The neat thing about this group is that they were comprised of "novice" singers. Before Jokers none of the four were in a quartet of any renown. They sang for the first time at a Buckeye Invitational informal happening. This was in late August of 1989. They entered the JAD contest in Oct. and won the Championship in a tough district. They entered the prelims in the spring and were selected for Louisville Int'l and finished 10th. Then on to 5th and 2nd places before winning in Pitt in 1994.

That is not true. They all ran the race so many times they thought they were the bunny, not the dog.
If God wanted BBS to be easy, he would have made it trios. It's always number four who is the demonic spawn of the devil's own bunghole.
Can I have an "Amen" to that, all you real Barbershoppers out there?

They killed it, and they KNEW they killed it. Phenomenal. Probably my all-time favorite performance from any quartet ever.

The lead and Bari both self-clapping at the same exact moment after Dixieland 1step.

I first saw this on VHS TAPE IN 1995 when I started barbershop. Loved it then. Saw them sing it in SLC for their 25TH anniverary and they crushed it even more so. I love it even more now. Mark Green is awesome.

That swipe at 2:15 on "hand" is one of the greatest things I've ever heard come out of a quartet. Dat Steve Legters on baritone going from Eb --> G; so ninja, so clean.

I was hoping to see this mentioned in the comments; good catch. Made me cream my pants and then I had post-masturbatory guilt for some reason

I have been listening to this magnificent piece of barbershop for weeks. I have three of their CDs, and I don't think they're out of print. I never drive anywhere without the Sidewinders, the Oriole Four, and the Jokers Wild.
They were the last vindication of old fashioned Buffalo Bills, Confederates, Sidewinders, et al, with the powerful, crisp lead, the smooth, resonant bass, and the (shall I say) insistent Tenor (no shrinking violet here. He is a madman) and the baritone who is always there, yet never TOO loud...you know....barbershop! We had them on a crappy show but they were more fun than a barrel of monkeys, which the tenor greatly resembles. Thank the Dear wee had them, because half the show never even got there!
But they were amazing. And fun.
      And truly excellent. Beyond description.
      God bless them, every one.

One of the all-time underrated quartets. Their CD with Rhythm of Life and Holly on it is right up there with the acknowledged classics in my book.

Not every champ sings real barbershop.
These guys might have been the last real barbershop quartet. Individually, they were geniuses. Collectively, they knew their first job was to ring every chord that could be made to ring, not just the easy ones.
Plus, they were great fun to be around. I'm glad I got to do some of that.

Comparisons are odious but I really feel like they performed Love me and the World is Mine better than (the still very great) Ringmasters

I agree. Not to mention JW sings it in the original key. Ringmasters pitches it down.

Is there a remastered version of this anywhere? My dad coached these guys, so I would like to hear it in its full, non-90's-audio-static glory.

Best I know of is the official microphone recording of the performance. For the 75th anniversary, the BHS produced a cd set of the "best" song of each winner since the beginning of the society. This piece was the one selected for Joker's Wild. It's not studio quality, but it does remove the video static and overtone microphone overload. Joker's Wild produced a studio version of "Love Me, and the World Is Mine" on their first album, Joker's Wild. The only place I've been able to listen to them is on Spotify. Hope this helps.

@warthogfixr I don't see you up there! I wanna see you do better
then be the self appointed judge. Jokers were the judges choice
and you aint the judge! Oh bytheway, I was there in 94 and at every
international except for two between 1968 through 1988. Seen it,
done it, and been around it since birth. Get up there!!!!

These guys could sing the balls off anything. Too bad noone liked the lead.
If quartets only had three guys, there'd be a million Champions, so that just sucks.
The other lead ain't bad, but this is the sound of an International Champ. Listen to it on a CD and this rings from end to end.
Don't even talk to me about the tag et al.
The judges must have been shitting themselvess....
