This performance was the springboard to thousands of quartets singing "Bill Bailey" at contests for the next 10 years. Of course no one came close to singing it like these guys!

These guys are masters of vowels. Pure ring with edge.

    My favorite quartet

Wow, I'm only just now realizing how much the vowel is being modified by the bass on the final chord of the ballad. That's really insane--doesn't really seem necessary considering how the quartet is singing, but it still rings like crazy.

Never heard a barbershop seventh chord being sung so low. It sounds, like you said, "crushing".

You could try my approach: I looked online for a cd to purchase and came up short. So I emailed Doug Harrington, and asked if he knew where I could buy one. About a week later I got a package from Sweden with a cd of theirs. My point is he's a really cool guy.

That chord at 1:07 is nasty (in the best possible way)

@Emergency051 That's Mike Scott's bro there. A great baritone himself (which every one is) who was a great chapter president for quite a time here in Algona, IA!

1:03 is an amazing example of how to crush a chord.

Mistakes is pretty solid but I’m sorry. The bass on the final goodbye, the way he sings bye sounds really funny to me 😂
Still an amazing group to win the crown :)

If you enjoy torturing yourself - actually pick your favorite top 10 qtet champs since 1973, then attempt ranking them if they all competed on equal ground. Try really hard to leave biases out...be a neutral judge of your own top 10 and have a ball ranking them! Ha!
Why '73? Because Dealer's Choice, but we all know that. They were the culmination of all previous years, and THE BAR for all things to come.
Anyway, Second Edition is way way up on the list, but the higher in the list we go, the torture compounds lolol.
I think SE's arrangements and song choices are among the best of all. Just excellent arranging and delivery. "Mistakes" and "Jeanie" and some other ballads of theirs are just timeless.
Oh, then when you resolve this, then you have to do the same from circa 1940's up to 1972. Some of them are super sharp, working within their own era say from late 50s to mid 60s or so. Amazing in fact...but the vision of the DC arrival just hadn't been quite figured out yet...thus the 72/73 Great Divide. Nevertheless, enjoy it all!

Am I hearing the chord at 1:03 correctly?, B-D-G#-E from bottom to top? Hard to tell because there's so much ring

    • @yaybrianna
      @yaybrianna 6 років тому +5

It's a D7 in second inversion. A-F#-C-D from the bottom.

The ring is even better on their album version of this song. It’s literal perfection. It’s like you just pressed the keys down on a freakin’ organ. They’re so locked 100% of the time.
