medium bark and I think the euryalus might even be in out of the bag orchid mix from a hardware store! Whatever works for you in your climate that is free draining. Good luck!

    Just bought my first dendrobium nobile type and im kinda nervous bout the different winter/summer care.. its winter currently in Norway and ofc i keep it inside, and it is currently in bloom, so i suppose in summer time it will start new growth? But do i then not water it?😵 Love your videos they’ve been really helpful💕

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for watching! Firstly, I don't grow mine indoors so our growing conditions are very different. But a good rule of thumb is: water them when they're' doing something, stop when they're not! Generally nothing is happening in winter so you would water minimally keeping the plant on the dry side but in good light. In spring you should start see see new growths and in spring you'd start to begin to increase the watering and then start feeding. Good luck!

    Hi Matthew have you ever come across dendrobium star fancy. I have a seedling struggling to get roots on it. Any suggestion on care or how to root it I have it in damp moss. Thinking of trying water culture. In in London UK.

      Hi there - just noticed your question and the orchid is either dead or alive by now I'm sure!! Not heard of that variety I'm afraid, but I would caution against keeping it damp for a prolonged period - perhaps allow it dry a little between waterings. If it has poor or no roots it could easily rot. Good luck!
