Welcome back to our channel, DIYers! In today's video, we have an exciting tutorial for all the custom painters out there. We'll be showing you two different methods to remove orange peel from clearcoat once it's dry using sanding techniques. So grab your tools and let's dive in!
For Method 1, we'll be using a powerful tool called a Dual Action Sander, also known as a DA sander. This method requires a 600 grit sandpaper attached to the sander with a Velcro backing. This ensures a secure hold, even if the sandpaper gets wet during the process.
Using smooth motions, you'll be able to sand the clearcoat surface effortlessly with the DA sander, effectively eliminating any orange peel. This is crucial for achieving a smooth and even base for the next layers of paint. In this tutorial, we'll be adding some bronze and silver leaf graphics before reapplying the clearcoat, but remember to follow the instructions specific to the coatings you're using.
Now, on to Method 2! In this method, we'll be using a Velcro hand sander with the same 6-inch 600 grit sandpaper. This time, we'll be sanding in an X pattern, ensuring that no area is left untouched. Wet sanding is the way to go here, as it allows for a more even and controlled sanding process.
After the sanding is complete and the surface is dry, it's time to assess the results. You may notice some imperfections that need further attention. To address this, I always recommend sanding the edges using a 600 grit sanding sponge. This helps blend different layers seamlessly and prevents any burning through the paint.

I mean this respectfully but it is reassuring to see even the professionals get orange peel and various blemishes when they've applied clear coat. It always looks like your clear coat goes on like glass. I have painted my motorbike tank and panels and it is far harder to do than you make it look.
